Rose City Style Guide | Canadian Fashion & Lifestyle Blog
My name is Amanda and I live in Windsor, Ontario. I work in advertising but I’ve always been inspired by fashion, home decor and shopping for a steal. Rose City Style Guide is a space to share and chat about things that inspire me on the daily.
This past month, I teamed up with Amazon.ca to test out one of their latest launch, The Echo Spot. So, for the last few weeks, my husband Finn and I have been slowly getting to know what our new family member Alexa, and what she has to offer. As many may already know, raising a toddler is a balancing act which leaves you with no free hands. So our Echo Spot has been coming in handy on a daily basis for a variety of reasons. So, I thought I would share with you the Top 5 Reasons why we love our new BFF, Alexa.
Drop-In Video Calling
Finn is the first grandchild on both sides, so it is safe to say this kid is a hot commodity. We love how we can video chat in an instant, hands-free to my mom while I am wrangling Finn and trying to get dinner ready at the same time. We used to only Facetime, but now that my mom also has an Echo Spot, we can “Drop In” to hers in her living room and say hi! We currently have Alexa on our kitchen counter, so Finn can interact with my mom in his highchair while I am running around the kitchen getting things done.
New Playlists on the Fly
I literally cannot clean without music. But more specifically, upbeat and loud music. So, before or even after I can my hands dirty, I can ask Alexa to play me some upbeat music and she hooks me up with something new! It’s awesome to not have to worry about creating my own playlist and have her surprise me with something she knows I will like.
Coat or no coat? Pants or Shorts? With the weather transitioning, I never know how to dress Finn during our hectic mornings before work and daycare. So, Alexa saves the day by giving us the 411 of what to expect in terms of weather while we are getting ready in the morning or eating breakfast.
Instant Access to the “Wheels on the Bus” Song for those moments in need
Finn sometimes can be a handful. But, there is one thing that always helps, singing the “Wheels on the Bus”. So, whenever there is a meltdown going on, I ask our buddy Alexa to help us out and play the song and man, am I always grateful!
Google Calendar Integration
I probably would lose my head if it wasn’t attached, and knowing where we I need to be next is also an issue. So quick and easy access to what’s next in our calendar is amazing.

Even though that last statement might not be true, it sure does feel like it some days. So, having a coffee maker at home is no surprise. Previously, we only had a single serve and with the new job with longer hours and our little munchkin keeping us on our toes, a coffee maker that can brew more than one cup a time wasn’t a bad idea. So, when our family had the chance to try out the new BraunBrewSense Coffee Maker available at Bed Bath & Beyond we jumped at the chance.
First off, a maybe most importantly, it goes so well in our white kitchen. It’s glossy white and stainless design, simply blends seamlessly into our home and lifestyle. Plus, it doesn’t just look good, it gets the job done. With its 12-cup glass Flavor Carafe, and its PureFlavor Technology, the Brewsense Coffee Maker gives us that consistent great flavor from the first to last drop. What’s PureFlavour Technology you ask? It lets the coffee maker brew the coffee at the optimal temperature and time to extract the best flavor and aroma. I bet your single serve coffee machine can’t do that?
So, even though this option wasn’t available when we were registering for our wedding shower if you have a crisp white kitchen like ours it’s the perfect addition to your home. We love ours so much, I am giving one away on my Instagram so you can try it out for yourself!
Plus, there is a deal going on of 15% off Braun products on the Braun website running from now until May 12th! Be sure to snag your’s while the offer is hot!

Besides me wondering where the real spring weather is, I am also losing sight of what to wear to the office. As things tend to be more casual nowadays, I can’t help but still want to feel polished at work. That’s why I have teamed up with Reitmans to showcase some of my favourite classic pieces to add to your workday wardrobe this spring.
Nothing beats a good coat and investing in one that will take you through season after season is a good place to start. So, it’s no surprise this classic olive trench from Reitmans fits the bill. You may have caught me in a similar style before on the blog, but I literally loved the waterproof material and structure so much, I bought another one. You can’t say I didn’t warn ya! Plus, its clean lines and time-honoured silhouette is the perfect topper for a polished office look.
Next up, there isn’t anything more versatile than a pair of black dress pants. But when it comes to spring I am all about showing off those heels or loafers I have had stashed away all winter and these paper bag waist ankle pants from Reitmans do the trick. Plus, with my current long workdays the front pockets, matching belt and an elastic at the back keep me comfortable and productive all day long.
Lastly, a light neutral sweater you’ll wear with almost everything is the last piece of the polished workday outfit puzzle. When its soft, flattering and layers with ease, you will end up buying it in more than one hue. This grey option from Reitmans features an elegant twist at the sleeve’s hem elevating this classic with a little femininity. Plus, its super affordable and comes in another colour!
What are your spring office staples? Let me know yours in the comments below!
Well, you may have caught the news over on my Instagram, but if not, I am having a serious pinch me moment this month because I am hosting an amazing styling event at the J.Crew Women’s Only Shop in Yorkdale Shopping Centre. A huge fan of J.Crew for so long I can’t even remember, I am beyond obsessed with their new spring essentials and can’t wait to style, shop and sip Saturday, April 28th from noon to 4 pm.
But besides hanging out with me and snagging some serious spring essentials at J.crew, my girl Cabello by Carolina will be hosting a complimentary braid bar, because what goes better with statement spring pieces other than braids of course!
To top it all off, the first 20 to RSVP to email@example.com for the event will receive a free gift with purchase! And with the RSVPs already coming in, I recommend getting your name on the list STAT!
So, because I have ants in my pants to get shopping some of the latest J.Crew styles. I have rounded up some of my personal faves available in stores now!
Keeping up with Rose City Style Guide with both a career I love and a baby at home is challenging at best. It is a constant balancing act and you can only imagine that the blog unfortunately always ends up in last place. So, the only way I knew how to combat it? I had to make a plan and set up some office hours.
While most of the time my office is after Finn is in bed on the couch while watching some random episode of The Office, I knew that setting up shop in space that was both convenient and functional was a better idea. That’s where the University of Windsor’s EPICentre comes in.
EPICentre is literally everything you would need in a collaborative workspace but with some serious perks with programs for every kind of entrepreneur. The facility is equipped with modern workstations, high-speed wireless internet, private meeting rooms with video conferencing equipment, a large workshop, kitchenette, and ample collaborative and comfortable spaces. It is literally a beehive of entrepreneurial activities and I love the buzz!
I have only had a chance to work from EPICentre a handful of times so far, but I am most impressed with the amount of work I can accomplish while I am there. Stepping into the space really sets the tone for a successful afternoon of getting stuff done with no interruptions, and I can wait to set aside more time for my little corner of the internet.
But besides, dedicating time to my ongoing workload I have also been utilizing the space for both hosting workshops, attending events and consulting Tech Startups for WETech Alliance. If you can’t tell already, EPICentre has something for everyone. Programs, resources, competitions and courses, it is a candy store for the rookie or even veteran entrepreneur and should not be missed if you are in Windsor-Essex.

What do you get when you combine a babe’s complete obsession with Mickey Mouse Club House and mama’s love of neutrals? A fun-filled monochromatic first birthday party!
It was such an amazing day celebrating Finn’s first birthday last month I am so excited to share with you some snaps! There were a bunch of sweet treats from Shelby’s Sweet Shoppe, a quick Mickey Mouse wall decal DIY and enough Mickey and Minnie Mouse ears to go around! The day honestly flew by and of course, there were a few minor hiccups, like the little man avoiding nap time but it was long overdue to get all of our closest friends and families into one home to celebrate. And even though Finn was pretty clueless about the chaos of the party, he sure did get a kick out of everyone in Mickey Mouse Ears!
There was minimal party decor, but what really stood out was my Mickey Mouse Wall Decal DIY on our main floor. The night before my poor mom was put to work to cut those babies out from black bristol board. By using a combination of a drink and a shot glass, we traced the Mickey Mouse Silhouette and painstakingly cut them out one by one. But, it was totally worth it! (thanks mom)
Now, that the party was a success, my new challenge is finding a reason to wear these Mickey Mouse jeans again!
What theme did you do for your little ones birthdays? Let me know in the comments below!
Date nights are far and few between these days. Besides having to snag a babysitter, we also absolutely love spending time with our friends as a group (because they are so awesome, shout out to our crew!) so it leaves only a handful of nights for just us, solo.
So, when we finally get the chance, I go all in and put on some makeup! Now, I should confess, makeup has been more of a luxury lately. So, when Makeup Forever sent over a customizable palette filled with hues perfect for me, I knew exactly when I was going to use it. Our next date night.
First off, I love how the refillable metal palette allows me to pop in and out the pigments I buy. Plus, it saves space in my makeup bag because I am not carrying around single eyeshadows or blushes and I have them all in one safe spot. Then, when I overuse a particular shade, I can pop it out and replace the single Artist Face Color Highlight, Sculpt and Blush Powder, or Artist Color Eye Shadow.
We actually are heading out for dinner just the two of us this Friday night. We have a gift certificate we were gifted at Christmas, so it is the perfect excuse to call our parents to watch Finn. I am actually currently dreaming off the pasta I will be ordering at Fratellis in Tecumseh.
Where do you guys head for your date nights? Let me know in the comments below!
Last month, our little guy started daycare. So, it’s no surprise, the month of February was filled with coughs, runny noses and fevers. I mean, it hit us hard. At one point, our whole family was sick and with me just starting back at work, we were in over our heads. Especially, since we never had to deal with any high fevers with Finn before.
I’m sure I can speak for any mom of a little one, fevers are terrifying. After rushing to the walk-in-clinic just to find out it’s “viral” and the only thing we can do is treat the fever, you feel helpless. Thankfully, the timing was impeccable for Braun to send us both the ThermoScan5 Ear Thermometer and No Touch + Forehead Thermometer to arm us for the task of keeping those temperatures in check.
One of the scariest things about a sick baby is having no control. But, by simply taking their temperature, you can ease your anxiety because it helps to keep you informed and prepared. Because when you know the severity of a fever, you can at least quickly make a decision about the next steps.
We found we used both thermometers for different reasons during the handful of viruses we encountered the last month. We loved the Braun ThermoScan5 pre-warmed tip that minimizes the cooling effect that could result from the introduction of a cool probe tip. The pre-warmed tip helps ensure accuracy, measurement after measurement throughout Finn’s cold. Plus, the temperature is accurate to a tenth of a degree which helped guide us through the guesswork of interpreting Finn’s Fever. It is no wonder the Braun ThermoScan5 is used more than 1.5 million times a day around the world
But, the Braun No Touch + Forehead Thermometer was a game changer during those sleepless nights. The three of us were barely sleeping and when Finn finally would get some rest, there was no way I wanted to jostle him awake by taking his temperature. With its revolutionary dual technology and ultra-sensitive sensor, we could get fast and precise temperature readings either in touch mode, by placing the thermometer on the forehead, or by holding it in front of his forehead up to 5 cm away its safe to say both the ThermoScan5 Ear Thermometer and No Touch + Forehead Thermometer quickly have become some of our most reached for sick baby essentials.
Well, March Break, you were a real treat. Over the past 11 days, my family and I have enjoyed a low-key staycation. From taking our time and making pancakes for breakfast, day dates for lunch without the little guy and finally getting Finn to sleep through the night, our time off was a huge success. But, it is finally back to reality and back to the office.
So, because I will be switching my loungewear to officewear this week, I thought I would share my three office basics. These four items get worn together, and separately each week and can be mixed into any office wardrobe. Plus, all three items can be mixed into my weekend wear!
First up, a simple open black blazer. I scored mine for less than $40 a few years ago from H&M and I have been wearing it almost every week ever since. I love how it effortlessly polishes an outfit and can be paired with both trousers or jeans. Even though I got mine for a total score, there is a similar style available at Artizia. It’s around $200, but for the amount I have used mine, it is worth the investment. These two options are also super similar and more affordable, here and here. Lastly, here is another option on sale for $50 at Nordstrom.
Next, a simple feminine camisole is perfect to be paired with both blazers and cardigans. I love this option I bought before I started back to work in February (I actually also bought the black version too) and they are still available at H&M.
