Lip care is an essential regimen in order to have that perfect pout. Here’s how you can care for your lips:

Pop Quiz: What is the one asset every woman possesses that can instantly get a man’s heart racing? Purge those kinky thoughts, because the answer is your lips. Apparently research shows that when we meet a guy, the first thing he gets fixated about is our lips. Hard to believe, we know! Now that you are aware of this little secret, it’s absolutely essential to keep your lips pucker ready at all times. But before you rush to the store to scoop that fiery scarlet lip colour, understand that painting your lips is not the only thing it takes to boast of a sexy pout. You need to constantly care for your lips and protect them from dryness, cracking, chapping and sun damage.

Lip-o-dissection

Care for your smackers begins essentially by realising certain facts about your lips. They are composed of very thin layers of skin which makes them the most vulnerable part of your face. Also lips don’t have any oil glands to naturally hydrate themselves. Drying winters, low humidity, smoking and our instinct to lick our lips cause them to lose moisture resulting in splits and chaps and don’t leave a lot to smile about.

Lips don’t lie

The thing with chapped lips is that, unlike troubled skin, you cannot conceal it. Use any product on cracked lips and it will just make it more prominent. But don’t fret because combating this problem is super easy and most of the remedies for its cure are sitting in our kitchen cabinets. Check out a couple of them below.

  • Purified Butter aka Ghee: The most natural form of lip balm that ever existed. Just slather a layer before hitting the sack and see the difference in the morning. Coconut oil is also equally effective.
  • Black Tea: Dip black tea bags in boiling water. Once the bags are lukewarm, press them over your lips to dramatically increase its moisture levels.
  • Honey and Aloe Vera: Both have natural antibacterial elements. While aloe vera soothes and cools sun damaged lips, honey is perfect for moisturising and healing cracks and cuts on the lips. For quick relief, mix extra virgin olive oil with beeswax. Apply this paste for 10-15 minutes and remove it by using a cotton ball dipped in warm water.
  • Vaseline + Toothbrush: Hard to get, we figure! Just slather on Vaseline on your lips and then using a soft toothbrush, gently rub in circular movements. Wipe the Vaseline off with a tissue for lips that are soft and colour ready!
Keep calm with some balm

Think of lip balm as a tinted, sweet smelling armour for your lips when it’s in the line of duty against the world. Lip balms are quick and easy to apply and work by sealing the moisture on your lips with its waxy or greasy content. The market is flooded with options so take your pick.

Need a slimmer face? Try some face yoga!

If you dutifully follow a fitness routine, you are likely to have a smaller, thinner face. But if a sleepless night, too much partying or even PMSing has left you with jowls, try these exercises to slim down your face and get a more contoured jawline and slimmer cheeks.

The ‘O’ face
  • Stand in front of the mirror – facing straight.
  • Make a surprised face – open out your eyes and make a face as if you were to pronounce the letter O – aka the surprised face.
  • While holding this pose, further stretch the area below your nose, look up, and hold for 10-15 seconds.
  • Do this twice, once a day.
Hang out that tongue
  • Stand in front of the mirror – facing straight.
  • Open your mouth wide (hope you are alone by the way, lest your scare off someone!) and stretch out your tongue towards your chin as much as you can
  • From that position, open your eyes wide, looking upward with all you’ve got, and hold for 10-15 seconds.
  • Do this twice, once a day
Tongue to nose
  • Again, standing alone in front of a mirror – stick your tongue as far out as possible, angling the tip upward
  • From that pose, tilt you head back as far as you can (hold on to something for balance though), and hold for 10-15 seconds.
  • Do this twice, once a day

As yoga exponents say, Namaste!

Say the word paraben and purists shudder. And yet most if not all of what we use, contains them. Here’s the good, bad and ugly about parabens…

Make a quick trip to the shower cabinet. Check the long list of ingredients pasted on bottles of the longer array of products lined up on your shelf – all stuff that you’ve picked up over the months in hope of smoother skin, silkier hair, a fairer face. But are you paying too heavy a price? Here’s how you can find out. In each of the lists, look for the word ‘paraben’ – the word may be in conjunction with others like methyl (methylparaben), propyl (propylparaben), isopropyl (isopropylparaben), butyl (butylparaben), isobutyl (isobutylparaben), and so forth. Do the same drill for all products – shampoos, deodorants, conditioners, lotions, shower gels, face washes, scrubs. If you find any member of the paraben family tucked away in any of the lists of contents, set them aside for the moment. Read what we have to say and then decide whether you will retain them in your beauty closet.

Why parabens?

Parabens are basically a family of chemical compounds that have a deadly effect on micro-organisms like bacteria and fungi which proliferate in stagnant water. Thus they are used widely by cosmetics companies as preservatives in water-based cosmetic products. To put it simply, parabens are chemicals that are responsible for attractively long expiry dates on the bottles. Chances are that the latter the date, the more the parabens used in the product. But when a chemical is harmful to microscopic living organisms, it stands to reason that they will also have some kind of toxic effect on living cells of the human body. And this is where we start sliding down a slippery slope.

Are they bad?

Over the years, there has been increasing suspicion that parabens are extremely harmful to the human body, especially the female body. Scientific studies have linked parabens to breast cancer, and though it’s still in the test-tube and microscope stages of lab experimentation, most of the research indicates that parabens wreak havoc on the body’s hormone system. The problem can be attributed to the fact that parabens have the same cell structure as that of oestrogen, a hormone that is all important for the smooth functioning of the female reproductive and endocrine systems. Parabens, which mimic oestrogens, are mistaken for oestrogen molecules by their receptors, leading to an escalation in oestrogen levels in the body. Herein lies the crux of the problem: excessive oestrogen predisposes women to breast cancer. One of the most clinching pieces of evidence on the toxicity of parabens came from a study conducted a few years ago, where the chemical was found in each of the tissue samples taken from 40 women with breast cancer in the UK. Of course, this does not imply that it’s the parabens that caused the cancer, but the discovery was unsettling enough to merit further investigations.

What to do?

Should you stop using paraben-containing products? That’s a big question for if you do, you will end up throwing most if not all of your bottles. What you can do, is limit the use. Most cosmetics giants mass produce their stuff have to resort to use of parabens because its one of the cheapest preservatives around. But smaller niche companies which specialise in paraben-free cosmetics may charge the world for it. There are paraben-free alternatives that don’t cost the world, and in the bargain come with shorter shelf lives. You can always opt for these, and use them frequently and exclusively, so as to finish up your stocks quickly.

Great to eat but good to apply too… The humble honey has great properties for the skin and hair. Go on we say, take a dip, in honey!

Even before Cleopatra was using it to enhance her legendary beauty (and hook Mark Antony and Caesar), honey was considered a wonder cure for skin, hair, and overall well-being. The uses of honey have been illustrated even in our history of Ayurveda, and have passed on from generations right on to our own mothers and grandmothers suggesting honey for just about anything ranging from acne, dry hair, to wrinkles.

What’s so great about it?
  1. Honey has anti bacterial properties, and is therefore great for treating acne.
  2. It can be used as a mild antiseptic—when mixed with water, it produces hydrogen peroxide (due to one of the enzymes found in raw honey), a mild antiseptic that can be used to effectively treat cuts and abrasions.
  3. The sugar in honey makes it a great humectant, thus enabling it to absorb and retain high levels of moisture, which explains why most moisturisers use honey as a key ingredient! Honey is great for dry hair because it adds moisture to the cuticle. When mixed with warm water, it lubricates the hair shaft.
  4. Honey also makes for a great exfoliant – it contains mild alpha hydroxy acids, such as gluconic acid, that effectively cleanse the skin. These acids also increase elasticity, balance oily skin, stimulate collagen production, and minimise lines and wrinkles.

When consumed, honey improves blood circulation and cleanses the system.

Honey-Loving at Home!

While there are a gazillion kitchen recipes that use honey for the skin, hair and just about anything – we’ve picked some of our tried-and-tested favorites for you:

  1. Refreshing Cucumber-Honey Toner: Puree one cucumber and collect the juice. Add 3 teaspoons of honey and mix. Pour this mixture into a bottle and store this in the fridge for up to one week. Apply on the face and neck and rinse off to reveal glowing skin!
  2. Weekly Honey-Oat Scrub: Combine one tablespoon of honey, one tablespoon of finely-ground almonds, two tablespoons of dry oatmeal, and some lemon juice or yogurt (for balanced acidity).  Massage this mixture gently onto face, and rinse with warm water.  Use twice a week for a deeply emollient cleansing of your face.
  3. Cleopatra’s Milk-Honey Bath: Mix ¼ cup of honey, ¼ cup of milk, and add a few drops of your preferred essential oil to this mixture.  Add to your hot bath water for silky and luscious skin. This is especially good for dry skin.
  4. Olive-me-up Hair Conditioning Treatment: For lustrous, silky, healthy hair and scalp, simply combine ½ cup honey with ¼ cup olive oil and a few drops of essential oil. Massage scalp with this conditioner, then put on a shower cap for 30 minutes. Shampoo and rinse as usual.

Being a rather harried work-from-home mommy has its funny moments, including running out of beauty product at the nth hour. So here are some of my favourite substitutes and face savers!

Rosy-Posy

Once you hit 30, while age is not so much an issue, tiredness certainly is. Lack of sleep, heavy dinners, or just overall fatigue can really show on your face and make you look a little haggard. So here are my face savers:

  • Ice, ice baby: Run an ice cube all over the face! If that sounds a bit extreme, then just splash your face with lots of cold water, right from the refrigerator door! Cold water revitalizes the skin, reduces any puffiness and puts that sparkle back in your eye.
  • Cold, cold drops: Keep your serum in the refrigerator, the night before. Your skin gets a further tingly boost from cold serum, as opposed to a room temperature one.
  • Flush with blush: Nothing like bespoke rosy cheeks to bring back the first flush of youth. But omigod, you’re out of blush? No need to panic – you can do two things here. Raid your lipstick cabinet for that shimmer red, pink or even fuschia to really let your cheeks shine (I have used the Flormar DC31 rather successfully!). Else, for a more natural “tint” – slice up a beet and rub gently on your cheeks. Let it be for 5-10 minutes and then wash off, pat (not rub) dry for softly and naturally tinted cheeks…
Hair and how:

With the current lifestyle and genetics going a tad awry, early graying is now a norm. So sometimes, you might just realize that your party night out, is being offset by those shiny strands in your hair! So what to do?

  • Band it: Bring back those whirly, sparkly cloth bands that you rejected for a more “mature” look! Try using a “double” hair band – once goes on in the front and the other goes back to create a little pouf.
  • Braid it: Grecian braids that adorn the crown of your hair should make it all okay.
  • Hide it: If the grays are few and far between, just run a bit of your mascara on the strands – dab with a tissue to avoid any clumping!

Just Herbs Cascade Moisturising Day Care Lotion: This day care lotion is reinforced with the hydrating action of Aloe Vera and antioxidant properties of Wheatgerm oil. It restores moisture to the deepest layers of skin, and helps the skin to maintain its natural moisture thus plumping up fine lines that occur as a result of dryness. Peeling cuticles, a biting habit or just inflamed one – a little TLC can add a lot to your finger ends…

They say that your touch is as good as a therapy. But what if your fingers mar the show? Even perfectly painted nails and well moisturized hands can end up looking uncared for if your cuticles are dry, peeling and just plain unsightly. Here’s help…

Ease the pain: If your cuticles are painful and swollen, make a tepid warm finger bath to which you have added a teaspoon of table salt as a natural antiseptic and a few drops of glycerin. Soak your fingers in the bath for ten minutes and then pat them dry. .

The right tools
  1. Once the pain is gone and the cuticles are healed, remove the any excess. Clip any peeling cuticles using a nipper and push back the ones that have grown a little longer with a hoof or cuticle stick.
  2. Shop for a cuticle remover that contains at least two or more of these ingredients: potassium hydroxide, alpha hydroxyl acid, essential oil, panthenol and sodium salt. Pour generous quantities of the same in a cotton ball and dab over your dry and calloused cuticles. Let it soak the cuticles and soften them so that you can buff away the dry skin.
  3. You can also remove excess cuticles using a V-blade. Buff nails and cuticle once done.
  4. Follow it up by massaging the cuticles with a few drops of warm natural oil. Be it olive or jojoba, eucalyptus or castor, feel free to use the oil you prefer the most. Things that will remain unaltered are that you need to apply it to your fingertips and gently massage to the cuticles. You can also use Vitamin E oil (just cut open a capsule to get the oil) in order to nourish them.
  5. Continue pampering your nails and fingers by making it a point to massage hand and nail cream daily, specifically when you go to sleep. For some extra TLC for dry hands or cuticles, massage in cream, then layer on Vaseline and slip on a pair cotton gloves to lock in the moisture.

Make-up can be fun even if you don’t have a big occasion to doll up for. Bring together your favourite products and experiment at home just for kicks…

Face-off!

Foundation, powder, blush and bronzer can remake your face completely and you have any so many items to experiment with. You can use a brush, a sponge or just your fingers.

  • Blusher is used on top of powder traditionally to add rosy cheeks to a slightly paler face where as an earthier toned shades just add dimension to a face. With blusher one or two sweeping strokes with a big fluffy brush will do the job of looking naturally glowing rather than china-doll-pink-cheeks.
  • With bronzer be careful with the amount you put on. Many people may not even need it at all. It should be applied in the same way as blusher except with more care as you don’t want to look orange. To achieve a chiseled look apply a bronzer that is two times darker than your skin tone to the hollows of your cheeks. This is called contouring and creates the illusion of more prominent cheekbones
  • You can also try using a concealer. For the under-eye area, a yellow blended concealer works well as it brightens eyes and hides dark circles. For around nose or mouth believe it or not but a green-based concealer works best as it conceals redness.
  • If you have a broad forehead (a five head!); dust a matte bronzer along your hairline and on your temples. The bronzer will create a shadow that will make you forehead appear smaller. To create the illusion of a smaller nose, dust a highlighter powder down the bridge of your nose. The lighter color will make the sides of your nose appear smaller.
Eye-catching
  • This is my favorite part of make-up because there’s just so much you can do, from liners to pencils to eyeshadows.
  • For a flirty look a cat-eye flick looks best – the eyeliner swoops up from the eyelash line on top and stops at your chosen length. When applying eyeliner on the lower lids, apply it thinner on the inside of the eye and thicker as it goes towards the outside of the eyes.
  • White eyeliner-is used to open eyes up and make them appear to be bigger. Remember less is more.
  • Enhance your eye colour with eyeshadow shades that will make your eyes pop. For brown or hazel eyes, golds and browns are gorgeous as are blues. Blue eyes look great with blue-gray, coppers, gold and browns and dark eyes look fantastic with deep rich shades.
Lip-lock

To plump up thin lips, I recommend lip gloss. Add a little colour first by filling in lips with a lip liner or lipstick a shade or two darker than your natural lip color, then add a dab of gloss on top and voila! An instant lip plumper.

What’s so great about vitamin E? Read on to find out…

So you’ve been ignoring those vitamin supplements lying on the dinner table for months, haven’t you? Join the club. But since it’s that time of the year when it’s cool to develop positive, beneficial new habits, it might be a good idea to give those pills a second look and a second thought. Vitamin E’s primary role in your beauty battle is to strengthen your armoury against ageing skin. Usually, atoms that constitute our skin cells exist in a balanced state – with an equal number of electrons and protons. But thanks to the abrasion caused to our skin by pollutants, unavoidable radiation from the sun and other sources such as the TV, computer and microwave, this balance is disrupted, and free radicals – atoms with uneven, imbalanced particles – are generated. These free radicals, desperate to restore their equilibrium, start ‘stealing’ electrons from other, healthy skin cells, damaging them. While young supple skin has its own powers to replace dead and damaged skin cells or heal them, this ability gradually wanes with the passage of time, and so you are left fine lines, wrinkles, spots and freckles. In this losing battle, Vitamin E is your knight in shining armour, as it actually has the anti-oxidising property to counter the effect of such free radicals by neutralising them, thereby protecting your skin from radiation.

Eat some E

Alas, our body doesn’t produce this super-vitamin, and so it is imperative that your daily diet supplies you with sufficient amounts of it. There are many easily accessible, inexpensive foods rich in the vitamin.

  • Go nuts. Almonds, peanuts, hazelnuts, pistachios, are rich sources of the vitamin.
  • If you like to spice things up, go on, add that extra dash of red chilli powder to your curry, or sprinkle your pizza and salads heartily with paprika, oregano and basil, all of which are stocked with the vitamin.
  • If veggies add that extra crunch to your life, opt for spinach, broccoli, bell peppers, tomato, even the humble butternut squash.
Skin Benefits

With such a host of vegetables and snacks to choose from, there’s no excuse to deprive your skin of this elixir for youth. Having said that, it’s not just the intake, but also the application of Vitamin E can that can work miracles for unhealthy skin.

  • Application of a cream enriched with the vitamin would help heal the dermis by stimulating the production of collagen and balancing out the free radicals. And it doesn’t stop there. Vitamin E protects your cuticles, which is why many of your nail products contain it.
  • Vitamin E oil also works wonders on chapped lips, cracked heels, sunburnt skin and acne scars – basically any part of your skin that is damaged and needs healing.
  • Vitamin E protects your skin from sun damage too, so it’s always a good idea to choose a sunscreen which lists it as an ingredient.
  • Vitamin E is often a key ingredient in toners, as it has the added benefit of having cleansing, hydrating and moisturising properties, all in one. It’s small wonder, then, that it is referred to as the ‘skin vitamin.’ So if you’re the kind that is too lazy for an elaborate cleansing, toning, moisturising routine, just dab a few drops of vitamin E oil on a cotton ball and wipe your face gently with it. Vitamin E will take care of the rest.

Good sleep is essential for health, but did you know it’s also imperative for beauty?

Beauty sleep is not just an idle phrase: snoozing really does improve your appearance. The right amount and kind of sleep, will make you look more rested, less stressed and overall more attractive!  While everyone needs different amounts of sleep, your goal should be to get six to eight hours of quality sleep each night. This much sleep stimulates growth hormones, which promotes an overall healthy body and allows more production of collagen and elastin – that keep your skin taut and youthful.

  1. Put that face up: What goes up comes down, and that’s true for skin too! All day long, gravity pulls your skin down, contributing to facial sagging and wrinkles. The night gives your skin a chance to relax and rejuvenate by lying down. If you sleep with your face pressed to the pillow, you’ll just look puffier in the morning (and develop sleep lines, ack!). Switch to sleeping on your back to allow gravity to exert a light stretching effect on your skin, in all directions, giving you a mini “face-lift” by morning.
  2. Get that cream: Most night creams comprise topical retinoids, which treat and target acne, brown spots and wrinkles. The absence of sunlight is what makes these creams and their active ingredient so very useful – best to apply these on a clean face juts before you plop into bed…

  4. An open mouth catches rot: One night-time habit that can seriously ruin your mouth’s good looks: sleeping with your mouth open. The environment your mouth is exposed to, dries the gums and enamel, causing gingivitis and possible tooth decay… So along with brushing and flossing, remember to keep that mouth shut.
  5. More sleep = a slimmer you: Lack of sleep makes you overeat and can also cause you to crave more calorie-dense, carbohydrate-rich foods. If your grocery list contains a large amount of cake, ice cream, pasta and bread, it’s time to hit the sack! A  study on the effects of diet and sleep has proven that if you are sleeping less, your body produces higher levels of ghrelin – a hormone that triggers hunger and slows down metabolism. Who said musk is only for the man?

An interesting but lesser known fact about ‘musk’ and ‘women’ is that a woman’s sensitivity to musk, an ingredient commonly used in perfumes, is roundabout a 1000 times greater than a man’s.
