What are your favorite go-to brands for simple pieces like long/short sleeve tees, etc. – Jessica D.
Simple but high-quality tees are a staple in my wardrobe—I love layering them with other pieces year-round and rely on them often to serve as the building blocks for classic outfits. Some of my all-time favorite sources are Rag & Bone for my go-to white crewneck, James Perse for a more relaxed white tee, Vince for comfortable striped tees along with Kule and Saint James for the perfect striped long-sleeve tees. I’ve also been impressed by Everlane’s selection, from comfortable pima long-sleeve tees to simple cotton crewnecks at a very affordable price. They have all different cuts and fabrics available, so I’m sure anyone could find their ideal tee from their selection!
Would you mind sharing your suggestions for nice bed linens? Between all of your travels and lovely sense of style, I figured you would know which brands have the best comfy, cozy bedding. – Jennifer V.
I couldn’t believe how much my sleep improved a few years ago when we invested in an excellent-quality mattress and bedding for the first time. Since then, I’ve come to believe that your bed should be the most comfortable place on earth to you! As far as bedding goes, we rotate between a few of our favorite luxury brands (like D. Porthault, Matouk, and Hill House), as well as a few more affordable, but still incredibly comfortable, options from Serena & Lily, Biscuit Home, and Roller Rabbit. For a one-stop shop for all bedding needs, we love Parachute Home and used their bedding throughout our NYC apartment (as seen here) when we had to decorate from scratch. Everyone has different preferences, so try to identify your ideal bedding fabric before investing in a new sheet set. Our personal favorites are 100% Egyptian cotton sateen and linen.
I think it’s been a few years since you’ve done a post on timepieces. I would love to see some watches at various price points! – Courtney M.
I don’t wear watches very often, but every once in a while, I love the crisp, timeless feel they can add to an outfit. My favorite time of year to wear them is in the fall paired with chunky knit sweaters, so I’m currently keeping my eye out for a new piece to add to my collection. My favorite watch styles lately are feminine and sophisticated, from classic gold chainlink watches (like this Michael Kors or this Shinola) and watches with slim leather straps (like this cognac Daniel Wellington or this blush Kate Spade). For an heirloom-worthy splurge, this floral statement watch from Gucci is absolutely stunning!
Some of the most popular Gal Meets Glam Collection dresses of all time have been classic, solid-colored pieces that dress up or down effortlessly. For example, the Edith dress from our very first launch remains a staple at Nordstrom, while almost no style has flown off the shelves as quickly as our Celeste dress when it came out last September (we’ve since brought it back in navy and black!). As I hope you’ve seen, we launched our July styles yesterday, including the brand new Gal Meets Glam Collection Kate dress. This style is almost a cross between the Edith and Celeste, with the former’s v-neckline and short sleeves and the latter’s comfortable crepe material and skirt seam. It’s available in three versatile colors–retro blue, cream, and rosetta–and when half of the women on our team added Kate to their own closets, I knew I had to ask them to help me showcase its versatility!
Annika: Product Sourcing/Styling Associate
Since Annika is constantly hunting down the most unique, beautiful products for us to share on the blog or style in our Gal Meets Glam Collection shoots, it’s no surprise that her own closet is perfectly curated. Her style is classic and timeless, no doubt influenced by her Washington DC roots, but she isn’t afraid to have fun with accessories, like floral statement earrings. She often opts for low heels that add polish without too much additional height on work days—these nude scalloped block heels are one of her favorite pairs. Since she shares my affinity for feminine details and all things pink, the rosetta shade of the Kate dress was the perfect choice for her.
Colleen: Creative Associate, Photography
Colleen is one of the newest members of our team and we are so grateful to have her! Her days all look a little different, since some are spent at her desk editing images, while others are spent running around town scouting locations, capturing beautiful photos, or assisting with shoots. Her style is colorful and laid-back. Since she’s a photographer, pieces that are functional for her active days are key. She opted for the Kate dress in retro blue and paired it with espadrille sneakers and raffia hoop earrings (similar here) for a classic, but comfortable, look.
Margaret: Social Media/Influencer Relations Associate
Margaret was one of our first team members and finds inspiration in all forms of art (she is also a talented artist herself). She is forever drawn to beautiful prints and eclectic pairings. She wore the cream Kate dress with our Mary silk scarf, plus pale blue slingback heels to add a playful pop of color. She loves how the simple silhouette of the dress creates a flattering blank canvas that transitions perfectly from day to evening.
Living so close to the ocean is one of my favorite things about Charleston, and when it came to our July Gal Meets Glam Collection, that’s where I found my inspiration. Sometimes, the ocean makes the perfect backdrop to a romantic, waterfront dinner. Other days, it’s the secluded place I go to stroll along the sand and skip through the waves, taking a break from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. Whether you live near the water, like we do, or the beach is a treasured getaway for you summer after summer, slip into one of our July styles and escape to the seaside.
These dresses, jumpsuits, and two-piece sets balance breezy fabrics with elegant silhouettes. In a romantic twist on a nautical color palette, every piece was designed to take you from summer days to evenings under the stars with effortless grace. I loved browsing through photos of classic style icons in their beachwear to help inspire these designs—as a result, you’ll find an array of details that nod to summers from decades past. There are evening-ready pieces, like the understated Delaney jumpsuit and chic Aimee dress, just right for special occasions and date nights, as well as more casual daytime pieces, like the floral Anya midi and feminine Shiloh dress, that are perfect for slipping into after a few hours at the beach. Dressed up or laid back, every look is best completed with saltwater-kissed hair and the glow that comes from living each summer day to the fullest.
The July Collection is available on our e-commerce site, as well as through the retailers and boutiques listed here. As always, our customer service team (contact here) is available to answer questions about fit, fabric, and more to help ensure you find your perfect dress. We can’t wait to follow along with your summer adventures in these new styles on galmeetsglam!
The Nordstrom Anniversary Sale opens to Nordstrom cardholders today! Since many of you share my love for shopping at Nordstrom, and have been so supportive of Gal Meets Glam Collection there, I knew I wanted to offer something extra special for this much-anticipated sale. We are proud to have six exclusive Gal Meets Glam Collection styles included in the sale that are a great mix of old favorites and brand new pieces! You’ll find the incredibly popular Beth dress from last year in a new burgundy base colorway, one of my all-time favorites, the Liza, in a new colorway as well for fall, a versatile new wrap dress in two gorgeous colors (navy and candy apple), and two new jumpsuits (Devin and Luella) that couldn’t be easier to dress up or down. These styles are limited edition pieces only available at Nordstrom during the Anniversary Sale, so don’t miss this brief chance to add them to your closet!
You met a few of our GMG team members in this post yesterday, and I’m thrilled that they are back today to showcase these exclusive styles. We really do live in Gal Meets Glam Collection in our office–on any given day, you’ll find multiple women wearing their favorite pieces. I always love seeing which ones become staples of these women’s closets, and look forward to seeing how everyone continues to style them throughout the upcoming fall season.
Annika: I’m always drawn to feminine pieces and the Beth dress has so many details that fit my style perfectly, from the beautiful floral print to the bow detail at the back. The fabric is soft and flowy while also having a good weight to it. I can see this piece transitioning perfectly into fall!
Margaret: The Devin jumpsuit feels so flattering. It accentuates my waist and is so comfortable to wear. I’ll definitely repeat this look and mix and match accessories to wear this jumpsuit both to work and to more formal events.
Caroline: The Kinsley is one of the most comfortable and versatile wrap dresses I have ever worn. The Candy Apple shade is the perfect color to transition my style from summer to fall. Most importantly, what really sealed the deal…POCKETS!
Paige: If I’m not wearing black, I’m likely embracing my boho. I chose the Liza dress for the print and the silhouette. It’s loose and has plenty of movement, but is so flattering. The fabric makes it easy to dress up for an evening out or dress down for a laid back lunch.
Judie: The light and airy Luella jumpsuit is so easy to wear, thanks to its comfortable fabric, cropped wide legs, and just a touch of feminine details in the shoulder ties and wrapped front. l wore it with simple raffia slides, but would also pair it with heels to dress it up.
Colleen: The Kinsley dress checks all the boxes for me. Its elegant shape makes it great for a dressy night out, but it is comfortable enough to wear all day. The deep navy is perfect for every season, making this a new staple in my closet.
Especially in the summer, when our schedules are packed with events and we’re often on the road, healthy eating and exercise can quickly slip to the bottom of my priority list. While I’m all for enjoying the occasional ice cream cone on a hot day, I know that I feel my best when I’m moving my body and fueling it with nutritious foods—something I need to remind myself often during such a busy time of year. Thankfully, everyone on our team shares my goal of living an overall healthy lifestyle, so we share tips and encourage each other often. Consider this post a peek into a conversation in our office! We’re not experts, but we’re all trying to care for our bodies and minds as best as we can. We’d love for you to join in the conversation by sharing your own best tips and favorite practices for staying healthy this summer in the comments.
What are your favorite ways to exercise in the summer?
Thomas and I love to get outside this time of year and switch it up from the normal indoor classes we do. We’ll wake up extra early to go play tennis before the summer sun makes it too hot or go for a long walk on a weekend morning. Lately we’ve been spending more time at the beach and have been walking knee deep in the water, parallel to the shoreline, for an extra little workout. It’s actually a great leg exercise, plus it cools you off, too! – Julia
I have a five-year-old human alarm clock, so getting up early (even on Saturday morning) for the coolest part of the day is given at our house! After a quick breakfast, my son and I put on our tennis clothes and head to the court. I hit him three baskets of balls and he hits me one. Repeat. It’s a good workout and a great opportunity to bond with my son, and to share something with him that I once loved as a young girl. – Paige
I spend the early morning and evening hours of each day taking my dog on a walk around the neighborhood. He is a large lab who walks at a fairly quick pace, so I usually get a pretty good workout. It’s a wonderful way to spend time with him and we both return feeling a little more relaxed. – Judie
What is your favorite active way to spend a summer day?
I imagine a fun active weekend day to include a walk in the morning, a bike ride in the early afternoon, kayaking at some point during the day, and an evening tennis match with friends to cap it off. Sometimes, though, engaging my mind in a different way makes me feel just as active as physical exercise. I’ve spent more time recently bringing a sketchbook out to the gardens near my home and observing and tracing flowers. I’m planning to bring watercolors and paints outside to begin some plein air painting, so that would be another way I’d spend an active day. – Margaret
Thomas and I start and end almost every day with a walk. During weekdays, it’s usually a short 15-20 minute one to get our bodies moving and our blood pumping before we get ready and head into work. Since the days are longer during summer, we can still catch a sunset after we leave the office, which is always a great excuse to get back outside. I’ve also loved heading to the beach on a hot day; that way, if I get too warm, I can cool off in the ocean. And floating in water is the best thing ever during pregnancy. – Julia
Having a two-year-old means every day is active! Our typical summer Saturday includes walking to the playground, kicking a soccer ball around the backyard, and setting up our inflatable pool—Minnidip makes the cutest pools that are both toddler and design-minded-parent approved. (P.S. Our whole family uses and loves this sunscreen, which is made with ingredients that are safer for both us and the environment.) – Lisa
What is your best trick for staying hydrated?
I carry my water bottle with me everywhere. I have my Yeti tumbler that’s great at keeping cold water cold and hot water hot. It’s so important to always stay hydrated, but even more so during pregnancy. My goal is to try and drink 10 8oz glasses of water a day. – Julia
While some people are naturally good at staying hydrated, I need a constant reminder. I set a goal each day and try to stick to it. Everyone in our office loves the Larq water bottle, and I try to drink around six bottles per day–three before lunch and three after. This little reminder makes a huge difference in my hydration! – Annika
I am not a huge fan of flat water, so I have to make an extra effort to remember to drink sparkling water. Thankfully, Thomas got me a Soda Stream last Christmas, which I use daily. It turns plain tap water into bubbly sparkling water in seconds. – Judie
What are your go-to healthy summer snacks?
Every time we spend the day at the beach, we pack a big container of cubed watermelon. My husband and I threw it into our cooler on a whim one day and it was the most delicious, refreshing snack for a hot day in the sun! For an upgrade, put a few cubes on a skewer and sprinkle the watermelon with a bit of crumbled cotija cheese and Maldon salt. – Lisa
Hummus with carrots is my favorite healthy snack because it is fresh and light, yet satisfying. There is a great variety of readily available hummus at any grocery store, and when I have time, I even like to make my own at home. My favorite simple hummus recipe is from What’s Gaby Cooking. Peeling the chickpeas makes all the difference! -Annika
Vegetables (most often bell peppers, celery sticks, and carrots) with ranch is my go-to these days, as well as nut mixes. I’m currently on a wasabi pea kick. Summery fruit like berries, kiwi, pineapple, and grapefruit often make an appearance in my kitchen, and I love making fruit smoothies in the summer. – Margaret
Up until my recent trip to Ireland, I would have just slipped on an old pair of leggings or shorts. Before the trip, though, I went to Athleta and found lots of comfortable new options in great solid colors that coordinate with each other, from soft tees, to loose cropped pants, to joggers, to thin pullovers and jackets. They are all perfect for walking, traveling, or just relaxing at home. – Judie
I am obsessed with my Apple AirPods when I’m out on a run, walk, or hike. I love to listen to podcasts, and with AirPods, your hands are completely free so you don’t feel constricted. – Annika
What is one way you care for your mental health during the summer?
Exercise is certainly a keystone habit and contributes to my daily wellbeing, but one of the disciplines that makes me the best version of myself is writing in the morning. I began writing daily in college and that, coupled with reading positive and insightful books in the morning, always brings me peace and helps me kickstart the day with a thankful spirit. I notice that when I fall off course, it’s because this activity hasn’t been prioritized. It’s always worth the time sacrificed in the early AM.- Margaret
Yoga! I practice Vinyasa yoga, which allows me to really focus on slowing down and breathing. The beauty of yoga is that you can make it as challenging or as meditative as you want. I rotate between practicing in a studio, at home, or at various outdoor locations around Charleston where they offer weekly community yoga. I always feel like my best self after I’ve spent an hour focusing on nothing but my mental and physical health. – Annika
Reading about the many cognitive benefits of studying another language inspired me to dust off my college French. The Duolingo app makes it easy to test into whatever level you need and to log your practice time from anywhere. – Lisa
Definitely one of the dressier styles in our June Collection, we designed our Phoebe dress with the many events that often take place during the summer at the forefront of our minds. We focused on a lot more daytime/casual styles this summer since we realized that was what our customers love the most and want to wear daily. Even so, we want Gal Meets Glam Collection to be the first place you go when you have a special occasion on your calendar, from weddings, to bridal and baby showers, to graduations, and more, so there will always be a few occasion-ready pieces in each launch. Along with Phoebe, I love the Joanna and Lula maxi dresses and the swiss dot Lenore dress, available in moss green or lavender, for summer days that call for an extra-special dress.
I’ve always been drawn to romantic floral and botanical prints, that’s why I’ve incorporated them into Gal Meets Glam Collection since the beginning. Even our home is filled with them- from the vintage Japanese botanical prints in our family room to our boxwood wallpaper in our master bedroom or the new whimsical floral print in the nursery, to most of the fabrics we used throughout. Inspired by the print on our Phoebe dress, I rounded up 10 of my favorite botanical and floral print pieces for this summer…
Our Phoebe dress from our June Collection is one of our dressier pieces for this month. We blended a romantic botanical print with chiffon for an effortlessly dreamy summertime look.
Throughout my pregnancy, I can’t count how many messages I’ve received from women asking me about the most bump-friendly Gal Meets Glam Collection dresses. Sometimes, they even admit to me that they haven’t told anyone else they’re pregnant yet! Their secrets are certainly safe with me, but in case anyone who hasn’t messaged me is wondering about the best GMG dresses to wear throughout pregnancy, I want to share my number one recommendation from our June Collection: the Teresa wrap dress, which comes in a blue and red colorway. You might find this silhouette familiar, as it’s our new printed take on our Addison wrap dress from last summer (which you can see here and here).
Our Teresa dress is an updated version of our Addison dress from last summer. This year, we brought the classic wrap silhouette back in a beautiful floral border print, available in both blue and red.
As I mentioned above, we took our Addison wrap dress from last year and brought it back in a print this season. This wrap body is one of my favorite silhouettes, as the waistline of this style is completely adjustable so you always wear it exactly the way you need to. Perfect for a growing bump- and I sized up! On the opposite side of the spectrum, this would also be a perfect dress for the very early days of pregnancy. The wrap style will always keep you comfortable, while the pattern, the pleated skirt, and the bow sash would all help conceal a new bump before you were ready to share your wonderful news. A few more of our bump-friendly new styles to wear throughout pregnancy are Heather, Lula (last seen here), and Stevie (seen here).
I wore the Teresa wrap dress for a day of exploring the town of Deià while on our babymoon in Spain. One of the biggest things we’ve realized from our customers over the last year, is that classic day dresses that can be dressed up or down tend to be our most popular and beloved pieces. Teresa is a prime example of a dress that fits right into that category, thanks to its unique print, timeless silhouette, and luxe cotton sateen fabric. I paired it with Manebi espadrilles, Cesta Collective woven bag, and white sunglasses for a vintage-inspired look that I always love. Whenever I’m in Europe, I can’t resist channeling the looks from some of my favorite classic movies, like those of Grace Kelly in To Catch a Thief or Audrey Hepburn in Roman Holiday.
Now that we’re home for the rest of summer, we’re getting back into our regular routine. Since it’s been so hot in Charleston, one of our favorite things to do has been to head over to Sullivan’s Island after work and catch the last bit of sunshine and cool off in the ocean. It feels particularly wonderful this time of year since floating helps alleviate the back pain I’ve been having and takes pressure off my growing belly. I love how quiet the beach is during the week and in the evenings, and I can’t think of a better spot to watch the sun set. We keep all of our beach gear in the back of our car in case we decided to take a last minute trip, and we keep in pretty minimal with navy and stripe beach essentials we’ve bought at Nordstrom.
My summer stripes have officially taken over. Since the Fourth is tomorrow, I’ll probably be bringing all of the items out to the beach with us for our day off. Since the timelessness of navy and white stripes are forever, I always gravitate towards the pattern over a bright color or fun print for items I’ll be reaching for again and again. Keep reading to see more of my favorite striped pieces for summer (like this striped t-shirt dress that’s perfect for a bump, this adorable tie shoulder top that’s under $40 and this striped coverup) and I hope you all have a relaxing holiday tomorrow!
I’ve always loved a toile print and couldn’t wait for the arrival of our first Gal Meets Glam one with our June Collection. We took the blue and white print and put it on cotton, making two different silhouettes- our Lula dress and Matilda two-piece set. For our toile, I wanted to create a fresh, modern spin on this centuries-old tradition, there’s nothing I love more than updating elements I love from the past. It feels crisp and ready for a warm summer day in our cotton poplin. Our Lula dress in particular has been my go-to since the maxi style works with my bump, but I so wish I could squeeze into our two piece. When I was designing it last year, I could hardly wait to try on our first sample, but now I’m saving it for next year! Since I can’t get enough of this vintage print right now, I rounded up some of my favorite toile pieces I’ve found online below…
I love the modern take on toile that Tory Burch used throughout her recent collection, including on this feminine one-piece. The addition of animals and palm trees makes it especially fun and different.
Fabric has never played a larger role in my life that it has this year. Every month, I go through hundreds of fabric samples while designing and working on future GMG collections. This has not only widened my view of what is available, and taught me so much about fabric that I never knew before, it has also made me extra conscious of subtle differences in the textures and weights of different options. While this has been a great asset to the design and fabric selection process, it has made me extra particular about the clothes that I choose to wear or buy, especially during pregnancy.
During the warmer months, I’m constantly gravitating toward linen for it’s breathable, relaxed feel. Along with our own linen styles, like the Sylvie jumpsuit, the Hattie dress, the Ruth dress, and the Bailey jumpsuit, I’ve been wearing linen separates on repeat lately. I pulled out my cream linen Frame blazer (that I bought last summer) a few weeks ago for our babymoon and am loving the polished spin it puts on both a casual tee and pants (as seen here) as well as on my favorite sundresses (like here). This blazer is this year’s version, while this one is a similar, budget-friendly option. Especially if you work in an office, I can’t recommend adding a linen layer like this to your summer workwear wardrobe.
In Charleston’s summer heat, breathable linen is a must if I’m opting to wear long pants or skirts. Linen pants, especially, are perfect for travel—I have this white pair and love that they have an elastic waist. When worn with an equally comfortable linen top, like this or this, I know I’ll stay as cool as possible all day long. On those triple-digit temperature days that are right around the corner, breezy linen shorts or skirts are the next best thing to spending the day in a swimsuit (or, better yet, slip these styles over your swimsuit for a day by the water). While they don’t contribute much to my staying cool, I also love the beautiful, summery texture that linen accessories add to any look—I have my eye on these pink linen loafers and this linen handle basket bag.
I often opt for dresses over jumpsuits in the summer, but Sylvie is the exception. Its linen blend fabric is lightweight and comfy, while the tortoise buttons, puff sleeves, and bow detail create an effortlessly elegant look.
