“I got you a new King’s Day t-shirt,” my wife happily announced over the phone. She’d just returned from a shopping trip while I was still at work. “That’s great. Thanks. My old one is falling apart,” I replied, because my old orange t-shirt really was in no condition for a royal celebration. “I know. That’s why I got this one when I saw it… There is one thing though,” she added, “It say’s King […]

“What day do your parents arrive?” my wife asked. She was sitting at the dining table, arranging various important dates and noting them down in our family calendar. She is very organized. Sometimes there are different coloured pens involved. “Err… Hang on. I’ll check.” I am not so well organized so I had to scroll through the emails on my phone as I lounged on the sofa. “The 27th,” I replied once I have found […]

Each spring I spend more time then I probably should trying to calculate the exact date Rokjesdag will happen. It’s not because I’m trying to plan my week around it or anything creepy like that. It’s just that as an expat blogger who writes about his experiences with Dutch culture it is useful to know these things. The trouble is Rokjesdag (aka: skirt day) is very hard to pin down. It never ends up being […]

Koningsdag (otherwise known as King’s Day) is simply put; the biggest party ever in the Netherlands. It is the day when the whole country goes nuts celebrating the birthday of the Dutch King, Willem-Alexander. It’s been a Dutch tradition since 1890. Of course Willem-Alexander wasn’t around back then so it was originally known as Koninginnedag (Queen’s Day). It started as a celebration of Queen Wilhelmina’s birthday and then Queen Juliana’s. Queen Beatrix skipped it (keeping […]

As I waited for my daughter outside her school I was slightly confused when two random children wondered up to me hand in hand. “Kunnen wij samen spelen?” the brown haired girl of the two asked. It seemed like she was in charge. At the very least she less distracted than her friend, the small ginger haired girl who was watching the group of other parents waiting nearby. In my confusion it took me a […]

When I first arrived in The Netherlands I knew very little about the country. I didn’t know the language, I didn’t know the traditions and after a few months I discovered I didn’t even know the name. For a long time I thought this country was called Holland (and yes, I named this blog before I found out). But it’s not called Holland. It’s called The Netherlands. If you look on a world map that […]

If you’ve ever watched Dutch children’s television you are probably familiar with Buurman en Buurman. It’s a stop animation show about two neighbors who (in each episode) try to build, fix or invent something. It almost, always goes horribly wrong. It does not take long for some small mistake to escalate as they try to find a creative, not well thought out, and sometimes life threatening solution. I love this show. Because it was originally […]

Raising children in The Netherlands has been interesting. Mainly because it has allowed me to watch helplessly as our daughter’s ability to speak Dutch slowly catches up with mine, and then overtake it at alarming speed. She was already correcting my Dutch at the age of three. However, she has had an unfair advantage. She is after all half Dutch. Having a Dutch mother (my wife) and a British Father (me) has made it fairly […]

The old year has drawn to a close and a new one has begun. I always enjoy the run up to this time of year. There is something I enjoy about wrapping things up, looking back over the accomplishments of the previous year and planning the goals of the next. It always feels like a turning point and a chance for renewal. My 2017 might not have been as crazy as my 2016 but it […]
