Have you ever wanted to know how to tie dye? Let me walk you through step by step how to tie dye a shirt and then turn it into a cool tie dye t-shirt bag is super easy to make takes only takes minutes to sew.

We once had a tie dye party and had so much fun with  squirt gun tie-dye . Sharpie marker tie dye is another great technique kids love.

DIY  Tie Dye Shirts

I used Tulip One-Step Mini Tie Dye Kit (found at craft stores)  and a child’s medium t-shirt. We already had a One-Step Spray Dye set that my daughter wanted to try. The plain bottles are easier to handle, but she loved wanted to try the spray bottles! There are many tie dye techniques and some require extra ingredients like soda ash and special dyes. This is why these one step tips are so appealing.

Note: We did not prewash our shirt. Someone was in a hurry to get to the project. Normally I would always prewash any fabric before beginning a craft project. However, in this case, it didn’t seem to matter.

How to Tie Dye

To make a spiral tie dye shirt a fork is a really handy tool.  Place the fork in the center middle of the shirt. Press down firmly (without going through the fabric) and begin twisting. Twist until the entire shirt is in a spiral. Tightly wrap rubber bands around the shirt. These tulip kits are super easy to use and include everything you need, even gloves! Just add water and you are ready to mix the dye and start dying. Be sure to wear those rubber gloves! Place dye in each section between the rubber bands. Make sure to really saturate the fabric. Placing the shirt on paper towels will keep the excess dye from running everywhere. There are many tie dye shirt patterns you can try. We love spiral tie dye patterns.

Allow to sit for about six to 24 hours. I typically place it in a plastic bag to keep from getting on other things.   Wash your shirt following manufacturer instructions. We placed the shirt in our washing machine (alone or with other tie dyed shirts) and washed with cold water. Once you have made your amazing tie dye shirt you are ready to turn it into a cool bag for the summer.

Tie Dye Ideas

What can you do with tie dye shirts?  How about turning it into a fun bag. You might want to make some shoes to match!

How to make a t-shirt into a bag

Lay the shirt out flat. Align edges of the sleeves and bottom of the shirt. Carefully fold the shirt in half. Cut around the neck and sleeves. Open up the shirt. Turn shirt inside out and sew across the bottom of the shirt. Turn the shirt right side out and you have an amazing bag!

Now you know how to make tie dye shirts (and bags) you might also like to have more fun with these 50 crafts and activities for hours of summer fun! If you are looking for more fun things to do this summer with your kids be sure to check out these fun crafts. Here is a Father’s Day gift that dad is sure to flip over! (pun intended) A personalized spatula makes a perfect gift Dads love! It is a unique gift that will make him feel special every time he uses it.

You can even make a personalized Sharpie mug just for him and fill it with this yummy mug cake mix.

    Personalized Spatula Supplies
    • Spatula with wooden handle – I found this handy bbq spatula at the dollar store. Any spatula with a wooden handle will work.  Actually, any tool would work.  How about making a personalized hammer!
    • Fine to medium sandpaper
    • Scissors
    • Mod Podge
    • Foam brush
    • Paint Pens (I used Elmer’s Paint Pens, however from the reviews on Amazon these paint pens look like they would be great too, especially if you are going to make a personalized coffee mug.
    DIY Personalized Spatula

This spatula is useful it is a personalized gift just for him!

If the spatula has any type of rubber handle carefully cut it off.

Lightly sand the entire wooden handle with medium to fine sandpaper. This will help the paint adhere securely to the handle.

Now you are ready to personalize! I am a huge fan of paint pens. They are a no-mess way to paint. The medium and fine tips allow a child (or adult) to write with paint with great success! They are also versatile! They paint on wood, metal, ceramic, plastic and fabric!

    Clear cache

With the paint, pens personalize the wooden handle.

Allow the paint to completely dry (about 15 mins). Once dry add a coat of mod podge to protect the paint.

Now, dad has a useful and heartfelt gift!

    Great Gift Ideas for Dad

These Father’s Day presents are sure to a hit!
