Prep time: 10 minutes
Complete Time: 40 minutes
A self-inflating camp mattress or camp bed 3 and a half inch - this is the main thing that people need.
There is a sleeping bag liner that you can use as a fitting liner on the pad. Roll up the bag to make it compact.
A couple of pillows - travel pillows camp pillows with little pillowcases.
A sheet of plywood is not very thick to support the head while sleeping.
Kindly find the video version of this set up here or below!
The next steps are just three. Setting up the rear seat, setting up the materials in the right way, and adding the chords to the plywood.
Let’s begin the process!
Go to the back seat or rear seat of the SUV. Great news for SUV owners! Some SUV models have the ability where the rear seats fall, pretty easy for a flat position.
Clean the rear seats and other unclean materials well with cleaning liquids.
Pull any one of the rear seats down. You need an arrangement that doesn’t hit the back of the front seat. Very flat no bumps; it’s just one smooth continuous surface. A foot and a half space must be present below it.
Remove the headrest on the side. While sleeping, you don’t need bumps. When you are driving, you need something flat in the backseat. Complete this need with the help of the plywood and Para chords.
Place the plywood on the rear seat. Position it on the seat such that its end touches the back window.
Add the keychain. Clip the key chains to the plywood from the SUV window. It must hang from each headrest support. After the two get clipped well, you can get ready for the bed. Now, this is a nice long sleeping platform for you.
Place the set up over the rear seats of the SUV. The end of the plywood must hit the back of the SUV till the end. In this way, the plywood balances and sits on the rear can seat perfectly.
You can place the inflatable bed on the plywood and then add the bed sheets and the pillows. Check if everything is safe to use. Don’t allow any loose ends or dangerous stuff to hang in the setup.
We can use plastic bins, duffle bags as an alternative.
If they don’t fall or are with bumps, then you can build a solid platform with plywood. Lay it across, put materials underneath, and put little legs to keep it off the uneven areas.
Inflate the bed stuff and place all the materials on the plywood. Check that there is a lot of leg room.
A quick note:
A 5'11 person can easily sleep in the back seat with an inch or two spaces left.
After you’re done, the set up must look like this:
This set up is the easy way with the back seat falling nicely. Don't use sheets during warm nights. During cold nights, you can use warmer clothes to stay warm.
All this stuff is usually stored in the back of the SUV when not in use. These materials go in the back storage of the SUV for later use.
Doesn’t this sound awesome?
If you want, you can change the arrangement. Just change the plywood position or the rear seat on the go. Change the plywood or other materials according to your needs. It’s a pretty easy quick set up for the busy traveler or a rebel!
Trying and finding new set ups are one of the best parts of travel. Beds set up combinations from other travelers maybe just one way to bring back the magic of a tour. Let’s hope for some of us, who have bed challenges; this set up solves the sleeping problem.
What setting up of bed do you like while traveling? What is your favorite way to sleep and rest while in an SUV?

Are you having trouble understanding how to set up your camp kitchen? Is your family outing being ruined by confusion and frustration? Worry not, as we bring to you a detailed and easy to understand step-by-step guide on how to set your camp kitchen up.
With a thorough explanation at your hand, it will be easy for you to set up Cabela's mega-camp kitchen without the fear of hurting yourself or breaking any essential equipment. Outdoor activities require cooking on the spot - even if you are merely indulging in a backyard barbeque – hence, it is necessary to be efficient with setting a camp kitchen.
First, we are going to address a few precautions to consider that we do not have to do anything with the setting up of the camp kitchen directly but it is essential to take notice of.
How To Set Up Portal/Cabela’s Mega Camp Kitchen Outdoors?
To ensure that your camp kitchen set is safely portable, you need to check the straps and material of the bag it is being carried in. This is to avoid any mishandling and possible injury by the equipment of the set falling out. It is also necessary to ensure that you have packed all the big to small items of the set before leaving for the location you will be camping out in, or traveling to. Any missing part will create a hindrance in building the camp kitchen to its entirety.
Plastic containers for washing dishes!
A lot of campers using this kitchen refer to use the already provided sink that comes with the set to wash their dirty dishes in. But we suggest carrying a separate set of two plastic containers for this task – one for soapy water, and another for clean water. As the provided sink is too large to contain a small amount of water, and a little flimsy to not slosh the dirty water over, this trick is recommended for easy dishwashing.
Now that we know what specifics to reflect upon before doing the actual deed, let us we move onto explaining how to set up a portable camp kitchen, through easy steps:
This is the most important part of the portable camp kitchen, as it serves as the base for your entire set. It has been folded from both the sides and in the middle. The first thing to do is the pull out the folded legs of the table at both sides. Make sure to lock the clicks between the legs of the tables where they are adjoined at the base. If those clips are not checked and straightened out, the table may collapse under heavy weight.
The next step within this phase is to straighten out the folded middle part to the extent that it cannot be pulled out anymore so that it is sturdy enough to support the entire frame.
Step 2: The removable/attachable pantries
The camp kitchen set comes with two extra pantries, which you can hang anywhere you wish to. However, right below the two side tables, there is enough space that provides convenient placing of the pantries. All you have to do is flatten out the crumpled fabric of the pantry, and then attach the loops at sewn into edges to the hooks underneath the table.
This makes sure that your pantry hangs safely, and is completely uncurled for optimum use and strong base – as it comes with six solid hooks. After this step, the initial structure has been formed for your camp kitchen.
Step 3: The shelf
Next thing to do is to attach the shelf at the other side of your camp kitchen – not the front side. The back of the base table comes with two hollow rods at each end of the surface. The shelf has to be pulled taut and straightened out. Two rods will appear at the bottom of the two shelves, both of which come attached in one frame. Carefully slide those slim rods into the hollow ones at the sides of the middle part of the kitchen, make sure to push it down until it cannot go further anymore. The topmost shelves come with hooks underneath for you to hang anything you want.
Step 4: The grill
After you have attached the shelf at the back, the next step is to attach the grill over the middle part of the base structure. This grill has to be fitted into space right over the folded legs at the center, where there are knobs to attach to. You have to place the edges of the grill into these knobs, and ensure that they have fitted into them tightly enough not to fall out.
Step 5: The sink
The sink is a flimsy bag-like structure that you have to place right over the grill. The curved edges of the center part serve as the base for the sink to hold onto with the help of curved knobs. Double-check whether it is firmly attached or not to avoid any mishaps. Furthermore, make sure that the drainage pipe is connected to the bottom of the sink.
Step 6: The table top
The final piece is the table top that fits like a second skin above the sink, over the curved edges of the center frame. All you have to do is press it down until it cannot move anymore, and there you have it!
You are now equipped with your portable camp kitchen ready to use. At family gatherings, you won’t have to waste any extra time of mantling the camp kitchen with difficulty and end up frustrated.
After you get the gist of the structural formation the first time, it is extremely easy to set the whole kitchen up other times – within fewer minutes. And if you think that it is problematic to dismantle the kitchen, you’ve been mistaken. It is tremendously easy to do so – adding to that, all the pieces of the set will fit right back into the bag they came in.
Here is video that you can follow through for visual explanation on how to set your portable camp kitchen outdoors:

How to pitch a large family tent - YouTube
Decide on the layout your tent position
The rule of thumb before setting up a tent is to find an area that is even. Next, make sure that debris like twigs and stones are removed. Low lying areas are strict no because water can stagnate when it rains.
Use a groundsheet or footprint before you set up. That enables you to position your tent and keeps it clean. However, you can make use of a tarp. Tents can be pitched even when it is raining provided you take some additional care.
You need to unroll your tent
Since you have found the ideal spot for your pitching your tent, you can now unroll it. You can make use of a groundsheet or tarp. Likewise, when taking the tent, you can place the tent poles after folding the tent.
Unfold the tent
You can now unfold the tent depending on the footprint you have set up.
The tent poles have to be fixed at the right spots. If you are using a tunnel tent, you can set any pole into the channel because they are the same in size. Other tents come with color codes to help you out.
Fix the tension in the poles
Once down, you have to secure the poles. It helps the tent to become into an arch shape. You will note that once the tent is fixed on the ground, you can fix the tent poles. This helps in to ease the tension and to adjust the fabric of the tent.
Get the tent upright
Now it is time to get the tent in the upright position. The tent pegs have to be kept ready to secure the end lines. The doors of the tent have to be stretched out completely.
Peg out the tent
You need to peg the tent and adjust the lines. You are just checking for those small niggles if any.
Place the inner tents
You need to ensure that the inner tent is ready.
How to pitch or take down a tent when it is windy?
Did you know that wind speeds of more than 40 mph are equal to that of the force of gale? With such wind speeds, pitching and taking down tents can be difficult and dangerous. To help you out, below are few ideas that can help you pitch as well as take down a tent without hassle.
You can always wait for the wind speeds to reduce. But when it is getting dark, and you are in a hurry to move out from the campsite, then you have to start pitching or taking down your tent with precautions.
If the wind speeds do not seem to settle down, then it makes sense to find a shelter near a boulder or ridge. You can wait in there until the wind speeds die down.
Before pitching or taking down your tent, always make sure the surroundings are safe. Perhaps a large tree is near you with a dead branch. Hence, pitch your tent in a place, which is less sheltered.
The tent body should be pitched such that the aerodynamic part is facing the wind. However, do not place the door towards the wind. Once down, you can stake the tent on the ground.
It is always nice to have extra hands. Perhaps, your partner or friend can help you control the fabric that is flapping when attaching the poles. After attaching the poles, you can attach the fly of the tent.
Taking the tent down
Taking the tent down might seem easier than pitching a tent, but you need to know a few tips just to ensure that you are doing it the right way. Many owners tend to leave the inner areas of the tent up you might not want to do that.
When it is raining, then you must ensure that the inner parts of the tent are dry and safe. Quick wear and tear occur when the inner parts of the tent start getting wet. If it is windy, then wait for some time until the wind dies down and then take down the tent.
Make sure that the doors are unzipped when folding the tent as the air is expelled outside. Not to mention, the tip of the tent tends to peg up when you are rolling it up. Having these pointers in mind next time when you fold your tent can help you take down your tent with ease.
You must choose a location that is free from debris and dirt.
The location must also be flat. You do not want to pitch your tent on an uneven surface.
It is best to start by laying down a ground cloth or footprint.
You should make sure that the tent position is such that you are not facing the sun or wind. However, do not compromise on ventilation.
Do trials in your backyard with your partner or kids before you decide to visit a park or campsite.
Always make sure that you are following the instructions given in the manual.
When the ground cloth or footprint exceeds the tent size, then tuck it in, as rainwater will not get collected.
There you go you can now pitch a large family tent without hassle. Just make sure that you follow the above pointers as it will help you immensely set it up quickly. Remember, to have fun when doing so and make sure to enjoy your trip in the camping site along with your family.

How to repair tent poles - Re-thread Cord - the easy way - YouTube
First, measure the section that has to be replaced. Generally, the new section will be extra-long, so cure down part of the new pole to suit. You can cut it according to the length of the old pole which you can replace with a small hacksaw. There you can put duct tape which helps to hold the pole in one place and prevent splintering. After that, remove the tape and sand its edges until it gets smooth.
Make it lie on the floor and start to untie the knot at one end. Please remember to keep holding shock cord.
Hold the shock cord and remove sections by one each time until you reach the section that has to be replaced.
Still, hold that shock-cord, do re-threading of cord back through the sections you removed temporarily and tie a big knot at its end. Please ensure that the cord is taught properly. You can modify the length of shock cord any time by angling the knot from one end of poles.
Lightweight Alloy Poles
High-end and most lightweight tents are flexible alloy poles. They are lighter and more reliable than those fiberglass poles. With anything, there will be a difference in qualities.
Find a wooden or metal ramrod in a suitable size to fit into the narrow end of the broken pole. Such rods are not those ready-made products you have to improvise.
Then slide the rod into narrow tube end and shot at the knot that fixes old shock cord to dislodge and pushes it out into the wide female end of that tent pole.
You can repeat this for other poles too. Shock cord is used for joining two or more tent pole section to assemble and store it.
Now measure the assembled pole length ones. There must be concave spots in the down part where the cords are knotted and fixed to a place. Then you can measure from those spots.
Now cut a part of shock cord in big size than the actual size of the tent pole. You will need some cord extra for tying knots.
On a straight way set those poles but leave it disassembled. Now thread the cord from the poles, and extra cordage get extended out of that wide female end of the pole.
Now thread out from one end through the metal washer which easily fits inside a pole and ties one knot around it. Now with the help of someone hold the pole or put it on a table and pull the knot into up to dent at the base. Pull out up to 2 inches and make own dent to secure that knot by squeezing the spot with the help of plier.
You can repeat this process at the other end in the pole section. This results in new shock cord which is loose while the poles are together but stretched and under pressure they disassemble.
Steel Tent Poles
If the bent steel pole has a straight section and not bent like out of shape, then you can try to straighten it yourself. But if you cannot do easily or for a shaped tent pole, you can hire a metal worker and buy a similar pole. These metal workers have tools to bring back the pole into shape and heat the pole without putting stress on the metal.
The poles that are replaceable then there are limited options. Sometimes there are replacement poles available for straighter sections. Normally but steel tent poles come in specific shape according to the model of tent.
You can also contact your retailer shop from where you bought that pole. If that is not successful, then contact any other retailer who sells the same brand of tent.
Some suppliers sell spare parts of the tent.
To contact the manufacturer of the tent is also not successful every time. They may not have stocks send to retailers and carry spare parts to support customers directly. And do not expect from a manufacturer to replace any single piece of the pole but they sell a complete set of a tent pole that comes from the production house. It cost you the same as a new tent.
These poles come in various brands, functions, and sizes. But they all will offer you the same level of support for camping shelter. We normally carry round shaped tent poles than square one because they are friendly with any fabric, easy to handle and compatible with various other fittings that help you to put your shelter.
They come in alloy and steel materials and have a spigot at the top of the pole generally. This spigot means pointy end which fits through an eyelet of the tent or the ridge end cap or spreader pole.
Most of them are adjustable with alloy made poles that feature a twist-look otherwise cam lock mechanism. The steel pole usually comes with a wing or nut lock in T shape. Some kits are there that have a fixed length pole that can fold down into three sections. While some of the brands produce their own pole kits suitable for your tents, most of them are interchangeable with different materials and adjustable length.
These are some instructions you can follow to repair a broken tent pole without getting frustrated or annoyed. All kinds of tent poles are made to fail at some moment or other due to wear of the cord around the end part of the pole. So before you think to throw it away, you can use the above-said process and allow you are fixing them up easily.
Are you wondering how to use a compass? How is magnetic north different from true north? How people find directions through compass? These are some questions that can bother you while you are on a camping trip.
Back when satellites and space didn't orbit the earth and when Google andUber Maps were not there to help, people used to get confused in finding directions, but they found their way back to the campsite with the help of a compass. People started learning how to use a compass and find out the right directions, and it becomes the best tool in finding the directions.
When you are traveling to woods or going camping, the compass is one of the most important parts of gear. A map without a compass is virtually worthless. While GPS has its benefits for hiking, it's not a good idea to rely alone on GPS. The battery of the device can get drained, and without any compass and map abilities, you can be left and stuck alone. It can take hours to relocate direction to the campsite.
Compass reading skill is important as it is a must for the survival of go for hiking or camping.
Mainly, the compass is a device used to point you towards the right direction. It is a navigation device that shows directions using cardinal points (cardinal directions).
There are four main directions: north, south, east and west on the compass. Directions which fall in between these are described by two directions in which they fall in between. For instance - direction between north and west would be called as northwest.
In this world, full of advanced technology and Smartphones, why would we at any point need an old-fashioned compass?
As it comes to light our all highly advanced technology has a battery, which is limited.
For instance, if you happen to be camping in the middle of wildwoods, like nowhere, and your highly advanced map and GPS devices fail, you have no idea how happy you will be to have that old-fashioned compass with you. You can use that compass in figuring out your location, what is near you and directions to the place where you want to go.
Maybe your battery lives on, or you have brought along portable charges, which is the possibility that you will get network and have served in the center of wildwoods.
Above that, you can get your phone lost or broken. Many people who go camping won't even take their phone with themselves for the only reason that they don't want to drop their phone into the river, lose it or smash it on the rock. So there is no reason to rely solely on the phone to get you to the location where you desire to go camping.
Basic Parts of Compass
Nowadays, there are various types of compass available in the market, but they serve the same purpose. And that is, allowing you to locate north and find your way in the wildwoods. Although compasses point towards the north, several of them come with additional features and items.
Magnetized needle - usually red colored division of the magnetized needle always points towards the magnetic north. It's not the true north; more will be explained in a few moments.
Rotating bezel - it has markings on its external border, named as azimuth ring, from 00 to 3600 with four directions. This bezel spins around the needle of a compass.
Baseplate - it is a transparent plate with various lines and markings. It has the direction of travel arrow and a ruler to calculate distance on the map.
Orienting arrows and lines - the orienting lines are the indications marked in and under the compass. They spin with the bezel while the needle continues to point towards north. Orienting arrows are situated in the center of orienting lines and the bezel. It points towards the azimuth ring's north.
How to read a compass?
How to Use a Compass || REI - YouTube
Reading compass is quite simple. If you want to read a compass, you are only required to know one single thing - the one tip of the needle always points towards the North Pole. The north-pointing tip is near all the time red while the other tip of the needle can be of any color.
The compass can get you to any location easily. For instance, you were told the best location of camping was on the west end of the lake.
The first and foremost thing you have to do is to locate west on the compass. Turn the compass till you see that the west lines are exactly aligned with the direction of travel arrow. See how simple it is to find the direction you want.
You can do this to find any direction. But always remember that the direction of travel should be straight and directly in front of you, and whatsoever direction is aligned with that arrow is the direction in which you are moving.
Always, before start moving, check twice that the red end of the needle is pointing towards the North Pole on the compass. If not, something might not be right.
While you walk, repeatedly look down at your compass. It will keep you on the straight path, and you will not deviate to left or right. One more pro tip is to keep an eye on the sun. Most of us possibly acknowledge the fact that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west. Moreover, during noon the sun is hardly in the south when you travel in the northern hemisphere.
Magnetic North vs. True North
Always, the needle of the compass points towards the magnetic north pole, which is not the true North Pole. Topographic maps turn out to be aligned towards the true North Pole. So, this is an important thing which should be given attention.
Declination - the difference between the angle of true north and magnetic north. This difference can be high depending upon your location in the world. When you use topographic map and compass, ensure that you take account of this difference. You can carry out this by using the degrees marked on the external edge of the rotating bezel.
Point the declination degree with tape or marker, or write it so that you don't forget. When pointing the direction and aligning the needle with the arrow, this is the point you need to consider the difference. As you find your way, make sure that the needle always points towards the true North Pole.
