Dear Virtually Every Women’s Sports Clothing Brand Ever, We need to talk. We need to talk urgently and we need to talk about pockets. Why do you never include decent pockets in your running ranges? Half the time you don’t bother at all and on the rare occasions that you do, the pockets are only good for a gnat’s cock. Yes, they really are that small and impractical.     When I go running, I like to take my front door key. You know, the thing that allows me to get back indoors. I suppose… View Post

About a year ago, I bought This Mum Runs by Jo Pavey and finally got round to reading it last October. I’ve had the pleasure of meeting Jo a couple of times and she is a truly nice individual, so I was looking forward to getting stuck into her book. After all, we have a lot in common, right? We’re both mums We both run We’re both from the south west We’ve both run marathons And, errrrrrrrr…now I’m stuck. The book starts in 2014, recapping her 10,000m race at the National Championships, a trial for… View Post

A little while back, I announced that I’m excited to be taking part in Swimathon as one of their Ambassadors for this year’s event. I have chosen to take on the 1500m distance, which is a big challenge for me. For the unaware, Swimathon is the world’s largest (annual) fundraising swimming event and I hope to raise funds for Marie Curie, one of this year’s fundraising partners.     I may have hair like a mermaid, but a mermaid in the pool, I am not.     Since making the announcement that I am taking… View Post

I’m currently enjoying a couple of days in Edinburgh visiting a very dear friend of mine. It’s been a stressful few months and that combined with flu has meant that I haven’t been getting as much exercise as I’ve wanted to. I’ve been out for a few short runs, but I have found it very tough on my lungs. Some of that will be due to pneumonia with the subsequent fractured rib last year, some of it is down to telling myself that I can’t when I know deep down that I can. The bottom… View Post

The great thing about running is that it’s for everyone and events like parkrun do a great job of encouraging everyone to go out and take part. Your time doesn’t matter. I’m a member of countless Facebook running groups, all of them supportive and inclusive. All runners are celebrated and from 3 hour marathon runners to 60 minute 5k finishers, everyone is applauded for their achievements. Running is a very personal sport. A good time for one runner may be an easy jog for another. Some of us will spend months training to hit a… View Post

It’s time to announce my big challenge for 2018 and this is something that is really going to push me out of my comfort zone. As one of the official Ambassadors for this year’s Swimathon, I will be swimming 1500m at the end of April. I am a terrible swimmer and long-term readers may remember my experiences of taking part in an aquathon. Confession: I haven’t stepped foot in a pool since. Gulp. (Although hopefully none of that in the pool!)     What is Swimathon? Swimathon is the world’s largest (annual) fundraising swim. Aiming… View Post

I thought about doing a round-up post for 2017. I know they are a bit cliché and every blogger is doing one, but truthfully, I enjoy reading them. It’s refreshing to read what people are proud of. It’s refreshing to see the honesty. For me, 2017, like every other year, has had ups and downs. I haven’t spoken about many of the changes of the blog, although if you follow me on social media, you will have picked up on bits and pieces. So here’s a recap on things that have been important to me… View Post

Post in collaboration with Original Cottages It’s a well-known fact that one of the most beautiful places in the UK is the Lake District. It’s also a well-known fact that this is the place to go if you’re looking for a domestic active break. Yet despite my yearning to visit, I have never actually been. Actually, I lie. I’ve changed National Express coach there when on an epic journey to Belfast from London. I’ve also visited Tebay Motorway Services. This is actually much more pleasant than it sounds as it is independently run and is… View Post

I love the ethos behind parkrun. What started as 13 friends getting together for a 5k run in Bushey Park 2004 has gone on to become an incredible worldwide phenonomon. There is no doubt that it has inspired tens of thousands of people worldwide to get out and move. In addition to that, parkrun has inspired people to volunteer to help out with the running and organisation of these weekly, free events.     Every week, Twitter and Facebook celebrates the accomplishments of parkrunners everywhere. Whether it’s a 15 minute course record, or someone completing… View Post

The thing is, I just need to decide which one. I want to run another marathon. I want to get under 5 hours. I was hoping for a London place, but that didn’t happen. So I’m now overdosing on race reports and trying to decide which to do.     At the moment, I’ve narrowed it down to the following:   Belfast Marathon I love Belfast. I lived there for 3 years and it’s a brilliant city. I wasn’t a runner when I lived there, so the idea of running the city appeals. It would… View Post
