With the 4th of July in our rear view mirrors, the dog days of summer are here! We are using the rest of summer to bask in the Colorado sunshine and trying to appreciate the heat before the seasons inevitably change. We have a few recipes that are helping us appreciate the heat (deal with the heat) and hope you’ll check them out! From vegan ice creams to a couple of bonus recipes, we have something for everyone here!

  1. Vegan Coconut Black Sesame Ice Cream with Strawberry Swirl

This beauty of an ice cream pairs black sesame and strawberries. The unlikely pairing is perfectly coupled with the vegan coconut ice cream base. Our friend Sarah at Snixy Kitchen made this recipe no-churn, so it doesn’t require any special equipment to make at home!

  1. Honey & Lemon Thyme Ricotta Ice Cream

Fresh whole milk ricotta blended into a rich and creamy egg-free ice cream – served up with vanilla peaches. We love this as a use for all of the bruised peaches you might have picked up for a deal at the Farmer’s Market!

  1. Blueberry White Chocolate Raspberry Swirl Ice Cream

The white chocolate chips dancing in this ice cream are the perfect complement to fresh blueberries and raspberries pureed and swirled throughout!

She describes the recipe: “All the deliciousness of pie, deconstructed in an ice cream parfait – super simple to prep ahead and assemble later. Blueberry-Rhubarb Pie Ice Cream Parfaits are fun for summer holidays and anytime ice cream is called for with vegan options included!” … we can’t help ourselves around them! Firecrackers and sparklers make the 4th of July extra sparkly, but delicious recipes are what we really look forward to! Here are 4 of our favorite recipes for the 4th of July that you can make ahead of time. Take a little extra time this week and weekend, and have all of Independence Day off to enjoy the summer weather and take in the fireworks show!

  1. Strawberry Rhubarb Pie a la Mode Popsicles

Nothing says summer fun more than a decadent popsicle. These beauties feature a strawberry rhubarb compote, a vanilla cream layer and a healthy sprinkle of homemade (gluten-free) pie crust topping. We love that you can make all of the ingredients ahead of time, and when you are ready to serve, sprinkle with the pie crust topping and everyone will think you’ve been slaving away in the kitchen!

Make Strawberry Shortcake Ice Cream

  1. Naked Vanilla Berry Ice Cream Cake

A naked cake featuring 2 layers of vanilla bean cake and a layer of homemade vanilla bean berry ice cream…summer’s perfect cake! This dreamy cake was whipped up for Rodelle by Beth at The First Year. This recipe is a two day project – but it’s not overly time intensive. Make and bake the cake and allow it to cool completely. Make the ice cream and assemble the cake, then allow it to freeze overnight. The next day add the thin layer of cool whip, decorate the top of the cake, and freeze it until ready to serve! Trust us…it’s worth it!

The Vanilla Market is currently closed as suppliers wait until 2018 season officially opens in July. The opening date of the vanilla market for the past several years has coincided with Madagascar’s Independence Day (June 26th), but this year the vanilla market will open two weeks later on July 15th. The decision to delay the market opening stems from a conscious effort to increase vanilla quality in Madagascar and is predicted to have a positive effect.

Exports for this coming harvest will not start until October, and will not start arriving into the US until later in the 4th quarter. Current bean prices remain at all-time highs because the vast majority of 2017 crops were low quality due to premature picking. This took place because farmers were afraid of theft, and wanted to sell them as quickly as possible. We will have more information on bean quality of the 2018 crops after the market opens in July.

Other regions Uganda, Indonesia and India are still slow to come on board to increase inventories, but they are planting more vines and these beans will be available in the next few years. Once there is a greater supply of vanilla beans available, prices will drop. We continue to build our farmer networks in Madagascar and Uganda, and due to our vertical integration we remain very competitive on pricing within the industry.

Our farmer-owned association of vanilla farmers in Madagascar, Sahanala, is working hard to build trust to encourage vanilla farmers to improve their farming practices and increase output and quality from their vines. Sahanala has employed initiatives like dedicated health programs, a pension fund and rice bank donations to improve the daily lives of vanilla farmers and their families. With the associations’ fair market price and profit sharing, farmers have a greater incentive to register and participate in traceability programs. Rodelle can trace our vanilla back to the specific association and farmers who grew those vanilla beans. With this partnership, Rodelle has eliminated unnecessary links in our vanilla supply chain to provide a better product to our customers. Learn more about Rodelle’s supply chain and partnerships that are helping to shape the vanilla market of the future with our video here:
