Skillet lasagna is a quick and easy dinner idea. Everything in layered into one skillet for a simple way to cook lasagna. No need to spend hours when you can whip this up in about thirty minutes. It even has a few veggies hiding inside. This recipe is great when you don’t want to turn on the oven. If you have more time and want to fix and forget your lasagna try this crock pot lasagna. Both recipes are favorites at my house!
With this recipe, it is possible to have homemade lasagna in about 30 minutes. Comfort food made easy! You will love this alternative way to cook lasagna.
1 1/4 cups ricotta cheese or cottage cheese (I used low-fat cottage cheese)
1/4 cup water
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
1/4 tsp dried basil
1/4 tsp dried oregano
1/4 cup grated Parmesan
1 1/2 cups shredded mozzarella
1 pound lean ground beef
1 medium zucchini (diced (about 1 cup))
1 26-ounce jar pasta sauce
6 oven-ready (no boil lasagna noodles)
In a medium bowl, mix together the ricotta or cottage cheese, water, salt, basil, oregano, pepper Parmesan, and 1/2 cup of the mozzarella. Set the mixture aside. Brown the beef in a large skillet set over medium-high heat until cooked, about 5 minutes. Drain fat. Add the zucchini. Stir in 2 cups of the pasta sauce. Reduce heat to medium-low. Top the mixture with 2 lasagna noodles, set in the center. Break 2 more noodles each into half and fill in the edges. Spread the cheese mixture over the noodles. Break 2 remaining noodles in half each and lay on top. Pour the rest of the sauce into the skillet and spread evenly, then sprinkle on the remaining cup of mozzarella. Cover the skillet and simmer the lasagna over medium-low heat until the noodles are tender, about 20 minutes. Remove the skillet from the heat and let the lasagna cool for at least 5 minutes. After about 10 minutes most of the liquid was absorbed. Makes about 6 servings.
This cupcake stand can match any party decor! With just a few supplies from the home store, you can make a cupcake stand with plastic plates. The best part is that it easily comes apart and can be stored flat. There is also another bonus. This project uses inexpensive plastic plates. You can even use bowls. For sure this is an easy way to make a tiered serving tray that can easily be interchanged with different plastic plates and bowls.
The supplies for this project can be found at home improvement stores (like Lowe’s). The plastic plates are from Target. I also found some cool plastic plates at a local thrift store.
Supplies for Cupcake Stand
2 plastic plates
one knob that fits a threaded rod
1 – 1/2″ X 3′ round aluminum tube (there are cool square ones too!)
1 – #8-32 X 3′ threaded rod
1 package of #8-32 X 1 1/4 combo round w/nut (or one nut to fit the end of the threaded rod)
2 rubber washers 3/16″ X 1/2″ X 1/16″
11/64″ drill bit
(we did not end up using the #10 flat zinc washers)
You will have plenty of supplies left over. These would make great gifts!
How to make a cupcake stand step by step
Cut aluminum tube with a saw, making sure cut is level. You will need a 6″ length and 3″ length (these can be adjusted to your own needs)
Cut threaded rod into a 9 1/2″ length
Lightly sand aluminum tubes to make surface even and remove imperfections
Drill hole in the center of two plastic plates. It worked best to place masking tape where the hole needed to be drilled and drill from the front.
Put 9 1/2″ threaded rod through the bottom plate and put a nut underneath the plate.
Next place rubber washer on top of the bottom plate, place 6″ aluminum tube around the threaded rod.
Place next plate, a rubber washer, 3″ aluminum piece and then screw knob tightly to the top. The pieces can be easily removed and interchanged with other plastic plates to fit any party theme or color scheme!
If you a cake to display along with your cupcakes here is an easy way to make a wooden cake stand. It would also be a great cupcake stand.
Take your projects up a notch by embellishing them with applique. Pieces of decorative fabric are attached to another piece of fabric with decorative stitching. I made one of these monogrammed totes for a little birthday gift and it was quick and easy. You can even include a coordinating crayon roll. I purchased the totes awhile ago (okay years ago and found them in the “great craft room clean-up”). Find similar totes at large craft stores. Use this machine applique technique to embellish t-shirts, onesies for babies, aprons etc. No worries if you can’t find a premade tote bag. I have a step by step tote bag tutorial. Making a tote is a super easy sewing project.
something to applique, a tote is used in this project
pencil or pen
printer and paper to print the templates
Applique Step by Step
It just a few easy steps you can embellish a variety of projects. You won’t believe how easy it is! I use interfacing to make monogramming simple. HeatnBond lite is an two-sided iron-on interfacing that has a paper backing on one side.
Printable Alphabet Letters
You can use any shape but I used these printable letters. Each link below has the upper and lowercase letter. Click, download and print the free printable alphabet stencils templates. They are perfect to cut out for a template. It makes tracing letters a breeze.
Here are three different types of applique that you can use to monogram your projects with these letters.
Straight Stitch Applique
For this project, I am using a technique called straight stitch applique. It is the simplest method and easily dressed up any project. Once washed the edges of the fray can fray giving texture and interest. No worries if you don’t like that I show you what product to use to prevent fraying below. Another example of the straight stitch without interfacing is on this birthday hat.
Zig Zag Applique
These monogram letters could also be zig-zag appliques. This technique keeps the edge of the fabric from fraying. The stitch length on the sewing machine can be adjusted to sew a wide zigzag or close together to make a satin stitch.
I think reverse applique gives a wow. I think it is especially great for felt projects. You can see how I used reverse applique for this birthday crown.
How to machine applique
Trace your letter onto the paper (smooth) side of the HeatnBond Lite. The letter must be reversed. Following the HeatnBond instructions, iron it to the wrong side of the fabric that you want to applique to the tote.
Cut out the letter and peel off the paper.
There is now adhesive on the back (wrong) side of the letter. Flip the letter over and it is ready to go.
Again following package instructions, iron your letter to the tote bag. Keep the letter towards the top so you are able to easily sew with the sewing machine.
Machine stitch around the letter. You can also hand stitch around the letter. A blanket stitch looks cute!
I used fray check around the edges to keep the fabric from fraying. You might decide to let the edges fray—–it looks good too!
Finished! It is so quick and you have a really useful gift. These letter appliques could be used to monogram towels, shirts, blankets. The possibilities are endless.
I hope you will give it a try. Let me know if you have any questions.
