I don’t know about you, but as a busy Mom, it often can feel nearly impossible to be in the moment. Running to the next task in order to get it done so things move smoothly through and everything and everyone has been fed, clean and happy.

No matter how many things you need to do in a day, it is so important when you are doing them to be in the moment. This will not slow you down from the task you are completing, but help you enjoy what is in front of you and connect with yourself.

Take this moment to stop and listen… do you hear the ticking of a clock, cars driving by, the wind blowing or people talking? What can you hear? Now take a moment to scan the room you are in and take notice of everything that surrounds you. Look high and low slowly. Do you see colours, patterns that you may have not noticed before?

This is truly what it feels to be present or in the moment. There are no judgements but observation. When we are running around and disconnected, we cannot feel, hear, touch, taste the beauty of life we are living.

Approach each part of your day, focusing on being in the moment. Because life is precious and so are you, so you do not want to miss it!

Wishing you a lovely weekend!

Hello!

Are you are juggling everything all of the time and feel the pull of stress most days?

Everyone feels stressed from time to time. A little stress is healthy. But too much stress over a prolonged period of time, can be harmful to your health and steels your joy in life.

April is Stress Awareness Month! Doodle Lovely brings awareness, education and tools as a guide to help you better deal with your stress.

How can you manage your daily stress?

1) Drink lots of water – Even a little bit of dehydration can cause cortisol levels in the body to increase and lead to stress. So up your water intake! This way your brain can balance its chemicals and you can feel less stressed!

2) Get more sleep – This is tricky as stress often keeps us up! Start your bedtime routine .5 hour earlier if you can so that you can unwind. Put technology away 1 hour before you go to bed. Take a hot bath or shower. Do a quiet activity such as writing, doodling or reading.

3) Implement a morning routine – Wake up .5 hour earlier than everyone else, so you can enjoy quiet time for you to start the day!

4) Eat food that makes you feel better – Instead of grabbing foods that are high in sugar or carbohydrates leading us to often feeling more stress, check out these stress-busting foods, click here.

5) Relax through creativity – Spend five minutes daily to decompress through creativity. Start now.

6) Exercise – Walk, run, do yoga, or hold a plank for 20 seconds. Anything that can get your blood moving!

7) Implement breathing exercise – Click here for breathing techniques.

8) Plan one evening each week designated to rest – NO to-do’s or rushing around.

9) Say NO to anything extra you do not want or need to do!

10) Be gentle with yourself, do one thing at a time.

Pick one thing from the list above, implement and do daily. It is always reassuring to know that many things can help you reduce your stress!

As I was enjoying a little quiet time in a local coffee shop, I could not help but over hear giddiness, followed by a few awkward pauses and then gushes of stories that both people were tripping over to share. I soon realized that these lovely people next to me, were on a first date.

A first date can be filled with nervousness, awkwardness and uncertainty. It is all in the hopes to feel a connection. First dates do not always end with fireworks, but each date you go on, provides great learning into more about who you are, what you like and what you are looking for. It is a first date that opens a door to you!

I parallel a first date in the same way we feel when we are trying to get to know ourselves again. Sometimes it can be painful, unsettling and the awkwardness can be just the very reason we do not go on another date with ourselves again. But look at the flip side, dating can be fun!

What to do on your first date with you?

Try something you have not done for a long time or try something new. This could be going to a new restaurant you always wanted to try, pull out paints or markers and start to create, try a new recipe, try a new trail to explore, or light a candle and enjoy connecting with you!

How to enjoy a first date with you?

• Be open

• Show up on time

• Take time to listen to your heart, not your mind

• Be giddy & have fun!

• Be you

This month I encourage you to go on a date with YOU. Be open, try something new and enjoy your connection!

I was driving in the car yesterday with my children and we had a very insightful discussion about negativity and positivity. This came after my son had a grumpy moment at home. I thought I would chat about negativity hoping to bring awareness about how this may impact not only him, but others.

This subject ties in well with the winter blues. Lack of sun light, cold, windy days, being extra cautious around spending after the Christmas season can have an immediate effect on your mood, often resulting in feeling low. Irritability, short temperedness, depression, difficulty waking up in the mornings are all part of the winter blues. Be aware of your emotions, especially the negative ones!

As we travelled along, I listened to both of my children speak about negativity. Thankfully our destination was not far, as when I stopped the car, I immediately tried to capture their exact words, typing their responses as fast as I could on my i-phone notes.

These responses are right from my children’s mouths and provide great insight into how we all can implement more positivity in our lives.

Mom: What is negativity?

Children: Well Mom, negativity is a virus. Something that goes around and around in your head and then spreads to other people. Next thing you know it is all over the world and if we are not careful, this will end in a mass destruction of positivity.

Mom: So how can we overcome negative emotions?

Children:

  1. Express your imagination
  2. Spend more time with people you love
  3. Eat yummy & healthy foods
  4. Smile, smile, smile
  5. Don’t let words or names hurt you
  6. Think of sunshine in your day, like something happy
  7. Take a hike/walk in the forest, any exercise will do
  8. Step out into the fresh air
  9. Listen to happy music
  10. Take time out and sit by a window
  11. Spend time with your pet. Mom did you know they bring your heart rate down? When you stroke your pet, you will feel more relaxed and happy.
  12. Talk about it
  13. Do a peaceful activity
  14. Be creative – doodle, draw, colour, bake, cook, garden or take care of plants

So, there you have it! Take a moment to think how you may be feeling. Try the ideas  above to bring out your positive voice! This is not one size fits all, so you may have to try out a couple of these suggestions. But, when you find some that work, stick with them!

Wishing you a lovely and positive day,

How are you doing? I ask because I know there is extra pressure around this time of year.

Someone asked me the other day, “Melissa how do you keep so positive?” My response, “It is not all the time, but more days than not.” Truth be told, it’s healthy to experience all emotions. Including meltdowns and really BIG ugly cries! But, if you are noticing that perhaps negative feelings are weighing you down more often than not, perhaps it’s time to make a little adjustment!

Living an abundantly full life for many women includes: juggling constantly, adapting to daily changes, responsibilities and to do’s. Guess what? This is the quickest way to wear yourself down, leaving you feeling the least like yourself and less positive! Compound this with the holiday season and we can often find ourselves in a stressed out, overwhelmed state. (Enter Grinch) Negativity starts to take over, removing the ability to enjoy the seasonal yule tide. More often than not, our negative voices are subconscious and they can just fall right out of our mouths!

So how can you keep more of that positive mindset – especially during a full holiday season? This comes from a choice to be aware of how you are reacting and how you are with yourself and those around you. (Out comes Elf!)

How to start your positive mindset!

Be aware (look for the Grinch in you)

This can take a while but you can observe patterns within yourself. When you recognize a pattern (or the Grinch) stop it!  Start to speak differently to yourself and to others.

Check in with yourself (looking for the happy Elf)

Is there anything that seems to bring out your negativity? Are there people around you who are negative? There may be – such as family, and you cannot just say beat it! But you CAN set boundaries on how much time you spend with them. (Don’t smother the Elf) We feel much better when we are around people that are positive! Seek them out!

Can you see differently (identifying Grinch)

Look at a person that is being negative. Can you can see a deep-rooted fear of something in their life resulting in their (Grinch) negativity? By taking the time to see in a different way we become more compassionate which in turn helps us to be less affected by negativity. (Exit Grinch – Enter Elf)

Letting someone know (help in banishing your Grinch)

If you are comfortable, let someone close to you know what you are trying to work on. “I am working on bringing a more positive mindset to my life. Would you mind letting me know if I am speaking negatively?”

Positive posture (standing tall, like an Elf!)

Even if you are struggling to feel positive you can move your body! Try standing tall and straight, start moving your shoulders. You will begin to feel more positive and start to experience a big difference in feeling YOU! (Only Grinches slouch!)

Doing something kind (Elf all the way!)

This is one of the most wonderful ways to get out of your own world and truly forget about everything around you (just for a moment). Especially at this time of year, doing something for someone else is a wonderful way to increase your positivity. There will be no possible way for any Grinch in you to survive!

It truly is the little things. The way you choose to wake up and face the world each day, how you choose to react. Finding your own pace in life and how firmly or graciously you place your feet on the ground.  These are simple things you choose and can only come from you.

Each time you feel like the pressure pot is boiling and negativity (Grinch) is taking over, stop stirring, take a break from the internal dialogue in your head or with others. Give yourself a moment to take a breath and think about how you will choose to move forward! Will this be led by a negative Grinch or will this be positive Elf?

I hope this brings more Elf to you at this most festive (and busy) time!

Do you find the lead up to Christmas stressful? For many of us, this can be a time of sensory overload, excessive materialism and abundance of consumption.

Doodle Lovely is going back to nature this December and would like to encourage more calm, creativity and sustainability this month coming!

So what does this mean?
In a nutshell, it is about feeling good during the lead up to Christmas, getting closer with nature and appreciating the simplicity of what this can bring and what it can save! Not only in your mind, but also in your wallet!

How to bring nature to your Christmas
Bringing nature to your Christmas is the perfect way to carve ‘5 minutes for you’ and a great way to spend meaningful time with others! Here are just a couple things to get you started!

1) Spend time outdoors – Winter can be a lovely time of year to get out and go for a walk! Explore and see this season in a different way. Whether you have a little green space or a forest close by, enjoy the calming and recharging powers that nature brings. TIP: Remember to look for items that you can use for a nature table or creating decorations!

2) Create homemade decorations – Trim your tree with homemade decorations. Remember to keep it simple and have fun! Use things that are in or around you own home. Stuck for ideas? No problem CLICK HERE for inspiration.

3) Make your gifts – I know, you do not have time! But let’s be honest, would you rather go into crowded shops multiple times, or spend the day tucked in your cozy home, making gifts for loved ones? I know what I would choose! You don’t have to be a whizz or spend a lot on materials. Check out these GREAT gift ideas CLICK HERE.

4) Make your own gift wrap – Commercial wrapping paper is problematic in a number of ways! Fibres found in cheaper types of paper are not strong enough to recycle. Wrapping paper is often dyed and laminated and can also contain non-paper additives such as gold and silver colouring, glitter and plastics. And to compound all this, it often has sticky tape still attached to it.

So why not create your own SUPER EASY Doodled Gift Wrap by Doodle Lovely! CLICK HERE for inspiration and your HOW TO guide!

The most important thing is to start small and pick one thing that helps bring you closer to nature. This is the perfect way to enjoy more peace and happiness leading up to Christmas!

Do you want to know the trick to getting past feeling the pressures of your everyday to dos? Aim low my friend!

Are you someone who creates a bigger to do list than is possible in a day? You may be constantly setting yourself up for feelings of disappointment, bringing on stress, feeling you did not do enough – heck, not feeling as though you are enough! This all feeds into your negative self.

When aiming too high, we are often rushing through to get things done. We are not always doing things in a present state which takes out all enjoyment and quality control, and the more important things may be falling by the wayside. Aiming too high can mean we are overwhelmed and we do not get anything done!

Now I am not saying not to have big goals or work hard each day. But rather, each day when you ‘aim low’ you put less pressure on yourself. Expecting less means you actually do more!

Guess what? No more time wasting energy by worrying about what is not getting done.

So how does it work?

Each day write 3 things down that will move you closer toward a goal. This can be in business or something in your personal life. Then focus and get it done!

What will happen?

You create a list that is realistic and you will complete it! This is where everything beyond the initial 3 things is a BONUS!

Get ready because it feels great and has a significant impact on creating a mindset shift. Focus on more positives while leaving disappointment at the door.

All because I choose to aim low!

So as back to school is almost here and you start to fill up your calendar, start thinking about YOU! How will you can find little blocks of time to build on your own time for YOU? What will you do next month? Perhaps it is joining a book club, planning more time for exercise or learn something new!
