Summer is the hottest time of the year.
Summer’s high temperatures can have a negative effect on almost everything.
This includes your vehicle. Austin summer weather conditions can push a vehicle
past its breaking point. This can lead to a few drivers winding up stranded at
the roadside. It is important to be prepared for this time of the year. Here
are five tips to keep you from becoming one of these stranded Texas drivers.
• KEEP YOUR ENGINE COOL
Cooling protects motors from
overheating and cracking. Between fluid flushes, ensure the coolant is
filled to the optimal level in the overflow tank. Be careful, never remove the
radiator cap when the vehicle engine is hot. Bubbling coolant under pressure can
cause very serious damage and injuries. Other car components are vulnerable to
heat related weakening. Inspect hoses and drive belts for breaking, weaknesses
or other instances of wear while under the hood.
• MAKE SURE FLUIDS ARE AT
One important thing to take note of during
summer is the fluid level of your vehicle. This is because engine fluids lubricate as well
as cools the engine by taking heat away from critical parts. When
vehicle fluids level is low, the chances of overheating are increased. Make
sure to check your vehicle fluids as often as possible. If you need to top off,
make sure you follow manufacturer recommended brands.
• MAKE SURE YOUR TIRES ARE
Driving on under-inflated tires can make tires
overheat and increase the chance of a blowout, particularly when street
temperatures are very high. Check your vehicle’s tire pressure at least once
every month. Tires ordinarily lose around one pound of weight for each month
through standard use leakage. Also, check tire weights when the
tires are cold as heat causes expansion of gasses.
MAKE SURE YOUR BATTERY IS READY FOR HIGH TEMPERATURES
Hot Texas summers can have a more negative
effect on your battery than winter temperatures. Heat and vibration are a
battery’s two worst nightmares. It could lead to inside breakdown and possible
dead battery. While you can’t do much about the weather, you can ensure your battery
is safely mounted to limit vibration. Another potential issue is faster evaporation of battery
liquid, which can corrode terminals. Clean off any
corrosion from battery terminals and link cinches, make sure there is a conducting dielectric grease and
ensure the clamps are very tight and won’t move.
COMFORTABLE DRIVING ENVIRONMENT
In summer, safety is an issue. The heat can
cause irritability and distraction.
One thing never mentioned that is very important while driving in our hot
weather is comfort. Have comfortable shoes, use air conditioning when you need
it, sunglasses to prevent glare and stay rested and hydrated. Distraction and
irritability cause mistakes, mistakes can be fatal on the road. Remember your
health and safety are part of your traveling performance as well. Stop and rest
when you have to and try to stay calm and distraction free while driving.
In conclusion, even with preventive support, summer breakdowns can in any case happen, make sure you have a well-loaded emergency kit in your vehicle. Make sure you and your vehicle are summer ready before driving in summer. If you have any needs, remember to give us a call at 512-710-2286 to schedule your summer service today!
We would like to take a moment to break away from cars and self-promotion and talk about something entirely different and unrelated to car sales and service and talk about something vastly more important than almost any other issue on the planet. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month, and Luxury Auto Works is dedicated to protecting children in every way.
Earlier this month, we made a donation to the Center for Child Protection in Austin because if there is one issue that transcends politics, income or any other divisive issue, that is one of child protection.
The Center for Child Protection is a large children’s advocacy center that is nationally accredited for quality and safety. This center has been the main and often only advocate for crimes against children for almost three decades protecting children suspected to be victims of sexual, violent or other crimes.
Anyone who watches cop shows like CSI: SVU can appreciate the delicate nature of dealing with crimes against children. The Center for Child Protection has specialists in a child-friendly environment trained to interview children and process medical testing.
Additionally, the center operates entirely free of charge to the community, this is why we encourage the community as a whole to support them.
One in ten
That is the chance a child will be sexually abused by their 18th birthday by an adult. In addition to the incredible advocacy and medical services the center offers, you can contact them for free training in what to look for in abuse, provide options for reporting and protections for those who keep our children safe. If you would like more information on these free community training, feel free to schedule training now.
If you are in immediate need of child protection, please call the police now. Do not wait until next time or any other excuse. The Austin Police Department investigates criminal cases of sexual abuse of children 17 and under. Report child abuse and neglect cases to the Texas Abuse Hotline at 1-800-252-5400 or by calling 911.
“Disclosure without therapy is the second rape of the child.”
Deciding to get a new car is tough. You have to research several cars to narrow it down, then find a car, then go through the buying process. If that doesn’t make it hard enough, you also have to finance it and decide what to do with your old vehicle. Should you trade in your car or sell it first? That decision should be made depending on many things.
Why Is A Trade-In Less?
Trading in your car is definitely simple. But a chief complaint is you will not always get a high price for it. There are excellent reasons for this. Here at Luxury Auto Works, our pre-owned cars have to go through an extreme process to be put on the lot. If cars were people, we would be the Olympic qualifiers.
When we purchase a car for trade in, it goes through a full inspection. Fluids are replaced, worn and damaged parts are replaced, and a complete safety process is conducted. Cars are detailed top to bottom and inspected for damage and repaired when possible. Sometimes significant problems are discovered, and we have to scrap the car or sell it at an auction for a loss of thousands. Factor in the labor, materials, and being able to make a reasonable profit to keep the lights on and people employed, that mark up is not near what many think.
Factors That Can Boost Trade-In Value
All vehicles are not treated the same, of course. If you bring us a car that is three years old or less, full-service records, no accidents, freshly cleaned and it is an in-demand vehicle, we can likely offer you close to what you would be able to get selling privately without the hassle.
Another factor is to keep in mind what the dealer’s specialty is. We are always interested in a BMW, Mercedes, Audi or Range Rover with 12,000 miles on it that will move fast. If you have an older vehicle but in good shape, you may do better at Carmax and then bring your money here for a down payment.
However, if you are towing in your 2000 Honda Civic you bought used in high school, it is unlikely to be sold anywhere and will have to be scrapped, so you may only get $100 even if it blue books for $1000.
A consideration often overlooked if the tax difference. When you trade in a vehicle, you do not pay a fee on the difference. For example, if you buy a $20,000 BMW or Mercedes, but you get $10,000 on a trade-in, you only pay taxes on a $10,000 car rather than full price. That can save you hundreds in charges, so if your concern is the hassle of potentially making an extra $1000, remember, when you sell privately, you then have to pay tax on the income, as well as the full price of the car tax, this can quickly come to well over $1000!
Remember, in most cases, we take a trade-in as a convenience to you. Most of the cars people trade in we cannot sell, so we aren’t doing this to make top dollar, neither do most dealers. The convenience of driving in and driving out in your car in a few hours is a huge benefit to our busy customers. You do not need to feel obligated to trade in with private party or us. The decision is ultimately yours and what works best for you and your needs.
If you are thinking of selling your car to buy a new one, remember, you can always call any of our locations and just ask. We will be more than happy to tell you if you have an in-demand car we can work with or if you may be better off with other options.
Valentine’s day is coming up, and that means it is time to pamper your true love with attention and affection. That means you may want to book a time at the car day spa for a fluid replacement and wash and wax. What are your date plans for your 4-wheeled love this Valentine’s day? No plans? Here are some ideas. Many people schedule annual, biannual or quarterly services for the new year, but this can cause scheduling problems because everyone else is doing it as well. Waiting until February, you are past all the new year’s schedules and can have an easier time getting service done, so schedule annual Valentine’s service and cleaning so your car is ready for the date.
This is a simple way you can show your baby you love her. You can even do it at home. It is always a good idea to have a once in a while complete cleaning for your car. If you have a date for Valentines, you will want your car to be perfect for a special night, and if you don’t, you have nothing better to do than spend the day on a deep detail cleaning at the car wash! Single or not, it is a good idea.
Oil should be changed every 5,000-10,000 miles depending on the type of oil, so at the beginning of the year and then again before a summer road trip or 4th of July are good times for most regular drivers. Transmission, power steering, and differential oil every 3 years, so if you are approaching 3 years, now is a good time. Power steering fluid is recommended every two years, but some add it to an annual service because it is easy enough to all do at once. So, if your car is coming up on three or six years old, this is a definite for your to-do list.
Tires need an occasional rotation as well. Most recommend every 5,000 to 10,000 miles, which puts it in at the same time as an oil change. So, while you are getting those fluids done, add a tire rotation to it.
Any high-performance BMW, Mercedes or other vehicle needs an annual inspection. Recommended is every 10,000 miles. This is a good time to do many of our ideas mentioned here as well as have a full overall inspection for incoming problems. Make sure your electrical and other systems are in good shape and not wearing down. It is better to have an annual inspection and find something before it breaks than wind up on the side of the freeway a month later.
Or, maybe you need to do all of the above and are not all that willing to drop hundreds on an annual service, hundreds more for tires and a $100 detail. That can be over $1000 just for a tune-up! A final idea is why not go for a valentines gift to yourself or significant other and just come by for a trade in and use that $1000 for a down payment on something on our lot. Guaranteed fresh fluids, tires and detailed already. Isn’t it time for a reward anyway?
No matter what your plans are for your car, annual and biannual services are always smart for safety and maintaining resale value. If you are not sure if you are due or need to have some routine service, make sure to give us a call.
The end of the year is fast approaching, and that means there are several reasons to buy a car before the year ends.
End of the year bonus
Put that Christmas bonus to good use and make that step to getting yourself the car you have wanted all year. It is the time for new year, new you, what is a better way to improve that mentality than a beautiful new vehicle to replace that old, clunky you?
With the end of the year comes the holidays. Do you have a significant other or a child who is due for a new car soon? Why not make it easy and make it an extra special Christmas present! With our inventory, we have a huge selection of almost new luxury cars at excellent competitive prices and quality. Now is a good time to stop putting off the inevitable and just do it.
Personal tax benefits
Starting in 2018, married couples have a joint deduction of $10,000 on state and local taxes. So, if you have not hit your limit and are considering replacing your vehicle soon, this is an excellent way to maximize your deduction. Also, many professions are now getting pass-through income benefits for s corp and partnerships. You can now take a 20% deduction for your vehicle, and this tax break sunsets in 2025, so if you are considering a work vehicle, now is the time to do it to take advantage of this savings.
Business tax benefits
Depreciation of luxury car expenses has risen substantially in 2018 if you use more than 50% of your vehicle for business. You may also be able to write off some of the cost of your repairs. The price of a car is considered a capital expense since these expenses expect to last longer than a year, they are not deductible, however, with a 179 deduction is a depreciation allowance. Depreciation allows you to recover the costs by breaking up the deduction over several years.
No matter what, you don’t even need a reason to get a new car this year. You work hard; you should enjoy the fruit of your hard work. So, even if the above doesn’t apply to you, you deserve to treat yourself, so come down and do it.
In short: The time to buy that car you have been considering is NOW. With the end of the year incentives and tax benefits, you really can’t afford to lose the opportunity if you have been considering it or plan to buy soon. Call us at 512-710-2448 or contact us on Facebook or our web page to book an appointment today.
Car buying is stressful enough. When you are in the market for your next vehicle, remember to read this over and get ready for your next Austin car sales experience in a more relaxed and professional way by being prepared. Here are some simple steps you can take to make sure it is as comfortable as possible.
1. Don’t just show up at a dealership.
Establish communication with a specific salesperson ahead of time. Use the website or Facebook marketplace and set an appointment to see a vehicle. It is the best way to make sure your needs are met in a timely and orderly fashion if you have arranged a time for yourself. Make sure to arrive on time or cancel if there is a change in plans. Remember, sales people rely on appointments for feeding their families, if the appointment does not show, they lose their turn, as well as an opportunity to make money for several hours that day because they have to wait for you in case you arrive late.
2. Know your credit score and what interest rate you can get.
There are few things worse on both sides of the table is spending hours test driving that new BMW or Mercedes around the Austin streets only to come back, fill out some paperwork and find out you have a 570 rather than 750 credit score. A high and low score can make or break you, even if you make plenty of money to make the payment. Besides, having an idea of what your interest rate will be is very helpful in choosing your overall budget. Be ready to know what your limits are, if any before you go in.
3. Get a feel for the market.
Know which cars are popular and why. Cars like the Lexus GS, Jaguar XF, even some Audi’s and Land Rovers are slower off the showroom floor so they can be priced to move. Market demand makes a huge difference. However, if you want a Lexus RX, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, or BMW X3, you need to know so do a lot of other people, so a dealership knows it will not be long before someone buys it no questions asked. Try to pick two or three options rather than holding fast to one exact car, flexibility can get you a lot in car buying.
4. Try to select the vehicle you want from their website.
If you have an idea of what you want, check out our website for something similar. We also offer cars on the Facebook marketplace. Once you find what you want, contact us to see if it is still here and set an appointment. We will make sure to have it cleaned and ready for your arrival. Also remember, we price most of our inventory to be haggle free. We like our car buying experience to be happy and smooth, we know people dread price negotiation, so we make an effort to have our inventory already priced better than other dealerships to avoid this hassle. We want you to have an easy, stress0free transaction.
5. Schedule an appointment for mid-week.
Weekends are a slower time for you, but they are not for us. This is the day everyone wants to come to see us for obvious reasons. The experience is often more crowded, confusing and rushed. We want you to be relaxed and happy when you come to look at your choice. While many have no choice, if you can set a mid-week appointment during the day, you will not regret it. There is something beautiful about having a less crowded and less stressful location to conduct business.
So, after you have prepared yourself, pick up the phone or hit us on the internet to schedule an appointment to take a look at that car you have selected. You have done your homework and know what you want. We will soon have a third location up by the end of the year in Pflugerville, Texas so remember, no matter where you are in the greater Austin area, we can meet your car needs, call us today if you have any other questions!
Maintaining your vehicle is necessary. It is one of those things everyone has to do that nobody wants to do. The problem many have is in perspective. Maintenance is time and money consuming. Nobody likes giving up either. We rarely think of maintenance as improving the safety of the vehicle, of extending the life of the car and thus resell value. Maintenance done right saves money and time in the long run. Which do you prefer, a 2-hour $500 wait for new belts and oil, or a three day and $10,000 wait for a new engine? Also, a maintained car saves fuel and is better for the environment.
Thankfully, not everything needs fixing at a shop! While we love servicing your vehicle and know that for more complicated repairs and maintenance, Luxury Auto Works is the place to go. We also know that sometimes a simple issue 15 minute fix can happen without the need to come here. Here are five tips for simple fixes for your car’s performance.
Car Battery Inspection At A Glance
This may be one of the most natural simple maintenance procedures you can do. A dead battery is a common problem that can leave you stranded and wasting plenty of time and money at the wrong time. A couple of times per year, you should check your battery terminals for dry white battery acid. If there is any acid, remove the cables from your battery (do the negative cable first). Next, give them a good cleaning and apply some dielectric grease to the connections. You can often scrape it all off and clean with steel wool and/or a wire brush in under 15 minutes. Baking soda and a little water also help make the job easier.
Some batteries still have access to water levels. This is an excellent time to pop off the cap and check for water levels. If your battery is low, you add a proper amount of distilled water and close the cap, and you that is it!
Wiper Blades Replaced At Least Annually
One of the biggest safety concerns when driving is visibility. Without proper wiper blades, you lose a crucial safety element in rain or other adverse conditions. Waiting until it rains is a tragic mistake that costs lives every year. When the rain comes, comes slower driving, and you suddenly do not have time to stop. If your blades skip or streak, you should make a point to change them out right away.
It is generally wise to give your blades at least a quarterly inspection and cleaning. Wipe them free of dirt and inspect them for cracks. Wiper blades typically need changing every six months to a year. Remember, to make it easy, you may want to merely take the wiper blade off and bring it in with you to match. It is also recommended to buy a second pair to keep in the trunk in case of an emergency.
Fuses are the go-to for most electrical problems. They mostly all work the same. If you have an electrical problem such as a light not turning on or seat belts not latching, consult the owners manual for the location of the fuse and check to see if you have a blown a fuse. Most fuses have a connecting metal piece inside, if broken, you need a new fuse. To be safe, you can pull another nearby fuse and compare the two. A fuse replacement can cost pennies and take 5 minutes of your time without a mechanic.
There are many small fixes you can do yourself for your vehicle. There is not always a need to call us right away. But, if the job looks confusing or if you are unsure of yourself, please make sure to give us a call even with a small job. It is better to have even a small job done right than an accident causing significant damage.
If there is one thing almost everyone can agree on, it is that green tech is the future of automobiles and energy. It is amazing how the luxury automobile industry is innovating in several areas this “charge to a better charge.” We at Luxury Auto Works are big fans of the environment and keeping it protected. Thankfully, so are many of our customers and a large part of Austin, Texas in fact. With this in mind, we love to keep people updated on what is on the horizon in green energy.
Green Charging Stations
Electric Car Charger
The first new big deal we are going to look at is the new Porsche charging station. The charger is a beast with its concept of “Turbo Charging.” The new charging technology gives 250 miles, of range in roughly an hour. Once the voltage level increases to 800V, the charging time will come down to less than 20 minutes for the same distance coverage.
Battery technology also continues to improve. Lexus is catching eyes with their CT and ES hybrids for those who have a love for the power and comfort. It manages to do this while being environmentally friendly at the same time. The BMW i3 has also caught a lot of attention with its futuristic design and 81 mile capacity on a single charge performance battery. Yet, there is also a lot of promise from the Tesla High-Performance Battery. While this is a closely guarded secret on exactly what is to be expected, the partnership with researcher Jeff Dahn shows promise. As a bonus, Tesla is also promising to bring us electric commercial transport trucks with Megacharger stations. The Tesla semi is going to be an impressive site to see. It will not be long before you see one on the road your self.
Analysis software can fix thousands of micro problems
Last, we bring you power analysis software. With diagnostics getting better and better every year, power analysis software is a technology we here at Luxury Auto Works can’t wait to get our hands on. The ability to process more and more information, we can further test smaller and smaller areas of entire systems to monitor for micro inefficiencies. It would be possible to analyze hundreds or even thousands of points on a vehicle for inefficiency. Pending problems even in the near future can be solved before they even occur! This can be used to calibrate countless ways to save energy in your car down to the emission of light by your gauges.
All in all, the future appears to be bright green for the automobile industry. We are excited to see the day when electric vehicles are far more common on the road. With more and more advancements every year, it is an exciting thing to follow. It is equally as exciting seeing the luxury car makers such as Lexus, Mercedes, and BMW stepping up to become leaders in the field.
First, remember the obvious, remember to lock your vehicle, park in open, well-lit areas, and keep your valuables in the trunk or at least out of window sight.
Popular Theft Deterrents
Car alarms are the most common defense for your luxury vehicle. While car alarms can be beaten, the idea behind an alarm as a deterrent is that most thieves would prefer not to call attention to themselves. Just seeing that red light blinking, or the stickers on the windows are often enough. Sometimes, just the alarm going off will cause them to flee.
Steering wheel locks are simple but effective. But, a steering wheel lock does not protect your stereo or other valuables. Besides, even the most robust steering wheel lock can be broken, but this takes time so they can be useful but limited deterrents.
Tire deflators are designed to deflate your car tires if they aren’t taken off before driving the car. This causes several problems. First, it does not stop the theft, and only further damages the car when it is discovered, and if you forget to remove them, you end up with a big problem on your hands.
Parts etching is another deterrent that does not help much but can help after the fact. The EIN is inscribed on windows and other parts of the car making the part known to be stolen even if stripped and placed on another vehicle. However, by this point, it does you no real good, it just makes thieves easier to catch.
Wheel locks are similar to the boots used by parking enforcement. When you park, you install the wheel lock, and this prevents a thief from jumping in and driving away.
LoJack and vehicle AI are often excellent anti-theft devices. Having cars that can notify the police the vehicle is stolen without resulting in a chance or further damage to the car is beneficial, but as noted, this also does not stop a break in.
Dash cameras. As we saw in our social media post, an in-dash camera is excellent! It will film the thief during the break-in so we can show their face all over social media and to the police to help catch them. It also serves as a source of humiliation for the person who refuses to get a job.
The future of anti-theft is sure to get better with AI and self-driving cars. We look forward to the day when the thief breaks into a car to steal it, the vehicles AI learns it is taken and locks the doors, drives to the police station playing Nicklebacks This Is How You Remind Me on full blast repeat for hours on end until the thief ends the standoff begging to be thrown in jail.
Until then, please feel free to stop by or call us for all your security questions and needs, we can help you out with a variety of services to boost the security of your luxury vehicle. We are always happy to help you stay safe, it is our main job.
The first thing you should do is clean and inspect your car. Not only do road trips get your car very dirty, so it is good to start off fresh. A clean vehicle on the outside helps you inspect for any damage before the trip in case there are any chips or damage during a long drive. Cleaning will also give you a chance to check your lights, brakes, etc. while you are cleaning.
Before you start packing the first thing you should do is double check your safety equipment. Make sure your first aid kit is stocked. Check your spare tire, and you have your jack, flares and everything else you need ready. Now is also a time to add a couple of gallons of distilled water to your emergency supplies. In the event of a breakdown, you may need water to last you several hours. Choose distilled water so you can use it to top off your battery or radiator in a pinch.
Now comes the time to pack. If you are new to trips, it is a good idea to keep in mind you will need half the destination items you think you will need. Also, you will need double the actual trip items you think you need.
Often when people pack for a trip, they want to have every possible situation covered. Seasoned vacationers know this never happens. Bring clothes according to your plans. No more. There is no need to bring your tux unless you are going on a road trip to have dinner with the President. Besides, often you buy clothes on trips, be it souvenir shirts, or a beautiful dress you found while killing time. After all, it is a vacation! Worst case scenario, you can use hotel laundry services or a laundromat. A laundromat is not a time killing alternative as it sounds, plan to do laundry while eating lunch nearby. A week-long trip, most people can get along fine with four to five days of clothes and a round of washing. There is no need for seven outfits for seven days with three backups for different weather and formal attire in case you get invited to the prom during your trip to the beach. Fit as much of all these things as possible in the trunk, with a blanket or two for overnight driving.
Occupy Your Time
Finally, before you leave, you want the actual road trip supplies. Here you ignore the half rule and follow the double standard! Bring twice as many books on tape, food, drinks, toys and other things you think you will need for the trip. Trust me, you do not want to sit through 53 Sherlock Holmes cases and 411 poems of Edgar Allen Poe. I guarantee you, this will not happen. You will likely never use half of your selections, and not make it through the other half. Your music playlist should be extensive since you will not be in the mood for many songs. Also, you will drink more soda and eat more chips than usual if for no other reason than pure boredom. Load up. And for the love of god, keep the children entertained! Stuff as many toys as you can fit. Load up on your data plan, buy some apps and fill your Netflix download queue with movies. Do whatever you have to do to make sure they have entertainment, you will not regret it.
These tips should keep you ready for any road trip this summer, or any summer. Local Austin trips or outside of Texas, you will be prepared. Remember, if you are not feeling too sure about your car’s performance, stop by Luxury Auto Works and have us look under your hood before you go. You never can be too safe.
