Do you ever feel like every time you blink, your kids grow an inch? My boys—Iby, 10, and Fadio, 7—have already outgrown the pants and shorts I bought for them at the beginning of the school year. With our vacation coming up, along with lots of family excursions to the museum, beach and amusement parks, I thought it was time to head to Marshalls to pick up a few trendy pieces for the boys that would mix and match well with their wardrobe staples. The goal was to create cute and comfortable looks that would work for all the summer adventures ahead of us. While I don’t believe in spending a fortune on kids’ clothing (they grow up so fast!), I do love to freshen up their looks every season. Marshalls is one of the best places to do that because it has new inventory every week and you can shop on a budget.
Over the years, I have watched them develop their own styles. There is nothing more satisfying than seeing my kids pick out their clothes every morning and making them work. Iby has a relaxed style. He loves graphic tees, sweatpants, jogger shorts, hoodies, and sneakers. Fadio’s look is a bit on the preppy side, just like his dad. Most days you’ll find him rocking a dress shirt layered over a cool graphic tee, a pair of jeans and a fedora. I must admit that sometimes their outfit choices are questionable, but I don’t think it’s a big deal, as long as they are comfortable.
After a quick inventory of their closets—I took out everything that no longer fit, or had holes or stains—we headed to Marshalls, one of my favourite one-stop shops.
How I get my kids excited for summer shopping
Getting the boys’ attention for a full day of shopping at the mall requires a lot of work. Let’s not forget that they are young boys, and shopping may not always be their thing. But when we hit Marshalls, their attitudes are a little different, because they know that once we’re done picking everything, we’re heading back home. With the promise of extra game-play time and ice cream, they run to the car faster than Usain Bolt. As for myself, I thoroughly enjoy shopping for my boys—whoever says shopping for girls is more fun definitely needs to go to Marshalls. Not only does it have a wide selection of cute kids’ clothes and accessories, but the prices are unbeatable.
Once we got to the store, I tasked the boys with finding a couple of summer outfits they could see themselves wearing. I helped them a bit by giving some guidelines and getting them to think of items that would work in the summer, like shorts, bright colors and palm tree prints.
The results were well beyond what I expected! Both boys made good choices, stayed within the budget of $75 each and got pieces they loved. Both boys chose to go with motto-style jogger shorts. I was surprised, to say the least, because they usually do not go for the same types of clothing. The motto joggers they picked are super trendy and comfortable. Iby’s designer joggers were $30; his printed tee, $13; hat, $9, and shoes, $20. Fadio made an even better deal. His joggers were $15; the brightly colored button-down shirt went for $10 and the shoes for $30—for a grand total of $55!
All of a sudden, our shopping trip wasn’t a chorus of “when are we leaving?” asked in different whiny voices, but rather a mini adventure, where they got to think about their style and use Marshalls to realize their respective visions. It turned out to be a much more enjoyable time at the store and, more importantly, I got to teach the kids some basic planning skills. Come on summer, we’re ready for you!
How do you get your kids excited for summer shopping?

I am currently sitting and facing the window of my office looking at an ice storm like we are not officially in Spring. On this side of the world, it seems as though mother nature has forgotten about us. While others in New York are enjoying days in T-shirt, we are getting ready to break the ice from the driveway. Since I been stocked home since Friday I have decided to put together a list of my favorite plus size maxi dresses of the season.
Plus Size Maxi Dresses For Spring
I love me a beautiful and long maxi dress. I’ve recently purchased this one from Asos and even did a try on on my facebook page. Many of you have expressed on my facebook page that it was hard to find long plus size maxi dresses. I agree with y’all, a stylish plus size maxi dress long enough to cover these long legs of mine is hard to come by. The cute and long ones never come in our sizes.
Do you want to know what my kids’ favorite thing is during the weekend? Waking up to a yummy breakfast instead of the usual cereals they get during the week. In this case, they helped me put the final touches to these crepes hence the all over the place drippings.
I have a lot of gadgets in my kitchen. I will be lying if I say that I use them all because I do not. I do love the ones I go back to over and over again. Before getting the Vitamix E310 a few weeks ago, I used a blender from Cuisinart that was given to me as a wedding gift 12 years ago. I know what you must be thinking, who keeps a gadget for that long. Well! I did and used it until I got my hands on the Vitamix E310 Explorian. That’s when I realized that I have been using a very outdated machine. What used to take me 5 minutes to make only takes 30 seconds now. Say what?
I promise I am not exaggerating. I was introduced to the Vitamix E310 Explorian Series Blender during the official Canadian launch last February. The moment I saw chef Craig Wong from Patois Toronto blend his famous jerk chicken mix I knew I needed this machine in my life.
What to expect from the Vitamix E310 Explorian Blender?
This new Explorian Series Blender retails for about $419. It’s perfect for a medium sized family as the container can hold up to 48 ounces. It comes with a stick, a recipe book, and the instruction manual. You can use it to make a wide range of recipes including but not limited to bread, smoothies, baby food, soup, sauces and crepes batter. I love the fact that it has variable speed and pulse options which is amazing because now I can even crush nuts. My friend owns the 5200 and the difference between two isn’t that noticeable expect this one is much more affordable and easy to store. With the help of the blender stick to mix my fruit, I make the perfect smoothie blend every single time. Now let’s talk about how to make these yummy crêpes your kids will love.
Before getting this blender, I used to blend my crêpes batter the old-fashioned way with a whisk. Yes, it’s easier to use a blender but if you do not own one you can still make them. Making crêpes at home might sound daunting, but with practice and the right tools, you’ll be a pro in no time. This is recipe is meant for sweet fillings only, however, If you were to go ahead and use the crêpes for savory fillings avoid adding sugar and add a pinch of salt instead. You will need
2 cups of flour
2 Tbsp of sugar
1 1/4 cups of whole milk
1 cup of water
1 1/2 Tbsp of melted unsalted butter or canola oil
2 tsp of vanilla extract
Add all the ingredients to Vitamix E310 Explorian Blender and blend until smooth. Then, pour the batter into a large bowl. Feel free to use it immediately or for better results refrigerate for an hour or more.
To cook them, lightly grease a non-stick pan. Pour in about 1/4 of a cup under medium heat. Quickly swirl the pan to make sure the batter covers the entire pan. Cook both sides until brown and you are done. Stuff them with whatever sweet stuffing you like and enjoy!
I was sent this product for free. It was my choice to review it. I did because I love it so much. All opinions are 100% my own.
That’s it. Spring is finally here. Ok maybe not quite yet, but we can finally start to introduce fun colors into
our wardrobe. I will always and forever be a colorful girl. Today, I wanted to address a comment that I get quite often under my social media posts and that is how do I mix and match colors so effortlessly.
Before we get into the subject, let’s talk about my outfit. Can you believe I got this entire outfit expect the shoes and bag from eBay? I am sure you would if you are also an avid eBay shopper like myself. Before there were tons of options for plus size, eBay was the place to check out. It still is, but even better.
Contrary to popular belief 81% of all merchandise sold on eBay is new and available with the “Buy It Now” option (no bidding necessary). The site makes it super easy to find the items I am looking for since they have a curvy/plus size page. From there you can choose what kind of pieces you’re interested in. It’s like a gold mine, the more you dig, the more you find.My blazer is from Forever 21 while the pants are from Asos. Here are some of my fave items currently on sale.
How to Mix and Match Colors Like a Pro
Pairing colors can either make or break your outfit. I’ve mentioned in the past that the easiest way for me to get dressed was by color. As long I have a primary color in mind the rest is easy. Believe it or not, you can
wear more colors together than you think. Without further ado here are three ways to mix and match colors
You can never ever go wrong with a monochromatic look. It’s easy to the eyes and very easy to achieve.Start with a single piece and match it with something else either a few shades darker or lighter. I like to also mix up fabrics and textures in the same color family.
Color blocking consist of pairing 2 or more bold colors to make an outfit. The outfit in today’s post definitely falls in the color blocking category. The best way to achieve such look is to use colors opposite to one or another or next to each other on the color wheel. Most times, I just go for whatever that feels right to me.
Mix colors and neutrals
Neutrals can be matched with any color you want. If monochromatic and color blocking are not for you, simply wear one color in your outfit, and keep the rest neutral (black, white, grey, animal print). The best combos I can think of are
With a little effort everyone can put a colorful outfit together effortlessly. I hope this post helps. Be sure to check out eBay for many styles that are perfect for Spring. New styles are added every day !
This post is sponsored by eBay all opinions are 100% my own.
I’ve finally decided to write an extensive post about plus size rompers and jumpsuits.. I know they are not everyone’s cup of tea because they can be quite intimidating. Today, I would like to address the two main questions I get from you guys. The first is “where to buy plus size rompers and jumpsuits?”. The second is “how to find the right one for your shape and size?” I am actually shocked that I never addressed those questions in any of my previous posts. Well ! It’s never too late.
How to find the right Jumpsuit for your shape and size.
If you are looking for trendy plus size jumpsuits for a tall and plus size woman you might have to do a little digging. A good one that fits all the requirements is hard to come by. It’s easy to find my size but not so easy to find one that is the right length. I also feel the pain of short plus size women. Many of my friends always complain about not finding one that is short enough. Hopefully, the options below will solve that problem.
If you do not own a jumpsuit as of yet, I would recommend you try one in store first. That would help you determine your size. There are three things I look for in my jumpsuits
The fit from waist to crotch: I do not want the crotch to be too saggy or too tight. Always make sure it nips in at the smallest part of your body like I am wearing the photos in this post. I did not follow these rules when I wore this outfit because I was going for the oversized look.
The fabric: Stretchy material is a must. For a more elegant look just a tiny bit of stretch is enough.
The inseam: Knowing your measurements is a must when you shop online. Grab your best fitting pants that are similar to the bottom of the jumpsuit you’re buying and measure from the crotch to the hem. Depending on the kind of jumpsuit, you could size up just to get a little wiggle room and some length.
I purchased this jumpsuit a few weeks ago and just couldn’t wait to wear it. Even though it has an open back ( which is a little out of my comfort zone), the length was perfect. Since we’re in that in-between phases where we want to wear all the warm weather things, but mother nature is not cooperating, I layered it with a black turtleneck. That’s just one of the many ways you can style it before it’s time to bare arms. You could layer it with a plus size cropped sweater like this one or this one. You could also wear a white tee under it them finish the look with a cozy cardigan.
Trendy Plus Size Rompers and Jumpsuits
In my opinion, every girl should own at least one romper or jumpsuit but only if you are comfortable in it. I own many of them, and each them is for a different occasion. So without further ado, please find some of my favorite trendy plus size rompers and jumpsuits

“Hi, My name is Assa Cisse, a Toronto based lifestyle influencer. My blog, My Curves & Curls aims to inspire and educate women and girls around the world about loving their bodies.” These are the two sentences I use to introduce my blog to brands and other influencers. If someone had told me 20 years ago that I would own a blog that aimed at educating women and girls about self-esteem and confidence, I would have called them crazy. It never even crossed my mind. Why? Because I had low self-esteem growing up, which affected every part of my life. I can share with you hundreds of instances where my low self-esteem held me back from getting ahead. Even though things are much better now, there are still days where everything goes left.
Dove Self-Esteem Project
When Dove asked me to take part in their Self-Esteem Project this year with a girl in my life, I knew this was a campaign I had to be part of. The Dove Self-Esteem Project aims to help change how girls see and feel about themselves. Our self-esteem is tested daily as we navigate our way through social media. We are consistently bombarded with images of perfect bodies, beauty, and hair. It’s crucial now more than ever to teach young women about self-love. Since its creation more than a decade ago, The Dove Self-Esteem Project has helped support mentors, teachers and parents in ensuring the next generation of women grow up with confidence.
To help shift the script on positive self-image, Dove sent me the Workshop-in-a-box #HourwithHer toolkit. Leading experts believe that one hour talking to a girl about beauty, confidence, and self-esteem can change the way she sees herself for a lifetime. The kit provides educational tools (worksheets, questions, and topics) required to approach difficult conversations.
I was super excited to spend the hour with my niece to facilitate these discussions. She was shy at first but started to open up when I shared with her my self-esteem issues and how I am working to overcome them. To kick things off, I asked her to write about an experience that impacted the way she feels about herself. I know how hard it is for young girls these days because we live in a society that values and strives for perfection.
In the booklet, she mentioned that she struggled a lot with skin (acne) issues and felt like people always stare and make comments. It’s got to a point she refuses to attend a lot of social events at school. This is a reminder that we all play a role in deteriorating our friends’ confidence by making mean comments about their appearance. Her story reminded me of the time in high school when I refused to attend my sports classes because everyone made fun of the fact that I was to fat to run and jump.
“She is kind, honest, smart, loveable, powerful and the list goes on…..”
With the Dove Self-Esteem Projects prompts, we talked about different scenarios where she felt uncomfortable. Then, we flipped the script and wrote and spoke about how she could turn similar situations in the future into something positive. I reaffirmed to her that practicing positive affirmation is the best way to help build self-esteem. Her beauty and appearance are not the only things that define her. She is kind, honest, smart, loveable, powerful and the list goes on. Again, positive reaffirmation.
We’ve also touched on other healthy steps I like to use to improve my self-esteem. Those include but not limited to
Stop comparing myself to others
Surround myself with positive friends and family
Learn from my mistakes
Live life unapologetically
Accept my imperfections
Use my voice to build others.
Embrace the things that make me unique.
Cut down on social media when I can (even though being on social media is part of my job.
By the end our workshop my niece was undoubtedly not the only person that was left empowered. I was reminded that embracing your inner and outer beauty, lifting others up are the best ways to live life.
Whether you’re bursting with confidence or feeling a little unsure about yourself, the Dove Self-Esteem kit is a great way to start your year or day on a positive note. I invite you to visit Dove.ca and access free at-home workshop materials to practice with friends, family or by yourself. It only takes one hour to change a girl’s life.
These past few weeks got me feeling like Spring. Mother Nature teased us just a bit and then we are now back in winter. I am already done with spring cleaning my closet but have done little shopping to fill the gap. To be honest, I have been busy roaming around decor and furniture stores because we are ready to decorate our living room. I cannot wait to tell you all about it in future posts as this post is all about the latest plus size Spring pieces you need in your closet.
Below you’ll find some spring essentials, affordable and trendy pieces. I have been eyeing this sleeveless Longline Trench Coat for a while, never got it because I thought they did not ship to Canada. Well! come to find out they do so it’s currently in my cart. Another one that is an absolute must-have in my book this spring is this beautiful orange suit. A good colorful plus size suit is hard to come by, so grab it before it’s gone.

This post is all about the side of blogging you do not see.Well, that is not necessarily true because if you follow me on Instagram Stories, you might have seen a snippet of these events and even some of the pr packages I have received over January and February. This is my chance to share unbiased and honest reviews of the products that I’m gifted by Pr companies on behalf of brands.Nothing in this post is sponsored in any shape or form. I do have a whole lot of things to share. However, It’s best if I keep these posts to a minimum of 2 to 3 products. Please note that I will also review some of the them individually, so keep an eye out.
January and February 2018 have been a little slow but still exciting. I went to a few events and came home with a few exciting products. Let’s get started!
Olay Whip Face Moisturizer launch
Last January, Olay launched their much anticipated new moisturizer; Olay Whip. A lot of women love moisturizers that produce great results but cannot deal with the heaviness certain moisturizers. Olay came up with a product that claims to be super light, provide a smooth matte finish and retails for $39.99. After the event, which by the way was off the chain we were all gifted with our own Olay Whip. I came home with the Regenerist Whip ( with & without SPF ), but the product is also available inTotal Effects Whip and Luminous.
As I am writing this post, I’ve used my Olay Whips for only two weeks. When I first tried it, I was drawn to it because of its texture. It went on smoothly and instantly absorbed into my skin with a matte finish. That made it the perfect moisturizer for me to wear under my make up since my skin is oily. As I get older, moisturizers that help fight wrinkles have become very important. The Olay Regenerist Whip Face Moisturizer also features an anti-wrinkle formula. So far I am loving it and would recommend it to anyone looking for firmness and smoothness. Please keep it away from your eyes; I learned that the hard way. I am hoping to give you an update in a month time.
Rosa Faia lingerie
The next products I loved this month are the Rosa Faia undergarments. I had the pleasure of visiting their showroom in Toronto a few weeks ago. Anita is a brand I had never worn or even heard off. However, I assumed if I was invited to come, they must have something to offer to plus size women. I went in with an open mind and left impressed by their offering, quality and size range (A to J cup).
After my fitting and learning some fun facts about the brand, I came home with a few bras set I fell in love with. Let me make something clear before we continue, all the bras mentioned below are investment bras. They are not cheap but will last you years based on the quality.
As a 30-plus years old woman, an undergarment that is functional, comfortable and gives a beautiful silhouette are vital to me. The Rosa Faia Fleur and Selma Underwire Bras offer all that and some. These underwire bras are both beautifully designed giving you a flawless and feminine look.
Selma is a gorgeous lace bra with the most beautiful straps. Fleur is equally beautiful but a lot more old school. You’re going to get lots of support because of the thick bands and wide straps. The wires sit perfectly around my breast tissue. Two bras with cups that hold my breast in place with no gaping or overspill are winners.
After blogging for many years, the question about where to buy affordable plus size clothing in Canada still pops up on my feed now and then. To be honest, this question is a little hard to answer because what might be affordable to me might not be for you.We can least agree that a piece of clothing under $50 is affordable to most. If you’re a long time reader, you already know most of the items I wear on this blog are accessible to everyone.
A place I always find affordable plus size clothing is Forever 21. Granted many of their items do not fit within with my current style, but from time to time, I find a few pieces I love.
This Gingham puff sleeves bodysuit is actually a knockoff and the plus version of this Johanna Ortiz bodysuit ( retails for $995). I wish you could have seen my excitement when I scored it for less than $60. The top has some stretch to it. I would recommend sizing up if you have a big bust. I paired it with this plus size white denim I bought years ago from Addition Elle. It was purchased for a little fortune but worth every penny. The fit and the length are perfect.
Top: Forever 21 Here , In black Here similar Here | Jeans: Addition elle (sold out) similar Here | Earrings: Express| Shoes: Just fab ( sold out) similar Here | Lipstick : Mac Ruby Woo | Watch: Reitmans |
Now let’s get back to why you are here. Below is a list of my top places to buy affordable plus size clothing in Canada. By all means, if you have any other stores you’ll like me to add to this list, please leave it in the comments.
I love shopping at Old Navy. I once bought a pair of Jeans for only $1.94. Never leave the store without checking the clearance section. When customers return online exclusive items to the store, they are put on sale for half the price (5o% off). Since their plus size selection is only sold online, the chances of you finding affordable plus size dresses, jeans and activewear are pretty high.Online Shopping available
Just like I previously mentioned, I cannot make a list of plus size affordable clothing without including Forever 21. The sizes are junior plus, so keep that in mind when you try on the clothes. The’ve recently started adding other brands to their online selection. Online Shopping available
There are only three things you need to know about Reitmans. You pay the same as everyone; it’s the perfect place to find work clothes and the prices are affordable. Regular shoppers always get coupons. Online Shopping available
Nothing I love more than going thrifting on weekends. A few years ago, I bought the most amazing jackets in my closet from thrift shops. The funny thing is that is cost me more to clean them. Thrifting is not everyone’s cup of tea but I promise you if you give it a chance, you’ll thank me later. Online Shopping NOT available
I have love/ hate relationship with H&M. First, the selection is very minimal, second; they now moved everything online. With that being said If you are looking for affordable basic and casual items you can check them out. Online Shopping available.
Your Big Sister’s closet is one of the best plus size boutiques in Toronto. Their clothes are super trendy and affordable. Karen and Peter are both plus size and they know what plus size women want. Check out my post about them a few years ago. Online Shopping available.
Imagine booking a vacation and your entire family ends up getting sick just a few days before your trip. That’s exactly what happened to us last December. I had our hotel booked in Quebec City, suitcases almost packed and boom; one of my little munchkin comes home with a stomach bug. To make matters worse my husband also came home from a business trip with a nasty cold. The kind that made him stay in bed for days. If I am honest that was a blessing in disguise because he needed to slow down a bit. Besides, I am sure he enjoyed being taken care of for a few days.
Historically when one of my family members gets sick especially with a cold, I end up getting it too since I am the caretaker. Something had to change because the last thing I wanted was to end the year under a blanket with a box of tissue. I had to find a way to kick that cold to the curb before it could get started. Yes friends, making it to Quebec City was that important to me. Although there is no sure way to avoid catching a cold or the flu, there are a few things I did this time around to lower my chances.
Clean the house/Wash your hands
From the moment I found out that my husband had a cold, I went into cleaning mode. The doorknobs, remote controls, basically everything that tends to be passed around from hands to hands. Germs are less likely to go around when everything is disinfected. With that, I still wash my hands, use hand sanitizers and instruct everyone to do so. I must say it’s easier said than done especially when you have two active boys.
Take Vitamins to boost your immune system
Let me introduce you first to the Jamieson Vitamin C Chewable. These tasty tangy flavored chewable tablets are a wonderful immune booster. They contain no artificial sweeteners, colors or flavor. I take at least 4 a day whether I feel like I am coming down with something or not.
The second supplement is my Jamieson Vitamin D. This vitamin is important especially during the cold winter months. Our bodies are not exposed to the sun as much as in the summer months. Having the right amount of Vitamin D helps improve immune health.
After taking care of the husband for a few days, my throat was getting a bit itchy. I just knew I was one sneeze away from a full-blown cold. The Jamieson Cold Fighter, which contains four natural ingredients (Echinacea, Zinc, Vitamin C and Ginger), came in very handy. I took a pill a day until I felt like I was back to normal. It got rid of my sore throat and congestion. One thing I really love about this product is the fact I did not have to worry about being drowsy during the day. As a mother the last thing you want is worrying about not being able to take care of your daily duties because of a medicine. Yes, friends one chewable tablet or one soft gel once a day is all you to kick that cold to the curb. After my experience, I think the Cold Fighter is great product to add to your at home cold and flu emergency kit.
Rest and Sleep
Last but not least I slept and slept some more. There was no binge watching, no late-night phone calls with my sisters either. Even though it was the holiday season I tried to get that nap anytime I could. As working adults, the last thing we think about is sleep. Believe me it makes a whole lot of difference when you get a good night sleep, my kids can attest to that.
I would love to know how what preventive measures you take to prevent getting sick with a cold.
