Many homeowners today don’t have the time, energy or experience to take care of the myriad of tasks and repairs that come with owning a home. This means that it’s necessary to find someone to help take care of any household maintenance issues that may arise. Letting a stranger into your home can be a daunting prospect, however, which is why it’s important to do your research to ensure you find a handyman you can trust. Here are some things to keep in mind that will help you avoid unscrupulous contractors.

  • A reputable handyman doesn’t go door-to-door. Be wary of contractors who contact you with unsolicited phone calls or visits to your home, as well as those driving a vehicle with out-of-state plates. A successful handyman won’t need to seek out work, but rather will be able to rely on his reputation, positive online reviews, word-of-mouth referrals and repeat work from established customers.
  • A reputable handyman doesn’t demand money upfront. Stay away from anyone who asks for large cash payments upfront or refuses to guarantee the price of the job. You should never pay in cash, because you won’t have proof that a payment was made. Progress payments are acceptable, with the money being paid out after each stage of the project is completed, but beware of contractors who ask for additional progress payments before the previous stage has been finished.
  • A reputable handyman won’t expect payment before the project is finished. Never pay out the final balance or sign a Certificate of Completion before closely inspecting the work to ensure it’s been completed to your satisfaction.

Kitchen and bathroom renovations are still among the most popular home improvement projects for homeowners looking to update their homes. With all the technological advances made in the area of home improvement in recent years, planning your bathroom or kitchen remodel has become even more exciting. This is true even when it comes to choosing new fixtures. If you want the latest trends in faucet technology to be a part of your home, Handyman Connection advises trying out one of these cool fixtures.

Wi-Fi-Controlled Showers

How would you like to have your shower warmed up to the perfect temperature and ready to go before you even set foot in the bathroom? Well, now you can with a Wi-Fi-enabled shower system called the U by Moen. Simply customize your preferred settings via the U by Moen app, and you’ll be able to enjoy a digitally-enhanced shower experience.

Filtered Water on Demand

If you’ve always shied away from drinking tap water, you now have the option of getting filtered water directly from the kitchen sink. Several plumbing brands have recently come out with faucets that highlight water filtration technology, which means you can enjoy clean, pure, refreshing water straight from your faucet’s spout. The Grohe Blue® faucet even takes things a step further by incorporating a chilling system and carbonation along with the water filtration feature!

Touch Controls

If you’ve ever manually adjusted your showerhead while taking a shower, you know what it’s like to get a faceful of water. Not only is it annoyingly hard to adjust a shower head manually to get just the right flow, they can be hard to reach if you’re on the short side. Fortunately, American Standard will soon be coming out with an advancement that will allow people to change the spray patterns of their showerhead with a simple touch – or, for those with mobility issues, via a wireless remote button.

Another product that takes advantage of touch controls is the foot-activated kitchen faucet from Grohe. This handy innovation makes it much easier to keep the faucet and the kitchen as a whole cleaner and more sanitary. The faucet can be turned on and off with a quick tap of the foot on the sensor that’s mounted at the base of the cabinet.

Hands-Free Kitchen Faucets

Although hands-free faucet technology has been present in public settings for quite a while, several companies now have hands-free faucet models available that can be used in the home. This function makes keeping the kitchen (and the faucet) clean and tidy even easier and more convenient, and requires nothing more than holding your hands near the sensor at the base of the faucet.

Wondering where to find a handyman to install your new faucets? Look no further than Handyman Connection. For the best home maintenance services you can find, give us a call today at 1-800-88-HANDY.

We’ve all heard tragic stories about deaths due to unintentional carbon monoxide poisoning. This odorless, tasteless, colorless gas is a silent killer which, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), takes the lives of 400 Americans every year. An additional 20,000 visit the ER, while more than 4,000 are hospitalized.

What Are the Signs of CO Poisoning?

Carbon monoxide gas can come from a variety of sources, including lanterns, grills, fireplaces, gas stoves and gas furnaces. The common symptoms people with the early stages of CO poisoning will experience include mild to severe headache, dizziness, nausea, vomiting and confusion. Those that are sleeping can die before even experiencing any symptoms.

How a CO Detector Can Save Your Life

The only way to definitively know if you have high levels of carbon monoxide present in your home is with the use of a carbon monoxide detector on every level. These devices operate much like smoke alarms: when CO gas is detected, an alarm sounds. Most CO detectors emit short beeps or chirps. The pattern is often four beeps, followed by a short pause, repeated continuously until CO levels drop or the alarm is reset.

So what should you do if your CO detector activates and goes into alarm mode, emitting a beeping or chirping sound? Follow these steps to keep you and your family safe:

  1. Press the Test/Reset button, then immediately leave the house.
  2. Notify the fire department so they can check your residence to see if there is indeed a high level of carbon monoxide.
  3. DO NOT try to somehow test for the gas yourself. As it is odorless, tasteless and colorless, the only way to detect CO is with the use of monitoring devices from an emergency response department.

For homeowners seeking to give their home a facelift – whether in preparation for selling their home or for their own enjoyment – it’s always a smart idea to seek those improvements that will provide the best return. In order to aid in this decision, every year Remodeling magazine publishes a Cost vs. Value Report listing the remodeling projects with the best return on investment (ROI), detailing the value each retains at resale. If you want to get the most for your money in 2019, here are the four remodeling projects you’ll want to focus on.

Minor Kitchen Remodel (ROI: 80.5%)

Updating your kitchen doesn’t have to break the bank. A minor kitchen remodel can include such things as resurfacing your kitchen cabinets instead of replacing them, changing out old hardware for something more eye-catching, installing new countertop or flooring, upgrading a couple of your older appliances to more energy-efficient models, and even brightening up the room with a fresh coat of paint. This type of remodel will allow you to enjoy your kitchen more, raise your home’s value and likely fetch a higher selling price when it comes time to sell your home.

Deck Addition (ROI: 69.1% Composite, 75.6% Wood)

A sturdy new deck installed by a deck installation service makes an excellent addition to your outdoor space, providing the perfect gathering spot to enjoy summer nights and to entertain friends. An attractive, high-quality deck will not only expand your living space, it will also boost your home’s curb appeal and help increase the number of offers you get when you put your house on the market. Keep in mind, however, that the type of material you use to build the deck has an effect on how much you’re able to recoup from your investment, with wood products providing a better return than composite materials.

Entry Door Replacement (ROI: 74.9% Steel)

Your front entry door is one of the first things people notice about your home. If your entry door is old, dented and scratched with peeling paint, it’s not going to provide a great first impression, especially if you’re trying to sell your home. After all, you want to get people in the door, not chase them away. Installing an attractive new steel entry door is a smart investment, as it will not only improve the look of your home’s entryway, it will also provide better security and be much more energy-efficient than the previous one.

Bathroom Remodel (ROI: 67.2% Midrange, 58.1% Upscale)

Another beneficial home improvement project is a bathroom remodel. We all enjoy having a space in which to pamper ourselves a little after a hard day at work, and a comfortable place to get ready for the day. A bathroom remodel can give you this without putting a huge strain on your bank account. While you may be tempted to go big and turn your bathroom space into a luxury spa retreat, you’ll actually see a better return on your investment if you choose materials that are a little more affordable yet still of good quality.

As beautiful as hardwood floors and carpeting can be, there are some places where they just aren’t an appropriate choice; specifically, in areas prone to moisture, such as the bathroom and basement. Instead, choose one of these water-resistant flooring options that are much more suitable for rooms where moisture is frequently present.

  • Vinyl flooring. If you’re renovating your bathroom or basement and are worried about staying under budget, vinyl is a very affordable flooring option. It comes in both tile and sheet form, which gives you a little flexibility as far as style, and it’s available in a variety of patterns and colors. It’s also petroleum-based, which makes it resistant to water, mildew and mold. Keep in mind that high-quality vinyl does a better job standing up to humidity than less expensive vinyl flooring.
  • Stone tile. If you love the beauty of natural stone like granite and marble, stone tile may be the right flooring for you. It’s important to remember that, while solid, stone tiles are still porous and must be sealed regularly. They have various levels of absorption: non-vitreous, semi-vitreous, vitreous and impervious. Because non-vitreous stone is the most absorbent, it’s not a good choice for areas that see a lot of water. Choose vitreous stones instead.
  • Ceramic tile. Available in a wide array of styles, colors, shapes and sizes, ceramic tile is an extremely popular flooring option that can be used throughout the house. Sealed ceramic tile has several features that make it perfect for use in bathrooms and basements: it’s waterproof, easy to clean and resistant to scratching. It can even be accented with tinted grout to make it a little more decorative.
  • Concrete. For many homeowners, concrete floors provide a simple, cost-effective solution to the flooring dilemma. With the option of decorative staining and stamping available to add interest, concrete flooring provides a unique alternative to other flooring selections.

It doesn’t take much for a bedroom closet to become a disorganized mess, full of outdated clothes that no longer fit, shoes that are no longer worn and other accessories that are no longer needed or used regularly. As overwhelming as the thought of organizing your closet may seem, there are quite a few simple tricks you can use for closets large and small that will help you achieve and maintain an attractive, well-ordered space.

  • Install custom cabinets. The bedroom closet is an area that requires a good deal of storage room, and adding shelves to a closet by incorporating custom-crafted cabinets will give you plenty of space to work with. It’s also recommended to work with a skilled designer who can help you choose exactly which styles, colors, finishes and accessories will work best for your closet.
  • Utilize hanging organizers. For closets that aren’t quite big enough to allow for cabinetry, hanging organizers provide an inexpensive alternative. Most of these organizers attach directly to your curtain rod using metal hooks or velcro tabs, and hold a number of shelves and sometimes even drawers where you can store various types of clothing and accessories. Other options include front-to-back clothing bars, valet rods and pull-out garment racks.
  • Coordinate your hangers. While having matching hangers may seem like a minor detail, it actually can make a difference in the way your clothes hang and line up. When the hangers are uniform in shape and size, your clothes tend to stay in place better, and it becomes easier to locate what you’re searching for. In addition, matching hangers are more aesthetically appealing.
  • Use baskets and bins to get yourself organized. See-through baskets and bins work well for things such as socks, underclothes, scarves and other small items. Just be sure to label each bin clearly and always return things to their designated spot, or you’ll end up wasting time pawing through various baskets each time you want to find something.

Not only does decorative wall trim do a great job of hiding the juncture where your walls and doors or flooring meet, it’s the perfect touch to provide your room with a finished look. There are quite a few different wall trim styles to choose from, however, which can make deciding which type of trim to use for each specific purpose confusing.

To help make this decision process a little less baffling for you, Handyman Connection is here to share with you some of the most common styles of wall trim and what they’re used for.

  • Baseboard. Nobody wants to see an unsightly gap between their wall and floor, which is where baseboard comes in. Ranging anywhere from three to five inches in width, baseboard is generally simple in style, and is often finished off with a small piece of semi-circular quarter-round trim.
  • Door casing. Another unattractive gap can be found between walls and window or door frames. Window trim and door casing varies in style, but the width for both is usually between two and three inches. This covers the gap and provides a smooth transition between the two structures.
  • Crown molding. While it isn’t strictly necessary to apply trim where the walls and ceiling of a room meet, it definitely adds some nice architectural interest. Crown molding – also known as cornice moulding – is available in a variety of different types, though they all tend to be ornate with an intricate profile.
  • Chair rail. The original purpose of this type of trim can be found in its name. Essentially, chair railing is meant to protect your walls from damage caused by dining room chairs and other furniture. Some people, however, use it for a purely aesthetic purpose–to provide a dividing line between two different shades of paint, or two different types of wall coverings.
  • Egg-and-dart. If you’re going for a more classical feel, the oval egg-like shapes interspersed with V-shaped darts found on egg-and-dart molding can give you the look you’re going for. This Greek-influenced style is often paired with crown molding or chair rail trim.

The kitchen is often the busiest room of the home. A variety of activities take place here, from food prep and cooking to family gatherings and entertaining. Needless to say, working in a small kitchen can be a real struggle, but with the right storage and design solutions, you can make your kitchen look and feel bigger without having to resort to extensive interior carpentry work. Try implementing these simple ideas for opening up your kitchen and making it look and feel bigger.

  • Declutter like crazy. Not only will an excess of kitchen supplies and appliances make your room feel smaller, it will also take up valuable counter, cabinet and drawer space. Start by getting rid of food containers with missing lids, extra kitchen utensils and the collection of plastic cups you’ve collected from various restaurants and fast-food places. If your kitchen appliances are getting on in years, consider replacing them with smaller, sleeker, more energy-efficient models to save space and energy.
  • Transition to open shelving. One of the best ways to make your kitchen feel more open is to use open shelving in place of bulky upper cabinets. Open shelves take up much less space, and have the additional advantage of being less expensive than traditional kitchen cabinets. Just remember that with no cabinet doors behind which to hide your stuff, you’ll need to stay on top of keeping the shelves tidy and organized.
  • Undermount your kitchen sink. In a tiny kitchen where space is at a premium, you need to make use of every inch that you can. By undermounting your kitchen sink, you’ll be able to utilize the extra counter space that would normally be covered by the lip of the sink. In addition, without the lip of the sink to interrupt the flow, your countertop will have a more seamless look.
  • Hide kitchen appliances. If new appliances aren’t an option, consider using cabinet fronts to disguise your old ones. While this is one of the more costly methods of hiding outdated appliances, the resulting streamlined look (and the lack of bulky appliances cluttering things up) provides a cohesive look that works well for small kitchens.

Shaun McCarthy owns Handyman Connection of Colorado Springs, is dedicated to giving back to his local community and promoting diversity within his business, and is our #FranchiseeFriday! He said that he loves franchising because, “Being part of a franchise provides me with two key resources that help me run my local business successfully. The first being support from our Home Office at Handyman Connection, who provides support with technology, marketing and strategic planning. Additionally, having unlimited access to my fellow Handyman Connection franchisees has been extremely rewarding and beneficial, as we constantly exchange best practices and share advice to help the growth of our individual locations and the brand as a whole.” Check out our Q&A with Shaun:

  1. How does your franchise participate in community outreach efforts and give back to the local community?
As the owner of my local Handyman Connection, I represent my business on the board of Junior Achievement in Colorado Springs. We are always looking for ways to volunteer and sponsor local organizations within our community and prioritize giving back. As an example of a recent sponsorship, Handyman Connection of Colorado Springs was a sponsor for Springs Recovery Connection’s Annual Breakfast.

  2. What steps does your franchise system and your locations personally take to promote diversity in the workplace?
Diversity across our business is something we fully believe in. When interviewing and recruiting our craftsmen, we focus on the level of skillset, willingness to learn and professional experience. We hire all that qualify.

  3. What methods do you use to improve the franchisee-franchisor relationship?
I’m an active member of both the Handyman Connection Advisory and Marketing Committees. I participate in numerous pilot programs and share my experiences and insight with prospective franchisees looking into joining the Handyman Connection family. The Handyman Connection corporate team is easily accessible and always welcome to any feedback shared from a franchisee perspective. With open communication, we’re able to work together to provide the most effective tools and resources across the brand and I look forward to being an active franchisee in the system for many years to come. It’s been one of the most rewarding aspects of being a franchisee.

  4. What traits do you look for when evaluating potential managers to help run one of your franchise locations?
When evaluating potential managers for my Handyman Connection business in Colorado Springs, I look for individuals who ‘live’ our culture. They must understand the business and be proactive in creating an ongoing strategy that supports our goals to further contribute to our success and then prioritize the execution to see it through. A phenomenal manager is one that is excellent at providing quality customer service and having the ability to manage a nonstop call center environment.

  5. How have you used technology at your franchise to increase efficiency in your operations, and what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve solved with a technological improvement?
We have the majority of our employees on our mobile app, which we use as a main form of communication. We constantly communicate best practices and ways to use the app to help our employees become more efficient and productive. We utilize the app to distribute schedules, to receive notes from our craftsmen to the office, obtain before and after pictures of projects and more. We also use technology to streamline our timesheet process, we found that we were not effectively spending time to manage time, so utilizing a PEO has significantly helped us improve our day to day operations.
