An infection is a pretty standard thing. I for one am prone to getting sinus infections a few times a year. They suck, but it isn’t something I particularly worry about if I find out I have one. I just go to the doctor, he/she prescribes me an antibiotic if necessary, and I call it a day. But that was before I heard of something called sepsis.

Did you know…

That each year in the U.S., more than 1.5 million people develop sepsis, and at least 250,000 Americans die as a result?

And the craziest part about sepsis is that is all starts with an infection. That is why I thought it was important to promote the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Get Ahead of Sepsis initiative to inform readers of the importance of early recognition and timely treatment of sepsis, as well as the importance of preventing infections that could lead to sepsis.

But before we can get into all the steps in preventing infections that could lead to sepsis, let’s first talk through what sepsis is precisely.

What is Sepsis?

Only 55% of Americans have heard of sepsis. And I was not one of those people! I had never even heard of this condition. So I found it surprising when I discovered that CDC recently launched a new initiative called Get Ahead of Sepsis. I had to know what it is. I did a little research.

Sepsis is the body’s extreme response to an infection. It is life-threatening, and without timely treatment, sepsis can rapidly cause tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Sepsis happens when an infection you already have—in your skin, lungs, urinary tract or somewhere else—triggers a chain reaction throughout your body.

The scariest part about sepsis is that a delayed recognition and treatment increase a patient’s risk of death.

The reality is that anyone can get an infection, and almost any infection can lead to sepsis.

But there’s good news too.

Despite this disheartening news, there is good news. Timely recognition and treatment of sepsis saves lives. The issue is that most people do not know how to spot the signs and symptoms. Let’s go over the signs and symptoms on our journey of preventing infections that could lead to sepsis.

What are the Signs and Symptoms of Sepsis?

The truth is there are many signs and symptoms that could be an indicator of sepsis. One of the most significant warning signs and symptoms is if you or a loved one has an infection that is not getting better or is getting worse. Signs and symptoms can include one or a combination of the following:

  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Shortness of breath
  • High heart rate
  • Fever, or shivering, or feeling very cold
  • Extreme pain or discomfort
  • Clammy or sweaty skin

A few people to keep in mind who may be at a higher risk include:

  • Adults 65 or older
  • People with chronic conditions, such as diabetes, lung disease, cancer, and kidney disease
  • People with weakened immune systems
  • Children younger than one

If you notice that you or a loved one is experiencing sepsis signs and symptoms or if you suspect sepsis, it is essential to get immediate medical care. Ask your doctor or nurse, “Could this infection be leading to sepsis?” While being able to see the signs and symptoms are kinda important, let’s talk in more detail about overall prevention of infections in general.

What are the steps to preventing infections that could lead to sepsis?

If this all sounds a little scary, you are probably wondering how you can prevent sepsis from happening in the first place. And the answer is to prevent the infections that can lead to sepsis. There are a few things you could do.

  1. Practice good hygiene, such as handwashing, and keeping cuts clean and covered until healed. This has to be one of the simplest things you can do. If you accidentally hurt yourself, it is so important to keep your wounds or cuts clean.
  2. Talk to your doctor or nurse about steps you can take to prevent infections. Some steps include taking good care of chronic conditions and getting recommended vaccines.
  3. Know the signs and symptoms of sepsis. Ahem, see the “What are the signs and symptoms of sepsis” subheader.
  4. ACT FAST. Get medical care IMMEDIATELY if you suspect sepsis or have an infection that’s not getting better or is getting worse.

I hope you know that the purpose of this post was not to scare you, but rather to inform you about a silent killer in America. This is something that is often preventable and treatable, yet people die from it every single day.

Sepsis is a medical emergency. If you or your loved one suspect sepsis or has an infection that’s not getting better or is getting worse, ask your doctor or nurse, “Could this infection be leading to sepsis?”

If you are like most home buyers, one of the biggest concerns you have is how much your mortgage will cost on a monthly basis. While this is an important factor to consider, you need to look beyond the monthly cost of a loan.

Extending the length of a mortgage is something lenders do to make the monthly payments lower. This may save you money right now, but it will cost you more in the long run.

The longer you have a mortgage, the more you will ultimately pay the lender in question. If at all possible, you need to get a shorter mortgage so you can pay your home off quicker and reduce the amount of interest you pay.

3. Avoid Financing Closing Costs

From time to time, lenders will try to convince home buyers to include closing costs in their mortgage loan. Closing costs can be a bit intimidating, especially if you are on a tight budget.

Instead of financing these costs and increasing your loan amount, you need to find a way to pay them. Financing the closing costs means you are paying this expense with the equity of your future home.

Due to the interest on your mortgage, you may pay double for the closing costs in the long run. You will usually have a few months’ notices before closing costs are due. Buckling down and cutting corners may not be fun, but it can help you get the money you need.

4. Longer Mortgages Can Affect Equity

Not only can choosing a longer loan to lead to you paying more for a home, but it can also cause equity to grow at a slower rate. Equity is determined by how much of the principal you have paid down on your loan.

The monthly payments made on a longer term mortgage will be mostly interest. This is why you will have to wait to do things like taking out a home equity line of credit.

Shorter term mortgages will have a higher monthly payment, but they also allow you to build equity at a much faster rate.

5. Consider the Total Cost of the Loan

Before signing off on a mortgage loan, you should definitely assess the total cost. There are numerous fees and charges on a mortgage, which can be a bit overwhelming for first-time buyers.

Paying close attention to how your monthly payment will be split between principal and interest can help you greatly. Ideally, you want to choose a home loan that allows you to put the majority of your monthly payment on the principal.

Rushing through the mortgage selection process can cause you to lose a lot of money in the coming years. The time and effort invested in the research you do will pay off. Working with a reputable and experienced lender can help you get the guidance needed during this difficult process.

There is no better song that I’ve found to motivate you at work. In fact, it was my go-to when I was feeling overwhelmed in grad school!

“Carry On,” though a bit dark at times, sends a message that you are good enough just being you. This song is ideal for you more zen ladies who like lyrics rather than a pumping beat to motivate you at work.

With inspirational lines like “No one’s ever gonna stop us now/’Cause we are /We are shining stars/We are invincible/We are who we are,” this tune by Fun. is a great pick for when you and your project team need to give a presentation. It’s also good for when you feel like you made a mistake and need motivation to get back into the game.

4. “Working For The Weekend” by Loverboy

This one’s kind of a no-brainer. This 80s classic is practically made for blaring on a Friday afternoon when you are trying to squeeze a few more hours of work from yourself. If you can just make it a little longer, you’re off to weekend fun!

“Working For The Weekend” is also the perfect tune to play when you start getting too comfortable in a job. The lines “Everyone’s watching, to see what you will do/Everyone’s looking at you” should motivate you to do your best to set an example for your coworkers and maybe even get a promotion! And every time I step up in the buildin’/Everybody hands go up,” this banger will make you feel like a star even if you’re just an intern. And who knows, singing about being the HBIC could make it come true! Play this one when you’re feeling less than confident to get an ego boost or use it to double up on self-esteem when you’re already feelin’ yourself.

6. “She Works Hard For The Money” by Donna Summer

Let’s get real for a second.

Not everyone has their dream job with a corner office and a comfortable salary. A lot of us do some less-than-ideal jobs so we can afford to pay the bills. Are you stuck in a job where you feel unappreciated? It can happen anywhere from retail to an office.

This Donna Summer classic totally gets it with lines like “She works hard for the money/So you better treat her right.” Rather than blowing up at your coworkers or boss, blast “She Works Hard For The Money” in your headphones instead and you’ll feel better in no time.

7. “Supermodel (You Better Work)” by RuPaul

This track isn’t just for the Ru Paul’s Drag Race fans out there. Though, if you’re like me, that show’s promotion of individuality and creativity is motivation to be myself. This track is fun to listen to but has an inspiring message, too.

It’s totally natural to feel unsure of yourself at work, especially when starting a new job or getting a promotion. But remember that out of tons of applicants, your employers chose you! They thought you could do the job, so you should believe in yourself, too. Still feeling like an imposter? RuPaul’s “Supermodel (You Better Work)” is fun, silly, and will give you the confidence boost you need.  Just “work/work it, girl/do your thing”!

8. “Tubthumping” by Chumbawumba

Running into a set-back on the job can make your stomach drop. From a negative performance review to losing hours of work due to a computer error, some days you feel like you want to drop everything and quit. Instead, play “Tubthumping.

With a catchy chorus of “I get knocked down, but I get up again/You are never gonna keep me down,” this inspiring 90s one-hit wonder will help you dust yourself off and ! Play this one on repeat on those days when nothing is going right. You’ll feel better in a snap!

You can’t have a motivational songs playlist without Queen Bey! In addition to its fun and feminist chorus, “Run the World (Girls)” has lots of lyrics about women making money for themselves. My favorite lyric is “I work my 9 to 5 and I cut my check/This goes out to all the women getting it in/Get on your grind.”

Listening to this song will motivate you to be the strong, independent career woman you are! When you’re in that “I don’t need no man” type mood, get this tune pumping through your headphones. This is also a great one to send to your fellow female coworkers when the guys in the office are acting like a-holes.

10. “Work” by Iggy Azalea

Feeling tired and overwhelmed with work projects? When you’re burnt out, it often seems easier to coast and do the bare minimum. Listen to “Work” and you’ll feel differently.

Iggy tells the story of how she rose to the top and how hard she had to work to get there. Lines like “You can hate it or love it/Hustle and the struggle is the only thing I’m trusting” are sure to motivate you at work to do your best so you can achieve your dreams! This song is the perfect reminder that you should always put in 110%. Even if no one notices at first, you will be rewarded in the end!

How Does Music Keep Us Motivated?

I find that what motivates me at work, in the gym, and anytime I need a boost is always fun music. But did you ever wonder why that is? According to Psychology Today, the music we listen to actually affects biologically process in our brains, leading to changes in our perception of the world.

Why does this matter?

Psychologists have discovered that if you listen to a happy song, you’ll feel in a good mood but sad music can make you feel down in the dumps. In one study, test subjects listened to either happy or sad music, then were asked to identify happy and sad emojis. Even when an icon with a neutral expression was shown, people were more likely to claim they saw an emoji with a mood that matched their music. That’s how strongly music can affect our mood!

While some aspects of music are objectively happy or sad (like minor vs. major key and fast vs. slow tempo), the tunes that improve our moods are super individual. Maybe there’s a song that’s kind of depressing but reminds you of a happy time in your life. Or perhaps a popular club banger makes you upset because it makes you think of someone you’re no longer friends with.

The playlist I’ve created has songs that make me feel more motivated at work but yours might be different! It just takes a bit of trial and error (and the occasional shake-up of songs) to create your ideal list of jams. Once you find your perfect playlist, you’ll be unstoppable at the office and everywhere!

Why Listen To Music At Work?

It’s simple . . . for fun! But there’s so much more to it than that. As I mentioned above, motivating tunes can help improve your mood so you feel happier at work. A happier worker is a more productive worker! The better you feel, the more you will want to actually accomplish things. Not to mention that blasting catchy songs can help drown out your chatty cubicle neighbor and other distractions.

Fun music can also give you a boost of energy. No need for that 5th cup of coffee! Higher productivity and a better mood mean you’ll do better at your job overall, which your boss will definitely notice. It could even lead to a promotion! I’d say that’s a good reason to play some tunes in the background while you type away.

Put on those headphones and get jamming!

From inspiring lyrics to fun melodies, at least one of these songs is going to become your signature jam. I can almost guarantee it! Whether you want a boost of bad-ass feelings from a rap track, a chill song with words you will want to put on post-its for yourself to read later, or an energizing pop tune, I’ve got you covered, girl!

Tips for Safely Traveling Solo in Costa Rica

In addition to avoiding urban areas after nightfall and keeping away from illicit activities, there are numerous things a solo female traveler can do to stay safe. Here are a few to keep in mind:

Dress Conservatively

While a female should be able to wear what she wants, when she wants, some parts of the world unfortunately disagree. While Costa Rica lacks the misogyny of some foreign countries, some areas are more conservative than others. When traveling alone, every step you can take to detract attention from yourself will help.  

Do your research about the area you’re visiting. More popular tourist areas and beaches are excellent for showing some skin, whereas you might be better off covering your shoulders and wearing a long skirt or maxi dress in some of the villages. Avoid wearing any flashy jewelry wherever you go; if a particular piece has special meaning to you, consider locking it up at home.

Have Confidence in your Route

Before you go anywhere, take the time to look at a map and familiarize yourself with the area. When you’re walking, avoid that hesitant tourist look that tends to make travelers stick out like a sore thumb. Walk briskly and match the pace of the people around you to look as though you know where you’re going and are familiar with the ebb and flow of the region.

Stay Alert and Trust Your Instincts

Make sure you’re using your senses as you travel around. Keep your ears tuned in and your eyes on the move. If you end up in a situation or area that feels wrong, get out of there. It’s better to trust your instincts than to brush them off as an overreaction. Learning some common Spanish phrases is also useful when traveling through Costa Rica.

As for your senses of taste, touch, and smell, you need those to enjoy all of the culinary delights you come across during your travels!

If All Else Fails, Ask

If you want to know more about the areas you are traveling in, ask around. A hotel concierge, waiter, taxi driver or fellow travelers are untapped fountains of knowledge. They can identify places you should avoid or experiences you might have forgotten to add to your list while planning your trip.

If you’re staying in Costa Rica to volunteer, ask veteran volunteers about their experience or workers through the agency you’re volunteering for.

Shop at a place where your dollar goes further

This part is important if your goal is to get more for less. You have to shop at a place where you get more bang for your buck. I personally enjoy thrift store shopping not only because it is so affordable, but also because it is a great way to get unique ensembles! ThredUp is one of my FAVORITE places to shop online since it’s an online thrift store! Obviously, you have the choice to go to boutiques or retail stores as well! But make sure you go with a coupon in hand or on a day where they are having a pretty good sale.

You can let your allowance build up over a few months and shop at a place that is more expensive. But I find that I can get designer clothing from thrift stores as long as I go to the right shops. It takes a little bit longer to find items in my size that I actually like. But to me, this makes the find even more special. If you’ve yet to have a thrift store experience, I highly encourage you to give it a try. Keep your eyes peeled for the best thrift stores to go to when you go on your shopping spree.

Reward yourself for cutting back in other areas

I mentioned giving yourself an allowance for your shopping which I think is a good idea. But if you want to save more to shop, I like to start looking into my Latte factors. The Latte factor is the amounts of money we spend on seemingly minuscule things over a long period of time. For example, if you spend $5 a day on coffee. Over the course of a year that turns into $1,825. We all have latte factors. For some, it’s a gym membership they never step foot into. For others it is cigarettes. And for others still, it is fast-food and eating out. Whatever your latte factor, figure out what they are and if you are willing to sacrifice one or all of them for the sake of a shopping spree. If so, take those extra funds and put it into your shopping Green Dot Bank Account.

According to a recent study by the American Psychological Association, millennials endure more stress and are less able to deal with it than any other generation. To be specific, members of our generation tend to report 5.4 average stress level out of a 10-point scale, which is significantly more than baby boomers’ 4.7 and mature age groups’ 3.7.

You know how it is. We’ve all sent or received a text or two recently that proclaims that we can’t join friends for an afternoon drink cause we’ve got “a lot on at the moment.” Or, maybe, you’ve found yourself procrastinating too much recently, spending hours on the internet, looking up yoga retreats and mindfulness lifehacks. And, perhaps, you leave the computer without having done any work or having done any actual yoga – and a whole lot more stressed.

There are plenty of contributing factors to how and why millennials are experiencing more stress. There are ambition addiction and a tight job market, not to mention choice overload or FOBO: Fear of Better Options, which is, in some ways, Fear of Missing Out taken to the nth level. Young people today are more likely to feel uneasy or anxious due to their knowledge of how things might have been or comparing their success to others’ via social media, for example. Many of us may have developed habits which feed our social and personal stress levels. It’s time to break those habits.

Netflix is not chill

After a day at work or even over the weekend, you may feel comforted by night in binge-watching the latest new series. However, studies suggest that compulsive television consumption is anything but relaxing. In fact, we are more likely to increase our level of stress or depression after watching for as little as two hours. In the short term, putting your feet up in front of the T.V. may reduce anxiety or pressure. For long-term results, keeping your brain active is the most effective. Swap binge watching for binge crafting and refocus your mind on something fulfilling and tangible.

We’ve got emails on our phones and laptops in our living rooms. Even if we’ve physically left work, we often haven’t left at all. Millennials are multitasking mavericks. We have multiple screens, devices and most likely more than one job; several social groups and the occasional hobby. In Zen Buddhism, finding simplicity and focusing is key to mindfulness. Concentrating and completing one task is far better for you than spreading yourself thinly across multiple tasks. It’ll also decrease feelings of loneliness, stress, and anxiety. This applies to all areas of our lives; spend one day spring clearing your home, rather than seeing cleaning as a constant and stressful daily battle.

We’ve all heard that exercise is a great way to combat poor mental health. And it’s true. It may seem odd, but studies show that sedentary lifestyles lead to higher levels of anxiety. In this, it’s important to understand what’s stopping us from standing up. Computers, phones, and television all require seated concentration and reduce blood flow throughout the body. Yes, you may need to sit down at work but balance this by walking home or allocating screen-free time into your schedule.

Don’t let stress rule your relationship with your work, phone or friends. For the first step in starting any new life plan, whether it’s diet, exercise or work, you first must shake off those bad habits. And stress is no different; shake the habits and refocus your attention on what you love.

It’s important to remember that comparison really can be the primary killer of happiness. Stop comparing your life to others that you see on social media and appreciate what you, yourself, have achieved. Work towards tangible results to be proud of, instead of spending your life watching TV shows on Netflix. Focusing on one task instead of spreading yourself too thin across many is also likely to save you from pulling your hair out and lead to better results too.

Ultimately, being more productive will even save you money; as we mentioned earlier in this article, splashing the cash is a form of therapy, which can lead to a downhill financial spiral – resulting in even more stress!

I am a sap when it comes to reading feminist books. They can be inspirational, sobering and validating. That is why it is so important to make sure we stay inspired to achieve our goals. From these books I feel I have learned more about myself. But I’ve also learned a lot about what feminism is, what it means to each and every one of us. Reading each of these books make me proud to call myself a feminist. And I hope my list inspires you to read the books on this list as well as other feminist books. 1. Bad Feminist by. Roxane Gay

Bad Feminist by Roxanne Gay has to be one of my favorite books of all time. It is a collection of essays where Gay shares her thoughts about a variety of things from books, rape culture, TV, and of course Feminism. If you have ever questioned yourself as being a feminist or not, this a good book to figure that out for yourself. Get the book here. 

2. My Brilliant Friend by. Elena Ferrante

I recently finished this series and found that feminsim can be as simple as loving your best friend for who she is. I read this series and realized that there were some feminst concepts in it that I’d never realized myself before. This book talks through one woman’s life as she described her friendship with her best friend from childhood. I highly recommend. Get the book here.

3. The Declaration of the Rights of Women by. Olympe de Gouges

Feminism has been around for quite some time. And this book showcases that it existed even 200 years ago. While this was written years ago, it is still so relevant today. Filled with beautiful imagery that will inspire any femimnist today, this book prves that feminism isstill very relevant today. Get the book here.

4. The Handmaid’s Tale by. Margaret Atwood

If you are a fan of distopian novels, this one is for you with a huge feminist theme. Taking place in a time where women’s rights are taken away, it defintely makes you grateful for your current rights as a woman. 5. Forgotten Women The Scientists by. Zing Tsjeng

I love this series of books by Zing Tseng. Filled with stories about many women I surprisingly have never heard of. The illustrations are beautiful and it defientely builds you up to remind you that women have made great moves in our history. In this bbok, this showcases what women have contributed to science. Get the book here.

6. We Should All Be Feminists by.Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Based on the TED talk of the same name, Chimanda Ngozi Adichie talks about the core reseaons why anyone, male or female should be feminist. 7. Men Explain Things to Me by.Rebecca Solnit

If you’ve ever been mansplained to, this feminist book will give you some validation. In it, Rebecca Solnit talks about conversations where men assume they know something and assume women do not. But it is an inllustration on how women are silenced today. A great read. Get the book here.

8. The Bell Jar by. Sylvia Plath

This is a classic feminst book where we follow a woman who is being gripped by insanity. It has been called an American classic and with a heroine in the midsts of it, it is a very complex feminit tale. Get the book here.

9. Text Me When You Get Home: The Evolution and Triumph of Modern Female Friendship by. Kayleen Schaefer

If you’ve ever said these words to a friend upon them going home, this book is for you. A story of solidarity between female friendships. I am going to be real with ya’ll. Being a boss a** b**** on the daily is a struggle. Although we are told over and over again that we contain the power within us, it is still hard to tap into that power every day. We have many outside factors that may be sapping us of our energy, whether that be school, work, relationships, or family. And it is not just the being of people but also the judgments that may come with them.

Plus, aside from the outside factors, we are often our biggest critic. The world can be very hard on an individual. It seems almost impossible to find ways to build ourselves back up. Well, it is not! There are so many ways that we can look for the power within us daily. So here are 5 easy ways that you can empower yourself daily so that you can become the boss a** b**** that you are.

1. Quote Wall/Power Poses


Keeping a quote wall is such a powerful and easy thing to do as a way to empower yourself daily. Just write down all your favorite quotes or ones that greatly empower you and place them somewhere that you could see it daily. You could put them on your bathroom mirror, by your front door or on the refrigerator.

I have a friend that bought cheap picture frames and framed her most empowering quotes and placed them all around her shower. That way with every direction she turned, she was reading something empowering to her. This was genius because she typically showered in the mornings before starting her day so she already had a great start.

Plus, how symbolic it is to literally be cleansing yourself of dirt and refilling with inspiration. If there are no quotes you can think of, I can guarantee that an hour on Pinterest will help you find plenty! I created my own board of just inspirational quotes and such.

Now if quotes don’t impact you very much, I would suggest power poses. You have maybe heard of people that do the Superwoman/Superman pose in the mirror so that feel empowerment and the ability to conquer anything.

This pose meaning your hands on your hips with your chest puffed out. Not the hand in the air as if your flying (although do what works for you). The Superwoman/Superman pose is very powerful and can definitely work.

As I talked about in a previous article (16 Ways to Feel Like a More Empowered Woman), I would stand up straight with my chest puffed out and say “I am the Batman.” Obviously, I’m not, but there was something about knowing that I was in charge of Gotham City and all its inhabitants that made me feel truly empowered.

3. Help Someone Else

We always tend to think that empowering ourselves means we have to only do things for ourselves. However, helping someone other than yourself can be so empowering in itself.

Being able to use your abilities or talents to help someone achieve a goal is one of the most rewarding things you could ever experience. In fact, Steve Bloom, a writer for the website Do Something Cool talks about what is called a “helper’s high”.

He says that “scientists have been studying a phenomenon called “helper’s high”: helping others releases endorphins which, in turn, improves mood and boosts self-esteem. In short, helping others feels good. It’s possible that helping others does more for the happiness of the person helping than the person who receives the help” (Do Something Cool). Through helping others, you are able to learn more about yourself and what kind of person you are.

Remember how we talked about the outside factors that make us feel less empowered in the first place? Well doing something for others can help you to tackle that as well. It can help you to deal with stress better and build resilience.

In one study, college students took an immersion trip where they helped the poor. Those who took this trip were assessed months later and were found to manage stress and adversity much better than their peers.

Why is that?

It’s about perspective. By looking at the challenges of others’ lives, you can take that point of view into your own. It makes you more accepting of the stress and hardships we all have to face.

Sometimes we lose that perspective in a culture obsessed with celebrities living glorified lives, seemingly carefree. But helping others takes us back to reality by reminding ourselves that most people struggle and that it’s ok if we do too” (Do Something Cool).

It takes all of us together to create an empowered world!

4. Make a To-Do List Pexels

When I say create a to-do list, I am not saying to create one that has impossible tasks or tasks that will take forever. Instead, mix it up and put some big and little tasks on the list. So for example, your list could look like this

  • Take a shower
  • Mow the lawn
  • Eat lunch
  • Write paper for school
  • Paint nails

See how there are both challenging and easy tasks on the list. Now while this a pretty simplistic list, you could also create some for your life and what you want to get out of it. Having something like the Productivity Planner is a guaranteed way to help get your life under control and feel more empowered daily.

The planner allows you to accomplish the things in your life that are important and not just busywork. This means effectively prioritizing certain task that will help you achieve your goals, dreams, and ambitions.

It gets better.

I can honestly think of no better way to feel empowered on the daily than to organize your life in a manner that helps you reach your goals. Creating lists and goal planning will actually make you feel like you accomplished a lot and is a great way of empowering yourself daily.

5. Keep a Positive Journal Pexels

Now, this is something much different than the Productivity Planner. This is actually my favorite! A positive journal is where you write down the positive things in your life or the things that will have a positive effect. I wish I could say that I had thought of it myself but one of my friends introduced me to positive journals.

So you could take some of the same quotes from your inspiration wall, entries from a good day, movie stubs that will remind you of a good experience, or whatever. You just want to collect many things that make you happy and put you in a positive mood.

A positive journal is something that you can go and look at when you are having a crappy day and need to empower yourself. I would even challenge you to write, or place, something in that journal every day. That can be challenging because we all have those awful days, but try to find some positive that could be added.

I personally have one and it is one of the best remedies for a crappy day when I am feeling low and disheartened. In my positive journal, I keep notes people have written for me over the years, quotes, and paper memorabilia from my different travels. My positive journal is in my bed side table because it is close and handy for when I am feeling especially low.

Or Just Journaling

Here’s the deal.

If the positive journal is not for you, any form of journaling period can be so great for empowerment and your self-esteem. Huffington Post says that “There’s a strong connection between happiness and mindfulness. Journaling brings you into that state of mindfulness; past frustrations and future anxieties lose their edge in the present moment.  It calls a wandering mind to attention, from passivity to actively engaging with your thoughts” (Huffington Post).

Being able to stop and reflect can help bring you to the present and relax. Aside from the peace and mindfulness it brings, journaling can do much more. “Journaling is an outlet for processing emotions and increases self-awareness. This internal familiarity becomes a bridge of empathy, you’ll better intuit and understand what others are experiencing.

Being able to get on the same page with someone is a mark of emotional intelligence and allows for a much deeper connection” (Huffington Post). Plus, “journaling about a positive experience allows your brain to relive it. And reaffirms your abilities when the ugly head of self-doubt appears. The release of endorphins and dopamine will boost your self-esteem and mood. These reflections can become a catalog of personal achievements that you continue to go back to” (Huffington Post). So you would see nothing but positive results in journaling and a great easy way to empower yourself daily.

Using these 5 different tips, you are on your way to being empowered daily. Remember that it takes time and dedication to want to work on yourself. But just be kind to yourself and embrace these 5 tips and you are well on your way. I leave you with this beautiful quote from W.E.B. Dubois:
