New Wine Bar Coming to Downtown

Gabe Orta and Elad Zvi, co-founders of Bar Lab, announce today the opening of a new, independent concept, Margot Natural Wine & Aperitivo Bar. Set to open fourth quarter of 2019 in the Ingraham Building in Downtown Miami, the intimate bar will offer a modern and fresh take on the classic wine bar, with a focus on natural wines and low ABV cocktails such as amaro, aperitifs and vermouths.

Designed by Danya Hachey of MaD Artistic, who has been Bar Lab’s creative director since the original Broken Shaker pop-up, Margot will have an airy feel focusing on both femininity & functionality. Hachey is always inspired by the design of the late 60s, 70s & 80s, and for Margot the beautiful hues of natural wines definitely played a big role. She will incorporate all of these influences through playful color blocking and minimalistic custom furniture & millwork. Light wood accents and original artworks will add warmth & create an inviting backdrop for enjoying these lovely wines.

The playlist will include contemporary and classic R&B, soul and funk from predominantly female artists, and the food menu will focus on shared tapas, daily raw bar and seasonal offerings.

Orta and Zvi have opened award-winning cocktail bars the Broken Shaker (Miami, Chicago, Los Angeles and New York); 27 Restaurant and The Anderson in Miami; and The Exchange and Rudolph’s Bar & Tea in Los Angeles. Bar Lab has twice won the coveted Spirited Award at Tales of The Cocktail for Best American Hotel Bar, twice named James Beard Foundation Awards semifinalists for “Outstanding Bar Program”, has been repeatedly named to the World’s 50 Best Bars, and The Anderson was named to Esquire’s Best Bars of 2018.

In addition to Margot, Gabe and Elad have partnered with Timon Balloo to open Balloo: Modern Home Cookingthis summer and will also open a third concept in the winter of 2020, all located in the Ingraham Building. The Ingraham Building is located at 21 SE 2nd Avenue in Downtown Miami.

When you think about food in Little Havana, what do you normally think of? Chances are that Cuban cuisine is the first thing that pops into your mind. The neighborhood has no shortage of it, and it’s easy to overlook any newcomers among the mainstays that have been there for years. But if you overlook Sala’o Cuban Bar & Pescaderia, you’re making a huge mistake.

At first glance, Sala’o might seem like your usual Cuban joint. It’s not: The Ernest Hemingway-inspired eatery is helmed by Chef Jorge Mas — formerly of Niu Kitchen and Barceloneta — and he’s put together a bevy of impressive Caribbean and Latin flavors on the menu. Raw bar selections include familiar dishes like Ceviche that are priced at a steal for the quality. Appetizers are also predominantly seafood, but the Tartare de Vaca (beef tartare) was our favorite of the bunch; do not miss out on it.

Avoid overdoing it with appetizers, though, as mains come quick and hearty. Portions are more than generous, and you’ll likely find yourself with leftovers. The standout of the meal was the Pescado Salsa Perro (Catch of the Day), a perfectly cooked filet that had our taste buds dancing. As the description suggests, the fish changes daily but we’re hopeful the quality doesn’t. For something a little more homey, try the Harina Con Cangrejo — a Cuban cornmeal stew with crab meat. And meat-eaters need not worry, as chicken and other non-seafood options are available as well. But honestly, you’re here for the seafood.

The dessert menu is short and sweet, and we’ll save you some time: Get the Fanguito. The burnt milk mousse with dark chocolate and bread crumbs makes for a cool photo (plus it tastes great).  We didn’t have the chance to try the other choices — fruta bomba and timba — but we’ll definitely be back for them … especially at $6 and $5, respectively.

That’s why Sala’o made such an impression on us: It’s not only phenomenal food, but it’s also surprisingly affordable. You can come here, eat like royalty and not break the bank. It’s getting harder and harder to say that about restaurants in Miami, so this is a nice change of pace.

Palma Juice Co. Opens at The Citadel

The chef behind Jugofresh, Miami’s first cold-pressed juice bar, has opened Palma Juice Co., an environmentally-conscious, small-batch juice joint at The Citadel in Little River. Serving handcrafted juices and food with a little quirk, menu items include fresh juices, like the Leche de Tigre, made-to-order açaí bowls, smoothies, like the Antioxidant Beso, and wellness shots, like Throat Candy. Doing it with the environment in mind, all products will be bottled in glass and served in reusable or biodegradable wares.

“Palma Juice Co. was established because we were tired of the status-quo, and to be frank, the mediocre options available to the consumer, served mostly in single-use plastic,” said Darren Laszlo, head chef at Palma Juice Co. “We only use produce at its peak freshness while keeping our process small-batch and made-to-order. We take pride in what we are handcrafting and it doesn’t matter who you are or what your flavor palate is, if you like high-quality juices and food that tastes good, you should come to Palma.”

Palma Juice Co. believes that the quality of the product has a lot to do with the way it’s served. It’s why Palma is committed to not using any single-use plastic and taking steps to reduce its carbon footprint.

Chef Devin Braddock Joins Ark Hospitality

Newly appointed Pastry Chef Devin Braddock joins the powerhouse culinary team that makes up Ark Hospitality Group. Braddock was tapped to oversee the bread and pastry division for Ariete, Chug’s and Taurus Beer & Whiskey House. Boasting an impressive resumé with more than ten years of industry experience, Braddock embraces her newest venture working alongside celebrated Miami Chef Michel Beltran at his beloved Coconut Grove outposts.

After moving to Miami from Tampa to enroll at Johnson and Wales University in 2009, Chef Braddock quickly discovered that she would benefit more from hands-on experience that comes from being thrust into a busy kitchen. She shifted her focus and accepted her first pastry position at Sunny Isles Italian eatery, Café L’attito and didn’t look back.

Soon after, Braddock relocated to Wynwood Kitchen and Bar, where she served as Pastry Chef for three years. In 2012, she accepted a role under the tutelage of James Beard-nominated pastry legend Hedy Goldsmith at Michael’s Genuine in the Design District. During her time there, she learned a wealth of knowledge about molecular gastronomy and gives credit to the talented duo for her newfound organizational skills.

Next, she ascended to the role of Corporate Executive Pastry Chef at Chef Daniel Serfer’s Miami concepts, Mignonette and Blue Collar. And now, Chef Devin Braddock is pleased to announce her role working alongside one of Miami’s great young rising Chefs, Michael Beltran. “I’m excited to work with a team that really sees eye to eye with me on the passion, integrity and hard work that goes into making good food. With so much concentrated talent in one group, I’m excited to see what we can bring to the table.”

When we heard The Dutch was closing at W South Beach, we were bummed. Former pastry chef Josh Gripper had only recently become executive chef at the restaurant, and we didn’t really get much time to see him shine. Thankfully, he’s continuing in that role at The Dutch’s replacement: The Restaurant at W South Beach (RWSB).

That name doesn’t sound exciting on its own, but once you experience the menu that Chef Gripper and his team have put together, there’s a lot of excitement to be had. For brunch, you can expect American classics with flair such as French Toast with lemon cream and toasted hazelnut, a Duck Hash with red eye gravy and a Jerk Chicken and Waffle. On paper, the fare sounds familiar but Chef Gripper keeps it interesting with his own little touches. If brunch isn’t your thing, the menu offers less breakfast-y bites like an Organic Grains bowl and various pizzas as well.

Because of the variety, RWSB is a great spot to bring both adventurous and not-so-adventurous eaters. One thing everyone can agree on, though, are the desserts. While we didn’t have room for them this time, our previous pastry experiences at the hotel have been nothing less than stellar — especially with Chef Gripper at the helm. We have to warn you that the restaurant has been open a little over a month now, so the brunch menu may have seen a few changes since our visit. With that said, one thing likely hasn’t changed: the quality.

The Restaurant W South Beach (RWSB) is located at 2201 Collins Ave inside The W South Beach on Miami Beach. For hours of operation and other information, visit their official website or call 305-938-3112.
