Let’s talk lab grown, man-made, synthetic diamonds. This market has been growing so rapidly over the past few years that we’re about to witness a big shift in the diamond industry. But what is the attraction? Is it the price point? The high tech innovation? The idea that it’s eco-friendly? To set the record straight, I asked 20 influential lifestyle bloggers, with an outreach of 6 million followers, for their opinions about synthetics. Thumbs up, or thumbs down?

We have this notion that synthetics have become a real threat to the natural diamond, but how can you truly compete with something that is nothing less than a natural miracle? For us lovers of all things sparkly, it’s really important to reflect on the emotional value of our jewellery purchases, and this is one issue that gets people talking. So let’s look at both sides of the picture.

6 FACTS ON MAN-MADE DIAMONDS VERSUS NATURAL DIAMONDS:
  1. By mimicking the natural conditions necessary for carbon to grow into a diamond, sophisticated machines are now able to produce synthetic diamonds identical to natural ones. It is not easy to tell the difference with the human eye, or even with traditional methods like loupes and microscopes. Lab grown diamonds have essentially the same physical, chemical and optical characteristics as their natural counterparts.
  2. Natural diamonds were created billions of years ago, deep inside the core of Mother Earth and hold significant value. Man-made diamonds are created in a radically different way. They are grown from seeds in state-of-the-art laboratories in a matter of weeks.
  3. What I find really frustrating about this is that man-made diamonds are not necessarily cheaper than the real thing. Scientific progress has contributed to this shift in the market, as they are producing brilliant and realistic alternatives to natural diamonds. But I think that will change. Over time, I believe real diamonds will go up in value, with emerging economies and rising standards of living will continue to feed the demand, and open up new markets, particularly in Africa.
  4. Another surprising factor of lab grown diamonds is that they’re not as friendly to the environment as you might first think. Unless the lab is using renewable sources of energy, to produce these crystals requires a huge amount of electricity. On the flip side, they do have shorter supply chains. A better idea for the environmentally conscious is to invest in secondhand diamond jewellery and recycled gold.
  5. Of course, you can’t overlook the environmental impact of diamond mining, and its history of unethical mining practices. Natural diamonds are extracted from millions of tonnes of rock dug out of large open pits mostly in Botswana, Canada, and Russia. Known as rough diamonds, these gems go on to be polished and cut in Antwerp or India, before they end up at jewellery houses, workshops, and retailers.
  6. Unlike the Blood Diamonds of the African Civil Wars, synthetics are conflict-free. This is an important difference and something today’s jewellery lover needs to be aware of when making a purchase.

The official definition of a diamond has changed. I am all for man-made diamonds as long as the consumer understands the difference. Personally, having seen some of the most spectacular natural diamonds in the world, like the heart-shaped 92-carat diamond, the blue Oppenheimer diamond, and a 163-carat De Grisogono flawless diamond, I can honestly say they took my breath away and touched me on an emotional level. Natural diamonds are just such unique, rare miracles of nature.

So what did 20 Instagram influencers think of synthetic diamonds? Many gave them a thumbs up based on everyday, wearable jewellery, but a thumbs down for momentous jewellery like an engagement ring. Only the real deal will do because a true diamond holds its value. There is a place for synthetics, perhaps as a fashion item, but there is nothing rare about them.

What’s your opinion? Thumbs up or thumbs down for lab grown diamonds? Share with me in the comments!

The series of interviews with women and men who have personalities, story to tell and their own GEM style. They make it happen for themselves all over the world and follow GEMOLOGUE by Liza Urla.

There are two ways to enhance a woman’s beauty: aesthetic medicine and sparkly jewels. Daria Voropai is rocking both! You might have just got lucky – she’s sharing her knowledge in my Gem Talk!

Mom to a wonderful boy, driven aesthetic medicine & dentistry specialist and a beautiful personality, Daria has a strong sense of fashion and jewellery style. If she’s not jet setting the world, you’ll find her on Harley Street making women the best versions of themselves!

Name: Daria Voropai
Alma Mater: Medical University of Utrecht
Occupation: Aesthetic Doctor, prospective Oral, Maxillofacial Surgery
Hometown: London/Amsterdam

LONDON OR AMSTERDAM:  I like London, but I truly LOVE Amsterdam. I have lived in London for almost 5 years and then DAM was calling me back. I relocated last year and since then I am commuting for 3 days a week to London.

FAVOURITE SPOTS IN AMSTERDAM: CoffeeConcepts, that’s a coffeeshop (yes they serve COFFEE there) near the lovely Vondelpark. If you like having great coffee (and cake) while reading a magazine, finishing up some work on your laptop or just socializing that’s the place to be. My favourite restaurant is MOMO, sushi is the best there. Summers in Amsterdam are, in my opinion, so charming. You will see residents living near the canals put their own tables in front of their houses and enjoy the weather with neighbours, friends or people that are just passing by. My favourite thing to do in Amsterdam is to get on a boat and tour the canals. Spending time with family and friends whilst enjoying the ambiance of the city, watching other people and of course the sweet tasting Rose wines and canapés.

FAVOURITE SPOTS IN LONDON: London and I have some sort of a love-hate thing going on. The luxury the city has to offer is just to die for! So many amazing restaurants, day spas… Speaking of which, the one I visit frequently is ESPA Life at the Corthina Hotel – it’s like a little oasis in the middle of a large and busy city. I drink my cocktails at The Artisan or the Mandrake Hotel. Another favourite of mine is the Chiltern Firehouse. Although cliche, it’s just around the corner from work.

IN THE BEGINNING: Oh gosh… for as long as I can remember I always wanted to pursue a career in medicine. I used to tell my mom that I was going to heal all the sick children in the world and after we would all be able to play together. Further my interest in facial surgery came from my junior rotations or little internships during final university years. I was placed at the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. There I witnessed the most intriguing surgery. The patient was involved in an accident a few months earlier and broke his orbit – the bone surrounding your eye. The surgeon wanted to reconstruct his orbit. So an incision from ear to ear was necessary and his face was kinda peeled off. I remember staring at his forehead, which now was lying on his chin. I was thinking to myself ‘OMG did I just witness a FACE OFF’? I found it so intriguing and just knew this would become my future specialty.

AMSTERDAM DEBUT: Well, this is a funny story. My mom is a very beautiful woman, who takes care of herself very well. When I graduated medical school, she decided that it would be very handy if I became an aesthetic doctor. As a graduation present she payed for my courses in aesthetic medicine (fillers, mesotherapy, botox, etc.) and afterwards she accommodated me with a little practice. So that’s how my aesthetic days begun. My mom was my very first client followed by her friend and then the word just got out there and after 6 months I was almost fully booked in every weekend and had to combine my hospital job with my aesthetic job.

LONDON DEBUT:  I moved to London to start my second higher degree, dentistry. I embarked on a very competitive dental course at King’s College London. So besides being a mom and a student I have decided that I need to start practicing my hobby in London. I have been mentored by Dr. Kate Goldie, who is one of the aesthetic doctors famous worldwide. From that point we started working together and now run a high-end clinic on Harley Street (Clinic 77). It is hard to get an appointment, but so worth it.

SHOP THE LOOK:

AROUND THE WORLD: Besides working in the clinic I am part of a research centre focusing on regeneration of skin and tissues. This is part of our clinic, we make a plan individually designed for each client and the main goal is to strengthen and regenerate his/her own tissue and of course improve the appearance. I teach aesthetic and rejuvenating procedures such as dermal fillers, treatments etc. around the world. Last year I have travelled to Montreal, Bangkok, Taipei, Monaco, Malaga, Berlin, New Zealand and San Diego. Travelling helps me understand different aesthetic trends globally and I learn something new every time by talking to my foreign colleagues.

BOTOX: …Because there is no gym for wrinkles. Botulinumtoxin is a protein based solution, which relaxes your mimic muscles to prevent them creasing your skin and thus making wrinkles. It’s very popular nowadays and when it is done well, the result is beautiful and unspottable.

HARLEY STREET: Which doctor does not dream to have a business card, which says Harley Street? Well mine came true. Clinic 77 is a bit of speakeasy. Hard to find and to get in but amazing. We are not a high volume clinic. That means that we care, look and plan for our clients. A consultation is about an hour. From there on we make a plan for the year with your aims: be that prevention, beautification or rejuvenation, whatever you want. All treatments are preformed by highly skilled doctors. That makes us different form many clinics. We make you fall in love with yourself again.

POWER COMES FROM: Knowledge, emotions & beauty.

TOPSHOP OR CHANEL: Chanel! I bought my first flapbag caviar leather with my very first salary. So that’s emotional. On the day I received my payment I went to the boutique to buy the bag and walked out one salary lighter. Now I must say I can equally fall in love with a beautiful piece from Topshop as long as it gives me that excitement.

ONLINE SHOPPING: Online shopping has made my life a lot easier. To be honest, I love Net-A-Porter, Modaoperandi, Mytheresa and Matchesfashion.com, but also ASOS, H&M and ZARA. And I never go shopping for my son, I always buy from Childrensalon website. I even do groceries online and Amazon of course is a lifesaver. My days are very busy so I try not to spend time doing shopping errands, so online is absolutely perfect.

SHOP THE LOOK:

GEM STYLE: My jewellery style is classic and bold. I am Russian, I love the bling, but am also sophisticated. Jewellery is a big part of my life, unfortunately I can’t wear a lot of jewellery at work due to infection control and hygiene reasons. But in the weekend I always try to enjoy my jewels. I feel naked without my rings and watch. I keep my jewellery in a safe back in Amsterdam and every two weeks I change something and wear it. I love rings. My dream is to have every precious stone in a ring and I am talking big stones! I would like to have a pigeon blood ruby in rose gold, a drop of Colombian emerald and a yellow diamond necklace. A girl can dream, right! But I also like H.Stern.

The timeless insect jewellery trend has always been a part of permanent collections of my favourite jewellery brands like Bibi van der Velden, Annoushka, Jessica Pass and Iradj Moini. This summer it fuelled the inspiration of new Moritz Glik collection presented at COUTURE Las Vegas. And I couldn’t miss the chance to style a summer getaway look with his sparkly little creatures!

Along with Moritz Glik signature loose gemstone Kaleidoscope shakers I’ve created a buzzing layered necklace with ladybug and dragonfly pendants. This catchy combination is a perfect accent for my simple Cult Gaia white cut out dress! I had so much fun decorating my hand with butterfly tattoos in honour of the transformable bumble bee ring I’m wearing. Welcome to my gem hive!

“Bugs have always fascinated me! The first one I did was a ladybug – it’s said that when a ladybug lands on you it’s a sign of good fortune. So imagine having a gold and diamonds lady bug just laying on your neck all the time! Then I made the dragonfly, a widely recognized symbol of transformation and self realization, which meant a lot to me personally. The most recent one was the convertible ring/pendant/brooch bumble bee. I made it to raise awareness to the importance of these little creatures… Their extinction is already a reality in many places and we need to protect them for the sake of our planet’s future” – Moritz Glik

Thanks for stopping by! Don’t forget about an Other Stories hat and Skin Ceuticals SPF creme before you fly off to your sparkly adventures!

You want your diamond engagement ring to be as sparkly as champagne! Let me share with you a modern twist on the classic halo engagement ring from Michael M’s Defined Collection. After closely following all the exciting trends in engagement ring designs from COUTURE in Las Vegas, that I featured in a recent Vogue article, I discovered that pear-shaped engagement rings are the hot ticket item for modern brides this season. And I think you’re going to like how Michael M has redefined this classic cut.

When it comes to sparkle, round brilliant cut diamonds will give you that extra razzle dazzle. Designed for wearability and cut with the most possible facets to maximise its brilliance, round brilliant diamond can outshine the best of them. It’s not surprising that half of all diamonds sold are traditional round brilliant diamonds. We love the sparkle! My engagement ring is a cushion cut diamond, but I still have appreciation for timeless round brilliant diamonds. The brilliant cut was developed over six centuries ago and has 57 facets (58, if you include the culet). Radiant rounds are always a classic, but I am a big fan of nontraditional cuts, as I feel many of you are too.

The most popular cuts are round and pear, but Michael M combines both in one unique engagement ring! While the stones are more traditional, the setting is innovative as it encircles the centre round brilliant diamond and transforms it into other lavish shapes. This ring is an avant-garde way of presenting the traditional round brilliant diamond into a unique modern pear shape. This ring is set with .75 carats and is shown with a 2 carat round centre stone.

“Something that we struggled with for a long time is how to meet the needs of those people who enjoy the fancy shapes, but also give them something exciting, something different and allow them to still have the traditional. We wanted them to have both. The round diamond centre with elongated pear halo incredibly breaks out of the shape and makes the diamond appear enormous, but it also redefines the central stone so that’s why the actual collection you’re looking at is the redefined collection. It completely changes the way that the centre round brilliant looks.”

An engagement ring should look amazing from all angles and when you look at the intricate vintage detailing on the back, you can see this Michael M engagement ring truly is special from front to back. Michael M rings usually give you clean cut lines, but these redefined engagement rings are a refreshing break away from tradition.

If are looking for ideas for a chic city break or for an exotic destination, I’m going to have it covered. Here is my jewellery & fashion diary from the latest trip to Puente Romano Marbella.

GETTING THERE

The beautiful country of Spain has become my go-to destination to unwind and party, while enjoying its diverse natural landscapes. Read about my visits of El Lodge Sierra Nevada and Nobu Marbella hotels.

This time I decided to pay Marbella another visit and cross the luxurious Puente Romano Marbella off my hotel bucket list. Just a 40 min drive from the Málaga-Costa del Sol Airport and you get to the Mediterranean paradise situated on the beachfront of the Golden Mile Costa del Sol between Marbella and Puerto Banus.

FIRST IMPRESSION

I never need to leave! With 183 guest rooms, 3 luxury villas, 3 swimming pools, a SPA, 12 restaurants and a fun nightclub, Puente Romano Marbella resort is a destination in itself offering all vacation activities on the spot. As every detail and wish of the guest is thought after, no wonder Puente Romano is a member of ‘The Leading Hotels of the World’!

Set amidst beautifully landscaped botanical gardens with access to a large golden sand beach I knew right away I’ll leave Puente Romano Marbella refreshed and reenergised. Indulging my eyes in the charm of the pearl-white villages scattered across the Andalusian hillside is what I needed before my next sparkly adventure in the vibrancy of Las Vegas jewellery shows.

VILLA PEREZA

My stay at Puente Romano Marbella started with a tour of my VIP Villa Pereza. With four spacious bedrooms each with an ensuite marble bathroom, private heated pool and lush green area of 800 m² just for myself I was spoiled as never before!

Envisioned by bespoke interior designer Jean Pierre Martel, the lounge and dining area are infused with modern Mediterranean hues – one of my favourite styles, which made me feel right at home! Cherry on top: incredible sea views and direct access to the beach and hammock area.

SPA

Awarded Spain’s Best Resort Spa 2016 by World Spa Awards Puente Romano’s sleek Six Senses Spa has a wet area with a hydrotherapy pool, cold plunge pool, herbal steam room, sauna and hammam. With an emphasis on local products from Spanish mountain herbs to olive oil, I had a hard time choosing a treatment with so much signature massages and facials on the menu.

POOLSIDE

A cocktail by the pool was right what I needed after the flight. With three large pools it’s entirely up to the guests as to where they want to lounge. The Beach Club Pool is family friendly and located down on the sands presenting a joyous atmosphere. The Main Pool and Central Pools are surrounded by beautiful sub-tropical gardens and have a more laid back vibe.

DINING

With 12 restaurants at Puente Romano Marbella you won’t go hungry! From Michelin-star-holding chef tapas dishes at Dani Garcia Restaurante to fresh local seafood options at El Chiringuito where I enjoyed myself at a beach party party oganised by Casamigos. My personal favourites: Rachel’s for gluten free healthy snacks and Nobu Restaurant for signature Japanese dining experience.

PARTY

For slick nightclubbing, head to La Suite after midnight to hear international DJs in action. In the summer, claim a sofa at La Plaza and soak up the sunshine as you sip refreshing cocktails. How convenient was it to have a villa next door to Marbella’s chicest nightclub!

FASHION & JEWELLERY

Dress to impress! Prepare to chill by the pool in your best swimming suit and beachwear. Get my Maldives and Bali beach looks on GEMOLOGUE Style. With so many photo worthy spots, you’ll want to look all sparkly! I went for pearls & gold as well as my personalised pendant to feel at home wherever I am. And don’t forget your tennis shoes: Puente Romano has its own clay courts on site.

€100,000 GIVEAWAY

Hotels rarely do this, which makes it once in a lifetime chance! It’s your perfect time to win a dream Spain vacation with a group of 7 friends or family members at the Pereza Villa, where I stayed. Enter the giveaway under @puenteromanoresort competition post before 30th November 2019!

THE VERDICT

Puente Romano Marbella resort is a perfect destination for a chic getaway that’ll suit to all of your moods from lazy days by the pool to crazy night parties. The resort’s show-stopping seaside tennis courts, three pools and nine restaurants make leaving the grounds unnecessary.

What did you think of my experience at Puente Romano Marbella? I would love to hear what you think by leaving me a comment below. Thank you!

I believe in birthday getaways. It’s the best way to unwind and prepare your body for receiving the gift from the universe: an energy boost for the upcoming year! Last time I went to the spiritual island of Bali, this year I decided to pamper myself at Six Senses Kaplankaya in the lavish green scenery of Bodrum, Turkey.

On this special day I decided to share the love with my followers and organised a GEMOLOGUE Birthday Giveaway of the book about my birthstone: the emerald.

I started my morning with Turkish delight and freshly baked pistachio baklava, followed by a Kaplankaya Signature Hammam treatment with an anti-ageing green clay body mask infused with rose essential oil. Feeling refreshed and reenergised we took a Tesla ride to to a candlelight romantic dinner at Anhinga by the coast. A truly magical evening to remember and treasure for years to come!

To match the beautiful blue sky and the sunlight playing on the waves I chose a sparkly dress by Kukhareva. To feel even more special on this day I put together a unique necklace. Every charm I used is a good talking point, and there’s something talismanic about all of them.

My perfect personalised pendant consists of the following charms:

1. Quirky Samira 13 baroque pearl with a sprinkle of sapphires for my fun personality

2. Crystal from Brazil to keep me energised

3. Elsa Peretti Tiffany gold heart symbolising my endless love for this life

4. Little Mikimoto Tahitian pearl highlighting my sensual feminine side

5. Adjustable Monica Vinader sliding bead yellow gold chain for years to come

You can put together your own one-of-a-kind DIY pendant necklace too! Search for key personal ingredients – small rings, pearls, charms, gifts from the loved ones, family heirlooms, purchases to mark milestones, accumulated over the years – and assemble them onto a long chain. This will be your most personal piece of jewellery. It’s not what it says to the viewer, but what it means to the wearer! Learn more about the art of jewellery self-expression. ⠀

Thanks for stopping by! What is your dream birthday getaway? Share with me in comments!
