Common Phrasal Verbs for IELTS

Phrasal verbs present a whole new world of English speaking opportunities. Phrasal verbs are words which give verbs a completely different meaning. They are often used in everyday English conversation, so to know about them becomes all the more important.

Usually, phrasal verbs consist of 2 words, verb + adverb or verb + preposition. Some phrasal verbs also consist of 3 words. Phrasal verbs should not be memorised but studied as they come across you in daily English conversation.

The two words in a phrasal verb, i.e. verb + adverb need to but used together, for example, “fall down” but in some cases, you can separate the verb and adverb by using other words in between them. For example, turn off can be used as “It was a bad movie. It really turned me off“.

Another important point to remember while using phrasal verbs is that the verb part of the sentence can be altered depending on the tense of the sentence.

Given below, are some of the most commonly used phrasal verbs in English communication. You can start using them to build up a good vocabulary for your IELTS exam attempt.

1) Bring up – to mention something (the verb & adverb in this phrasal verb can be separated)

e.g. John was sick and had to miss your birthday party, so please don’t bring it up. I don’t want him to feel bad for missing it.

2) Bring it on – to accept a challenge with confidence

e.g. You want to have a race? Bring it on!

3) Call off – to cancel something

e.g. The match was called off because of rain.

4) Cheer on – to support someone by giving them words of encouragement (the verb & adverb can be separated)

e.g. Even though Claire was in the last place, her sister cheered her on through the entire competition. 

5) Come up (with something) – to think of an idea

e.g. I came up with this idea for the school play about a woman living with her best friend & son. 

6) Come up – to bring up a topic, or when something happens unexpectedly

e.g. I wanted to tell him that I got a new job but the chance never came up.

e.g. I was going to a movie with my friends, but something came up so I had to cancel the plan.

7) Come across – to meet/find by chance

e.g. I was cleaning the room and I came across my old school uniform. 

8) Drop by/in – to stop by for a visit, for a short time

e.g. John is such a great friend when he heard that his friend had a fever he dropped by to bring him some fruits & soup.

9) Fill (someone) in – to give someone the details about something (usually separated by the person getting the filled in or information)

e.g. Quickly, let’s go! There’s no time to explain, I’ll fill you in on the way.

10) Get back to – to return to someone or something.

e.g. John’s assistant wasn’t sure what time the meeting was, so he said he’d get back to me with the time.

11) Get back at — to get revenge on someone.

e.g. Her ex-husband took her house so she got back at him by taking his dogs.

12) Take off — this phrase can mean to remove clothing, or to leave for a journey (i.e. planes take off when they begin their flights).

e.g. He was very happy when she finally got home and took off his shoes. 

13) Take out — to remove something, like from a pocket or a bag.

This phrase can also mean to take someone on a date. (Can be separated by the item or person being taken out.)

The phrase can also mean to remove someone, as in by killing them—but this is probably not something you would need to use in everyday conversation!

e.g. The children sat at their desks and took out their pens and paper.

e.g. He took her out to the most expensive restaurant in the city.

14) Work out — to exercise.

e.g. I try to work out every morning, by repeatedly lifting a heavy doughnut to my mouth.

15) Work (something) out — to come up with a solution or a compromise with someone.

e.g. Don’t worry, I’m sure we can work something out so that everyone is happy.

IELTS Academic Vocabulary requires a candidate to have a good collection of words for different contexts.

In this article, we will share some commonly used words in the context of education.

1. Concentrate

The word means ‘to direct or focus your attention towards a particular activity or a problem‘.

IELTS Speaking Test-tips to improve your pronunciation

IELTS Speaking Test can be a tough nut to crack if your pronunciation is not correct. For non-native English speakers, certain words can be difficult to pronounce correctly. Many people in India pronounce bread as braid, chewing gum as cheeingum, water as waater.

You can be in any part of the world if you are a non-native English speaker, pronunciation is a difficult skill to acquire and most of the times we overlook the need to learn the correct pronunciation skills. As a non-native English speaker, you will have a unique way/twang to pronounce certain words. On top of this, if you are appearing for IELTS Speaking Test, you will have difficulty in scoring higher.

So if you are facing issues in the way you pronounce words, don’t worry. By following the below-given tips you can easily improve your pronunciation skills.

  1. Speak! Don’t be shy!

If you want to improve your pronunciation, do not shy away from speaking whenever you get a chance to. Some people are introverts and might feel have some inhibitions while speaking in public, so start speaking with a close friend or a family member. It is always better to get a professional trainer for practice.

  1. Record yourself

Getting feedback is always helpful, but you are your best critic. Listen to an English sentence spoken by a native speaker and then record your voice while speaking the same sentence. You will be able to note the difference in your pronunciation.

  1. Imitate native speakers

Human beings learn primarily by imitating. Listen as much as you can to native English language speakers. You will learn to speak at a relaxed pace and observe how to intonate while pronunciation. Make a habit of listening to only English content, like English movies, English news, English music etc. Last but not least, make use of online dictionaries to check the word meaning and pronunciation of some difficult words in the English language.

  1. Learn and speak slowly

If you think that by speaking fast will make you a better English speaker, then you are wrong. It is not speaking fast but, speaking clearly and slowly reflects thought and confidence in your speech. If you need to think, slow down and give yourself a moment to think and restructure & rephrase your sentences.

  1. Break down the words

Practice breaking down certain words while speaking. This will reflect confidence and the examiner will be impressed by knowing that you really know what you’re saying.

  1. Focus on words that seem similar

Focus on certain words like way – weigh, wait-weight, address – address, read and read. The words sound similar but have a different meaning when used in a sentence. You should group such words so that you know the difference of where to stress and not stress for it to make sense to the listener.

  1. Practice by forming sentences

Pronunciation focuses on imparting important information through a sentence. This means that focusing on the right word in a sentence is also important. For example – ‘I particularly like reading books on ancient world history.’

IELTS tips are available in plenty on the internet. Before we dive into the must-know tips for IELTS, we would like to correct a lot of students with the way they pronounce the acronym for the International English Language Testing System. It is not ILTES, but IELTS (i-el-ts).

1) Understanding the criteria for assessment.

3)Paraphrasing is good

Don’t be afraid to paraphrase a sentence. Most candidates are afraid to paraphrase a sentence as trainers discourage them from doing it. On the contrary, if paraphrasing is done well, it can improve the structure of sentence drastically!

For example: John was famous for his oratory skiils.

Paraphrased as: John was well known for his oratory skills.

4)Use of connectors while writing & speaking

Connectors, also known as conjunctive words are defined as words that link two similar parts of a sentence. Thus, making the sentence structure more coherent.

There are four categories of connectors: (1) coordinating conjunctions, such as and or or, (2) subordinating conjunctions, such as ifso thatbecause or while, (3) correlating conjunctions such as neither… nor and (4) the fourth group of connectors consists of conjunctive adverbs such as therefore or however.

5)Practice planning the content

Conceptualizing, planning or brainstorming the content before you start writing and/or speaking can be of huge help. The skilful practice of content planning habit will save you a considerable amount of time while attempting writing and speaking sections in IELTS.

IELTS Speaking Test: Magical Tips and Important things to keep in mind while sitting in the IELTS Speaking Test 

Many candidates are scared of the Speaking Section of the IELTS Exam. But, it’s just a matter of proper practice and awareness about the IELTS Speaking Test. 

Let us throw some light on the things that you should keep in mind while preparing for the IELTS Speaking Section Which would make you more confident when you sit for the IELTS Exam. 

1) The first and the foremost thing is being aware of the timings, score and pattern of the IELTS Speaking test. The IELTS Speaking Test consists of the three parts: 

Part 1: Introduction 

In this part, the examiner asks you to introduce yourself, asks about your hobbies etc.  

Tip: It is recommended to give your answers in ‘Yes’ or ‘No’ first and then continue with an explanation. 

Part 2: In this part, the examiner will ask you to speak on a topic given in Task Card. You have to speak for 1-2 minutes on this topic. Most of the candidates find this part tough. The candidate will be given 1 minute to prepare and pen down their thoughts and then they can speak.  

Tip: Pen down the points may be in the form of words which will remind you while speaking and be natural while speaking. 

Part 3: This part is the discussion part. Here, you have to talk to the examiner for 3-4 minutes. This discussion could be on any topic, may be on the topic given in Part 2. 

Tip: Try to share some personal experiences on the topic. This would make the discussion more unique and you will also feel more comfortable with the examiner.  

2) The second thing to keep in your mind is to be unique and authentic. Don’t speak prepared answers that you might have prepared for any of your exams. Be spontaneous while speaking. When you speak prepared answers, the examiner will come to know and that will affect your score. 

3) The third thing to keep in mind is to vary your pitch while speaking and avoid speaking in a monotone. Varying your pitch while speaking makes you sound natural and you will also become more comfortable in your speech. 

4) The fourth thing to keep in your mind is the usage of good vocabulary. So, try learning new words every day and try using them in your daily speech, so that you sound natural and fluent while giving the IELTS Exam.  

5) The fifth thing to keep in mind is to keep calm and don’t panic while you commit any mistake while speaking. Keep calm and speak slowly. Don’t’ try to speak too fast. If you commit any mistake while speaking, correct it without being panic. This will show that you are aware of what you speak.  

6) The sixth thing to keep in mind is to ask again if you don’t understand the question. Yes, you can say “I am sorry, could you please elaborate?” 

7) The last thing is to take care of the grammar. Listen to the question carefully and be alert about the grammar used in the question.

IELTS Listening Section: Most Common Mistakes made by the candidates! 

IELTS Listening Section is quite tough for candidates who are from countries in which English is not spoken commonly. The candidates find it challenging when it comes to listen and understand English in different accents. In this test, the audio for listening is played only once so one should be very focused and should listen to the audio very carefully, even a little distraction can make you lose your marks. 

Let us now focus on the most common mistakes that candidates make during Listening Section of their IELTS Exam.

The problem in Listening and understanding the pronunciation  

When the audio is played, just stay focused! All your concentration should be there. Sometimes, it becomes difficult to understand the pronunciation of the person speaking in the clip in a particular accent. If you keep on thinking about the same word, you may result in failing to hear more words after that! Therefore, stay focused with all your concentration and avoid thinking about the single word even if you are unable to understand. 

Mistakes made during listening to similar sounding words:  

You may get confused with the similar sounding words (for example sea and see, pear and pair, would and wood) if you are not paying attention to the topic being discussed in the audio clip. So, stay focused and try to listen and understand as well. For this, practice as much as possible. Listen to Television News, Debates, Group Discussions and Talk shows and also try listening to sample audio clips and take mocks. Practice as much as you can! 

Mistakes made while transferring your Answers on ‘Answer Sheet’ 

When you are listening to the audio, write your answers on the question paper. You will get 10 minutes after you listen to the audio, to transfer all your answers on the ‘Answer Sheet’. So, again stay focused with all your concentration while transferring your answers on the Answer Sheet so you don’t even miss a single word. 

Red Instruction Carefully! 

One should read the Instructions carefully before attempting this section. If it is given in the instruction “Write in not more than two words”, then the Answer should be written in 2two words only otherwise you will lose all your marks for that! 

Don’t copy answers on the Answer Sheet during the gap between the sections. 

The Listening Test has Four Sections. In the starting of each section, Students are given some time to read instructions and look at the questions after that the actual audio is played. Candidates often make the mistake of copying answers on the Answer Sheet during a gap between the end of one section and beginning of other section. As this time is given to read the questions, so one commits a blunder by doing this mistake! You will get 10 minutes to transfer the answers on the ‘Answer Sheet. 

Sticking to your first thought! 

After writing an answer, candidates keep on thinking whether it is right or not. It is going to kill your time! So, stick to the first thought that came while writing your answer. 

Don’t feel Scared! 

It’s not possible for anyone to understand each and every word of the audio clip. So, don’t feel scared and nervous if you miss any word to understand. Being nervous would make you commit more mistakes. 

Last but not least, the key to crack this section is to keep practising, listen to the TV Talk Shows, take mocks and listen to the sample audios. Taking mock tests on the IELTS Listening Section will boost your confidence and you will be less nervous while sitting in the IELTS Exam.
