Introduction

Breast augmentation is the trendiest plastic surgery procedure in the US. According to the statistics provided by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, 279,143 breast augmentation procedures were performed in the US in 2015 alone. The procedure involves the use of breast implants or your own body fat to add projection and fullness to smaller or flatter breasts.

There are a number of factors that can lead to decrease in the size or volume of your breasts. These factors include genetics, pregnancy and breastfeeding, and weight loss. No matter what has caused your breasts to shrink, breast augmentation is an effective and reliable way to restore the fullness and shapeliness of your breasts.

There are two major options when it comes to augmenting your breasts through plastic surgery: breast implant surgery and autologous fat transfer. In this article, we’ll discuss both of these options in detail.

Breast implant surgery

Breast implant surgery involves the use of either silicone or saline implants to make the breasts fuller, voluminous, and shapelier. If your breasts are smaller, flatter, mildly saggy, or poorly shaped, you may qualify for this intervention.

Breast implants are prosthetic devices. Silicone breast implants are the most used implants in breast augmentation. The silicone implant is made of a silicone shell that is pre-filled with silicone gel. On the other hand, saline implants are less used. A saline implant is made of a silicone shell that is filled with saline solution after inserting the implant inside the breasts.

The breast implant surgery is an outpatient procedure that is performed under general anesthesia. If your health remains stable after the procedure, you may be allowed to go home. The surgery starts with the placement of incision on the breast. There are different incision techniques that can be used. Each type of incision comes with its own pros and cons. During the initial consultation, you should be sure to discuss with the surgeon the incision technique he plans to use.

Secondly, there are two options when it comes to placing the implants in your breasts. These options are under the pectoral muscle and above the pectoral muscle. The latter option is less preferred because it comes with more risks and disadvantages. It is always judicious to prefer placing the implant under the pectoral muscle where it can get sufficient tissue coverage.

After placing the breast implants in the intended place, the incisions will be closed and sutured. You will then be kept in a recovery area where your health will be monitored. If your health remains stable, you may be allowed to go home. Make sure to have someone drive you home because you will not be allowed to drive. The recovery period after breast implant surgery can range from 2-4 weeks. During this period, you must follow your surgeon’s instructions so you can have a safe and smooth recovery. Like all other surgeries, there are a number of risks and potential complications associated with breast implant surgery. Make sure to discuss them with the surgeon during the initial consultation.

Autologous fat transfer to the breasts

The second option of breast augmentation is the use of your own body fat to enhance your breasts. As compared to breast implants, the fat transfer surgery provides safer and natural outcomes. The use of your own body fat will provide a natural projection, contour, and movements to your breasts. Unlike implants, there is no risk of an immune reaction when your own body fat is used to augment your breasts.

The bad news is that autologous fat transfer procedure is not for everyone. The surgery uses your excess, unwanted body fat as donor fat to enhance your breasts. If you lack extra fat in your body, you will not qualify for the procedure. Instead, you should go for the breast implant procedure or gain weight to qualify for fat transfer.

The autologous fat transfer procedure starts with the removal of fat from fat donor sites in the body. Liposuction is used to remove the fat. The common fat donor sites include the abdomen, sides, flanks, back, and thighs.

The liposuction involves placing tiny incisions in each donor site. To make the process easier and painless, a tumescent solution will first be introduced into the fat donor site. A hollow tube called a cannula is then inserted into the site through the incision. The cannula is moved back and forth to dislodge the fat, which is then removed with the help of a suction pump connected to the cannula.

The fat removed from different areas of the body is then processed and purified. During the purification process, only the healthy and best qualify fat cells are selected for transfer. The fat cells are injected inside the breasts through special needles. During the fat injection process, your surgeon will work carefully to make sure your desired breast contour is achieved.

The good news is that unlike breast implant surgery, fat transfer does not involve the placing of incisions on your breasts. This means you will not get scars. After the procedure, you will be allowed to go home. You can resume work after a few days with your surgeon’s approval; however, you must be very careful during the recovery period.

Conclusion

Breast augmentation is an effective and reliable way to increase the size of your breasts and make them appear shapelier. There are two options for breast augmentation: fat transfer and breast implants. Breast implant surgery uses prosthetic devices to add fullness and projection to your breasts. These devices are placed inside the breasts through small incisions.

On the other hand, fat transfer uses your own body fat to deliver the desired aesthetic results. Both surgeries provide good results; however, fat transfer provides more natural and safer outcomes than breast implants. The bad news is that you will not qualify for fat transfer if you lack excess, unwanted body fat.

There are a few things that can be done to the breast to make it look more beautiful. It can be augmented, lifted or reduced. When the breasts are altered, it can also result in changes you can feel in the nipples. The effect of breast surgeries on the nipple varies depending on the site of the incision, the type of surgery you get, as well as the body’s reaction to the surgery.

Some patients may experience a change in the sensation of their nipples. Some feel like their nipples are numb while others feel like their nipples are overly sensitive. This is normal after the surgery because the nerves in the nipples can be affected due to the surgery. In some cases, the change in the sensation of the nipples eventually goes back to normal after a few months to a few years.

When the nerves are damaged during the surgery, they need time to regenerate and heal. For some, the nerves heal, but for some, the nerves can’t heal anymore. This results in a permanent change in the sensation of the nipples. It can take up to two years for the sensation of the nipples to come back. Most surgeons say that if the sensation still doesn’t return after two years, the change is now permanent. This is a risk that those who want to go under breast surgery should be willing to take.

It is also possible for patients not to feel any changes in the nipples. This is because the nipples were not really damaged or affected during the surgery. Surgeries that create the incision near or on the areola are more prone to have changes in the sensation of their nipples. In some breast surgeries, it is possible to create the incision away from the nipples to lessen the chance of having the nerves damaged.

In some patients who went through breast implant surgery, the numbness of the nipples occurs due to the pressure of very large implants. To avoid this, it is best not to get implants that are too big, especially if your anatomy doesn’t suit large implants. The surgeons can suggest the right size for your anatomy, and you should consider them or at least think about them.

Aside from nerve changes in the breasts, it is also possible for some women to have their ability to breastfeed affected. The mammary glands or ducts can be affected by the surgery negatively, but it is also possible it wouldn’t be affected. Some women are still able to breastfeed successfully even after they had breast surgery.

Breast surgery can have negative effects on the nipples, and those who go through it should know about it. They should be well informed about the different risks that may happen due to breast surgeries. This helps make sure they do not get disappointed with the results because they are already well informed about the negative possibilities of the surgery they are about to take.

Introduction

While many women consider breast enhancement procedures like breast augmentation, breast reduction, and breast lift, there are others who look for ways to reduce their nipples. If your nipples are very large and protruding and it is negatively affecting your self-esteem or is creating discomfort for you, you may undergo nipple reduction surgery.

Nipple reduction is an aesthetic procedure that is used to decrease the size of large nipples. The procedure may also involve contouring the nipple so it can appear balanced and aesthetically appealing. Many of the patients who seek this surgery are either embarrassed of their large nipples or experience emotional pain.

What does nipple reduction surgery involve?

The nipple reduction procedure starts with the placement of tiny incisions on the nipple, with the goal to excise the surplus tissue. After the removal of excess tissue, the surgeon will use stitches to close the incisions and the nipples will be dressed to keep them safe during the recovery period. In most patients, the procedure is performed under local anesthesia; however, if needed, general anesthesia may also be used.

Nipple reduction surgery is normally performed within 1 hour and is an outpatient procedure. If your health remains stable after the surgery, you may be allowed to go home after a few hours. The good news is that the incisions are very small and will heal fairly quickly. After the procedure, you’ll be required to wear a special bra so your breasts are properly positioned and held intact. The bra will also help your breasts heal properly and quickly.

Additional considerations

Patients should keep in mind that there are two options when it comes to nipple reduction: decreasing the size of the nipple alone and reducing the size of the nipple and the areola. In most cases, patients experienced enlarged nipple and enlarged areola at the same time. If you have both conditions, you should seek treatment for both.

The nipples appear aesthetically unappealing when they exhibit excessive protrusion and become wide or asymmetrical. On the other hand, the areola may expand and become very large. It may also change symmetry, become domed, or rise from the skin. This will make them aesthetically unwelcoming.

During your consultation with a plastic surgeon, be sure to ask the doctor to examine both your nipple and areola. If early signs of aesthetic flaws have settled in both the areola and nipples, you should get them both treated in a single surgical session.

It is worth noting that apart from the decrease in self-esteem, many patients who have large nipples find it hard to wear swimwear and T-shirts. This holds true for both men and women. Many patients are so embarrassed that they avoid swimming, going topless, and even having times of intimacy. For this reason, some patients use paddings under their shirts to hide their nipples.

When it comes to males, large nipples are a serious issue because it negatively affects their masculinity. As a result of enlarged nipples, even men avoid going topless and being confident while swimming or during intimacy. The good news is that nipple reduction surgery is very effective when it comes to getting rid of enlarged nipples and areolas. After the procedure, your nipples will appear normal and aesthetically appealing.

Candidacy for nipple reduction surgery

In order to qualify for nipple reduction surgery, you should be in good overall health. If you are suffering from serious health problems like diabetes or blood disorder, be sure to bring this to the knowledge of your doctor during the initial consultation. Furthermore, you must have realistic goals and expectations.

There is no doubt that the surgery will improve your nipples; however, there may be certain things out of the surgeon’s control. You cannot expect your nipples to be like that of a teenage girl if you are in your 60s and undergoing nipple reduction. Also, you should defer your plan of nipple reduction if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. In fact, you’ll be advised to wait for at least 5-6 months for your nipples to stabilize after childbirth to be considered for nipple reduction.

In some situations, nipple reduction is undertaken as a see-and-treat-the-case, meaning you may have your surgery right after consultation. The procedure is relatively straightforward, and the risks are not as serious. The good news is that advancements in plastic surgery technologies and techniques have made it safer and better.

What are the risks related to nipple reduction?

There are a number of risks associated with nipple reduction. However, the risks are lower in number and intensity as compared to other major operations like breast enhancement procedures. The common risks of nipple reduction include bleeding infection, swelling, bruising, and nipple asymmetry. The rare risks include a change in or loss of nipple sensation, inability to nurse your baby, and numbness in the nipples.

In order to be on the safe side, be sure to tell your surgeon any health conditions you might be suffering from. It is also important to share your medication history with the doctor so that precautionary measures can be taken during the operation. During the consultation, you must ask your surgeon to explain the risks and potential complications of nipple reduction to you. You should go for the surgery only if you’re sure that the risks are lower than the benefits of the operation.

Conclusion

If your nipples are excessively protruding and enlarged or poorly shaped, they can be decreased in size and enhanced with the help of a plastic surgery procedure called nipple reduction. The procedure is quite simple and involves relatively lower risks. During the surgery, the plastic surgeon will place tiny incisions on your nipples and remove the excess tissue. This will result in decreased nipple size. In order to get better and safer outcomes with nipple reduction, you should make sure to have the surgery performed by a board-certified plastic surgeon only.

Introduction

A breast lift is a reliable procedure to treat sagging breasts. However, some patients need more than a breast lift to restore the aesthetic appearance of their breasts. There are many women who have saggy and small breasts at the same time. There is also a possibility that your breasts will become smaller after the breast lift surgery. In such cases, combining breast augmentation with a lift can deliver you better aesthetic outcomes.

If you want to enhance the shape, position, contour, and size of your breasts, your plastic surgeon will likely recommend a combination of breast lift and augmentation for you. The breast lift will treat the sagginess whereas the breast augmentation will increase the size of your breasts. After the procedure, your breasts will not only become firmer, voluptuous, and perkier, but will also appear bigger and prominent.

Candidacy for the combined surgery

The ideal candidate for the combination of breast lift and augmentation is a woman who has saggy, small breasts and wants to increase the size of her breasts apart from enhancing their shape and position. For majority of patients who have experienced a decrease in breast size, a lift alone is not enough. The combo of breast lift and augmentation will treat both aesthetic flaws at the same time.

It is important to note that the breast lift will not augment your breasts. It is meant solely to make your breasts firmer. In fact in most cases, the breasts become smaller after the breast lift. Other eligibility criteria remain the same. For example, you must have good physical health and realistic goals to undergo the breast lift and augmentation at the same time.

Combining breast lift and augmentation: How is it performed?

During the initial consultation, your surgeon will assess the aesthetic flaws, size, outline, and contour of your breasts. The surgeon will take measurements of your chest dimensions and may use computer simulations to determine how your breasts will look after the procedure. After the assessment, your doctor will recommend you a certain breast implant size that will help achieve your aesthetic goals.

The breast implant is made of a silicone shell pre-filled with silicone gel. There are different shapes and sizes of breast implants. Your surgeon will recommend you the best shape after examining your breasts.

The surgery is performed under general anesthesia. The first step of the procedure is the placement of the incision on your breast. In the second step, the excess skin will be removed, the breast tissue will be reshaped and tightened, and the areola and nipples will be raised to a higher position. In the next step, the implant will be inserted inside the breasts (underneath or above the breast muscle). The incisions will then be closed and sutured. The same process will be repeated on the other breast.

The surgery will be completed in 2-3 hours, depending on the extent of the intervention and your aesthetic goals.

Recovery after breast lift and augmentation

After the surgery, you will experience swelling, bruising, and some degree of pain in your breasts. The pain can be easily managed with pain relief medications. However, the swelling will take several weeks to disappear gradually. You may be able to resume work after 1-2 weeks. However, if your work involves vigorous physical activities, you should take more days off work.

During the recovery period, you will be required to take as much rest as you can. Your doctor will advise you to avoid sleeping on your front side and to steer clear of physical activities like running, stretching, bending, jumping, weightlifting, exercising, and sports for the first month after the surgery.

One of the advantages of the combo procedure is that you will have only one recovery period for both procedures. If the surgeries were performed at separate times, the recovery and downtimes would be twofold.

Risks of combining breast lift with augmentation

Combining breast lift with augmentation will increase the risks and side effects of the procedure to some extent. The common side effects include swelling, bruising, pain, discomfort, nausea, and scarring. The pain, nausea, and discomfort will disappear in 2-3 days following the surgery.

The risks of the combo procedure include excessive bleeding, infection, seroma, hematoma, blood clotting, breast implant rupture or leakage, anesthetic reactions, and hematoma. If you are suffering from serious health problems like diabetes and heart disease, the risks will be higher for you.

It is important for patients to discuss the risks and complications of the surgery with their surgeons during the initial consultation. Also, be sure to share your complete medical history with the doctor.

After the procedure, you will be required to wear compression garments or a support bra. The compression garment is meant to help decrease the risks and aid in quick healing. Make sure to wear the garments for the recommended time period. Also follow your surgeon’s instruction in spirit, so you can recover smoothly and safely.

The results achieved with the combination of breast augmentation and lift will gradually transpire. Some of the results may be immediately visible, but complete outcomes will take a few months to be visible.

Conclusion

Breast augmentation with a breast lift is an effective plastic surgery procedure to treat two aesthetic problems at once, i.e. breast sagging and smaller breasts. The breast lift will make your breasts perkier, firmer, and tighter, whereas the breast augmentation will increase the size and volume of your breasts. After the surgery, your breasts will appear bigger, fuller, perkier, and firmer. This will help enhance your overall aesthetic appearance.

The hourglass body, which was once limited to celebrities, has gone mainstream. Thousands of women are going under the knife each year to achieve the most revered body shape of all time. While the hourglass body has historically remained a trend among women, there has never been so much excitement about this figure.

The hourglass shape features butts and hips of the same size, with a narrow waist, perky breasts, and killer curves. Unfortunately, only a few women in every thousand naturally have this body shape. Those who desire to have the hourglass body often decide to go under surgery. There are a number of plastic surgery procedures to achieve this, the most commonly performed being the hourglass tummy tuck. During this procedure, the waist is slimmed down using liposuction. The excess skin and fat tissues are removed from the abdominal area and the fat collected is reinjected at the hips to provide an improved waist to hip ratio. But a beautiful, curvaceous body is not complete without big, shapely and voluptuous breasts.

The traditional breast augmentation is a procedure that makes the breasts appear fuller. The procedure involves the use of breast implants or your own body fat to give you the desired outcome. The goal of the traditional method is to make your breasts appear bigger.

So, how is the wonder breast augmentation different from the traditional approach? Well, this procedure focuses on your chest dimensions and contour. The implant size or volume of fat is then decided based on these factors. Remember, considering the hourglass shape, excessively large breasts are not always better. Your breasts need to accentuate your overall hourglass figure and be proportionate to the rest of your body.

If you have excess fat in your abdomen, sides, and flanks, you may qualify for breast augmentation with fat. This means that aside from using implants to increase the size of your breasts, the plastic surgeon might also transfer some fat on that area. Using fat transfer together with implants can deliver impressive results and also give the breasts an amazing shape while avoiding the side effects of implant surgery such as rippling and implant visibility.

Is there an age limit to undergo a breast lift?

Introduction

If your breasts have become saggy, loose, and hanging, you may be a good candidate for breast lift surgery. However, you should undergo the surgery only as a last option, and only if the aesthetic appearance of your breasts is negatively affecting your quality of life. Before giving you a green signal for the breast lift procedure, your plastic surgeon will take a number of things into consideration. This will include your age.

In order to undergo the breast lift procedure, you must be aged 18 years or above. Since breast lift is a treatment for saggy breasts, it is only natural that your breasts will most likely start to sag when you are in your 30s or 40s. This means that most women with saggy breasts will qualify for the procedure, given they also meet other eligibility criteria for the surgery.

Age and skin sagginess

When it comes to the age limit placed over breast lift surgery, it doesn’t make much difference because in more than 99 percent of cases, patients experience breast sagginess when they are in their 20s and above. Since the minimum age required to undergo breast lift is 18 years, it means almost all patients considering the procedure may qualify for it.

It is important to analyze the breast lift surgery in light of age. As you age, your skin starts to sag because its natural elasticity decreases. This doesn’t happen before 18. There is no doubt that women aged below 18 years have perky, lifted, tighter, and aesthetically appealing breasts. The problem starts as the patient ages. Other factors that can make age-induced breast sagginess worse include pregnancy, gravity, weight changes, and nursing.

It is only natural and logical to state that women experience pregnancy after 18 years of age. Moreover, it takes multiple pregnancies to induce sagginess in the breasts. This also allows us to conclude that women aged below 18 will not require a breast lift.

Gravity is a powerful factor that can combine with aging to gradually take a toll on the shape and firmness of the breasts. When we look at aging and gravity, both can induce sagginess in the breasts in a gradual process. This can happen when the patient is in her 30s or 40s. The breast sagginess induced by these factors may not be clearly visible initially. The process is slow, so it will take the patient time to realize that her breasts have become saggy.

Massive weight loss is a powerful factor as it can lead to abrupt breast sagginess. If you are aged below 18 years and have experienced breast sagginess due to weight loss, you will be required to wait until you are 18 years of age to undergo the breast lift surgery. If you have smaller breasts but a large body, weight loss may not result in drastic breast sagginess. However, your breasts will be subtly affected, with the nipples pointing slightly downward.

Women with large breasts are more at risk of breast sagginess. If your breasts are overly large and you are aged below 18 years, there is some risk that your breasts may sag. This is particularly possible if you have a genetic predisposition to breast sagginess. However, this condition occurs very rarely. In case it happens, you will be required to wait until you are 18 years to seek breast lift. This is important because by 18 years of age, your breasts will reach their full size and capacity and stabilize.

Why age limit is important for breast lift

This is a very common but important question. Many patients wonder why they are required to wait until 18 years of age to seek plastic surgery, particularly surgeries like the breast lift.

The human body continues to grow quickly during the teenage years. The body also grows after 18 years of age; however, the growth is massive during the first 18 years. This means that your breasts will also grow along with the other areas of your body. If the breast lift surgery is performed before 18 years of age, the results will be poor. Your body, including your breasts, will continue to grow, which will negatively affect the achieved aesthetic results after the procedure.

It is important therefore for the breasts to achieve their maximum possible size and stabilize to qualify for a breast lift. It is also worth noting that the breasts stabilize when a girl reaches 18 years of age. Afterwards, the breasts will not grow as fast. This is one of the reasons why it is important to wait until 18 years of age to qualify for the breast lift procedure.

In addition, the breast lift is a major procedure. There are a number of risks and complications associated with the surgery. In order to make an informed and judicious decision about undergoing the procedure, it is important that you should wait until you are 18 years old. Moreover, when you are aged above 18, your pain tolerance level will also increase, which will make the post-surgery recovery period a smooth process.

You are also required to be in the best physical and emotional health in order to qualify for the breast lift surgery. Even if you are aged above 18, you will be required to have a good health to undergo a breast lift. Additionally, your goals and expectations need to be realistic and reasonable.

Conclusion

A breast lift is a major surgery. In order to qualify for the procedure, you must be at least 18 years of age. Since breast sagging occurs when the patient is in her 30s or 40s, it is very rare that patients below 18 years would seek the breast lift surgery. However, it is important to abide by the age limit rule. By 18 years of age, your breasts will fully develop and stabilize. If the surgery if performed before 18 years of age, further development of your breasts will negatively affect the achieved results. Therefore, you should allow enough time to grow, develop, and stabilize before seeking the breast lift surgery.

The use of breast implants is quite common nowadays. It involves a surgical procedure to insert the implants into the breasts to make them look fuller and sexier. The breast implants can be positioned either above or under the muscle. Both produce a flattering augmentation but there is still an ongoing debate whether an over the muscle or under the muscle position is best.

Breast augmentation surgery using implants can be greatly customized because different women have different breasts. Each person also heals differently, which is why the surgery results may vary from one woman to another. There are women who are more suitable to have their implants under the muscles and there are those who are better to have them over the muscles. This depends on different instances and factors.

The sub-muscular placement of the implants is preferred by many surgeons because it helps prevent capsular contracture. Capsular contracture is the condition wherein the implants become enclosed in a calcified capsule that also tightens and produces a deformed appearance of the breasts. When this happens, the calcified scar tissue should be removed in order to make sure that the implants do not rupture because of the increasing pressure caused by the capsule.

Another reason why many prefer to have the implants positioned under the muscles is that it results to a more natural augmentation. This is especially true for women who are very thin and do not have much fat or tissue in their breasts to completely cover the implants. When the implants are placed under the muscles, it will be more covered. In addition to this, the folds found on the surface of the implants or the rippling that forms will not be obvious because it is hidden underneath the muscles.

Many people also prefer the sub-muscular procedure because there are more tissues above the implants. This means that they are less covered by the implants during a mammogram. However, it should be noted that both placements of the implants, either under or over the muscles, can be successfully screened by an experienced technician. There are different ways on how to screen women who have implants without negatively affecting the implants or the results.

It should be noted that women who are bodybuilders or weightlifters are not recommended to have their implants under the muscles. This is because the implants can get distorted when the muscles in the chest are flexed. It would be best for them to have it at a sub-glandular position.

Different surgeons can help you assess whether a sub-muscular or a sub-glandular position is best for you. During the consultation, they can ask questions to help them determine which one to choose. It is best to hear them out first before you set your decision into getting the implants either under or above the muscles. The surgeons are there to help you with your choices–from the kind of implants to get to the position of the implants in your breasts.

Introduction

Sagging breasts can become an issue for many women at some point in their lives. The sagginess of the breasts occurs as a result of breastfeeding and pregnancy, significant weight loss, or simply the normal aging process.

A frequently performed procedure that ensures the lifting of the breasts is mastopexy. The breast lift intervention consists of removing the excess skin followed by the reposition of the nipple and areola complex to an anatomically correct position. This type of plastic surgery intervention requires performing incisions around the areola’s edge, as well as other scars: vertically from the areola to the inframammary fold and horizontally at the level of the inframammary fold.

Wound healing is a major concern for patients undergoing a breast lift surgery, especially because the level of scarring can be significant.

About the breast lift surgery

In some cases, the patient will want to combine the breast lift surgery with an implant procedure. The patient is not necessarily required to spend the night in the medical facility, but if the intervention is performed with the use of general anesthetic, the surgeon might recommend this. The intervention duration is between two and four hours and depends from patient to patient.

The breast lift surgery can be accompanied by side effects such as bruises, swelling, discomfort, a numbness in the area and dry skin. In a vast majority of cases, they are temporary and will subside on their own without additional treatment within a few weeks or months after the surgery. The incisions will be red and visible up until a year after the surgery because this is how long it can take for the cicatrization process to complete and for the scars to mature.

Complications are rare after the breast lift surgery. However, there is always a risk of developing them. Bleeding, infection and delayed wound healing are among the most commonly encountered. Unsatisfactory results after the surgery is another complication that might require an additional intervention to correct the issue. Mild asymmetries are also possible.

During the recovery period, it is very important for the patient to limit strenuous activities. After two or three weeks, all the sutures will be removed. The recovery is usually considered complete after four to six weeks. However, keep in mind that the shape and size of the breasts can continue to improve over the first six months after the surgery as the tissues heal.

The results of the breast lift surgery are permanent, but the patient needs to be aware of the fact that with aging, the breasts can start sagging again and an additional surgery might be required to elevate the breasts. Discuss your concerns about the result of the breast lift surgery with the plastic surgeon as he will be able to take into consideration your particular characteristics when providing an answer.

Tips on scar healing

Don’t smoke

Some patients don’t understand why smoking is strongly not recommended after plastic surgery. The explanation is simple. The tissues need oxygenated blood to heal fast and properly. When the patient is smoking, the level of oxygen in the blood drops significantly, making the tissues suffer. Skin or fat necrosis can be triggered by a lack of oxygen in the blood, as well as wound dehiscence that can result in vicious scarring or scars that are wider than normal.

Don’t overexercise

Your plastic surgeon will tell you that bed rest is not necessary after the breast lift surgery. More than this, he will even encourage you to resume your daily activities the following day after the surgery. However, you need to keep in mind at all times that you should avoid intense physical activities for four to six weeks after the surgery. Don’t try to lift heavy objects and don’t overstretch your arms to reach upper shelves or while doing chores around the house.

Mild physical exercises such as walking are always recommended to help the metabolism resume its complete functions, but physical exercises should be saved for when you have a green light from your plastic surgeon. Overexercising during the early stages of the recovery period can result in skin tears that can trigger infections or other complications.

Use silicone sheeting when recommended

Your plastic surgeon will make recommendations regarding wound dressing, the hygiene at the incision sites, and also what products to use to expedite the wound healing. Out of a desire to help the wounds heal faster, some patients start applying products on the incisions before the plastic surgeon suggests this. This is wrong. Many of the products meant to help the scars heal well are not to be used for at least two weeks after the surgery. Your plastic surgeon will recommend when to start using them and what exactly to use, so don’t hurry the healing process as you might trigger further complications.

Don’t try to remove the crust over the incisions

A crust can form on the incision sites. It has a purpose so don’t try to remove it as your scars will look worse after this and not better. Despite popular belief, removing the crust won’t expedite the healing. It is quite the opposite actually, as it can trigger more bleeding and wider scars.

Conclusion

If you want your scars to heal well and fast after the breast lift surgery, follow the recommendations of your plastic surgeon. Don’t use products that your plastic surgeon doesn’t recommend and don’t overexercise unless you have clearance from your doctor.

Smoking can interfere a great deal with the healing and cicatrization process, so avoid it at all costs for at least four weeks before and after the surgery.

Introduction

Breast implant surgery is a major operation. The procedure involves the placement of artificial devices (silicone implants) inside the breasts, with the goal to add projection to the breasts and make them appear aesthetically appealing. Given the risks involved in breast implant surgery, there are a number of factors that will be taken into account while assessing your candidacy for the procedure. One of the important things to consider when seeking breast implants is the presence of nodules in your breasts.

The presence of nodules may indicate breast abnormality. Even though breast nodules are common in menstruating women, they can also indicate serious health issues. Some women have multiple nodules, and if you think your breasts have nodules, you must bring this to the knowledge of your plastic surgeon during the initial consultation. Depending on the severity of the condition, your plastic surgeon may recommend some tests and scans to look into the nodules and decide your candidacy for breast implants. If the nodules are abnormal, you may not qualify for breast implant surgery.

Nodules in the breasts and having breast implants

If you have nodules in your breasts, your plastic surgeon will recommend you to undergo a mammogram or sonogram before giving you a green signal for breast implant surgery. Undergoing the surgery without performing the mammogram will increase the risks for you. If the mammogram indicates that the nodules are symptoms of cancer, you will not qualify for the breast implant surgery because it can be extremely risky for you. Instead, you’ll be suggested to have a biopsy done so the existence of breast cancer could be determined.

Given the fast shifting recommendations for mammogram screenings, it can be hard to decide whether to proceed with breast implant surgery. This is the reason why you will be suggested first to undergo biopsy. If the biopsy confirms that your nodules are not cancerous, you may proceed with the breast implant surgery without any apprehensions.

To decrease the risk, it is always advised to do your breast evaluation prior to surgery instead of afterward. This is particularly important if you are above 35 years of age. Of course, the plastic surgeon will take your family history into account when assessing your candidacy for the breast implant surgery.

If the surgeon suspects that the nodules are an indication of early stage breast cancer, you will get a recommendation for a mammogram scan. If the nodule is felt during manual evaluation but not detected on the mammogram, you may be required to undergo a sonography.

In most cases, nodules in the breasts occur as a result of menstrual cycles. However, you will still be required to have a mammogram done if the doctor suspects something bad. You should have the mammogram performed after your menstrual cycle. If it is confirmed that the nodules in your breasts are benign, the condition is not very serious or risky. The nodules can be monitored for changes over time.

Will breast implants cause cancer?

There have been hundreds of studies that have found no link between breast implants and cancer. However, breast implants have the tendency to make the results of mammogram unclear, delaying the diagnosis of breast cancer.

When undergoing a mammogram scan after getting breast implants, radiologists often take a look at the results of any previous mammograms to see how things might have changed. It is therefore important to have at least one mammogram done before breast implant surgery. Remember, breast cancer is more likely to occur in older patients, but that doesn’t mean young women cannot suffer from breast cancer. In fact, cancer has also been found in many teenage girls.

Breast MRI before breast implant surgery

Some surgeons recommend MRI of the breasts before the surgery in case nodules are felt in your breast upon manual evaluation. The MRI is effective in identifying the nodules’ nature and detecting early signs of breast cancer. The breast MRI is not suggested for all patients. The scan is recommended for women who have developed nodules or other abnormal signs in their breasts. Also, if your breasts are dense, your surgeon may recommend you to have an MRI done before determining your candidacy for breast implant surgery.

According to research, MRI not only analyzes the nodules for signs of cancer but also comes with additional benefits. The test can diagnose other important problems within the breasts, based on a number of factors. Furthermore, since mammography is not done on patients aged below 40, most doctors recommend MRI instead if you are aged below 40 and have developed nodules in your breasts.

Conclusion

If your breasts are smaller, flatter, or poorly shaped, you may consider breast implant surgery. However, if the aesthetic condition of your breasts is not negatively affecting your self-esteem or quality of life, you should avoid it. You should go for the surgery only if you believe the benefits are higher than the risks for you. Despite the popularity of breast augmentation via implants, there are many patients who are unaware about many facets of the surgery. Patients often ask whether they can qualify for the surgery if they have nodules on their breasts.

Nodules can be signs of breast cancer; therefore, many plastic surgeons would not advise you to undergo breast implant surgery without performing certain tests and scans. If you are aged above 40, you may have to undergo a mammogram scan to determine if you have breast cancer. For patients below 30 years of age, an MRI can analyze the nodules. If the nodules are benign and show no signs of breast cancer, you will be able to undergo the breast implant surgery if you meet all other criteria for the procedure.

Introduction

Size is important, but there are more factors that go into the making of beautiful breasts. One of the most important elements of aesthetically appealing breasts is the extent of perkiness, youthfulness, firmness, and voluptuousness of the breasts. In other words, breasts that are tighter and youthful with raised nipples look beautiful and attractive.

Unfortunately, majority of women lose the youthfulness and firmness of their breasts over the course of their life. The breasts become saggy, hanging, and aesthetically unwelcoming. There are a number of factors that induce such changes in the breasts, such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, aging, genetics, and gravity.

The good news is that there is a popular plastic surgery procedure called breast lift or mastopexy that can restore the firmness and shape of your saggy breasts. The procedure involves the removal of excess skin from your breasts in addition to tightening the surrounding tissues and lifting the nipples and areolas to a higher position.

The common causes of breast sagging

Breast sagging is caused by a number of factors. Below are the common factors that are known to make the breasts lose and hanging over time:

Pregnancies and nursing: Multiple pregnancies and nursing are the top factors that make the breasts saggy, loose, and aesthetically unappealing. Pregnancy introduces a number of changes in the body, causing the breast to increase in size. After pregnancy, the breasts decrease in size, which causes the skin and glandular tissue to become loose. This makes the breasts appear saggy. Also, breastfeeding leads to loss of elasticity of the breast skin and tissue, particularly the nipples.

Genetics: Some women are genetically predisposed to developing saggy breasts. Over time, they may observe their breasts are becoming loose and drooping. The process can be gradual, but the breasts may be severely affected over time.

Gravity: Gravitational pull is responsible for introducing many aesthetic flaws in the body, and the breasts are primarily affected. Gravitational pull can be severe with large breasts. Combined with aging, gravity can make the breasts extremely saggy and aesthetically unwelcoming.

Aging: Aging is yet another powerful and unavoidable factor that can take a toll on the breasts’ appearance. As women grow older, the breasts’ skin loses elasticity and the ligaments holding the breast lose strength. The glandular tissue also loses its youthfulness over time. As a result, the breasts become saggy. You may particularly observe negative changes in your breasts during menopause.

Weight fluctuations: Weight changes can also trigger breast sagginess. For example, weight gain often leads to increase in breast size, and the breast skin stretches as a result. If the weight gain is massive, the skin’s elasticity may be damaged. When the patient loses weight after weight gain, the breasts decrease in size, which results in saggy breast skin because the damaged skin fails to retract to its original position.

Lack of breast support: If your breasts lack bra support, they will become saggy over time. This is particularly true if your breasts are large. The change may not be as abrupt. It can occur over a period of 30 to 40 years.

How to correct saggy breasts

No matter what has caused your breasts to sag, the condition can be corrected via plastic surgery. Breast lift, also known as mastopexy, is a popular plastic surgery procedure to restore the firmness, perkiness, and youthfulness of your breasts. The procedure can effectively treat conditions like loose breast skin, droopy breast tissue, saggy nipples, and stretched areolas.

Advantages of breast lift

  • Your breast shape, firmness, and perkiness will improve
  • Your breasts will appear youthful and voluptuous
  • Your body’s overall aesthetics and outline will improve
  • You will appear physically beautiful and experience a boost in your self-esteem and emotional health

Disadvantages of breast lift

  • The results of breast lift are not permanent
  • Over time, factors like aging and gravity will gradually make your breasts saggy again
  • You will get scars on your breasts; however, they will be hidden under your garments
  • Pregnancy after breast lift will negatively affect the achieved results

Steps of the breast lift surgery

The breast lift is a major operation. It is performed under general anesthesia or IV sedation. There are a number of techniques to perform the procedure, and the exact incision technique best for you depends on the aesthetics flaws in your breasts and your desires. Each incision types results in different post-surgical scarring.

Depending on the surgical technique you and your surgeon have agreed upon during the initial consultation, your doctor will place the pre-decided incision on your breast. In the second step, the doctor will remove the excess skin from your breasts and then lift the nipple and areola to an elevated position.

If the areolas have expanded, their size will be decreased through skin excision. If the surrounding tissue has become loose, it will be tightened. The surgeon will then re-drape the existing skin and close the incisions. The skin will be stitched together, and sutures will be used to keep the new breasts intact.

The results

Partial results of the procedure will be immediately visible; however, it will take time for your breasts to become completely firmer, tighter, and contoured. As the swelling and bruising disappear over time, your breasts will be restored to their youthfulness. It is important to stick to a healthy lifestyle because your breasts are at risk of getting easily affected by factors like weight fluctuations, smoking, and inactivity.

Conclusion

Breast sagginess is a common aesthetic problem faced by majority of women. The common factors that cause breast sagginess include: weight fluctuations, pregnancies, nursing, gravity, heredity, lack of proper breast support, aging, and poor lifestyle. Certain illnesses and medications can also cause the breasts to become saggy. A breast lift can help restore your perky, beautiful, firm, and youthful breasts. The procedure involves the removal of excess skin from your breasts, tightening the underlying tissues, and raising the nipples and areolas to a higher position.
