"Drag is so much more than gay men dressing up as women. It's about creating space and creating validity for people who want to express gender differently and by their own rules. And drag queens, drag kings, need to be at the forefront of pushing for rights and protections and safe spaces for the entire spectrum of gender non-conforming and trans people."
It was an honor to speak with Jeremy Hobson from NPR's Here & Now a few weeks after the crowning. Click the photo below to listen to the segment.
"The fact that they placed so much appreciation on my drag has completely changed my life, and the way that I think about myself, and the way that I think about what I’m capable of . . . it’s pretty magical. I’m excited to share the spotlight that I’m getting with the people in my community who have inspired and changed my drag. A superstar doesn’t just use the spotlight for themselves."
"What we do in Brooklyn doesn’t completely follow the trends of drag. It pushes up against the rules of who’s allowed to do drag and what drag is allowed to look like. Going into the finale — really, the entire show — I wanted to honor and represent that community of drag that I’m a part of and show that with a fighting spirit and a determination to put on great shows, you can succeed. That’s what drag is all about. That’s what Brooklyn drag is all about, for sure. I went into the finale with that intention, so I was very happy it led me to the win"

"Staying true to the traditions of drag should be about protecting and uplifting other drag queens, even as you uplift yourself. The top four this year are people who value community and honesty and supporting other queens very, very highly."

"...My favorite thing about this season is this final insistence on live performance and the importance of being able to captivate an audience. That really cuts to the heart of what drag has always been about and I’m really excited that there’s kind of a renaissance of lip-syncing thanks to this finale."
