Welcome to Royal Road Legends, the home of web novels and fan fictions! In our amazing community, you can find various talented individuals who write as a hobby or even professionally, artists who create art for them, and many, many readers who provide valuable feedback and encouragement.
In today’s blog post we’d like to introduce a couple of fresh features we’ve been working on for a while and believe are a step in a right direction towards improving the community of Royal Road.
We’ve received plenty of feedback from you, our dedicated user base, on improving user communication, and especially on fictions and the forums — something we think has not been given a proper priority until now. That is about to change.
Reputation of a Royal
To start off, we’re reintroducing and repurposing the old Reputation feature. Once present on the old Royal Road Forums, the feature has been reintroduced a few months ago, left to gather up some strength and dust, and now has been improved with, you guessed it, levels.
But, let’s start from the basics.
How to get Reputable
Users can give each other reputation on comments and forum posts (look for the small +Rep button in the corners).
Now, where have I dug these up from?
The amount a user can give to another will vary but will depend on their reputation level, which they increase by getting reputation. So, get more reputation to give more (...)
We’ve received frequent complaints that our name has been hard to type into the browser for a long time. “Royal Road” is just not intuitive enough, and it’s particularly common to mistype one of the Rs as a T.
Therefore, we are proud to announce that we have partnered up with the SAVE THE FROGS! foundation, in order to preserve the majestic, delicate creatures that are so vital to so many ecosystems.
Sadly, that means our support for the penguins and continued loyalty to the Penguin Empire must end far too soon.
We have changed our name to Royal Toad to commemorate this great change and jump towards a new era.
We are also changing our trusty mascot to be 401% more royal and 500% more froggy — Introducing Tadpoleon:
Please help us make sure that this transition goes as smoothly as possible, and we thank you for your everlasting support and cooperation.
Hi, in today’s update we will be adding a feature some of you have asked us to implement for a long while.
We allow authors to do many things here. They are free to post on their schedule, write about the topics they like, and communicate with the readers on their own accord.
To realise more freedom for our authors we allow them to moderate their own fiction comments, for example deleting them when appropriate or if they contain spoilers.
While this works, it’s not a sufficient measure for a different kind of spam authors (and readers!) receive.
To remedy some of the remaining issues, we are introducing a feature to block users from contacting you. This should help with the unwanted spam some authors are receiving in both PMs and on their fiction comments.
In order to access the feature, go to the user’s account information page and click the Block button in the top left.
Please don’t block Wing. She’s lovely
There are 3 options that you can choose from when blocking a person, as shown in the confirmation screen below.
The options are fairly straightforward:
Blocking Private Messages prevents the user from sending you any messages
We’ve reworked our Advanced Search to no longer use buttons for tags. Tags will now appear in a dropdown list instead.
Each tag will have a brief description listed so you can easily find exactly what you’re searching for at any time.
Additionally, the list can be filtered by putting text in:
There are now two separate lists for including and excluding tags, which will make searching for your favourite fictions a breeze.
Now that we can easily add more tags since they don’t use up browser real estate, we’ve decided to change and expand our genre and tag list so we can better reflect the available fictions and align with current trends.
We’ve decided to remove the Non-fiction genre. Considering we’re a website that revolves around fiction, this one was an unintuitive option to begin with and most of the submissions we received were more akin to blog posts than stories. Thus, we’re ending the support for Non-fiction. Current fictions with the tag will receive the Contemporary genre instead.
Xianxia added alongside Wuxia. Wuxia fictions without Martial Arts tag will receive the Xianxia tag.
Ever since we have implemented our rating system, we have noticed a tendency for the users to mark fictions they don’t want to read with a 0.5 rating.
While this is technically what a rating is, we’ve found that it negatively impacts the authors. To remedy that, we’re adding a new Not Interested feature, as well as changing how ratings can be made.
As you can see, the new “Not Interested” button can be easily accessed from the fiction page.
Furthermore, fictions can no longer be rated if no chapters of it were opened (but they can be marked as Not Interested). This should remedy some of the problems we’ve seen with ratings so far.
Additionally, fictions you’ve marked as Favorite, Following, or Not Interested, will be marked as such on your main page. We will consider expanding the functionality of this to more elements and features in the future. For now, let us know what you think.
The end of endless lines
Additionally, some of you may have noticed a change in reader width. We’ve changed the default reader width for larger devices (monitors and wide screens), in order to preserve a smaller character-to-line ratio consistent with printed books and ebook readers.
hank you for joining our meeting in preparation for our 5th anniversary. Many things are happening, and we need your help to make sure it all runs smoothly.

Initial setup for automatic sexual content flagging > We have bought some trained monkeys and hired a data scientist to feed them bananas. In return, they are making a system that automatically flags certain content as “sexual.” We feel this can be improved by using a neural network.
Revamped forum permission system - group owned public forums! > Forum permissions have been tweaked. Users will no longer be able to post threads where they shouldn’t be able to.
On-site forum notifications > Replies to threads can now provide on-site notifications. Please use the ‘Subscribe’ options on top of the thread to enable these. This option is now available without needing to reply to the thread.
After years of deliberation, we have finally acquired www.royalroad.com and changed our official domain name. If you promote your fiction with or shared our previous domain link, don’t worry - all old links will redirect to our new domain. However, we would prefer if you used royalroad.com for all future linking and refer to the website as such.
We are very excited for this change, and accordingly for this day, we have decided to release many things that have been in the works for quite some time.
Due to how the web works, this change also means that all users have been logged out - credentials and cookies are domain bound, and we apologise for this inconvenience.
As promised, the author premium is now ready to roll with many features.
The Author Premium will have the following features:
Additional analytics, including daily pageviews, reader retention rate, referrers, analytics for individual chapters and daily/weekly rating breakdown
Push notifications for new reviews - you can disable these for individual fictions if you don’t want them in a new pane on the settings page
Chapter page customizations, including pretty ornaments to replace (...)
Since day one, we, at RoyalRoad™, have expressed how much we take plagiarism seriously. While we cannot combat copyright infringement and plagiarism all over the internet, we can do so on our platform.
Accordingly, all fictions that get submitted to our platform are required to go through a verification process in order to make sure that the authors or the copyright holders are the ones who are publishing their works.
However, if for some reason something bypassed our verification process and you’ve noticed it, please either report it by opening a support ticket or contacting us directly via e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We have a second layer of copyright protection in which if we are notified about a RoyalRoad™ author's content being available elsewhere, with a reasonable suspicion that said content is being plagiarized, we will then contact the author ourselves and inform them. This will be done on the assumption that no one else has done so already.
It is said that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery." As such, so many readers and authors have become indifferent to plagiarism. Even if you truly don’t mind it, you should still take a stand to protect your work, if only to tell the industry that plagiarism is not acceptable. In fact, we reject 10% of submitted content, with the main cause being plagiarism. Plagiarized content is content that is found to be mainly written by someone else who is falsely claiming to be the sole and original author or a work that is published without the permission of the original author.
