Kelly + Ben

Well firstly, if you follow us and our blog, you’ll already know we LOVE The West Mill in Derbyshire. What’s not to love. It’s one of those venues that no matter how many times we head there, it still gives us a warm comforting feeling as we’re welcomed with open arms. We never get bored of it. There’s always a little surprise at every wedding…Something, or somewhere we’ve not photographed before – it really is the wedding venue that just keeps on giving, and it’s totally the place to get married in Derbyshire.

So, on to Kelly and Ben – Equally awesome people. You guys were so much fun together. Your friends and family were a great laugh all day and we loved hanging out with you all.

We also love weddings where everything all happens at the same location. Guests don’t have to worry about driving from a church and once they’re there they can all relax and just enjoy the day. This really shows and creates such a lovely atmosphere there at the West Mill. While Kelly was getting ready and having her hair and makeup done upstairs, we could hear all the wedding guests arriving for the ceremony and the levels of excitement went through the roof!

Once Kelly had straightened her hair (for the million’th time lol!!!)  we headed out and before you knew it, Kelly and Ben were now husband and wife – There was nothing left to do other than head outside, throw some very glittery confetti and get the party started.

One of the little surprises that The West Mill gave us this time we were there was the yellow Laburnum tree that had conveniently come out in full blossom for us. We noticed in earlier in the day and said we had to use it for some photos and it looked stunning!! It’s great to have an extra splash of colour that isn’t always there all year round!!

Time flew by and we all headed upstairs for dinner, speeches, a couple of cool photos in the bar booths and to really get partying with the awesome band kicking off the first dance.

We had such a fun time with you guys and THANK YOU for trusting us to photograph your wedding the way we saw it through our lens. It really means a lot to us and we hope we’ve captured some great memories of an amazing day for you both!

Here’s a little preview while we work on your full gallery – Turn it up LOUD, and enjoy!

Becki & Martin

For those of you who follow our blog, you’ll already know that we LOVE The West Mill. A shining example of perfect architecture and restoration of anold  industrial building. Lots of interesting pockets of light all around the venue to peek our interest as magpie photographers. Couple it with two awesome humans, and you’ve got an amazing wedding day – Becki and Martin certainly didn’t disappoint!

Becki is one of our avid Instagram followers (stalkers!) and we love her for it. It’s been so great getting to know her through Instagram over the last 18 months and when we heard that they both wanted to book a “connection photoshoot” with us we were super excited to finally meet them in person properly!

Our connection shoots are all about getting two people together, in some amazing locations and light, watching as these two beautiful souls re-connect with each other, taking time out of busy lives to just hang out together and be totally alone (other than with me and a camera!). Becki and Martin totally rocked it. We woke up at pretty much 4am to catch a beautiful sunrise at the top of a mini mountain in Derbyshire, and the effort really paid off. They were so good together and hopefully, they both felt that their wedding photos would be super easy after having had a little practice. As it turns out, I was right. They were both just as good together, if not better on their wedding day! Amazing.

The Wedding Day at The West Mill

As I say, I’d been looking forward to photographing these two as I knew their wedding was going to look beautiful. Becki (and let’s face it, it was mostly Becki!!) had booked some of our favourite wedding suppliers – A dream team of Makeup by JenniHelen Sutcliffe for the hair and makeup, Nadia Di Tullio creating a floral masterpiece and some gorgeous copper pressed stationery signs everywhere by Nicola from Rose Press to really make The West Mill  venue sing and look incredible. I’ve said it before and i’ll happily say it again… I’m so lucky to be able to photograph such amazing weddings in Derbyshire as we have THE BEST and most creative wedding suppliers in the industry here!!

So, with everything looking amazing in the venue, and the girls all looking stunning, it was time some guests arrived and we had ourselves a wedding! Martin and his guys had been for a quick drink across the road at Darleys Wine Bar and he arrived with lots of wedding guests in tow. Before we knew it Becki was walking down the aisle to say a long overdue “I do” and we headed out into the courtyard for cocktails, prosecco, confetti and some photos!

An awesome wedding day

I won’t bore you all with “we did this”, and “we did that” – If you were there you knew what we all did… All I can say is, if you weren’t there, you missed an awesome day. A day filled with so much love, fun, laughter, tears and everything else in between. We absolutely loved it.

Becki & Martin, thanks so much for trusting us to capture your wedding day through our own eyes and for letting us run around the place pretty much doing what we liked with a camera in our hands. It means the world that you guys trust us 100% and we really hope we’ve captured some amazing memories to last a lifetime as I bet the whole day went by waaaaay too fast?!!!

Here’s a little preview for you both to enjoy while we work on your full gallery! Turn it up LOUD, and Enjoy!!! 🙂

Well!!! What can I say!! LOVED this wedding! We knew it was going to  a great day ever since we met them again for a coffee and a chat a few weeks before the big day! They are a great couple and they (I mean Sam) had put a huge amount of thought into the planning! They came along to our Giant Wedding Show and I think they picked all our favourite people which is awesome as we love it when we know lots of great suppliers are involved in the day!!

So we started out the day at Knockerdown Cottages near Carsington Reservoir. Sam was getting ready in one cottage with the mums, the bridesmaids, Penelope from The Frangipani Tree and Kayleigh from Kayleigh Read Hair.  In the meantime, Callum and his men were preparing for the day in a separate cottage – I had much fun with these guys – so funny and relaxed!!

The weather had been decidedly dodgy all morning BUT it promised to pick up and with 90 minutes to go it was decided that they were going to go for it – an outside ceremony! Happy Days! Everyone gathered on the lower lawn with the Peak District in the background, Callum waiting nervously at the front and then the bridesmaids arrived – followed closely by Sam and her Dad! It was an emotional wedding with lovely readings by a Scottish uncle and lovely Grandad! They walked back down the aisle as husband and wife and got covered in confetti – then drinks on the lawn. Everyone hoped onto coaches back to the stunning Osmaston Park for a huge welcome tunnel followed by fizz, ale, cider and lots of great canapés from UpperCrust.

Some great speeches followed during dinner, I think we were all a bit concerned about what the Best Man might say (if you’ve met him you’ll undertsand ) but actually he was hilarious! A great great speech! Evening guests soon started to arrive, Rustic Crust started to set up,  and it was time to cut the cake and do the first dance!

We had such a great time with Callum & Sam – we felt like long time friends. Their bridesmaids and groomsmen were welcoming, their family and other guests were chatty and engaging and it was such an enjoyable day!

We’ve done a little Sneak Peek for everyone while we work on the Full Gallery – TURN IT UP LOAD AND ENJOY!!

Yurt Wedding Photography

We love a bit of Yurt wedding photography!!!! Well we do now, this was our first and we loved it!! We’ve done lots of photography for wedding using Tipis, but never a Yurt. They’re amazing!! Super stylish inside with wooden structural sides and a cream canvas which gives a beautifully warm light inside the Yurt which is great for photography.

On the morning, Ben arrrived at mum & dad’s house in Yoxall to meet Alice & the girls (and a swarm of bees !!) and hung out with them for a while.

I went to join the groom, Jono, at Alice’s sister’s house, but he wasn’t there!! Turns out he got stuck on the motorway while collecting his brother. When they got back it was a bit of a rush to get everyone ready, but they did really well and it was off to the church in Hoar Cross in the Porcshe with only 10 minutes to spare!! No worries, we made it there and it was as if there was no stress at all by the time Alice arived with her dad in their amazing Land Rover Defender. We’re a little bit jealous – We want one!!!

A church wedding

They got married in this beautiful church with a couple of really lovely readings and before long, they processed down the aisle and it was out into the gorgeous Spring sunshine. While family portraits are super important to the couple, as its not very often all the family is together in one place, Jono & Alice were keen to get them done nice and quickly so they could get back to the house and relax and party. So we whipped through them and everyone headed back. Once back at the house, drinks were flowing, the magician was doing his thing, canapés were doing the rounds and the wedding guests were chilled out, chatting and relaxing on the grass. Such a perfect atmosphere – Lots of laughter and everyone just having the best time!

The wedding yurt

The yurt looked so pretty, lots of gorgeous flowers including a big floral circle hanging from the centre of the roof by the amazing Emily Wisher. A lovely vintage bar with more flowers. A cute little log burner with sofas either side and even a vintage teacup cupboard.

Following a great steak dinner from Kemp & Kemp, were some great speeches. Then the cake was cut and the dancing began – Everyone hit the dance floor and the rest is history!

We had a great day with Jono & Alice, they are a very fun couple, so many laughs! It was infectious – Alice is truly hilarious! Thank you vereyone for making us welcome and feeding us so well!

Here’s a sneak peek from the day, just a few of our favourites – turn it up loud and ENJOY!!

Stancliffe Hall Wedding Photography

We are always delighted to take part in some Stancliffe Hall wedding photography!! When Helen & Phil booked us back in 2018, we hadn’t been to Stancliffe Hall so we were very much looking forward to it! We’re Derbyshire wedding photographers, so Matlock is on our doorstep and we love coming to country houses for weddings!

We found that it’s an ideal wedding venue, the house stands high above Darley Dale near Matlock and has the benefit of stunning panoramic views across the Derwent Valley as far as Riber Castle!  Nestled with 50 acres of parkland in the heart of the Peak District, it is a unique and exclusive Derbyshire wedding venue.

At Stancliffe Hall, you are allowed full exclusivity and able to hire the house for the entire weekend. This meant that the whole wedding party had stayed the night before, relaxed with pizza & beers before heading off to get some sleep before the big day began! What an awesome way to start the weekend with your bridal party.

The wedding day

When we arrived on this lovely Spring day, our beautiful bride Helen was getting ready in the bridal suite with her daughter Lily, bridesmaids and the mums. While, in another section of the house, Phil and his groomsmen and lovely son Charlie, were preparing for the day too.

There is a renovated school chapel on the site which makes for the perfect location for the wedding ceremony and the registrars were there in plenty of time. After a beautiful ceremony with a very cute reading from the children. Then everyone over to The Stone Court for glasses of fizz. But as it was such a lovely day, we all headed out into the sunshine for drinks reception some family photos in the gardens. We also took the opportunity for a couple of bride & groom photos but left the majority till after dinner when the light was a little softer. In for dinner and some great speeches, it was all too much for little Charlie who fell asleep at the table with a Crayola pretty much up his nose! Oh, to be a kid again!! With the cake cut done it was time for the first dance and to get the party started!!

We had a great time with Helen & Phil, they are a lovely couple with great friends and family. Here’s a little Sneak Peek of the day – TURN IT UP LOUD AND ENJOY!!!

The history of this beautiful Derbyshire wedding venue

There has been a building on this site as far back as the 1600s when it was owned by the Columbell family, Lords of Darley from 1373 to 1721. It was rebuilt in 1854 by the famous local engineer Sir Joseph Whitworth, who moved into the house in 1872 with his second wife, Lady Louisa. He was a renowned inventor and engineer and is buried in the local churchyard at Darley Abbey. Lady Louisa continued to live in the hall for the rest of her days and ensured that part of her husbands fortune was used to establish a splendid institute and a hospital for the people of Darley Dale. The name of Whitworth  is still synonymous with the local area and The Whitworth Scholarship programme still exists today with 10-15 scholarships being awarded each year to top class engineers who have entered in to a degree level engineering program.

After Lady Louisa’s death, early in the 20th century, the house become a school and remained as such until 2001 when it was closed.  In 2003 it was bought by a local self-made multi-millionaire, Deborah Fern and her husband.

The modern day Stancliffe Hall

When Deborah and Brian acquired the hall, the school had been closed for two years. There was so much work to be done! The house itself was overshadowed by a tower block that was added back when it was a school. They decided to remove the top floor of this building to reduce the height, demolished the 20th century pre-fab class rooms, converted the school kitchen into a billiard room, installed a spa, added a new conservatory and restored many of the internal fittings in both the public and private sections of the house. The project was huge and cost in excess of £6 million!! But now the house is a stunning example of what can be done – it stands within 50 acres of woodland and parkland.

Wedding Photography at Stancliffe Hall

Where to begin?! The house itself provides a beautiful backdrop with the bride & groom meandering on the lawns. The parkland allows for beautiful vistas where we can make use of the wide lens. The trees are surrounded by buttercups and daisies – perfect for playing flowergirls and pageboys.  The driveway to the property is shaded in either side is covered in ferns and flowers – we loved this area for the groomsmen. The rose garden and the wilder area to the back which we loved. Of course, all this doesn’t take into account the inside of the house. The renovated chapel (The 1816 Room) for the wedding ceremony, the Whitworth Room for the Wedding Breakfast and evening reception. All in all, this is a lovely Derbyshire wedding venue.
