KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL/KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL - A MALAYSIAN FOOD & TRAVEL BLOG

We have gotten a lot of compliments on Asher’s head shape and I have to thanks Mimos Pillow for that. It is a medical grade pillow designed specially by doctors, neurosurgeon and physiotherapist to reduce the pressure under the head, in order to prevent and correct flat head syndrome.

What is Flat Head Syndrome?

It occurs when a flat spot develops on the back or side of a baby’s head.. It’s very common, and studies found it affects almost 50% of newborns aged 7 -12 weeks old.

Plagiocephaly is the most common type and occurs when the head is flattened on one side, causing it to look asymmetrical and distorted. For example, the ears may be misaligned and when seen from above the head, looks like a parallelogram.

What causes Flat Head Syndrome?

Babies are born with soft heads to allow for the amazing brain growth that occurs in the first year of life. Flat head syndrome usually happens when a baby sleeps in the same position most of the time. The pressure can cause positional flat head.

If the situation hasn’t improved by 6 months a lot of paediatricians will recommend a flat head helmet.

Can Mimos Pillow Helps?

Mimos Pillow is so expensive, does it help? Yes and yes and yes for us – just look at Asher’s head shape! Definitely a worthy investment for newborns. This medical grade baby pillow is designed and manufactured in Spain. It provides 4x less pressure, protecting baby’s soft head from flattening on the back or side of the head. You can also refer to a lot of before and after result here on their Facebook Page and Instagram Account.

Asher tends to sleep on his right more, but the beauty about the pillow is, the baby can sleep on any side without need to reposition the direction of the head.

Asher has been sleeping on Mimos Pillow since the first few days of his life at the confinement centre. Initially we were quite worried about SIDS risk because very often we have been told that bedding such as thick blankets, quilts, and pillows can block an infant’s airway and hence increase the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). However, Mimos Pillow’s material 100% breathable & certified safe. I tried planting my face onto it and I can still breathe (don’t have to thank me, son)

TUV Certifies that this product is safe to be used with babies as there is enough air flow through the body of the pillow to allow normal baby breaths even when the baby lies face down on the pillow.

The pillow is also made of 100% soft and flexible 3D spacer fabrics, giving babies a comfortable sleep. It is recommended to wash the pillow once or twice monthly for hygienic purposes. I just put it into a laundry net and machine wash it. It dries so quickly too!
Mimos Pillow comes in 5 different sizes for every stage of baby’s growth. You just need to measure your baby’s head circumference to determine the size for your baby. How do you check if the pillow fits your baby?

1. There shouldn’t be too much sunken space around baby’s head. Baby’s head should fit the dimple just right.

2. Baby’s shoulder shouldn’t be on top of the pillow.

3. There shouldn’t be a gap under baby’s shoulder

If you suspect that your baby has flat head syndrome, you can always DM Mimos Pillow on instagram or email them at info@mimospillow.my to make appointments for free consultation. During the session, they will measure and assess the severity of your baby’s flat head condition and see if Mimos Pillow could still help. In most cases, early discovery and hence early use of the pillow leads to positive outcome.

The person in charge from Mimos Pillow told us that Asher has very nice head shape – balanced left and right, and a close to perfect scoring of 85.7%

The purpose of the ratio is to gauge whether Mimos Pillow and Positional Treatment is still relevant and effective. They will suggest you to refer to your paediatrician for more severe cases.
A  baby is going to be sleeping a a-lot each day and that is why you will have to make sure they are kept in the right environment. For flat head pillow, the best results are experienced when it is used from the very first day of life and especially before the baby hits 6 months of age.

Apart from relying on the pillow, tummy time while awake and supervised – a little bit every day starting from birth – can help strengthen neck muscles, and provide time off the back and sides of the head. Altering the position of baby while awake (holding, or in a carrier) is also helpful.

KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL/KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL - A MALAYSIAN FOOD & TRAVEL BLOG

The shabu shabu dining experience originates from Japan, where thin slices of beef is being swish to and froth in pots of boiling clear konbu and dashi soup. Recently, we found a favourite place for shabu shabu in KL – Shabu Gion. Unlike other Malaysianised shabu shabu places with fish balls and mock meat, Shabu Gion offers us a truly Japanese swish swish experience with delicious MSG free broth and fresh ingredients.

The best thing without a doubt is the atmosphere and prompt, friendly service. The wood-lined interior evoke a calm and tranquil feeling.

Another plus point is Shabu Gion offers custom-fitted soup pots for each customer. These customised pots are powered by electricity and they will switch off automatically after the soup has boiled for some time.

The chilli, special sauces and various toppings served with the dishes also worth a mention.

The homemade sauces are so flavourful, especially the spicy one! It has just enough kick to complement the fresh ingredients.

Shabu Gion takes pride in their soup base such as the premium mala soup, premium king crab soup, spicy miso soup, clear chicken soup and wintermelon soup. From clear and light soup base to something spicy and flavourful – there is something for everything.

I opted for the wintermelon soup that is light, tasty and comforting.

KampungBoy loves his spicy miso soup too. It has that deep and rich umami flavour.

The premium meat platter (RM 52.90) that consists of New Zealand beef ribeye, Australian beef striploin, New Zealand lamb and pork shoulder is perfect for couples or small families. You get to try all 4 cuts of high quality meat in small quantity.

I was delighted to see my favourite special ring roll here. I love dipping them into broth in order to enjoy the semi crunchy and soft texture. Gion Signature Fish Paste, as well as the fish balls and pork balls platter were great too! The fish paste is freshly made from scratch with minimal ingredients – mainly fish.

The Premium Pork Bacon Slice (RM 56.90) is not only visually appealing, but tastes good too. It has the perfect lean to fat ratio, and goes really well with our shabu shabu broth.

The Seafood Platter (RM 79.90) serves up generous portion of king prawns, fresh squid, snapper fish and half shell scallops. The freshness of the seafood is indisputable, especially the king prawns with firm and bouncy textures.

The vegetables are just as important as the meat because it adds natural sweetness to the broth that you will gratefully sip at the end of the meal. The selection of vegetables and mushrooms at Shabu Gion is really fresh. We had the Garland Chrysanthemum (Tong Ho, RM 10.90), radish (RM 9.90) and shiitake (RM 19.90).

Don’t forget ‘shime’, meaning ‘the end’ in Japanese. For shabu shabu, shime means adding rice or noodles to the leftover broth because it would be a shame to let the most flavourful broth goes to waste. We added some yee mee instead of traditional udon and it was equally delicious.

We really enjoyed our meal at Shabu Gion. The quality of food and preparation was impeccable and it was a great experience. The price point is a little bit higher than your normal buffet shabu shabu restaurants, but you get what you paid for. However, they do offer sets at reasonable pricing, for example the deluxe shabu set for 2 starts from RM 63.90.

KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL/KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL - A MALAYSIAN FOOD & TRAVEL BLOG

The best of the best hotels make you feel warmly welcomed wherever you are in the world. We are referring to our recent staycation at Four Seasons Kuala Lumpur.  We were blown away by their customer service, friendly atmosphere and incredible dining. Most of the staffs that we have encountered go above and beyond to ensure that we have a nice stay.

For example, we were being ushered to the executive lounge for check-in. While checking in, the friendly staff played with Asher and even gave him a soft toy.

The staffs also assisted us to our Club Premiere Park-View Room. I’m in love with the floor-ceiling windows that allow us to take in the best KLCC Park and the fountains view! The room comes with privileged access and the comforts of the Executive Club Lounge too.

The room has more than ample space even with an addition of baby cot (later). It is definitely designed with comfort and functionality in mind.

Our five month old little boss has no problem adapting to a new environment, especially in a room with crisp, cool sheets and soft, fluffy pillows. We were glad that he slept so well in the baby cot.

The housekeeping staff also sent us some baby toiletries products and bathtub without asking. Now, that’s what I call customer service!

The room comes with a phenomenal marble bathroom, complete with bath tub, walk-in shower, vanity sink and automatic washlet.

The mini bar is well stocked with snacks and beverages. If you need your daily caffeine fix, there’s a coffee machine with complimentary coffee capsules for you. Tea lover like KampungBoy enjoyed his cup of tea too.

The outdoor pool has the best view overlooking the city and the lounge chair is the most comfortable, as you can see from our sleeping baby.

The Executive Lounge offers breakfast, afternoon tea, evening cocktails all-day refreshments, complete with access to private meeting rooms, concierge services and a range of premium business services. I got to enjoy a great varieties of wines from the wine dispenser too!

All executive hotel lounges are not created equal. Some offer plentiful food and beverage choices while some can be extremely basic, but the one at Four Seasons is definitely one of the best.

KampungBoy was delighted to see his favourite pasembur as part of the spread. It was really delicious, best with a glass of white.

We moved to the outdoor deck that has quite a view of the city skyline.

Our baby enjoyed all the attention that he has been getting from FSKL’s friendly staffs.

We called it a night soon after, accompanied by this  mesmerising and uninterrupted view of the capital.

FSKL prides itself on culinary creativity and offers an amazing breakfast spread at Curate, an all-day restaurant.T he tempting buffet spread includes the very best of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Continental cuisine. A lot of the items are cooked ala minute too!

All in all, we really enjoyed our stay in FSKL, so much so that we hardly ventured out from the hotel. What a great staycation experience!

Guests can make a reservation by dialling +603 2382 8888. For more information about the hotel, please visit www.fourseasons.com/kualalumpur‎

KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL/KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL - A MALAYSIAN FOOD & TRAVEL BLOG

Tangerine @ The Face Suites KL is definitely one of the most underrated fine dining restaurants in KL. How do we justify this bold statement?

1. This rooftop fine dining restaurant is located on the Sky Deck (Level 51) of THE FACE Suites that comes with views that promise to take your breath away.

2. The kitchen is led by Chef Siti Arini, an award winning chef who utilises sophisticated cooking techniques and fresh, seasonal ingredients to create modern European dishes, sometimes with a local twist. The menu changes every three months and patrons can choose from  4, 6, 8-course dinner menu as well as a 6-course vegetarian set dinner menu.

3. A 6-course set dinner is reasonably priced at RM 438 nett per person. Apart from the 6 courses featured in this menu, our dinner opens with an assortment of amuse-bouche – at least 6-7 types. Each and every courses showcase chef’s culinary prowess and personality.

The very first food served is warm bread, simply irresistible with some decadent truffle butter.

Chef continues to whet our appetite in preparation for the upcoming courses with these amuse-bouche(s). These beautiful, bite-size surprise delights almost all the senses.

The first course was a Grilled Australian Avocado dish with yuzu granita, caramelised walnut and organic kale. Love the textural contrasts of crunchy and creamy, warm and cool.

Double Boiled Curry Bean Consomme

Then it was a choice of Seared Hokkaido Scallop with noisette sesame, dun pea oil, compressed green pear or Double Boiled Curry Bean Consomme with Japanese wagyu carpaccio, flying fish roe, radish relish. Both dishes have done justice to the beautiful fresh ingredients.

Seared Hokkaido Scallop

Pan Fried Foie Gras

Third course was a choice between Cured Moulard Duck or Pan Fried Foei Gras. Seared until golden brown, the foei gras has a brown crust and custard-like medium rare centre – paired so well with the perfect cranberry brioche (I asked the chef if she sells in loaf!), portobello and porcini duxelle and fungi veloute.

The Cured Moulard Duck (think duck proscuitto) was rich, fatty, deep in color and flavor. Well balanced with smoked leek capellini and truffle beurre blanc.

For mains, KampungBoy opted for the 300 Days Grain Fed Wagyu Cheek with braised leek, roasted parsnip, crisps, de la vera dust. It was incredibly tender, decadently melt-in-your-mouth, as a result of long braising hours. So good!

My 1/2 Maine Lobster that sits on a bed of saffron risotto topped with micro pea and crustacean kaffir lime cream was really fresh and succulent. My only gripe is the seasoning – a tad too salty for my likings.

Fifth course was a selection of fine cheese with chef home made raisin on vine, house baked croute, toasted wild nut and New Zealand honey comb.

Apart from using specially curated cheese with great quality, the chef also put in a lot of thoughts into the “sides”, something that we would like to applaud her for.

De Pavlova

Our stomachs are on the brim of bursting but we couldn’t say no to desserts. I love the pavlova with some twists – paired with jackfruit soy gelato, granola seed, rhubard ganache.

Chocolate Luxe with tangerine jello, opalys semifreddo, cuvee bali torte. Balanced taste of sweet and tart as silky smooth dark chocolate is enhanced with tangy tangerine jello and the delicate crunch of chocolate torte.

Bon Bon

There’s even home made madeleines to bring home.

Remember to take a walk to visit the most instagrammble swimming pool in KL to digest your meal, with Tangerine’s staff assistance as access card is needed. The pool is part of The FACE Suites hotel.

KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL/KAMPUNGBOYCITYGAL - A MALAYSIAN FOOD & TRAVEL BLOG

One of our top priorities is making sure that our little Asher is healthy, and hence happy. However sometimes there are certain genetic, metabolic, or infectious condition that couldn’t be prevented, but can be detected early for the best course of action.

This is why we have decided to give go for cord blood banking and to give our baby an extended newborn screening test called Metascreen.

What is Newborn Metabolic Screening?

It is a screening for every newborn for many harmful or potentially fatal metabolic disorders (also known as inborn errors of metabolism, or IEMs for short) that are not apparent at birth. An inborn error of metabolism (IEM) is a rare genetic disorder where the affected baby lacks certain enzymes that maintain normal bodily metabolic function, causing the build-up of toxic substances or deficiency of critical substances required for development.

Why Get Tested?

Newborn screening detects metabolic disorders that can cause developmental issues and lifelong complications such as mental retardation, physical disability and in some instances, death, if it is left untreated.

Scientific literature suggests that approximately 2-5% of newborns are affected by genetic disorders and congenital abnormalities which includes metabolic disorders. Although metabolic disorders are individually rare, but when taken cumulatively, the incidence rate is quite high.1

For example, in Malaysia, collectively about 1 in every 1,500 individuals is expected to be affected with a metabolic disorder.Screening your newborn will facilitate early treatment and prevent long term detrimental effects to your baby’s health.2

When Should My Baby Get Tested

Ideally, you should screen your baby between 2 to 7 days after birth. Although some severe metabolic disorders manifest very early, there are some inherited metabolic disorders that have late onset, or the affected individual may appear normal as long as there is no triggering events.

If your newborn baby has not yet been tested for metabolic disorders, it will still be beneficial for her to take Metascreen® test at 1-6 months of age to detect less severe variants of metabolic disorders and/or before she experiences triggering events, such as long period of fasting, or increase exposure to certain substances.

Our Experience

The kit for Metascreen was given to us prior to baby’s birth (the one in blue envelope). There were instructions on how to do it and also a paid postage envelope for us to send baby’s urine kit back. A day after I gave birth, we asked the help of the nurses in the hospital for urine collection. Our baby’s urine can be easily collected by inserting filter paper into the diaper without causing any harm or discomfort to him. They returned the kit to us and we posted it back to StemLife. As easy as ABC!

We then got the results 2 weeks after and and the results were negative. There is a little booklet that explains and teaches you how to interpret the result.

We are thankful and glad to know that our baby is healthy and free from all 100+ disorders!

For more information, please refer to https://www.metascreen.com.my/
