When it comes to getting a dog that can live in an apartment, size does matter. Large paws and tall legs won’t always combine well with small living spaces. However, the size of your dog isn’t the only thing that matters. When searching for the perfect canine companion for your apartment, you should also take into consideration the dog’s energy level, noisiness, and even friendliness.

The best apartment dogs are usually those who are quiet, laid back and simple to train. This makes the entire process of adjusting to a new environment much easier. When selecting the best dog for your apartment, many pet owners prefer to adopt a dog that’s best suited to their lifestyle. For example, if you live a relatively active life, then choosing a dog who’s more outgoing would be best.

Types of Good Apartment Dogs

To make things much simpler, here a brief list on what most believe to make the best apartment dogs. An apartment dog can be classified as:

  • Hypoallergenic
  • low energy level dog breed
  • A pocket size small dog breed

What most people who live in apartment complexes ideally want are low shedding, allergy friendly pups. A hypoallergenic dog is a four-legged companion who doesn’t shed any fur. Furthermore, a hypoallergenic dog is known for producing minimal amounts of dander, making them some of the most ideal partners for those with allergies.

Low-energy dogs are usually pups that aren’t considered overly active. Low-energy dogs tend to adapt quite seamlessly to an apartment environment as they are usually the ideal couch potato partner. These types of dog companions may often go out for short walks, instead of a longer one. So, they’re ideal for owners who tend to live a busy lifestyle.

Lastly, most people who live in apartments may not have enough room to accommodate a pup.

For those of you who do live in a much smaller apartment, it’s best recommended that you choose a smaller sized dog breed that’s capable of adjusting to small space.

Best Dog Breeds for Apartments

When it comes down to picking the best apartment dogs, it’s important to remember that dogs come in a variety of shapes and sizes. As long as the canine you’ve adopted is adaptable and easy to train, then they’ll do well while living in an apartment. Although, it’s crucial that future dog owners adopt the correct dog for their lifestyle. Below we’ve created a list on who we believe make the best apartment dogs.

Boston Terrier

A true classic among owners who live in apartments. The Boston Terrier is without a doubt one of the more popular dogs that are commonly seen roaming around large cities. Their popularity from apartment livers mostly comes from the requirement for minimal exercise, adapt very well to small spaces, and are incredibly fun to keep around. If you are searching for a dog made for apartment spaces, then the Boston Terrier is your best bet.

Pros

The Boston Terrier is a small dog known for its friendliness. They are highly adaptable and do quite well in all sorts of apartment buildings. They’re also low shedding, easy to train, and don’t bark too much.

Cons

Unfortunately, Boston Terriers are not one of the healthiest breeds out there. This canine is quite prone to eye problems, patella luxation, and breathing discomfort.

Mastiff

For those of you who are more interested in larger dogs, the Mastiff may be the kind of pooch you’re looking for! The Mastiff dog breed has become iconically known for its large size, wrinkly faces, and laid-back demeanor. These large-sized canine breeds make the perfect pet for those who are looking for an easy going giant dog. They’re ideal for owners who live in a much larger apartment are with elevators.

Pro

Giant-sized, gentle, easy to get along with and very low maintenance.

Con

You’ll need to wash in between their wrinkles and folds on a regular basis. Their size can also be quite intimidating to most people who are unaware of the dogs gentle disposition.

Cavalier King Charles Spaniel

These pups are known for their love of cuddling. They will lay on your lap and beg for belly rubs at any chance they get. They’re very attached to their owners, so small apartment spaces are very well suited for them. The largest concern mostly comes from having to house train them, as they can be quite difficult to train. But, if you give them plenty of outdoors and positive reinforcement, they’ll rapidly become one of your most trustworthy apartment companions.

Pros

Good-natured, docile, quiet, and enjoy cuddling with their owners.

Cons

Is known to be prone to a few health problems common to the breed, and can be quite difficult to train as well.

Chihuahua

Another classic among apartment dwellers. The Chihuahua is perhaps one of the more popular apartment dogs to have. These little canine pals are not only very small in stature, but they’re also very easy to maintain. Chihuahuas don’t require tons of exercise either, taking them out for short walks is all they’ll need. The best part of it all, they are quite easy to travel with simply do to their small size.

Pro

These miniature-sized pups are portable, friendly, low-maintenance, and require a minimal amount of exercises.

Cons

Unfortunately, they are well known for being bossy and quite annoyingly loud.

Greyhounds

Greyhounds, though traditionally known for their high energy and skinny legs, make surprisingly good apartment pets. Despite their size, Greyhounds require minimal amounts of exercise and can be easily satisfied with a daily brisk walk around the park. Additionally, Greyhounds are low shedding, laid-back dogs known for their friendly, calm nature that makes them great choices for smaller apartments.

Pros

Require minimal amounts of exercise, low shedding, friendly, clam, and laid back.

Cons

Are quite independent and won;t seek much attention from their owners, so if you’re looking for a clingy companion, Greyhounds may not be for you.

Pugs

Identifiable for their squished faces, Pugs are playful and loyal dogs. They need to be close to their owners as much as possible an do not do well when left alone for too long. Pugs are not generally loud dogs, which means no special training needed to keep your neighbors happy. Due to their laziness, quietness, and small size, Pugs make fantastic companions for apartments of any size.

Pros

Friendly pups capable of getting along with other pets and people.

Cons

They’re a brachycephalic dog breed, meaning they are known for having tons of health issues. They also enjoy eating a lot, so be careful of obesity.

Schipperke

The Schipperke is a small breed of canine with a large personality. They are very easy to train and do best when they always have a task to perform. While not the most energetic, these dogs will require some form of entertainment. Their coats are simple to care for with regular brushing and they are known for being a quiet breed. With all of that said, along with their small size, makes them a great option for small apartment spaces.

Pro

Quiet, compact, and easy to get along with.

Cons

Require tasks to be performed so having a chew toy to stave off any boredom can work, and regular brushing.

Great Dane

If you’re searching for an apartment dog capable of guarding your living space, then the Great Dane may the proper choice for you. These canine pals are incredibly smart, loving and loyal. Despite their large size, Great Danes actually do very well in apartment spaces. This is probably due to most Great Danes being easy- going dogs.

Pros

They’re perfect for owners who are searching for larger breeds of dogs. They do incredibly well in apartment spaces as they don’t tend to bark a lot and are the best lap dogs.

Cons

While they do quite well in apartments, the Great Dane is a dog breed better suited for much larger apartments because of their size.

Yorkshire Terrier

The Yorkshire Terrier is excitable little dogs that may seem gentle and dainty, but in reality, are extremely bossy. Yorkshires often weigh as little as 7lbs and have been estimated to live up to 11 to 15 years. So, if you’re looking for a small pet breed, who got a large personality, then the Yorkshire Terrier is suited for you.

Pros

Known to be highly adaptable to apartment spaces due to their compact size.

Cons

While they may be small, Yorkshire require tons of exercise.

Conclusion

Always keep in mind that every dog is an individual. While every breed has a general personality and disposition, there will always be variations among them. Simply research carefully, and choose the pet best suited for your apartment and lifestyle.
