It's finally happened, after painting miniatures "professionally" for 10 years, I'll be teaching a class in my home state of Wisconsin. October 19th at Gathering Games in New Richmond I'll be running a one day beginners class. I'm excited, I'm always excited to teach but this is special for the reasons mentioned :) Calling all northern troops, let's jam!
I've decided not to take on any more commissions for a while. The decision was made in order to free up time for other pursuits such as teaching and recording more videos. I'm sure I'll come back to commissions at some point but it's also important not to live your life the same way day in and day out. That aside, I have a very special project as my send-off :)
I've titled it Lord Maggot, which seems fitting. I've been working on it a bit more slowly than other projects because I want it to be perfect. During the building process I kept getting new ideas and consequently having to order the right parts. What follows are some work in progress pictures of the process. Enjoy!
This piece takes a lot of inspiration from the Heavy Metal band Manilla Road. The specific song, Lost in Necropolis being the main thematic drive. The song didn't tell tales of UFO's or water filled with the spirits of the fallen, but in my mind it's implied.
When I began working on this piece, Mark Shelton, the nucleus of the band was still among the living. I wasn't sure if I was going to give this piece or simply present it to him and make that decision based on his reaction. Sadly he passed away before this piece was completed so I will have to discuss it with him on the ethereal plane when I too join the legions of dead.
The lyrics are as follows:
Through the jungle by the river Styx I've journed long and far this day Lurking shadows in the parapets Will never make me turn away Darkened city veiled in crimson mist Entombed in time without decay Never thought it would be like this It feels like I'm living inside a dream But my mind tells me I'm
Lost in Necropolis
Now I know what it's like to be Inside the city of the dead All I think of is breaking free >From all the spells chained to my head Sword and axe are my destiny I watch the stars turning blood red There is light yes I've got to believe For this feels like living inside a dream I know now that I am
Lost in Necropolis
I have seen your cities burning I have felt your daughters yearning For the peace before the tides of war I have witnessed funeral pyres Burning bright with man's desire I will fight the demon horde forever more
The world is full of mysteries That men have never seen before Magik lives in all dynasties The light of love shines ever more In the crypt of Atlantean Kings I found what I was looking for Magik Trident of Volusia's Sea I know it's like living inside a dream
First off, I'd like to apologize for that pun. I can resist everything but temptation. Puns are the big red button that I cantc not push.
It's been a while since I've painted an army for myself. It can be very fun coming up with a narrative and variations on a theme. With an escalation league happening at my local store I was inspired to gibe Age of Sigmar a try.
Originally I wanted to play Kharadron Overlords but after delving into the rules, they didn't play how I wanted them to. I wanted to be lord of the skies, shooting off the deck of my airships with mass firepower, but you can't. So it was back to the drawing broad, I chose the stormcast because it would give me some variety to work with. This way I could field an army that contained cavalry, wizards, and a dragon. Count me in!
I chose to create my own theme based on my Celtic lineage and the Blackhall Chamber was born. The first step was to get a 500 point list together, mainly some battle line troops. So I put together 10 sequitors, 3 castigators, and and evocator prime to play the part of my lord arcanum. I want to customise my models but don't have a lot of leftover bits yet, I also plan on fielding a mounted general as time goes on and the points value increases.
After assembly, I split them into smaller groups for painting.
At this point the sequitors are finished, just have to squeeze out the castigators and my wizard. Also, make some scenery to match my snow bases so I can better dominate the tabletop wan stay en vogue.
The demon that is feeding off this planet, the plague angel. This is also the roadmap I've been using to create my Monstrous Creature class. To check the locations I'll be teaching at, as well the locations of the other mighty instructors on CK's roster check out ckstudios.bigcartel.com Grab a t-shirt while you're there ;)
The iconic anti-hero himself, new and improved. This kit was a blast to assemble and had some hidden easter eggs that provided a unique look at the tactical dreadnought armor. Back in black and lets see if he can put a new spin on that old Vigilus invasion.
I'm very happy to have made a connection recently with CK studios, with whom I'll be teaching classes on the road. Just a couple dates to begin with but there's no time like the present to spread good info. I hope you can make it to these classes but if not, we are already working on more venues and I will be sure to post the information as it comes. Cheers!
