If you are wondering if you can include a famous character from the books, animations or video games into your designs that you plan to sell online or offline, then this video is for you.

I am NOT a lawyer, I am a designer. This information is based only on my own experience. Please contact a lawyer and read terms of agreements of any website you are selling on.

No, you can’t use famous characters as well as brands of products, logos of products or of the models and pet owners peoples photos in your designs.

Everything in your designs and artwork has to be your own created by you.

You can sell portraits of people and pets but you need to get a special release document from all of them signed and upload it to the website you are selling on.

You can use free for commercial use fonts as part of your illustration (I have a video about that).

☞ How about public domain images or textures?

I do not suggest using public domain images as you can’t know 100% where they came from and who created them.

☞ What if you see someone selling illustrations or designs with famous characters?

They will eventually be banned from the website or there can even be much worse consequences for those people.

I also have a video on do you keep the copyright to your images when you sell online.

Hope this video was helpful for you to find out if you can use a famous character in your artwork and designs for sale? Thanks for watching!

Do you keep the rights to your designs when you sell them online? - YouTube

Do you keep the rights to your designs when you sell them online?

In this video, I talk about who keeps the rights to your artwork, repeat pattern designs, or other creative products you are selling online.

I am NOT a lawyer. Please do your research and/or contact a lawyer to learn more about the copyright and license types for artwork and graphic design.

Yes, you keep all the rights to your artwork and you can remove it from the website if you choose to stop selling your artwork or design online.

The website that you choose to sell your designs on does not keep the copyright to your images, but please read their terms of use before uploading your files.

Which rights do your customers get? That depends on which license type did they buy. Royalty Free or Extended License.

Also, there is an Exclusive License – you can create a file and sell it as an exclusive license personally to a client, but you can’t at the same time license it online after you sold it as an exclusive license already.

If you want to learn how to grow your pattern portfolio 15 times faster and improve your design skills while doing it, please take a look at my FREE WORKBOOK Grow Your Pattern Portfolio Fast.

Hope this video was helpful for you to get you started understanding art and design licenses and if you get to keep the rights to your artwork and designs if you sell them online, for example on microstock and print-on-demand websites. Thanks for watching!

How often to upload vector patterns for sale on microstock websites? - YouTube

How often to upload vector patterns for sale on microstock websites? In this video, I talk about my recommendations on how often to upload your vector designs and how many repeat patterns to upload every time based on 13+ years of selling my vector repeat patterns and vector illustrations on microstock websites.

My viewer Irene asked me:

“How often should I upload vector patterns for sale on microstock websites: every day, every week? And is it better to upload many patterns at the same time?”

1) As many as you can while keeping good quality. This is not a sprint, this is a marathon.

2) If you can keep up good quality, then the best sales growth I have had was when I was uploading 2-3 new vector patterns each day.

3) Sometimes, I couldn’t upload each day because life got in the way, so I would batch create new patterns in 2-3 hours and make true to have at least 10 new and different enough patterns each week. Then I would submit on a Tuesday or Wednesday each week. This method also worked well for me.

Please keep in mind, that if you upload patterns that are too similar in one batch, many can get rejected. I recommend MY FREE EBOOK with 15 ideas on how to create patterns faster and make them different enough from each other. Here you can request my Pattern Multiplication Checklist ebook

To sum up: create new patterns every day and stay as consistent as possible. Upload at least once per week closer to the start of the week.

The bonus for you: creating every day or a few times per week consistently will make you a better designer especially if you challenge yourself to get better and better every week by setting new goals to try different topics and styles.

YOUR TURN TO COMMENT:

How often do you create your designs and how often do you upload?

Hope this was helpful for you!
