Valid

30 weeks. It freaks me out even writing it because that means Im just 8 weeks away from being full term. And babies can come early which means anytime between the next 45-60 days my life can change. Eeeeep. Too scary.

I Have Hair. Plus Stretch Marks ?

You know my hair struggles right – the whole PRP treatment etc etc…well… I wish my dermat had told me just to get pregnant instead cos right now, I feel like freaking Rapunzel . Rapunzel with shoulder length hair but it is SO good to be able to whip my hair around and try whatever style I like . I know it is but shortlived and I shall be back to my scraggly little noodly hair bits in a little while after delivery but seriously is there anything invented where I can keep pregnancy hair forever ? Tell ME. On stretch marks- I know all of you who message me on Insta go on about all the lotions and potions you guys are trying. Here’s my philosophy on stretch marks- Yr going to get them , specially if it runs in the family. No matter how many oils and potions you use you cant avoid it because your tummy is stretching out like a freaking balloon. How in the world will it not get marks ? I do apply Palmers Cocoa Butter and Organic Coconute Oil on my tummy religiously. I also use Bio oil from time to time but all my cousins who did the exact same thing, also got stretch marks so If you have any magical remedy do tell.

Why Am I Bawling?

So I consider myself to be a fairly emotionally stable person, apart from the random mood swings I undergo in a day. Nothing really disturbs me that much. But last week, honest to god for no reason whatsoever I sat and bawled my eyes out. The poor boy just stared at me perplexed asking me whats wrong but all I could say was “Nobody understaaandss what Im going through”. Nothing even happened but there I was crying literally on the top of my lungs for no reason. The next morning I woke up feeling totally normal and also like a complete idiot for the previous night but I think it was just the combination of hormones + general anxiety + getting overwhelmed as my due date edges closer. But in general, Iv found myself more high strung and stressed than usual. Iv been thinking a lot about how in the world I will manage a startup and a baby. I cant take maternity leave for more than 2-3 months at the most honestly , and I felt so bummed out and worried. Then I got a ton of messages from moms who started work in 3 months and felt much better :)

Major Shopping DONE

So after my little meltdown, I realised I needed to get some stuff out of the way just for my piece of mind. So took the mothership to this store called Dezine Kids (In Delhi they are in GK and in Gurgaon they are in Mega Mall). They had almost EVERYTHING on my checklist.  They do tend to push the most expensive option to you- so do your research before going. Like at one time hen I asked for pampers he pushed the hong kong pampers on to me and I was like , butts are butts the world over. Just gimme the Indian freaking pampers. The only thing left now is my stroller+ car seat, some basic nursing bra and pad thingies and a couple of other stuff. Everytime I tell the boy the cost of something he googles it on amazon and finds some random,  cheap , not branded alternate and is like…”Why aren’t you getting this brand instead?”. Ummm NO. When you want to buy a car, I dont be like – “Why don’t you buy this car instead”…its the same with a stroller. It’s a baby’s car okay, I need to get a sturdy one. Hmph. (Specially considering the boy just dropped a copious amount of cash on tickets to a cricket match in London next year, I dont think he has any right to complain)

My doc is having a surgery and I think I’m having a heart attack

I know gynaecologists are human beings and they are allowed to be out of action for extended periods of time BUT dear lord- please make sure my gyanec (Dr Anjali Kumar at Artemis) is fit and fine by the time my delivery comes because I will literally lose my mind . I trust her blindly, and she is the only gynaec I felt super comfortable with and if I now have to change doctors at the last moment I might have a nervous breakdown. I am preparing for backups but literally, I think my baby will refuse to come out until it sees Dr. Anjali in the room !

The Jhoola has arrived.

Imagine my surprise when the guard called me and told me my “jhoola” had arrived. Wait what?  I went downstairs to find a crib waiting for me. So I am using my cousins hand me down crib ( she got it custom made out of solid wood and I see no reason to buy a new one ) and I didn’t realise just how big it would be. She had twins , so I think she got the extra large size one and now my nursery room looks so freaking tiny , it has no space . Plus it took 3 days and 4 men to get the crib from downstairs into my room !!!! Spoke about it with my interior designer (fancy word for brother and sister in law) and they are doing some stuff to make it better. One thing I am SO excited about is a cupboard they are custom making for me. Its this adorable thing with movable shelfs and wicker baskets and I cant wait till it all comes together. Also- the wallpaper is set, and seeing that cute blue cloud wallpaper go up gave me my first little kick of excitement. And no, just because the wallpaper is blue does not mean Im having a boy people. Relax.

Weight Gain

So my last scan gave me a little bit of a scare because it showed my bubs tummy measuring smaller and that he/ she was underweight. The doc put me on protein powder which honestly are heavy enough to be a meal in itself. But I had to take them + eat a full meal + ensure my meal has sufficient amount of eggs, chicken daal etc. Plus I was super worried about it all through and kept googling myself to craz- nesss. BUT at my 30 week scan , it seemed all ok and the kid had caught up and was right at where he was supposed to be. YAY.

Am I Wierd That I Don’t Want A Baby Shower?

I love attending baby showers, they are super cute and the games I actually find fun. But honestly, I just don’t want one for myself. Part of it is because I have had some bits of complications along the way, and I dont want to spend a whole day celebrating till the baby is out ….but part of it is just random. Do tell me about your baby shower experiences …

When people ask me “How are you so public about your life” … I don’t really have a quick answer. Because see it started 6 years ago with my first ever bridal files. I was nervous about sharing all my pre-wedding preps on the blog and my mom was pretty unhappy with me being so public (Nazar etc)…but I hit publish anyway. What followed were monthly updates to my wedding, and a host of people who were so connected to it that on my wedding day I got flooded with emails (Instagram wasn’t around then) from people I didn’t know sending me the sweetest messages. Literally, everytime I would go to the mall I would be stopped by a bride to be saying how thankful she was to Peaches & Blush- even today some of you come up and tell me about how you read P&B during your wedding . I mean, we wouldn’t have started WedMeGood if P&B hadnt happened so I owe everything I have to this blog and the people who read it at that time. Then when I got pregnant, I was even more nervous about sharing anything, because this time I myself was like “Nazar etc” . So for 4 months, I went silent on Social Media, no posts anywhere until I was sure everything was progressing smoothly. Then, when I hit “post” on that first pregnancy post- it was like all my fears washed away. You guys were so amazing, loving and supportive but most of all SO HELPFUL. I really couldn’t have navigated this journey without the little bits and pieces of info you guys sent in, so ofcourse I have to give it back and share with you guys what a lot of you people have been sending in.

Hospital Checklist
  • Nursing pads & Nursing Bras
  • Easily accessible clothing for breast feeding + something that is comfortable and won’t hurt your stitches just incase you have a C-sec  like Mumsie wrap dresses or feeding T shirts / tights or The Mumsie Gown
  • Sanitary Pads (You bleed!)
  • Your Toiletries
  • Towels
  • Nappies
  • Diapers
  • Baby Swaddle
  • Baby outfits for 2-3 days
  • Receiving Blanket of Baby
  • Car seat for on the way home
  • Baby Wipes (I was suggested Water Wipes which are not available in India so I guess any wipes that are non scented. I have been told to avoid Johnson & Johnson & stick to Aveeno Baby)
  • Phone & Charger
  • Music if you want some in the labour room
  • Change of clothes for the husband – if your labour is long he won’t really be able to shower for a bit
  • Muslin Squares or something to wipe the babys mouth with if he spits up milk
  • A few large pairs of underwear that will get ruined (Hospitals do give disposable underwear but honestly theyr not the comfiest)
  • Breastfeeding pillow if you are planning to use one
  • All your ultrasound files plus consultations with the doc
Newborn checklist
  • For Feeding
    • Bibs
    • Muslin Squares
    • Nursing Bras & Pads
    • Breast Pump (People have told me to either get Spectra or Medela)
    • Bottles
    • Sterilizer
    • Bottle Brush
    • Medicine dropper/ spoon
    • Formula just incase you dont plan on breastfeeding or your supply is short
    • A Changing table – you dont have to buy one but earmark an area of your house which isn’t too low so you don’t have to bend and can comfortable change the baby. Then you can get a small changing mat put there.
  • For Bathing
    • Bathing Tub-Fisher price has a nice one
    • Towels- lots and lots of towels
    • Momjama
    • Changing mat
    • Massage oil- Personally a huge believer in good old coconut oil . Mom swear by it too.
    • Baby SHampoo
    • Cream such as Aquaphor
    • Wipes
    • Diaper genie (Basically to dispose of yucky diapers so they dont smell )
  • For sleeping
    • Crib
    • Crib mattress (Please get from a reputed brand there are safetly guidelines on these)
    • Crib fitted sheeets
    • Swaddles
    • Blanket
    • Crib sized Momjama
    • Mosquito net if you are using one
    • Baby Monitor
    • Bouncer/ rocker for colicky babies
  • For moving around
    • Stroller +car seat travel system: Basically brands have car seats with inserts that go directly into the stroller of the same brand. This way you dont have to wake your baby up when they are in the car and have to get out. So far I have been reccomended: Chicco, Gracco and Babybjorn
    • A Baby carrier which you can use till the baby is say a year old if you plan on baby-wearing. I definitely do cos I know Ill be taking office trips with the baby. I have shortlisted- Babybjorn, Ergobaby & Kol Kol Baby
    • Travel changing mat – I liked this “bed in a bag” concept by BabyJalebi its a portable bed for your baby and so if you take them out you can just roll it out , put your momjama on and put the baby on it
    • Diaper Bag- Like some from BabyJalebi here
  • Toys
    • Baby Gym- Mothercare/ ELC/ Fisherprice. New borns love it apparently
    • Rattles
  • Clothing
    • Mittens, booties, caps, onesies, t shirts , pants whatever else you need

Please add anything you guys feel iv missed out on below. All of the above is crowdsourced !!! F

We at P&B think MAC lipsticks are the best. But its always comforting to find some great dupes for less. So if you’re on the look out for budget friendly options that are just as good, here are some well documented ones.

(1) MAC Flat out Fabulous – A fuchsia plum shade that’s highly pigmented and gives a neat matte finish on application. A budget friendly product that comes a close second is L’oreal Color Riche Moist Matte Lipstick Glamour Fuchsia (INR 750).

(2) MAC Please Me – L’oreal Color Riche Moist Matte Lipstick Cherry Crush (INR 750) is a comparable dupe definitely worth checking out.

(3) MAC Ruby Woo – Arguably one of the most iconic red shades that suits Indian skintones. But if you cannot get your hands on it (or you feel its too drying on your lips) try Lakme 9 to 5 Matte Lipstick in Red coat (INR 480) or L’oreal Pure Rouge Freida Pinto (INR 750).

(4) MAC Mehr – It is a gorgeous soft warm pink that’s universally flattering. If you’re in love with Mehr, you might like Lakme 9 to 5 Lip & Cheek colour in Blush Velvet (INR 600) too.

Left : Blush Velvet by Lakme, Right : MAC Mehr. Image via – Debasree Banerjee

(5) MAC Velvet Teddy – The color is a sort of wheatish nude with a hint of peach that will look good on light skintones (it tends to wash out dusky girls). Colorbar Take Me As I Am – Bare Dare Pink (INR 950) and Wet n Wild MegaLast Lip Color Bare it All (INR 295) have very similar shades at a fraction of the price.

(6) MAC Russian Red – For cooler skin tones, its hard to find something as great as Russian Red. It is a true red that lasts ages, is super pigmented, though a tad bit dry. Milani offers an affordable alternative by the name Color Statement Moisture Matte Lipstick in Matte Confident (Rs 770).

(7) MAC Rebel – Among the more affordable brands, Wet n Wild MegaLast Lip Color Sugar Plum Fairy (INR 295) comes pretty close to the colour with a slight difference in the texture.

(8) MAC Twig – A beautiful pinky brown, a great MLBB shade for a lot of us. But if you don’t want to shell out 1500 bucks for it go for Maybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipstick in Touch of Spice (INR 585). Gorgeous colour at 1/3rd the price.

(9) MAC WhirlMaybelline Color Sensational Creamy Matte Lipstick Nude Nuance (INR 585) can give Whirl a run for its money. Seriously. Another close match is Nykaa So matte Lipstick in Irish Coffee (INR 399).

(10) Can you help us fill this slot ? Let us know a MAC dupe in the comments below.

Who : Aditi Patankar

Profession : Founder & Director, Mrs India UK and BrandWok Limited

Instagram : @aditipatankar

Aditi says, “I am a passionpreneur and the whole perspective of Mrs India UK was to re-define the myth of beauty. Emphasize talent, knowledge, social and leadership skills as key essentials to be recognized along with the beauty of an Indian woman anywhere in the world. Through Mrs India UK, I hope to provide opportunities to recognize and award Indian married women in the UK and internationally.

My skin type : Normal to dry and dehydrated due to the volatility of weather conditions.

AM routine :  I usually like products which are natural and gentle for skin. My regime can be called PCTsO/Me (Pre Cleanse – Cleansing – Tone – Serum – Moisturize/Oil – Exfoliate)

Image via – Northern Girl

  • Pre Cleanse : During the day, I simply wash my face with Dermalogica Precleanse.
  • Cleanse : I really like bareMineral products as they are gentle on your skin and suit almost all skin types, so it works well for all seasons beautifully. I use Pure Plush as Cleanser.
  • Tone : Toning helps your skin to remove skin debris, effectively leaving it hydrated and comfortable. I have recently started using Milk Makeup Matcha Toner which is vegan and I am simply loving it.

Image via – Daisy beauty

  • Serum : I use bareMinerals ETERNALIXIR™ Skin volumising oil serum.
  • Moisturise or Oil : After the above 4 steps, I moisturise my skin with a good amount of bareMinerals BUTTER DRENCH™ Restorative rich cream. This cream is extremely gentle on skin and simply smoothens away the roughness. There is an added advantage of this cream to be used before your make-up demands. If I oil my skin, I do not moisturise it as skin needs certain time to absorb oil and too many products may not really have a higher effectiveness. For oil, I use BOBBI BROWN Extra face oil.
  • For Eyes (Either Day/Night) : At times, many of us don’t really consider taking care of eyes, but I have realized that its one of the most sensitive areas that needs to be looked after. As I understand for many of us it cannot be a daily routine, I have started using elastic and collagen formulated Dermalactives eye lifting solution and eye cream.
  • Exfoliate : I do not go for facials so I prefer the traditional methods for making your skin glow. One of the methods is to soak one spoon of any rice + split & peeled masoor lentil overnight in water. Crush the same and apply that paste on your face till it dries and wash it away. It helps in exfoliating the skin. If not this, then, I like the Himalaya Herbals Apricot Scrub to Exfoliate. Exfoliating skin can be done once in every 2 weeks.
  • For Lips : Nothing, till date comes close to age old formula, Vaseline or Pure Ghee.

PM routine

During the day, I always apply some kind of make-up and to remove it, I prefer to use either make up remover wipes or Johnson’s baby oil. Apart from the above steps of morning routine, I prefer to apply Bobbi Brown Oil or Farsali Rose Gold Elixir Radiating Moisturizer (it’s an oil) at night. Instead of moisturiser, I prefer oil at night for retention and hydration of skin.

Skincare secret sauce

Now here’s the secret that I have used over the years. It is not necessary that we need to use high range or expensive products all the time. There are ample of good products which can be perfect for your skin type. If you genuinely love your skin, try what I do when its a big event. Get an Aloe Vera stem or leaf half a day earlier and put it in fridge, at least for a few hours. You must apply this either a night before or few hours before you do any skin care or make-up routine. To apply, you must slit the leaf into half and the transparent gel that is inside the leaf is your secret to a glowing and fresh face. This leaf has medicinal and antibacterial properties so it helps in treating the skin to its best naturally. In case you don’t have the leaf available, you can go for Aloe vera gels available these days.

Weekend Skin Ritual

Truly speaking, I prefer to have #nomakeupdays and its usually during the weekend (unless I have any events to attend). Our skin is made up of several layers and it definitely needs to breathe in fresh air and activate proper circulation to rejuvenate. So it is best to have #nomakeupdays once in a week.”

26 weeks can you believe it ? I’m just about through with second trimester and the final home stretch of this 9 months is here . I honestly thought I would have a lot done by now- like the nursery, and all the baby shopping stuff etc etc but I have zilch done. Zero. Work has been super hectic of late (Iv kind of been greatful its a welcome distraction) so I have literally done nothing on the baby front except get a lot of Gyaan from a lot of people.

A Few Baby Essentials

I feel so freaking lucky and fortunate to have a group of women who see my stories and read my blogs because all of you have been SO SO helpful through this pregnancy. Some of you have been messaging me with some items you guys think I should DEFINITELY splurge on. Two of you sent me 10 page excel sheets – how can I ever thank you. Let me know if you guys want a peek in on them they basically are hospital and baby checklists .

But for now these are some splurges which I didn’t know about a lot of people have been saying. The ‘essentials checklist’ is diff and has about 70+ items which I will do a seperate post on.

  • Dr. Browns Feeding Bottles: Apparently the best bottles around to reduce colic
  • Ergo Baby Carrier : Expensive but all my friends swear that the baby sleeps comfortably only in this one. The rest aren’t great
  • Medela Breast Pump in Style Advanced Breast Pump: Good for breast engorgement
  • Fisher Price Kick & Play Gym: So baby has alone time keeping busy and letting mom be free
  • Vaseline : My doc recommended I put vaseline on the baby in areas where the diaper elastic is , so it created a barrier between the baby and the diaper
Shh. Someones listening to us

The BabyCentre App tells me my kid can now hear us. Not just me- US..people I talk to . Perfect excuse to shut the boy up whenever you want. Like when he is annoyed and talking aggressively- Shhhh, the baby can hear you. Or when the damn football world cup causes him to shriek in the middle of the night- SHHHHH or simply when he hurls an abuse at someone …SHHHHHH ! Basically, fun at the expense of your husband- which is one of the few sadistic pleasures of being pregnant.

Im Snappy & Only Ice Cream Can Solve It

My team probably hates me right now and the boy has probably had enough too but Im so irritable and annoyed all the time. Well hellloooo- blame the 46 degree temperature on top a growing baby bump and the fact that I feel wobbly and off balance all the time PLUS need about 4 pillows to sleep. The other day, the boy tried to sneak one of the pillows while I was sleeping, I literally whacked him in the middle of my dream. Lol. Pillows- don’t touch a pregnant womans pillows ok. But the one thing that does make my snappyness go away is ice cream and Iv been having tons of it. Just had a scoop at Cold Stone Creamery ! But now I have a gestational diabetes test and Im worried I have it.

The 8 hour Antenatal Workshop

So my gynae organises this workshop for expectant couples and we had to be up and ready at 8 am on a Sunday to attend it  – all the way till 3 pm. I DIED. Even though it was actually very helpful, it was still a Sunday !! A lot of you guys also asked me what I learnt and to share my knowledge but it was basically – what happens to your body during delivery, which positions do you need a c-sec in , Lamaze breathing & pain management techniques, Epidurals  and baby care. (The funniest thing- our doc said the used to show a video of a live birth in these classes until a husband fainted looking at it . Umm..men, what are they good for really ?)  For those of you who want a two minute crash course of Lamaze – basically take a deep breath when your contraction starts , then a few waist level breaths, then a few chest level breaths , then as the pain intensifies take jaw level breaths (you cant actually do this so my doc suggested you say  ‘out-out-out’ repeatedly as it makes you breath at jaw level), then as the pain is subsiding go back to chest level, waist level and deep breathing.

Scan Anxiety

I think there has to be a new phobia for upcoming scans because I have it. I get scan anxiety every time a big scan is looming close. Blame it on the horror of the first trimester but I keep thinking- this time something will be off . Sigh . I know I am supposed to be happy and positive, but it’s so hard not to think of the gazillion things that could happen- I have a big scan due next week sometime and I am legit terrified.

Pregnancy Fashion.. What Fashion?

Honestly, I thought I would be all stylish and put together during my pregnancy- you know like the firang fashion bloggers . Layering denim jackets over bodycon dresses and flat boots and what not- but truth be told, I could not care less at the moment. The heat, the discomfort, the weight its all enough for me to put my hands up and say “This is the best yr gonna get today folks” and the best is usually a loose t shirt and tights or a shapeless, maxi dress.

If you’re expecting, you must have said goodbye to a lot of things – Adios, Alcohol! Sayonara, Sushi!

But did you know there are certain skincare / beauty ingredients that you should avoid as well ?

Retinol – Commonly found in anti-aging skincare; think overnight repair serums and anti-wrinkle creams. Brands like Dr Dennis Gross, Skinceuticals and The Ordinary have retinol based products but give them a skip during pregnancy. Experts suggest using a good sunblock instead as they are the foundation for any good anti-aging skincare routine. Kiehl’s midnight recovery concentrate can also be applied.

Chemical sunscreens – Apply sunblocks or physical sunscreens only. Opt for products that contain titanium dioxide and zinc oxide that don’t seep into the skin like Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Sunscreen and Skinceuticals Physical Matte UV Defense SPF 50.

Essential oils – Essential oils are concentrated and have smaller molecules which are known to cross into the placenta. This doesn’t mean you have to avoid them all but its better to dilute them or avoid them during the first trimester. Palmer’s cocoa butter is a good option to keep the skin hydrated. Kama Ayurveda also does some cool stuff like Extra virgin coconut oil and Dhanwantharm Thailam for Pre and Post Natal Treatment. Forest Essential’s Mother’s Stretch Mark Oil (Nalpamarathy Keram) is also considered safe to use.

Aluminum chloride – Present in deodorants and is best skipped for the duration of pregnancy. Additionally, some perfumes also have chemicals like Phthalates/formaldehyde/toluene that are a complete no-no.

Salicylic acid- AHA- BHA – A lot of anti-acne cleansers and exfoliators have these acid ingredients . (Steer clear of professional chemical peels as well). A good alternative is Cetaphil Gentle skin cleanser. The same brand’s makeup removing wipes and facial hydrating lotion are also safe to use. Kiehl’s ultra facial cleanser and moisturiser are also safe bets.

Formaldehyde – This ingredient isn’t pregnancy friendly and can be found in gel manicures, hair straightening treatments and even eyelash glue. Butter London though, has an entire line of formaldehyde free nail polishes that you can check out. Generally, look for phthalate free nail polishes and acetone free remover.

Ammonia in Hair dyes – Well the jury is out on this one. Honestly , very little of ammonia is absorbed into the skin if at all but if you are someone who likes to veer on the safe side you may want to avoid.

Girls with curls never have to worry about their hair being flat and lifeless. But they can also be rebellious and difficult to maintain at times. And we know you’ve probably been asked if you’ve permed your hair a million times :)

Kiran also has curly hair and we decided to ask her what products she uses and how she manages her hair, that has a personality of its own.

The Low Down

Who : Kiran Singh

Profession : Event Manager, Model and Blogger at www.thecurlyroute.com

Instagram : @thecurlyroute

My Hair Type : Naturally curly! At times it gets frizzy if exposed to heat for a long time. My scalp gets oily if not washed twice a week.

My Hair-care Routine

  • I oil my hair whenever I get time. I don’t get time to oil my hair every week but when I do, I use coconut oil.
  • I am currently using Organic Harvest Anti Dandruff shampoo & Conditioner for Damage Repair. I love these because they are made from natural ingredients and don’t harm my hair.
  • After towel drying my hair, I partition them in the middle and apply TIGI Bed Head On the rebound Curl Recall cream. This product helps in managing curls throughout the day. After applying this cream, I scrunch up my hair and let it dry naturally. I avoid blow dryers.
  • Sometimes, I use the Schwarzkopf Osis+ Curl Cream to set my hair. I don’t prefer using any heat tools as my curls set on their own after applying the cream.

Tips and Tricks

  • I don’t do anything special to my hair for a big event or shoot but I make sure to get a hair spa done at-least once in 2 months.
  • My advice to girls with curly hair is to try and avoid as many products as you can. I know its difficult since curls aren’t easy to manage but use minimal products. And do not use hair dryers to dry your hair.
  • Also, apply a bit of sunscreen on your hair before you step out in the sun; it won’t harm your hair.

Let’s take a detour from baby to beauty for a minute shall we ? You see, there are a few things in live that terrify me :

  • Needles & Injections
  • Crossing a road (Need to hold someones hand)
  • My favourite HG makeup item getting discontinued.

For me, my concealer is literally the ONE thing I wear everyday and cannot live without. Seriously..for my mom this thing is her household help who she says she cannot live without (I got offended that it wasn’t me and she told me the maid was much more useful to her than me…ermm ..hmph). But for me, shallow person that I am- I need my concealer to bid those dark circles away. I also have some special requirements from a concealer. I’m perfectly ok with my concealer not covering 100% dark circles but I’m not ok with it creasing into lines one bit- what I’m saying is I prefer a low coverage but natural concealer to a high coverage cakey one and for the longest time I had the Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener until recently , when I found out they reformulated it and now the same tinted eye brightener is this thick, messy goop that creases all over me. Sigh. Hence began the hunt for a concealer !

For the record- Iv tried most concealers on the market – Mac Studio Fix, Studio Sculpt, Moisture Cover, Inglot , Maybelline Fit Me (actually decent) , Nars  etc etc . I think the Nars creamy concealer is pretty high on my favourites list but the two up for dissection today are:

  • Mac Waterweight concealer
  • Smashbox Concealer

Ill keep this short – I LOVE the Mac Waterweight concealer. I’m not kidding, it is one of the best high coverage but still super natural and long lasting concealers Iv tried. It’s super comfortable , doesn’t settle into lines and gives a solid medium to high buildable coverage. Its a dream. The only part that is troublesome is the application. You have to get used to it- its got one of those sciencey dropper things and sometimes when you put too much, it can crease a little bit but I genuinely find this the best concealer out of all concealers I have EVER tried.

Pros of Mac Waterweight

  • Super lightweight & natural finish
  • Long lasting
  • Medium to High Coverage
  • No creasing at all !!
  • You need the tiniest most miniscule bit

Cons of Mac Waterweight

  • Takes some time to find the best application method. Swipe don’t pat is my reccomendation and wait for it to dry before making up your mind

The Smashbox concealer does a decent job and has good coverage but I definitely found that it settled into lines for me. Deal breaker for an otherwise good product. I also found it didn’t last the whole day on me which the waterweight one does .I need a solid yellow tone .

Pros of Smashbox Studio skin

  • Good coverage
  • Easy to apply
  • Natural looking and creamy

Cons of Smashbox Studio skin

  • Creases on me after a few hours
  • Starts flaking after 6 hours of wear
Verdict : A+ for Mac Waterweight and B for Smashbox

Price : 2100 for Mac and 2000 for Smashbox

Shade: Im using NC 30 in Waterweight – I would have usually gone for NC 35 but this is a bit darker than usual

Recommendation : My new , all time favourite, HG concealer is Mac Waterweight. Now if those people at Mac discontinue this I will seriously sue someone.

The Low Down

Who : Tarun Dosanjh

Profession : Esthetician, www.tarundosanjh.com

Instagram : @tarundosanjhskincare

Skin type : Normal to oily

“I have been obsessed with skincare ever since I was a young girl and I decided to pursue this calling right after graduation. I studied Ayurveda cosmetology in India and then went to New York to do an advance course in General Esthetics. I have been giving bespoke skin treatments for almost 19 years now, specializing in non-invasive, non-surgical skin methods to treat skin with hyper pigmentation, cystic acne, wrinkles or to simply rejuvenate it.

I help my clients create a gentle yet effective organic skincare regimen so they can get the maximum benefit from the treatments. I have been formulating organic masks and cleansers for my clients and myself, and I am in the process of launching my own skincare line soon. I believe in a holistic approach to achieving the best results using natural plant based products in my treatments to optimize overall skin health.

What I like most about my profession is the satisfaction I get by helping my clients look and feel beautiful from the inside out. The thing that I struggle the most with in my profession is convincing women that a lot of quick fix skincare treatments are really not good for the long-term health of your skin.

AM Routine : I start with cleaning my face with Son and Park Beauty Water. It is a gentle cleansing liquid, which doesn’t leave the skin dry and stretchy after the wash. I have been using a cleansing mask morning and evening for years on myself and even my clients. It has an equal amount of :

  • Kaolin clay which is soothing
  • Crushed oats that are hydrating
  • Goat milk powder that gently peels off the dead skin cells

Then I immediately tone up with cucumber mist. I put cucumber seed oil in a spray bottle with boiled and cooled rice water. I use it right out of the refrigerator to refresh and re-hydrate the skin many times during the day. It’s calming and tightens the pores while brightening the skin over regular use. This is followed by Immortelle anti Ageing Blend. I mix few drops of Immortelle with Origins Oil –Free Moisture Lotion to use it as a day moisturizer. I make Immortelle by mixing :

  • 6 drops Frankincense
  • 6 drops Lavender
  • 5 drops Cypress
  • 1 drop Sandalwood
  • And ½ cup coconut oil

For eyes, I totally believe in Origins Firming Moisture Treatment with White Tea. I use it morning and evening under the eyes. And finally Tarte Mineral Powder Sunscreen.

PM routine : The evening cleansing and prepping routine takes me at least 20 minutes and I totally swear by it. I start with wiping off the buildup with Bioderma Micelle solution, cleaning it all the way to back of the neck. Then I use the Coconut Sugar Exfoliator for which I mix :

  • Coconut palm sugar from the brand Sprig
  • Tru Olive Olive oil
  • Fresh lemon juice.

I apply a thin layer on the face leaving it on for few seconds to let it dissolve the dead skin cells. And then wash it off with cold water. I am big on masking and generally do it everyday, switching the masks according to the state of the skin. I love Blithe Splash mask soothing green tea. It is great for a natural quick glow and leaves the skin smooth and revitalized. For a day out in the pollution I like to use the Detox mask mixing :

  • Avocado powder
  • Strawberry powder
  • Honey powder

in equal amounts with water and apply to the face as a paste. It works as a great antioxidant and leaves the skin clean and fresh. For the days with water retention on my face I fix an Instant lifting mask by mixing equal amounts of –

  • Soy powder
  • Coconut cream powder
  • Marshmallow root powder

in water. This protein mask is anti-inflammatory and moisturizes the skin at the same time.

Another product I use is is Squalane oil. Inspite of being very high in moisture content Squalane oil is light in nature and gets absorbed easily by the skin. Few drops added to the cream or mask gives an instant moisture kick to the skin without congesting or leaving it sticky. I mix this with Super Aqua Cell Renew Snail Cream and wear it as a night cream.

Enzyme Peels : I love enzyme peels and generally do them once a week. My favorites are – Neogen green tea peeling pads and Eminence yam and pumpkin enzyme peel. PS: Try and do enzyme peels in the evening to avoid sun damage to the fresh skin and do wear a good SPF the next day.

Prepping for a big event : I usually do this routine about 5 to 6 hours before the event, so the skin gets some time to settle down for the concealer and makeup. Starting with gentle exfoliating waters like Cosrx clarifying toner or Wishtrend Mandellic water 5%, I prep the skin for the beneficial serums and masks to follow. Then I do the self-lymphatic drainage massage with the Guasha tools which is great for blood circulation and sculpting. And finally I wrap it up with Tarte tight and bright clay multi mask.

Skin secrets I swear by
  1. Moon juice beauty dust – I started having this herb blend in my smoothies few weeks back and found it quiet effective. Noticed a healthy glow on my skin within a few weeks of having this.
  2. Herb infused facial steaming – Herbal steaming is one of the easiest ways to get rid deep lying impurities from the skin. It helps with the blood circulation and enhances the effects of other skincare products. To make your own ‘facial steam mix’ put together: Lavender dry flowers, Coconut powder, Rose petals and Chamomile flowers. Store the mix in a bottle and infuse it in your facial steamer to get clear + clean skin.
  3. Gooseberry /Amla powder – This is something I have been doing for years. Soak 1 tablespoon of Amla powder in a glass of water and drink it first thing in the morning, leaving about some to just pat on my face the first thing in the morning. Anything with which the skin is first fed in the morning has a different effect on it then anytime later in the day. So why not give a vitamin C boost to well rested, well receptive skin early in the day.
  4. Summer Skin Tip – Any mask you apply, just add a few strawberries mashed to puree with a fork, in it. Strawberries are very high in vitamin C and in the scorching heat of summer; your skin can never get enough of vitamin C.”
