Well, that is a wrap, it has been a wacky runway season for Fashion Week and the trends are just as crazy as the runways themselves for the season. A few memorable moments of the week were Phillipp Plein’s futuristic winter runway stage which happened to be the most elaborate runway compared to other brands and Alexander Wang created a throwback runway show with her reference to an 80’s office setting, Wang showcases “Boss Lady,” collection that speaks to the 80’s time when women first emerged into the workforce and became the real “Boss.” There were many stand out moments through the week and we can see those fashion designers are always innovating, recycling old trends to create newer ones.

Here are a few trends to look out for this year; Forget about the 90’s, we are bringing back the 80’s

Yes, the 80’s are back and it’s a bold one! Throughout the runways, there was a common theme dedicated to the 80’s. What is the 80’s without the bold neon colours. Designers such as Prada, Marc Jacobs, Moschino, Mulberry, and Burberry incorporated as many rainbow colours as they could in their show. From oversized neon jackets to neon accessories – it was an adjustment everyone had to make to their eyes. Neon colours did not just stop there, the 80’s trends continued with animal print, hair accessories like scrunchies, velour tracksuits, and shoulder pads, all took place on many runways.

New York FASHION WEEK FEBRUARY 2018

New York FASHION WEEK FEBRUARY 2018

Watch out for Violet

Pantone named “Ultra Violet,” termed as the colour of 2018. Several designers incorporated the colour into a few pieces such as Anna Sui who designed beautiful dress suits, coats and styled them with violet accessories. Not only is the colour such an intense cool tone but it represents a sense of imagination and visionary – for the future says, Pantone. Other designers following the trend are Burberry, Dior and Marc Jacobs.

Anna Sui

Multiple Handbags

How convenient would it be to have two bags and not feel bulky eh? This year’s runways were packed with not one but two handbags on a few models, from purses to fancy packs to backpacks, models walked up and down the runways featuring two handbags. Designers like Alexander Wang featured the opening of his runway with a model wearing two bags as well designers like Gucci, Channel and Dolcé & Gabbana had the same idea.

Big Prints, Bold Shapes & Clunky Patterns

Designers like Moschino, Calvin Klein, Burberry, Dior, Tory Burch and Michael Kors featured stunning mixtures of prints and patterns into their show. Shapes and sizes paired with bold vibrant colours to create eye-catching runway looks. Many common prints and patterns through the week were animal print, checks, plaids and big florals.

Tory Burch RTW Fall 2018

Romance

Whether it was necklines, long sleeves or long dresses a majority of the clothes had ruffles paired with sheer delicate fabrics making the models look elegant on the runway. Especially Tory Burch, her show featured the most elegant garden setting which definitely reflected on the clothing as well. Many white sheer ruffle dresses made an appearance as well as patterns and prints on shirts/dresses. Other designers include Ralph Lauren, Mulberry, Dior, Coach and Alexander Wang.

Tory Burch RTW Fall 2018

Feminine Trench Coats

Inspired by femininity, the trench coat is a standout trend and re-inventive of the classic trench coat by adding and creating shape/style to the structured coats. Almost every single runway featured a number of trench coats. Some of which are; Marc Jacobs, Oscar de La Renta, Salvatore Ferragamo, Max Mara, Zimmermann, Dolcé & Gabbana and Victoria Beckham. The iconic coat is a must-have staple piece in your wardrobe for this season and be sure to look out for that feminine touch to the coats.

Tory Burch RTW Fall 2018

Super High Waisted Pants

Like high-waisted was not enough, runways like Tommy Hilfiger, Noon by Noor and Marc Jacobs had clean-cut dress pants that really emphasized the silhouette of a woman. Having the pants be extra high-waisted made models looks taller than they already are and created the illusion of a slimmer taller look. Another must-have wardrobe item in your closet for the season.

Animal Print

A super prevalent FW trend was animal print as it was featured in 70-80% of the weeks. From Max Mara, Tom Ford, Victoria Beckham to Phillipp Plein, all showcased various forms of animal prints. Now it isn’t your typical leopard print but also snakeskin, tiger, and zebra. It was almost a safari runway show and many designers mixed in different prints with others to create a new look.

Broad Shoulders

Remember when shoulder pads were not acceptable in your wardrobe? Well, re-consider the style since it is a huge trend this season. Many designers like Tom Ford, Alexander Wang, Prada, Gucci and Marc Jacobs managed to pull off the odd style. Especially Marc Jacobs who featured it from beginning to end intense bold colours & broad shoulders and not to mention how oversized they were. Additionally, many power suits featured broad shoulders for a trendy new silhouette.

Tom Ford RTW Fall 2018

Let’s hit the slopes

A lot of ski-inspired outfits were featured across the runway from puffer jackets, moon boats and snow suites – expect to be ready & trendy for the ski days to come. Jeremy Scott, Phillipp Plein, and even Alexander Wang created ski outfits to die for. If you are bold enough to wear these styles like these well let’s just say you will be the star of the slope.

I started practicing yoga because I was genuinely concerned about my health at a very early age. Growing up my parents always inculcated the habit of eating healthy and staying fit so that kind of influenced me to always stay on top of my diet and wellness regime. To be honest, I initially portrayed yoga to be only for people who are recovering from an injury or for those who just want to stretch or relax. It never crossed my mind that practicing yoga would be one of the most challenging things I could put myself through. Even more challenging than your usual gym routine.

What pushed me towards Yoga?

I remember my parents dragging me to my first yoga class in the name of family bonding time and boy did I find SO boring. Little did I know I would end up turning a yoga teacher… After a few classes over 6 months or so, I found my body craving the calmness I felt after practicing yoga and how I started noticing little things in my body that I wouldn’t not usually pay much attention to. In a nut shell I was able to prevent my body from several injuries. Going for one or two classes in a month was still not enough for me to call it a regular practice. After moving to Toronto to complete my Masters, I found myself getting burnt out often, not eating the right foods and even having this lingering feeling of being lethargic all the time. And mind you this was inspite of me exercising on a regular basis (2 to 3 times a week). I remember complaining about it to my parents and they immediately advised me to start practicing yoga again.

Here’s how I did it

Now here I am with my mind boggling engineering workload, balancing family and friends and more importantly keeping up with events and posts on Kfashionstop. Bottom line is I let stress get to me once again. A couple of weeks later, I had enough of it and decided to concentrate on my mind & body wellness. With so many types of yoga and meditation techniques out there I found it difficult to understand what should I even be doing? Every morning, I started my day with a few stretches. Forward folds, side stretches to even just breathing. With my body tight as ever, I did not let that dampen my spirit. I pushed myself to do this for me. After a couple of months of figuring out my own sort of yoga sequence and a ton of reading, I was able to find that head space and calmness in everything I did during the day. I found myself getting less irritable, I was able to balance my social life and moreover, not get stressed out. That’s when I made it my mission to talk about the significance of yoga and the positive impact it has had on my life and I want to share that with you because I do not want anyone to feel the way I did when stressed.

If you are someone who is on a budget and cannot afford to join a yoga studio, that should not stop you from learning more about yoga and practicing. Yoga is something you can even practice at the luxury of your own home. There are so many e-books out there that cater to beginners or any level for that matter. If you are keen on starting today, check out my e-book here. If you are injured or pregnant please consult your doctor before taking it upon yourself to practice.

Here’s how you can make a change starting today
  1. To help with clearing your mind, download a mediation app – spend 5 to 10 minutes in the morning or right before going to bed. Some of my suggestions are The Mindfulness App, Headspace and Calm.
  2. Either sign yourself up at a yoga studio or use an e-book for beginners (theyogic) to get started.
  3. Practice about 2 to 3 times a week to see the difference sooner. I would recommend trying out various forms of yoga to see what your body is most comfortable with. Again it’s not a race or a competition to see how soon this can bring a positive change to you instead use your practice time to listen to yourself. Your body is your temple and if you cannot treat it with love and respect, then do not expect others to do so too.
  4. Every time you find yourself in a situation where you hurt someone, apologize and ask what you can do to make things better. If you are in a situation where someone else has caused harm to you, let it go. Holding on to such anger and hate will not change anything. When you are meditating, us this time to send positive energy and thoughts to that person.
  5. SMILE. When I find myself in a situation where I feel the world’s burden is sitting on my shoulders, I force myself to smile. It’s shocking to notice how our minds change instantly and release endorphins. To read more about this, click here.

You can always DM me on Instagram (@kfashionstop) or send me an email (karen@kfashionstop.com) if you have any questions or concerns about starting yoga or if you are confused about something. I’m here for you!

So, since my mum has arrived, I finally got the help to build myself new wardrobes which we all know means finding wardrobe gems you have not seen in a while. This got me thinking…instead of having these items just lying in my closet why not share them with you guys?! After much thought and research, I found MCouture (a Canadian online platform that sells high quality second-hand goods) to sell some of my items from my Kfashionstop collection. The first item being sold are my oh-so-chic Vesper sunglasses from Quay Australia. Remember Shay Mitchell‘s collaboration with Quay? If you don’t know what I am ranting about, they are a pair of must-have sunglasses to your collection. I have way too many to keep holding on to! They can be pulled off in almost every occasion, cocktail party, wedding, casual brunch with your gals and so on!

Why shop at MCouture?
  • MCouture is 100% Canadian, which means no additional fees charged to you because of USD conversion! Plus it’s a local, Canadian-made company.
  • MCouture is super easy, fast and simple to use! Only quality items are sold on the website, which means you know you are getting only HQ items!
  • Also for those interested in selling your own items, it is an easy, fun way to give the items you’re no longer reaching for, a second life and a second home! Not only do you make money out of it, but you also get to see someone enjoying one of the items that was just sitting in your closet!
How it works?

So how does this tie to #BRINGBACKASMILE (you can read more about the campaign below)?

I have listed out the retail price I bought the item at and the price I am selling it at. I’m going to be super transparent here, the amount paid by you gets split two ways; 1) 15% of the amount goes MCouture and 2) the rest gets added to my account, plus shipping. The amount I receive, I plan to transfer to Charity Water, an organization that supports communities that are in need of water. There are so many individuals that pass away due to a basic necessity like water and it saddens to me to think, here I have more than what I want and I am beyond grateful for but I would like to help communities that suffer.

Below, you will find the item sold on Mcouture.com Item 1 –  Vesper Sunglasses

Keep your wardrobe fresh and be part of this sustainable fashion movement by giving your old clothes and accessories a second life.

Campaign Brief: #BringBackASmile

Many of us have no idea what it’s like to be thirsty. We have plenty of water to drink — even the water in our washrooms is clean! Unfortunately, many people around the world do not have that luxury. Every day, about 1,400 children die from diseases caused by unsafe water and poor sanitation. But it does not have to be that way. There are simple solutions like drilled wells, spring protections and BioSand filters that help provide clean water to communities around the world.

I started this fundraising campaign to help charity: water build these types of projects around the world, and I’m looking for anyone who can help me support this cause. 100% of the money will be used to build clean water projects, and when they are complete, charity: water will send us photos and GPS coordinates so we can see the exact community we helped.

Here is how you can help out!

Anything you can share will help a child in need!

Until next time,

xoxo

So, since my mum has arrived, I have finally gotten around to re-doing my wardrobes and I found so many items from my Kfashionstop collection that I do not use. I decided why not get you guys to choose items you like at a much lower price than when I bought them. I picked out several items of clothing and accessories that I have barely worn once. Instead of tossing these items out, I prefer you, friends, to check it out.

I have listed out the retail price I bought the item at and the price I am selling it at. I’m going to be super transparent here, the amount paid by you gets split two ways; 1) 15% of the amount goes MCouture and 2) the rest gets added to my account, plus shipping. The amount I receive, I plan to transfer to an organization that supports communities that are in need of clothing, especially now that winter is coming up. There are so many individuals that pass away due to not being properly equipped for the winter and it saddens to me to think, here I have more than what I want and I am beyond grateful for but I would like to help communities that suffer.

Below, you will find the item I have put up to be sold on Mcouture.com Item 1 –  Vesper Sunglasses

Most of us know that our body is 70% water. But did you know that a proper pH balance is as important to your body and overall health as staying hydrated? The chances are – your water is missing something. Many of water’s natural health benefits are leached away by municipal water treatment systems and bottled-water processing that reduce essential minerals and lowers the pH level of water, often making it acidic. Santevia balances your water by reducing acidity and restoring its natural pH balance. Their products are geared to inspire people to transform their lives through the benefits of balanced water. When I first moved to Canada, the water I drank was straight from the tap and overtime I realised how much salt residue that would collect. To think that’s entering my body, certainly freaked me out. Santevia doesn’t just filter water, it also puts important minerals back into the water, making it alkaline. Shaking (“rocking”) your water bottle with a Power or Recovery stick has the same effect as water flowing through a natural mountain stream picking up essential minerals as it travels.

Why the Alkaline way?

Your body works hard to maintain a healthy balance between acid (lower on the pH scale) and alkaline (higher on the pH scale), helping your systems operate efficiently. When there is an imbalance due to stress, lack of sleep, and over consumption of acidic foods (such as sugar, processed foods and alcohol) your body has to work harder to maintain its optimal pH level. How? By reaching for the alkalizing minerals it needs to counter the higher levels of acid. Unfortunately, these minerals are leached from your bones, organs and tissues. This depletion of resources, combined with the fact that viruses, fungus, yeast and bacteria thrive in acidic environments, opens the door to imbalance and disease in the body.

Many people are choosing to consume more alkaline foods and drinks to help their bodies maintain a healthy pH balance. In fact, the World Health Organization recommends consuming mineralized water for the maintenance of optimal health.

Choose Santevia Power stick

The Santevia POWER Stick is a masterpiece of unpressurized filtration technology. Water filtered through it meets or exceeds NSF/ANSI Standard 42 for chlorine reduction, taste, and odour. The stick improves taste, reduces chlorine levels between 90% and 99% – adds essential minerals – raises pH – reduces damaging Oxidation Reduction Potential! – is an eco friendly choice – each one can prevent 300 single-use water bottles from entering landfills.  I absolutely love the fact that it is so light in weight, portable and convenient to travel with.  Most of you are probably thinking  the same thing I thought when I first got my hands on it…the filter life? One stick is good for  48 gallons / 180 liters (~750k 8 oz. glasses) • 3 months of eight, 8 oz. glasses/day.

How to use the power water stick?
  1.  Activate the Santevia POWER Stick by submerging it into bottle or glass.
  2. Shake or stir for 30 seconds.
  3. Water will reach optimal pH and chlorine reduction within 3-5 minutes. It’s that simple!

I recently traveled to one of the most exciting cities of all time, New York City! A timeless city some may say. It seems like I have subconsciously set a yearly trip to Manhattan and still cannot get enough of it! Even after visiting  New York for 3 summers in a row, I finally made it to Brooklyn for the first time. Friends, it has got to be my new favourite hangout spot. From records stores to dinner date-worthy spots such as 21 Greenpoint (which also happens to be Bill Murray’s son’s restaurant – how cool is that?!), Brooklyn is the new ‘it’ area for millennials to kick back and have fun. All in all, it was a lovely trip and I cannot wait to dig up new spots like that to check out in the years to come. It has been a while since I have shared an outfit post so here is a look for a date night or a cocktail gathering. If you have been following me on social media recently, you would know how much I am in awe of this Coach x Selena Grace bag. It is a poppy red that shouts be bold and confident girls.

This fitting satin dress I picked up from Urban Outfitters on6th Avenue (Manhattan). Fun story – I still remember it pouring outside when my boyfriend decided he needs a rain jacket from Urban Outfitters. It was the closest clothing store we had around us. And well, what do you know…30 minutes later I found this perfect fit nude satin dress. Boy was I excited we ran into this store!

Of late, one of the biggest questions that keep coming my way is ‘What do I do to prevent hair loss?’. This is a sensitive topic for so many men and women. Suffering from hair loss can be quite frustrating/embarrassing (to some) especially if it’s happening to you at a much younger age than expected. Research states that at least 50% of women suffer from hair loss. Those are some pretty serious stats. Other than genetics (which you can’t stop from happening) there are several things you can do to help keep your hair healthy. We live in a chemically prone and heat treated world when it comes to our hair. Which let’s face it is your hair’s worst nightmare. There have been times where I sit on the salon chair watching those fumes rising while the hairdresser straightens my hair. Scary. Internally, I’m screaming stop! But hey it gets the look you want right?

That’s the problem here, we live momentarily. Unfortunately, our hair is something we cannot or rather takes a long time to fix. That could be due to several factors; time of the year (everyone goes through a shredding season once a year), quality of water is not good in Dubai (wash it less), leave your hair to air dry (using a dryer weakens your roots – women are much more likely than men to see their doctor about thinning hair first (53% vs. 26%)), iron deficiency tends to increase hair loss. In cities, hard water is the major cause of hair loss. It contains high amounts of magnesium, silica and calcium, which lead to breakage, dryness and thinning of hair. Hard water also leads to dandruff and destroys your hair follicles.

Mentioned below are some of the things I do regularly to keep my hair healthy.

My recommendations: Biotin vitamins for your hair

Even though we think we are gaining enough nutrients from the foods we eat, it’s not enough! For most of us, our diets tend to vary on a daily basis which as a result our bodies miss out on various vitamins. Hair and nails bring one of the main ones.

Heena application

Once a month – strengthens your roots and makes it thicker. Add coffee for a brown tinge and tea for a red tinge. There are other forms of heena that you can use such as a non-colour heena which gives you the same results.

Use heat protection spray to avoid hair thinning

I currently use Tresemme from Shopper’s Drug Mart.

Coconut or Argan hair oil

Apply either oil at least once in two to three weeks. Your scalp needs the moisture especially with winter coming up!

Speaking of hair, I’ve also listed below my favourite brands and hair accessories trending this season! Hair trends this season

Jennifer Behr – Eugenia Kim – Mrs. President & Co. – Chan Luu – Namrata Joshipura – Lulu Frost – Kitsch – Ben-Amun – Deepa Gurnani – By Lilla
