Immigration is a hot topic in the UK and around the world right now. So when an intriguing thriller cropped up for Xbox, PC and PlayStation, I was interested. My The Occupation review takes you through a first-person investigative thriller where you play as a journalist trying to uncover the truth.

This indie gam is developed by White Paper Games, and published by Humble bundle (a great company to check out for their charitable sales). Delivering a stealth adventure promises quite a lot in the visuals and story department.

It’s a shame the latter doesn’t really happen and the technical performance of The Occupation makes it hard to really recommend right now.

How Does The Occupation Play
The Occupation Release Trailer [PEGI] - YouTube

The Occupation is a first-person game that leans heavily on stealth and its investigative story. As you take control of the journalist investigating what happened following an explosion.

You will need to sneak into guarded ‘staff only’ areas and search for clues, or other miscellaneous items to enable them to progress.

The Occupation struggles quite a lot with its pacing however as the game operates entirely in real-time. This means the missions tend to follow a pattern, you have 1 real-world hour to find all the clues you can.

Clues and prompts give you more topics to discuss, as at the end of the hour you interview another person in relation to the incident. That is the crux of the game’s story.

While the real time element could potentially be a good idea. Unfortunately, the way it’s done here simply doesn’t quite work.

Where games like The Walking Dead or even L.A. Noire have similar gameplay moments in them, the delivery is far more in a game pace.

Here, it just becomes a bit of a drag.

Presentation And Graphics

The game is presented with stylised artwork, with depth and manner that reminds me of the Dishonored games. The environments are well designed and realistic to the extent that they feel familiar.

The characters all have mannerisms that feel deliberate, feel well designed, some of the characters even walk and talk in ways that feel organic and human.

The sound work is pretty good here, however the sound prompts appear on the subtitles, and I found this a little distracting at times.

Main Features

As I have eluded to, the issues found in The Occupations pacing make it hard to fairly judge this game, the rendering, effects and character work – notably the voice acting – are stellar here.

The plot (which I am desperate to not spoil here) is intriguing and does raise some interesting questions. Mostly about immigration, and open society – but the game has one potentially fatal flaw.

Where the maps are designed to hide all the best clues, where the AI is progressed to intercept you if you are in hidden/staff areas. You may find yourself becoming frustrated, or worse still bored, by the game simply trying to be a bit too clever.

Outside of playing through this story there isn’t much here either. Considering the game isn’t too long, my The Occupation review time came in a just under 6 hours.

You could go through it again of course but it never really compels you to do so.

Should You Play The Occupation? Our 5th highest award. Common games would traditionally score around 10/10. See more on our review system created by gamers here.

A game that looks great, with a conceptually great story, that ultimately makes itself a chore to play. with no way to tell which clues are pertinent, this seems to be a game built to asks questions, that ultimately hides all its best answers.

It also seems to be suffering from a dependence of replay, assuming that players may push for the better endings. Or maybe an assumption that guides will be resorted to.

Either way, there isn’t enough about the game or it’s real-time based pacing to keep you coming back as much as it would like you to.

Gamers how would suit this game

Whilst I can’t think of a direct comparison here. There are some elements of adventures like The Walking Dead or L.A. Noire in the evidence hunting and interrogations. Maybe even a hint of some Quantic Dream games or Frogwares Sherlock series

I would recommend this game to patient players who want to earn their story. However, if you like something that isn’t conducted at a much slower pace, perhaps avoid this one.

Today we have a new The Sinking City gameplay trailer as the title gets closer to release on the PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Brought to you by Frogwares, this is an adventure game you may want to check out in 2019.

The Sinking City will release on 27 June 2019 and it’s a title we’re looking forward to here following some great adventures as Sherlock Holmes from the same developer.

Need to know more? We have a TON of info on The Sinking City below guys along with the trailer & screenshots.

For more on upcoming games, go to our 2019 games hub here.

The Sinking City Details
The Sinking City | Rotten Reality - Gameplay Trailer - YouTube

The Sinking City is a game of investigation and mystery taking place in a fictional city inspired by the works of H.P. Lovecraft.

Step into the shoes of a 1920s private investigator, Charles Reed, whose mind is slowly being devoured by terrible insanity.

In pursuit of a cure, the detective finds himself in Oakmont, Massachusetts. A city suffering from unprecedented floods of clearly supernatural origins. A city trembling on the brink of madness, just like Charles.

Can you survive this beleaguered town and untangle the mysteries responsible for its tragic situation or will you be driven beyond madness yourself?

The Story
  • Uncover an Otherworldly Mystery: The City of Oakmont, Massachusetts is slowly rotting away from a mysterious flood that slowly envelopes it both physically and metaphysically. You’re going insane and humanity is on a brink of destruction from forces beyond human comprehension.

This is the world in which private investigator Charles W. Reed finds himself in. Use your detective skills to reveal the truth behind the powers gripping you, the city and the world and experience multiple endings based on your choices.
  • Those Were Different Times: Step into city of nightmares set in the roaring 1920’s, an era when the United States was dealing with prohibition, racial segregation and a growing class divide from the post-WW1 economic boom.
  • The Twisted Locals: Even before the great flood, residents of Oakmont could be perceived as peculiar. But after the disaster, the level of insanity raised to incomprehensible levels – thoughts and actions unimaginable in ordinary society are now the norm.

Cults, fish-people, witches, and weavers. Bloody rituals with human sacrifices, experimentations on monstrosities that came from the sea, competition of criminal families and much more – all just a routine in Oakmont as the unknown forces of the flood slowly entwine themselves into the very life and fabric of the city and the minds of those left behind.
  • Story Rich Side Quests: Each additional quest is a complete story that brings to light more of the monstrosities of Oakmont and its inhabitants.
KEY FEATURES

INVESTIGATION

  • No Handholding: There are no objectives on the map and straightforward quests. No magic waypoints automatically telling you where to go or search. You need to piece together the mystery yourself by finding clues, locations and suspects using your cunning and the few tools at hand.
  • Learn to Live Here: You’ll need to take in your surroundings if you want to succeed. Learn the city grid to move around efficiently, take note of unique locations for when they come up in clues and conversations. Look for vagabond signs marking doors that lead to new opportunities, and take in the specific landmarks and street signs to learn the maze of Oakmont.
  • Mad Skills: Spot obscure details on the evidence with the help of your “Mind’s Eye”. Reimagine the events that took place on a crime scene with Retrocognition. Follow The Omens to reveal what’s unseen to an ordinary detective. Utilize Archives within City Hall, Police Station, Library and other facilities to learn the history of Oakmont, and finally – cross-reference all known facts within your Mind Palace to come to the right conclusion.
  • Investigation Difficulty: Go with the flow, focus on the story and be helped with basic hints and prompts from time to time, or truly challenge your deduction skills and prove yourself as a detective mastermind by turning off all investigation assistance.

What a classic, sorry “klassic”, game series Mortal Kombat is. As someone old enough to have played the original when it released, I have an affection for the game. My Mortal Kombat 11 review was had to write for just wanting to keep playing!

With NetherRealm and WB Games once again bringing us hard-hitting 2D fighting action, would this improve on the formula MK10 got so right?

For me, I think this is the best action in the series. One that hits a balance the series has lacked in the past. Its only flaw for all formats, PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch is really the “grind” factor. While now patched somewhat to make it less like it’s pushing you into microtransactions.

I still think it’s overly driven by money and not fun. Still, there is a lot to love about the game outside of this problem.

How Does Mortal Kombat 11 Play
Mortal Kombat 11 - Official Launch Trailer - YouTube

How much do we all love a good 2D fighter? It seemed for a long time back in the 3D graphics world of Tekken, Soul Calibur and Dead or Alive, all great titles that are still going of course. But it felt like the age of great 2D fighters was gone.

NetherRealm has had other ideas for some time. What with Injustice and Mortal Kombat raising the standards with each sequel.

In MK11 you have that classic best of 3 rounds gameplay by default set in the 2D arena.

There are the usual interactions we’ve seen in the series before where a tap of R1/RB in certain positions will let you hit your opponent in different ways. Or just quickly get out of a tight spot.

Mainly, it’s you VS the other character and you have to balance punches, kicks and throws with your special abilities to take them down. All hitting with a real sense of impact that’s relative to the attack.

Plus, the big hits sometimes get you a bone-crunching x-ray view of the impact. Ribs crack and organs burst in slow-mo. Happening at just the right frequency to feel really cool when it happens.

Fatal Blow

While there has been a number of titles in the genre all about unleashing different levels of super moves, MK11 breaks that up somewhat.

You don’t build up multiple super bars or have constant massive move sequences going on all the time. It’s much more grounded than that here.

You have two bars for defence and attack modifiers. These are in the relevant character corners. These allow a limited number of additional powers to your attacks.

For example, during my MK11 review time, I played towers with Sub Zero. He has a special ice shoulder change that can be amplified with a click of R1/RB that makes the move hit harder and longer. But I can only do this a couple of times before the bar needs to charge up by inflicting normal damage.

It’s a nice way of making special moves more than what they are.

Fatal Blow is the big move here that only unlocks when you are in your last section of health. Once you manage to land it, you can’t use it again for the duration of the fight.

While there are some balance issues that I’ll get into later, I personally think the gameplay for MK11 is a standard setter for 2D fighters right now.

Presentation And Graphics
Mortal Kombat 11 - Old Skool vs. New Skool Trailer - YouTube

With fighting games, you are always expecting something a bit impressive. There isn’t all that open-world stuff to render around you. No really big events and set-piece gameplay moments to script either.

So, when I say Mortal Kombat looks amazing you would be fair in thinking it damn well should do. What else are they doing with all that power, right?

But what I love about MK11 is the detail in the animations, sound and the beautiful yet subtle lighting.

Each character and whomever they confront give great illusion it’s a real fight. Like there is something genuine there rather than two skins on screen. Little comments and interactions and how the animations to all attacks seem so fluid and unique, it all just flows so perfectly.

Sound and lighting bring this altogether too. The crunching of impacts really do make you feel them, especially with some high-quality headphones or speakers.

Combine that with the sequences and lighting effects on some of the brutal moves, it can genuinely make you really feel some of those big Punish impacts.

Main Features

I was quite surprised that getting my MK11 review done took so much time to explore everything here. NetherRealm has put a lot into this game, even if some of it is there to drive you towards their microtransactions.

The story mode is another win, with some outlandish moments and a cool plot to keep you entertained. Suspending of disbelief is required of course, and ignoring Endgame time-travel logic!

But with a new enemy in Cronica, played very nicely by Mass Effect legend Jennifer Hale it all plays out really well. With everything going very dark the timeline is manipulated and the 90s original MK characters mix with their new counterparts.

It provides some really cool moments and one or two sad ones too as things don’t work out for all characters here. The end though is worth the journey and leaves the series in a good place for new ideas going forward.

Tedious Towers

Yes, the towers! They are back and I really do enjoy me a good tower to climb and challenge to take on. What I also like is where NetherRealm has really put some effort into making the characters really deep and customisable.

This includes gear that you can equip and make you better at certain attacks or defence. Plus, cosmetic changes that do nothing but make you look cool. All good.

The problem the game suffers from is making it feel like it’s going to take so long to achieve you may as well pay for them. Which I get in modern gaming is always a balancing act between the pay and the grind. It’s just in this case it was leaning wayyy too close to the pay side of things.

Thankfully it’s better from patching but it’s still some work to get all the stuff you can do out of the game. Although, I do quite like The Crypt mode that sees you solve puzzles and explore to find chests that drop random items.

Add to that an excellent multiplayer experience it’s all full of things to do and lots of characters to enjoy.

Some do feel somewhat overpowered but again I think there is some patching going on to get the balance right. You will have your favourites though and you’ll hopefully not see them nerfed!

Should You Play Mortal Kombat 11? Our 2nd highest award. Legendary games would traditionally score around 9/10. see more on our review system created by gamers here.

I had a blast doing this MK11 review, a game I really enjoyed. Yes, there are some issues with the game being on the grinding side and I do hope work on these continue with patches incoming all the time.

But with an epic story, with choices and different options to make you go back for more. Loads of towers and great online play. Plus, really deep character customisations and options. Mortal Kombat 11 packs quite the punch in terms of content.

Gameplay wise, it hits you right where it hurts every fight! You really feel it, and the game sets a really top gameplay standard for 2D fighters right now for me.

Gamers how would suit this game

The game is very much an 18/Mature so it is only for people who don’t mind some rather gory scenes. Bloodthirsty gamers out there be really happy, because this is for you.

And anyone who loves a good 2D fighter either to play solo, local multiplayer or heading online.

Things are about to go CRAZY as Bethesda, id Software and Avalanche Studios combine. With RAGE 2 out today on PS4, Xbox One and PC, here’s a breakdown of what to expect.

With some mad open-world gameplay, a single player story to follow and multiplayer to enjoy. It clearly looks like RAGE 2 has something for everyone.

While RAGE 2 looks fun, there aren’t all positives in the reviews so far. But, for fans of all-action first person shooters it could well be worth picking up. Here’s what to expect in RAGE 2 and some review round-up too.

For more on upcoming games, go to our 2019 games hub here.

RAGE 2 Launch Day Info
What is RAGE 2? Official Trailer - YouTube

We know the formula on this one, but we love it! RAGE 2 takes you into a first-person open world. One that mixes the intense combat and mad action you will see in id Software titles like Doom.

But combines the free flowing worlds of Avalanche studios like the ever crazy Just Cause games.

That sounds like the best kind of madness to me.

From the get-go you can expect a game that really focuses on combat, over the top action and freedom in the world. If you are looking for that it seems like RAGE 2 largely delivers what you are after.

At the cost of this is the story and the missions it seems from the reception so far. While we are waiting to complete the retail version, the early reviews show it could have had more imagination here.

Action is the key driver in this one, and it’s fun above depth. Check out the official RAGE 2 features and details below to find out if it’s for you or not.

Official Description

Dive headfirst into a dystopian world devoid of society, law, and order. RAGE 2 brings together two studio powerhouses:

Avalanche Studios, masters of open world insanity, and id Software, creators of the first-person shooter.

They deliver a carnival of carnage where you can go anywhere, shoot anything, and explode everything.

Story

An asteroid has annihilated 80% of the earth’s population, and humanity’s numbers are dwindling. Ruthless and bloodthirsty gangs roam the open roads and the tyrannical Authority seek to rule with an iron fist.

As Walker, the last Ranger of the wasteland and a threat to their power, you have been robbed of your home and left for dead. Now you’ll have to rage for justice and freedom.

With ludicrous vehicle combat, super-powered first-person mayhem, and an open world full of emergent madness. You will tear across an unforgiving wasteland battling sadistic gangs to find the tools and tech needed to crush the oppressive rule of The Authority once and for all.

Features
RAGE 2 - Open World Trailer - YouTube
  • WELCOME TO THE SHOOTERVERSE:id Software’s shooter pedigree and Avalanche Studios’ open world prowess is dream-team-made-real for RAGE 2. It’s more than a shooter, more than an open world game – it’s a shooterverse.
  • THE WASTELAND AWAITS: Seamlessly traverse a vast and varied landscape, from lush jungles and treacherous swamps to sun-scorched deserts in your pursuit of The Authority. The wasteland is massive, and you’ve got the arsenal to fight for every inch.
  • PEDAL TO THE METAL: From monster trucks to gyrocopters, use an assortment of rugged and wasteland-ready vehicles to speed across the badlands. If you see it, you can drive it.
  • THE LAST RANGER: Bring the pain using a collection of upgradable weapons, devastating Nanotrite powers, and Overdrive, the ability to push your guns beyond their mechanical limits.
  • FACTIONS & FOES: Fight against ferocious factions for control of the wasteland, each featuring a rogue’s gallery of madmen, mutants, and monsters hungry for blood.
Review Round-Up
RAGE 2 – Official Launch Trailer - YouTube

IGN – 8/10 – Dan Stapleton states that the combat is outstanding the world is full of action and cool upgrades. The world itself doesn’t feel alive and there are issues with missions feeling repetitive.

Gamespot – 6/10 – Michael Higham loves the abilities and combat but is not a fan of the story being over so quickly and uninspired missions in the world nor the characters within.

Game Informer – 7/10 – Daniel Tack is again a fan of the combat and action but finds the world itself rather dull and uninspired to revisit for the extra content once the story is done.

Destructoid – 8/10 – Chris Carter praises how fun the game is to play even in slower parts of the game. He also enjoys the use of slow-mo effect but, again, not a big fan of the story.

Our Take on RAGE 2

While it’s a shame to see the game not quite hitting the scoring heights due to some poor delivery. Following on from other games with poor missions like Anthem, it’s really strange how development teams don’t think through the mission structure more.

Especially in a market now where there are so many open-world style games.

But, the big point of RAGE 2 appears to have been delivered in the fast-paced combat, over the top abilities and fun factor. Shooter fans will be happy.

Personally, as a story driven gamer it’s a little disappointing to see a game driven by personalities on the promotion and images, doesn’t appear to have them. We don’t need an amazing plot or anything here, but some memorable characters would make up for that.

Currently I’m not personally put off, but if you are not a massive shooter fan it might be worth waiting for a price drop. If you are though, and fancy blowing things up for 12-15 hours (average playtime so far) then it looks a lot of fun.

Check out our full review soon once it’s completed and patched properly.

Observation – Story Reveal
Observation - Story Trailer | PS4 - YouTube

This was a stand out for me in this show, a really interesing and creepy Sci-Fi title. One that sees you control S.A.M. an AI in a Space Station where things are not going well. Tony Stark may be thankful to be adrift compared to the people here! More info is below:

Observation is a sci-fi thriller uncovering what happened to Dr. Emma Fisher, and the crew of her mission, through the lens of the station’s artificial intelligence S.A.M.

Players assume the role of S.A.M. by operating the station’s control systems, cameras, and tools to assist Emma in discovering what is happening to the station, the vanished crew, and S.A.M. himself.

Five Nights of Freddy’s VR – Reveal
Five Nights At Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted | PS VR - YouTube

One for you horror and Freddy’s fans as we go back to the classic games with a bit of a twist. There are plenty of classic moments to enjoy from a fully immersive perspective plus new content too. Details here

Five Nights at Freddy’s VR: Help Wanted is a collection of VR experiences based on the original Five Nights at Freddy’s games, but it includes several new experiences as well.

Unlike the PC or tablet, players will use either DualShock 4 or PS Move motion controllers to interact with the door and light controls in the offices, pick up objects in the repair games, press buttons on the video switcher, solve puzzles, and activate your flashlight.

There are also new features. For the first time in a Freddy’s game you can earn collectibles that you can play with at the prize counter. Find plushies, bobbleheads, action figures and more!

Concrete Genie – Story And Release Window
Concrete Genie - Story Trailer | PS4 - YouTube

Gotta be honest, I’m already a big fan of this game. Concrete Genie has that something a bit different about it and I’m ready to see this in action now. The story and events of the game are in a bit more detail in this new trailer, plus we know the game arrives in Autumn/Fall this year.

What the game is about:

Concrete Genie is a game about a bullied teenager named Ash, who escapes his troubles by painting spectacular living landscapes and mischievous creatures throughout his abandoned hometown of Denska.

As he masters this magical paint, he discovers it can purify Denska’s polluted walls. Can Ash overcome the bullies and paint his hometown back to life?

Days Gone – Story Trailer
Days Gone – Story Trailer | PS4 - YouTube

No surprises to see Days Gone make an appearance here with the game a month away. We see Deacon St. John facing the world that comes for you some more in the story trailer.

We have also seen some of the more hard hitting freakers and given more of an idea of the plot of the game. Plus how polished the gameplay is looking now.

While I still don’t think this will be as stand out as the last few PlayStation 1st party games. It does look the game will come out pretty solid when it arrives. More on Days Gone to come on MGL soon.

Mortal Kombat 11 – Old Skool VS New Skool
Mortal Kombat 11 - Old Skool vs. New Skool Trailer - YouTube

Now, I am all for this! We are not only getting a new Mortal Kombat, but we are getting an old one too! Old school at least as the new school versions of the characters will be clashing with their 90s versions.

This is all kinds of perfect for gamers like me who grew up with the original games. But also should just make for something a bit different when it comes to the story elements. Info so far:

Timelines will clash. Kombatants will meet their past selves. Nothing can prepare you for Mortal Kombat 11!

Thoughts on the first PS State of Play

To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect of the show so I wouldn’t say I had too many expectations. I can see how if you went in expecting a tonne of big E3 style reveals you wouldn’t be too impressed.

This was a more casual update than a full and serious big game reveal show which has its place for sure. The format was good and certainly followed the example set from clearly inspirational Nintendo Direct.

The focus on VR was a big high for me, perhaps for most that don’t have it too. But, that said there are a lot of VR games coming so they do need a platform. Perhaps so many in a small space of time was a bit much though.

One thing the show lacked for me was one really big impact title. Concrete Genie is cool as is MK11 and Observation. But we know about these already. Iron Man is interesting but, again, VR based rather than just being like Spider-Man by Insomniac.

There was enough here to make a decent show, the format is certainly a win. Content wise, perhaps it could have had more impact but more to come I’m sure.

What did you think? Get in the comments and let me know.
