Begin at once to live, and count each separate day as a separate life.
I’m in need of a vacation, but I’m an entrepreneur. Not easy! I’ve had a few days off here and there, and when there has been a long holiday weekend, but nothing fancy or very relaxing. Our budget, staffing and timing are all pointing to no summer vacation for the boss, yet…. I’ve discovered that I can have a summer vacation in bits and pieces and get some relaxation and satisfaction in while clients and customers are vacationing somewhere exotic. Here are my tips – I hope you can do one or two, or all seven of these!
Have lunch alfresco with an old friend. This is one of my favorite ways to give my mind a break, catch up with an old friend, and feel the summer sun. Having lunch outside reminds me of trips to Italy, eating a delicious meal in the beautifully lit, golden sun of the piazza. There are very few such sun lit golden piazza’s in the area, but there are plenty of great restaurants with excellent menus, and an outdoor space that can help my mind pretend I’m in Italy, and take a short mental vacation over a delicious meal and good conversation.
Catch after dinner drinks with coworkers and friends. We’ve had an explosion of great new gastropubs and new places to get handcrafted drinks in the area. Knocking work off a bit early, and joining some coworkers for happy hour has been another great way to take a short vacation break this summer. See below for my version of a Sherman Oaks Pub Crawl!
Go to the movies – somewhere new! That’s right, go see a summer blockbuster and find a theatre in an area of town that you have never been to before, and have always wanted to explore. Make sure to order the large tub of popcorn, and have fun! Taking yourself somewhere new is another way to squeeze in some summer vacation during your startup grind. See below to catch summer movie classics!
Watch the Sun Rise or the Sunset! Getting up to watch the sunrise, and greeting the day is a great way to be on “vacation” in your own backyard. If getting up early is not on your “vacation” schedule, make sure to set your alarm for the sunset. Grab a friend, or a loved one, your favorite beverage, and relax and watch the day close with spectacular colors and feelings of relaxation. Another way to feel like you’ve been away.
Turn it all off. For a day or an afternoon (at least a few hours) without electronics. Shutting your phone off, turning off your computer, and staying away from binge watching anything on Netflix is a great way to put your mind in vacation mode. It also provides those of us in Startup Grind a much needed break with huge results. Do one of the above suggestions, just stay quiet, or walk your dog. This break will also allow you to have a small vacation in the middle of your startup grind!
See some fireworks! One of my memorable mini summer vacation was taking the kids to the ballpark, eating hot dogs and enjoying being outside while watching one of my favorite sports. The park was featuring fireworks after the game. Though our home team lost, we had a blast watching and enjoying the fireworks!
Do your favorite childhood activity! Being a kid in Chicago, winters were long, so when summer arrived, it meant long games of street baseball and ice cream! Getting a triple scoop of ice cream on a sugar cone meant summer vacation like nothing else. I seek out the best ice cream shop around, and treat myself to a triple scoop with sprinkles on a sugar cone! That takes me back to many an enjoyable summer vacation, and gives me a break from the startup grind.
Here are some local activities to enjoy this summer that are near our Sherman Oaks Coworking Location:
Pub Crawl – Sherman Oaks Style: Yes, you can do a small, yet fun pub crawl in Sherman Oaks with a group of friends or coworkers. ! Start at the Blue Dog Beer Tavern for a great craft brew, Pulled Pork Fries, and a delicious burger (my favorite is the Blue Dog ).Happy Hour starts at 3 p.m.!
A short block away is Public School 818 with an excellent rotating tap, Chorizo Mac & Cheese for starters and finish up with a Nutella Cookie Sandwich. Happy Hour starts at 4 p.m.
Then on to, Tipsy Cow! The Tipsy Cow is located just up the street on Ventura, a short walk from the above two pubs. They have a great seating area outside, where you can catch the vibe of Ventura Blvd., and the summer sun. Start off with the Tipsy Tacos, or the Buffalo Blue Haystack Fries. Wash that down with a great craft beer on tap. Finish the evening with one of their Signature Milkshakes like the What ths Fudge is a Frush (Vanilla ice cream, Nutella and Banana) that you can make Tipsy! What a way to enjoy summer! Happy hour starts at 3 p.m.
What is summer in Los Angeles without a visit to the Hollywood Bowl? This summer choose from an evening with the LA Philharmonic, see A Chorus Line, or get tickets for Buddy Guy and Jeff Beck.
Catch a production of Shakespeare’s “MidSummer Night’s Dream, ” in the wilds of Topanga Canyon at the Theatrium Botanicum.

Ready to get your beach bod back? At OfficeSlice we believe in staying healthy and indulging ourselves (occasionally). Luckily we have three outstanding local fitness businesses that provide optimal workouts that go way beyond lifting weights at a big box gym.
Want to enjoy a fierce cardio workout with awesome music, and mood lighting? Then head to DragonFly Cycling.
DragonFly Cycling is located at 4455 Van Nuys Blvd, just north of Ventura Blvd. They are the leading indoor cycling studio in Sherman Oaks offering 50 minute cycling classes for everyone, 7 days per week.

Jessica Lewis is the owner and founder of Dragon Fly Cycling. After a foot injury prevented this fitness maven to continue long distance running, she gave indoor cycling a try and fell in love. “My initial excitement towards cycling quickly turned into an obsession,” she told OfficeSlice, “Bad day at work? Argument with my spouse? Frustration over LA traffic? Whatever it was, cycling became my salvation…. My go-to in both good times and bad.”
Jessica’s passion towards cycling and her innate desire to help others led her to give up her career in software and open DragonFly Cycling. “This studio is my dream come true, and I am fully committed to making DragonFly a success and positively impacting all those I have the honor to work with.”
When this author, who regularly cycles to work (no traffic for me!) took a class recently at DragonFly, I was challenged and inspired! In fact at one point, I don’t know if it was the music or the workout, I got a little choked up. As Jessica told us, “DragonFly is more than about changing your body, it’s about changing your life. In that room you have the potential to learn patience, love, kindness and gratitude.”
Interested in giving DragonFly Cycling a try? No matter your fitness level, jump on their $10 offer for first timers. Try one of their popular theme rides. It’s a fun, exciting way to work off that extra pumpkin pie!

Making new connections is always fun, and one of the perks of being in business. I am constantly making new connections, whether at a local chamber meeting or in line at the grocery store. Connections and new relationships take time to foster. Nowadays, when a new connection has been made, we immediately engage online.
I’ve been dismayed recently by a notable trend… the birth of the angry online persona. Instead of a pleasant, predictable introduction in an email, or a “hey great to have met you at last night’s networking event,” the email follow up seems to have been put on angry steroids.
What could have been an email or LinkedIn connection with style and class has turned into an online assault complete with four letter words, acronyms that make me blush, and all cap emails that urge me to act now or certain unprintable doom would come to me. The online persona of my new connection has now made me afraid to interact with them.
Maybe there wasn’t actually a connection after all.
What would James Bond do in a similar situation? If you’ve seen a James Bond movie, you know Bond finds himself stuck between a beautiful woman, a dangerous arch enemy and certain death if he winks the wrong way. Yet, he always conducts himself with charm, style and wit. Bond never once utters a swear word, nor a word in anger that he does not mean. “Nobody does it better,” if you remember one of the many Bond theme songs.
We have fantasized about finding ourselves at the dinner table, or at a swanky bar with James Bond, or someone like James Bond. What are those characters that he oozes that makes us want to share a drink with him? He has a license to kill, but that is not what makes him attractive. The elements of his character that make him attractive are charm, wit and style. What if you could be that person that others want to find themselves next to? Add the following to your business development activities:
1. Charm and Charisma – You think you have to be born with charm and charisma in order to spread it? Nope. Here is a quick and easy tip to have others think of you as exuding oodles of charm and charisma.
When making a new connection, stop and listen. Listen to their story and show an interest in them and their business. Ask appropriate questions, and really listen to their answers. The next day, send them a handwritten note. It’s what Bond would do… on monogrammed stationary. Repeat something from the conversation back to them. They’ll think you are utterly charming and attractive, just like Bond.
2. Style – Dress Impeccably. Bond always looks good. Whether he is skydiving, in a car chase, or ordering his favorite drink (martini, dry, shaken, not stirred) Bond is stylish, understated and never over the top. And yet, all eyes are on him when he walks into the room.
As you conduct yourself in business, think about your sense of style. What message are you giving to potential clients and referral partners by the way you dress? Could you be too casual? Or dressed for a funeral? Think about working with a stylist to come up with a look that relays to your audience that you have class and emanate authority.
3. Wit – We are living in a very sarcastic world. Between all the memes on our Facebook pages, and the raunchy comedy on YouTube, wit has almost disappeared.
Bond enjoys exchanging witty remarks with Ms. Moneypenny, the attractive woman who has caught his eye, and even his archenemy. It seems that Bond has a clever remark or observation for everyone he encounters.
Sarcasm can be hurtful, hostile and rude. Wit, on the other hand, is clever and memorable, and adds to your unforgettable persona. Improve your wit and watch the invitations to attend cocktail parties, dinners, and guest speaker requests role in!
Bonus Tip: KISS – Yes. We know. Bond always gets to kiss a beautiful woman in every single movie and novel. Sometimes he even gets to kiss more than one! But really, this stands for another value that Bond holds dear, Keep It Simple, Silly. Bond may tread the fine line between good and evil, but Bond knows what he’s after, travels light, and always has one crazy tool to pull out in case of an emergency.
For instance, my go to tool is my smartphone… which has a stylus and a note taking feature. I love to write down things that I want and need to remember. Creating a digital file doesn’t do it for me, but the actual act of writing it down is very important and it’s simple. What kind of tool can you include that will enhance your daily living, and not be something that you’re carrying around “just in case”?
Enjoy conducting business with class, wit & style, up your game, increase your clients and convert more sales!

Work is hard… that’s why it’s called work (and not play!) Consumed, busy, overwhelmed are all foundations to building high levels of stress for people. The American worker, and business owners are in a constant state of stress. Numerous studies show that job stress is the single largest factor for source of stress in American adults. In fact, the level of stress in the American worker has been progressively escalating. The perception of having little control and lots of demands are in direct correlation with increased rates of heart attacks, hypertension, and other illnesses.
Good news is we have remedies to the stress. There are easy, quick techniques to ally stress and feel better throughout the day. Coffee and sodas will give you a quick caffeine hit, but these techniques will make you feel better longer and give you an energy boost without chemicals. If you do these on a consistent basis, your perception of well-being will increase.
Here are three quick, easy ways to relieve the stress that you’re feeling right now. Take a moment for yourself and help relieve stress, get more done and find some balance and happiness in your work day.
Laugh! Have a laugh right now! Whether that’s watching a funny comedian on Youtube, or talking to the office funny person. Laughing helps increase oxygen intake and releases endorphins, helping you feel better. We all want to feel better, and laughter is the quickest route to it.
Breathe! If you can’t have a laugh or take a walk, then this breathing exercise will help. Close your eyes, inhale deeply to a count of four. Hold your breath for a count of four. Exhale for a count of four, and hold again for a count of four. You will increase oxygen, release endorphins and feel more awake for the challenges ahead of your busy day. You can do this exercise during different times of the day, or put a timer on and practice for 3 to 5 minutes.
It’s happened again. You are facing the start of a brand-new year full of new opportunities. You’ve got a brand spanking new calendar, a fresh new notebook, a blank slate for new creations and possibilities. What are you going to do this year to make it different? Better? More exciting? What’s it going to take to make 2017 the most memorable year yet?
To make the next year better than ever, add hustle. What is hustle, you ask?
Yes, it was a dance craze in the 70’s, but that is not what we’re talking about. Hustle is the non-stop need to keep a creation, project, or idea going until it succeeds. Hustle is constant, a persistence and focus, a need to fulfill and be fulfilled, seeking opportunities, connections, and new approaches. Hustle is an all-consuming, ongoing activity, and we all have it, but many of us choose not to use it.
How am I sure we all have hustle? It’s innate in everyone one of us. Hustle is what helped us survive and evolve. I am surrounded by entrepreneurs, startups and business owners that have learned to engage and use their hustle muscle. They are working their business, staying true to their focus, and creating strategies to succeed. Once you start using your hustle, it will help you strategize any impending downturns and setbacks.
How do you engage your hustle muscle?
Unfortunately, there isn’t a product you can pick up off a shelf in a store, or order on Amazon to help. The good news is hustle is in every one of us. Having a passionate idea and a commitment to succeed is what it takes to uncover hustle. Like I mentioned, hustle is a muscle that needs to be worked and engaged. The amount of hustle is in direct correlation to to the commitment and passion to see it through. Once your idea gets started, hustle helps to keep it going and keep it growing. Down turns during the creative process is a given, but hustle helps you pivot and keep you energized. Many of us get lost in the day to day, but showing up, and hustling for the next customer, the next sale and achieving the next benchmark keeps us going and growing. When you engage hustle, you are in constant motion. Nothing can stop you.
So start engaging and using your Hustle. Make sure that every day you are creating a new pathway to a potential new connection, reconnecting with your community, and uncovering the light that is deep within that makes you tick and get up in the morning. My wish to you in 2017 is, go forth and hustle. Good things come to those who DO.
Shared workspaces are not just for entrepreneurs and startups. Business owners that are considering giving up their long held office lease, or are no longer inclined to re-sign a 5, 10 or 20 year lease on an office suite, should consider a coworking space, like OfficeSlice in Sherman Oaks.
Here are some reasons to consider a shared workspace or coworking space if you’re downsizing your business.
Shared workspaces, or coworking spaces, offer established business owners immediate cost savings. Running an office and a business are capital intensive. Phone systems, internet, security, kitchen and bathroom supplies and maintenance are just some of the costs that are involved in maintaining and running an office. By moving into a shared workspace or coworking space you will cut overhead expenses immediately.
Another cost savings are flexible term agreements. Your capital is no longer tied up with the landlord holding on to 3 to 6 months of lease payments. Most coworking spaces, or shared workspaces only take a first and last month deposit, freeing up your capital to do more for you and your business.
Furniture is another way to save by moving into a shared workspace. Coworking spaces provide fully furnished suites, workspaces, locking filing cabinets, printers and copiers. All a business owner has to do is move their computer and files, jump on the internet and immediately get to work.
If you need to hire a team member, you can add them into the space at a reasonable rate. If you need to let people go, then the shared workspace will accommodate your fluctuations. Flexibility is the mainstay of a shared workspace.
There are other hidden costs to running and maintaining an office suite. One them is loss of time. By joining a shared workspace, a business owner can begin the transition from a fully charged, non-stop work life to one with more balance for family, home and friends. This transition is usually one of the hardest for those who have been in business for themselves for extended periods of time. By moving to a shared workspace where the focus is on the work, and not on maintaining the office, the business owner can transition to a slower pace, and begin to enjoy time and friends once again.
Another great benefit is an opportunity to mentor and network with other business owners, startups and entrepreneurs. Established business owners have extensive boots on the ground experience. Sharing these experiences and advice with others is worthwhile and brings an energized feeling of good will to all parties involved.
Say goodbye to your commute!
Buy finding a shared workspace closer to your home, the downsizing business owner can create even more time in their day! Shortening your commute is a another benefit and time saver by joining a shared workspace. Have clients come to you, and use the coworking space’s conference room. By eliminating the stress of a long commute, increasing time for family and friends, and cutting costs are all excellent benefits.
Though we are in the midst of an entrepreneurial renaissance, we are also at the beginning of the silver tsunami, the aging of the American Workforce. Many business owners will be transitioning out of their business, as well as downsizing and simplifying their business and lifestyle. Joining a shared workspace or a coworking space will provide tons of benefits to this segment of the workforce, allowing both a professional presence and yet greater flexibility.
Have you got an audacious, outrageous goal you’re currently pursuing?
Is it to climb Everest, take a turn in space, or skydiving? Maybe swimming with dolphins, or saving the elephants? Writing a novel or a screenplay? Or starting that company that’s been in your idea book for the past few years? We all have a Big Hairy Audacious Goal and some of us are doing our best to accomplish them.
Putting ideas into action is what brings audacious goals into focus, and attainability. Every great journey begins with a single step. When we’re in touch with our awesome goal, and understand what is required of us, and the risks involved, many of us go for it, nonetheless.
What does chasing a BHAG have to do with a coworking space in the San Fernando Valley of Sherman Oaks? Our coworking space in LA is filled with people pursuing their BHAGs. When you join or work at a coworking space you are immediately surrounded by passionate, driven people. Being in proximity of this passion and drive provides you with even more motivation to pursue your own Big Hairy Audacious Goal.
What makes the goals big? Each one of our coworkers has taken a risk, by going into business for themselves, stepping outside the café and their kitchen counters to make their dream a priority, make new connections, and reach a new level of focus, determination, and mastery previously unattainable.
What makes the goals hairy? There is no guarantee of success. We are all Sisyphus pushing our rocks up the hill. The challenge never ends. But we are determined to make each and every day better.
Audacious? The goals are daring, and take copious amounts of time, money, blood sweat and tears to pursue. Those that have reached the cover of the recent glossy business magazine make it look and sound easy. Those of us in the trenches know that those stories gloss over the times when the dream got so tough and so hard, you didn’t know if you could continue. But you made a decision to see to it to the end, and so you go on. As you move on and reach the other side of the challenge, you realize you come out better, brighter and smarter, just in time for the next challenge.
Take a moment to decide what is your BHAG. Stop saying you’ll start someday. Someday isn’t a date on the calendar, and it will never come. Make sure you surround yourself with passionate, driven people who are also pursuing their big goals with passion, determination and audacity. It makes the journey so much better!
We’d love to hear what your BHAG is! Drop us a line at email@example.com or post it on our Facebook page.
