Fashion Flash Book Review: Lunch at the Bookshop by Peter Miller
Most people say that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. I disagree. I’m usually not that hungry and or short of time in the morning , but lunch is another matter. By noon I need a nice bite to keep me going. But standard offerings– pizza, tuna on rye or a burger– get pretty boring. Many lunch offerings are not that healthy being packed with fat, calories and salt.
My lunchtime options took a giant leap when I found “ Lunch At The Shop” at the uber cool Chelsea markets. The premise was simple and original– lunch should be easy, quick to prepare and packed with healthy ingredients. The author, Peter Miller, owns a gorgeous bookshop near the legendary Pike Place market in Seattle. He started preparing a staff lunch at the shop using fresh produce , breads and cookies from the market. That was ten years ago and in that time he developed dozens of delicious healthy meals that take less than 20 minutes to prepare. Soups likes sausage and cannellini beans, lentil and avocado salads on a bed of sliced tomatoes and sandwiches of brie and sliced pear are both fresh and familiar.
Lunch At The Shop offers new ways to combine your favorite ingredients. The author emphasizes that every dish needs to start with fresh ingredients, not leftovers. Most of the recipes start with great bread or pasta, sparkling fresh veggies and a healthy glug of olive oil. These recipes can be used to feed several friends or modified for a lovely solitary lunch. At lunchtime I used to stand in front of the frig hoping for inspiration. Now I have Lunch at the Shop to guide me.

Fashion Flash Research Report: Supplements to Control Acne Breakouts
Acne breakouts affects more than 40 million Americans each year. Usually thought of as a teen age problem, acne is commonly seen in both men and women in their forties. There has long been an attempt to link foods like chocolate and fried foods to cause acne, but there has been little solid advice about nutrients that can help control acne.
That was then. This is now. Studies published in American Journal of Clinical Nutrition show that two supplements can actually breakouts– as much as by 70%. Omega 3 fatty acids are found in fish, walnuts and soy beans and are valuable additions to a healthy diet. But this study showed that 1000mg daily Omega 3 capsules can reduce redness and inflammation commonly seen in acne. The same benefits were seen in supplements of linoleic acid, a nutrients found in nuts, acocodo and olive oil. Again in this case subjects were given a daily 400mg linoleic acid capsule and the results were equally beneficial. Most dietary studies emphasize nutrients from food choices, but these study shows that supplements can be at least as beneficial.
Another research approach found that a low carbohydrate diet like the Keto or Paleo diets showed a decline in oiliness and breakouts. This might be surprising since Keto diet is high in all types of fat, but the low carb levels seem to be the critical factor. All good news.
This week, Sheila of Painted Ladies is hosting Fashion Flash. She is a spectacularly talented make-up artist who shares her skill and style for looks that you can copy at home. I love her approach to smoky eye as well as the no-makeup look. I was especially inspired by her graded her sunset eye shadows that I used for a black tie wedding. My dress was a simple black satin gown, but the subtle yet colorful eyemakeup made me feel fabulous. Subscribe to her beautiful site today.
Fashion Flash Beauty Update: How vitamin supplements reduce wrinkles and dark patches on the skin
Like many people I take a daily vitamin supplement to make certain I get all the nutrients my body needs. Now a new study published in Dermatology reports that women given a daily supplement of beta-carotene for 90 days had fewer wrinkles and darkened areas than a control group. Beta- carotene, a form of vitamin A, is found in a wide variety of foods including cantaloupe, butternut squash and carrots and spinach. These results should not be that surprising since Retin A, another form of vitamin A, is the only FDA approved anti-aging product.
Most researchers recommend that we get our vitamins from foods and not supplements, but here is a study that shows the beauty benefits of a vitamin in a capsule. Beta carotene capsules are widely available in both drug stores and health food stores. The results were so compelling I ran out and bought a bottle of capsules for $12. So glad to have another tool in my anti-aging tool box.

Fashion Flash Book Review: Foods That Fight Cancer by Richard Beliveau
I am working on a new book that deals with lung cancer. In my research on nutrition and cancer I found an amazing book that is both honest and empowering. Beautifully illustrated and carefully researched this book is a balanced approach to the role of diet in cancer that offers solid information without over promising benefits. Foods That FightCancer opens with an accurate explanation of the way healthy cells become tumor cells. It continues with detailed explanations of key foods ( including tomatoes, green tea and fish) that are reported to disrupt cancer cell growth. Dr Beliveau passionately believes that red wine is one of the most complex and beneficial beverages on the planet ( and who am I to argue? His arguments were so convincing I cancelled my reservation at a French Bistro and had dinner at a Greek Taverna. Instead of a planned meal of pate and roast duck, I shared a mezze platter of roast eggplant, sauteed spinach, tomates, olives and cucumbers with my husband– accompanied by the prescribed glass of red wine.
Unlike many other natural guides to cancer, this book is upfront and honest about the three leading risk factors for cancer– smoking, alcohol and obesity. The information is so compelling that I wish the author had included some menus and recipes. Maybe that’s his next book.
This week the amazing duo of Jojami and Lana of Ladies Road Map are hosting Fashion Flash. I met Jojami more than nine years ago when I was just staring my site No Nonsense Beauty Blog. Fashion Flash Book Review: The Easy 5 Ingredient Ketogenic Diet by Jen Fisch
I have been gluten free for almost two years and I definitely feel the difference. My constant migraine headaches are a distant memory and I lost weight and kept it off. But as a type 2 diabetic, the gluten free diet can be high in carbs and it is causing my sugar levels to rise. Not a good thing.
I decided to lower all carbs with a ketogenic diet and that calls for changing the way I shop and cook . Right now I am too busy with our Beauty and a Book GIveaway campaigns, a new book with my doctor husband and working on the Midlife Influencer Summit 2020 to fiddle with complicated recipes. But a girl still has to eat so I was delighted to find a Keto recipe book with just 5 ingredients. I am completely in love with their recipe for creamy dill salmon and the sugarless chocolate mousse and cheesecake bites keep me off from diving into a brownie or Nestle bar. This five ingredient cookbook has recipes that are full of flavor, easy to make and loooooow in carbs. Definitely a keeper in my cookbook bookcase.
