For immediate release

An open letter to a gay person

Dear gay person,
Congratulations for being a perfectly normal human person.
You are not sick or mentally disordered.
You are not bad.
It is not your or your parent’s fault that you are gay.
It’s nobody’s mistake.
Indeed, there is no fault or mistake involved at all.
The Bible does not condemn you.
Of course not.
How could it condemn you,
when it says that you were wonderfully made,
and created in God’s own image?
How can the Bible condemn you,
when you are God’s beloved son or daughter?
Instead, feel bound by the Bible’s core moral teachings:
be prayerful, reverence God, respect others.
be loving and kind, be forgiving and merciful,
be honest and be just.
Work for harmony and peace.
Stand up for truth.
To do that is to follow the Bible.
To do that is to follow God’s way.
To do that is to love God with all your heart and soul.
To do that is to be a true disciple of Jesus.
Please do not try to change your sexual orientation.
Do not try to ‘heal’ what is not an illness.
The truth is that you can’t, anyway,
even if someone someday were to pronounce you ‘healed’.
You are different.
Of course, you are different:
some of us are left-handed, others are right-handed;
some are tall, some are thin;
some of us have pink skin, others are light brown or dark brown.
It is in accepting who you really are that will help you grow as a person.
You may need help from a qualified person to do this
(but before you consult any, do make sure that they are indeed qualified).
If you try to ‘heal’ yourself of your sexual orientation,
you will be doing yourself irreparable harm.
Do not try to suppress it.
Do not marry to hide it.
You would be doing harm to the one you marry too.
Do not try to change your orientation
just because one section of society does not accept you.
It is society that needs to change; it is society that needs healing.
One day, you may meet someone
with whom you can build a long-lasting relationship,
a relationship that is special, intimate, beyond friendship,
a loving, fruitful relationship in which you can help each other to flourish.
Of course, you are free to lead a chaste and celibate life.
That will be your decision,
but that does not mean you are no longer gay.
Even some straight people do that,
but that doesn’t mean they are no longer straight either.
Whatever your decision, please count us always as your friends.

Ittra miftuħa lil persuna gay

Għażiż/a,
Nifirħulek talli inti persuna kompletament normali.
La int marid u lanqas għandek xi diżordni mentali.
M’intix bniedem ħażin għax inti gay.
Mhux tort tiegħek u lanqas tal-ġenituri tiegħek li inti gay.
Tabilħaqq, mhu tort jew żball ta’ ħadd li xi ħadd ikun gay.
Il-Bibbja lilek ma tikkundannakx.
Dażgur li ma tikkundannakx!
Kif tista’ l-Bibbja tikkundannak,
meta skont il-Bibbja stess inti magħmul b’mod tal-għaġeb
u int maħluq fuq ix-xbieha ta’ Alla nnifsu!
Kif tista’ l-Bibbja tikkundannak,
meta int l-iben għażiż jew il-bint għażiża ta’ Alla!
Qis li timxi fuq it-tagħlim ewlieni tal-Bibbja, jiġifieri:
itlob, qim lil Alla, irrispetta lill-oħrajn,
uri mħabba u kun qalbek tajba, aħfer u kun ħanin,
kun onest u ġust.
Aħdem għall-ġustizzja u l-paċi.
Aħdem favur il-verità.
Meta tagħmel dan, tkun qed tgħix skont il-Bibbja.
Meta tagħmel dan, tkun qed timxi fit-triq ta’ Alla.
Meta tagħmel dan, tkun qed tħobb lil Alla b’qalbek u b’ruħek kollha.
Meta tagħmel dan, tkun dixxiplu ta’ Ġesù.
Nitolbuk biex ma tippruvux tibdel l-orjentazzjoni sesswali tiegħek.
Tippruvax ‘tfiq’ ladarba m’intix marid.

Il-verità hi li ‘fejqan’ bħal dan mhux possibbli,
anki kieku xi ħadd xi darba kellu jiddikjara li inti ‘imfejjaq’.
Inti differenti.
Dażgur li inti differenti!
Xi wħud minna huma xellugin, u oħrajn lemini;
xi wħud twal, oħrajn qosra;
xi wħud minna b’ġilda roża, oħrajn kannella ċara jew skura.
Huwa biss meta taċċetta lilek innifsek kif tassew int li tista’ tikber bħala persuna.
Jista’ jkun li jkollok bżonn l-għajnuna ta’ xi ħadd kwalifikat għal dan l-għan,
imma qabel ma tikkonsulta lil xi ħadd, kun ċert li jkun tassew kwalifikat.
Jekk tipprova tfejjaq lilek innifsek mill-orjentazzjoni sesswali tiegħek,
tkun qed tagħmel ħsara irreparabbli lilek innifsek.
Tippruvax toħnoqha.
Tiżżewwiġx biex taħbiha,
għax tkun qed tagħmel ħsara wkoll lill-persuna li tiżżewweġ.
Tippruvax tibdel l-orjentazzjoni sesswali tiegħek
sempliċement għax parti mis-soċjetà ma taċċettakx.
Hija s-soċjetà li għandha bżonn tinbidel.
Xi darba f’ħajtek tista’ tiltaqa’ ma’ persuna
li magħha tista’ tibni relazzjoni dejjiema,
relazzjoni speċjali, intima, lil hinn minn sempliċi ħbiberija,
relazzjoni ta’ mħabba li fiha tgħinu lil xulxin tikbru u tiffjorixxu.
Dażgur, inti liberu li tagħżel li tgħix ħajja kasta u ċelibi.
Dik deċiżjoni tiegħek.
Imma dan ma jfissirx li int ma tibqax gay.
Anki xi persuni straight jiddeċiedu li jagħmlu hekk,
b’danakollu ma jfissirx li ma jibqgħux straight.
Tagħżel x’tagħżel, imma, għoddna dejjem bħala ħbieb tiegħek.

Gay titwieled jew issir? Qed insaqsik din id-domanda għax hawn min hu tal-opinjoni li wieħed jaqleb gay għall-gost u biex ikun ipprova kollox f'ħajtu...

Din hija mistoqsija li kont nisma u nistenna ħames snin ilu jew ftit iktar meta forsi kien hawn ħafna inqas awareness mil-lum, anke minħabba li ma kienx hemm l-istess frejmwerk legali ta’ drittijiet bħal ma’ hawn illum. Wara dibattitu sħiħ li kellna f’pajjiżna meta qamet il-kontroversja dwar il-Conversion Practices fl-2016, kont naħseb li mistoqsija bħal din kienet sorvolata. Mid-dehra, il-fatt stess li qed issir din il-mistoqsija, u l-fatt ukoll li qamu wkoll ċerti reazzjonijiet favur il-Conversion Practices fuq il-midja, turi kemm fil-fatt, inbidlu l-liġijiet, imma l-mentalità ghadha ma nbiddlitx ghal kollox, u ghal xi uhud baqgħet fejn kienet, u ċerti ideat u misinformazzjoni għad għandhom għeruq fondi.

Illum ix-Xjenza mxiet ħafna u qed turina li l-orjentazzjoni sesswali hija realtà minnha nniffsha u mhix kwistjoni ta’ għażla, jew ta’ aptit, jew xi moda jew trend. Huwa minnu li x-Xjenza għadha ma waslitx b’mod konklussiv għal kollox biex tispjega l-oriġini proprja ta’ dan l-aspett fis-Sesswalità tagħna. Imma naħseb ix-Xjenza tal-Psikoloġija u s-Sesswoloġija llum huma ħafna ċari li din hija naturali u li tiżviluppa fil-bniedem fil-kors tal-ħajja tiegħu. Għalhekk, hemm min jagħraf li hu eterosesswali, u hemm min, jagħraf li hu/hi gay, lesbjana jew bisesswali. Din għalhekk mhix kwistjoni ta’ moda, aptit jew għażla, imma realtà umana. Ħadd ma jqum fil-għodu u jgħid, ‘Illum ħa nkun gay’, jew ‘għada ħa nkun eterosesswali’. Ma tistax illum tkun ‘gay’ u min rajk, jew bl-għajnuna ta’ xi 'prattiċi', ssir eterosesswali. Jista’ jkun, li tkun għadek qed tfittex, biex anke tifhem lilek inniffsek. Huwa wkoll fatt li s-sesswalità ta’ kull bniedem tevolvi u tiżviluppa iktar ma jagħraf lilu nniffsu u jikber f’dan l-għarfien. Imma din mhux xi swiċċ, jew xi ħaġa li b'xi prattika ta' konverżjoni tista’ tinbidel. Min jagħmel dan, jew forsi biss jipprova jagħmel dan, ikun qed jagħmel ħsara kbira lilu nnifsu jew lilha nnifisha fl-aħħar mill-aħħar.

Irrid ukoll ngħid, li min jargumenta li xi ħadd jiddeċiedi li jsir gay biex ikun tal-moda jew sempliċiment għal gost jew biex tipprova kollox, ikun qed jinsa fatt li għadu reali llum, u li kien iktar fl-imgħoddi: li tkun gay iġġib magħha – sfortunament – element ta’ stigma, preġudizzju u ukoll ċertu tbatija psikoloġika – għax qed ngħixu f’soċjetà, li fil-qalbha tagħha, għadha m’aċċettatx verament lil persuni LGBTIQ. L-aktar li wasslet hija li tittollerahom. Il-fatt stess li qed nitkellmu fuq dan il-livell juri kemm għadha sfida – għaliex sa issa stess irrid niġġustifika li neżisti u li jien dak li jien!

(Adattament ta' parti minn Intervista li saret fuq Il-ġurnal Il-Kulħadd, f'Diċembru 2018)

A Drachma Project in collaboration with Allied Rainbow Communities and Eden Cinemas and made possible through funds by Premju tal-President.

The Events

Friday 1 March at 20.00 at the University Chapel: A Conversation with Dr Nicholas Briffa and Rev Karm Debattista on Gay Conversion Practices.

Saturday 9 March at 21.00 (time to be confirmed) at the Eden Cinemas: Viewing of the film 'Boy Erased'.

Saturday 16 March 09.00-17.00 at the MXlokk Youth Activity Centre: Forum Theatre activity

'Images of oppression...images of empowerment' is a project for LGBTI persons using Image and Forum Theatre.

The project will focus on the relationship between sexual orientation and identity on one hand, and on religious faith and spirituality on the other hand. Through physicality, the participants will create images of oppression that reflect the personal and social tension experienced by LGBTI persons in struggling to integrate their sexuality with their faith. These images will serve as a catalyst to create acted out scenes of oppression that will be explored further in the Forum Theatre sessions. The participants will experiment with a variety of different alternatives and approaches to transform these scenes of oppression into scenes of empowerment. The engagement will allow the community to re-create the scenes in such a way that these can then be realistically transported into their everyday lives, or else provide them with interpersonal and intrapersonal skills which can be used in their lives to address the oppression. For legacy purposes the narrative of empowerment created by the participants will then be used as a basis for a theatrical script.

The outcome of this project is twofold: a) it will serve to reach out to the LGBTI community and offer Drachma LGBT more exposure which will result in supporting the marginalised even further; b) it will offer a space of empowerment to the participants that can lead to more integration in life and to better welfare.

Attendance is open to all adults over the age of eighteen (+18) and can be LGBTIQ+, parents or allies or any person interested in the theme. Persons interested in attending should send an email on drachmalgbt@gmail.com or contact 79253875 for further details.
