this project is also based on project semi-colon. an author uses a semicolon instead of a full stop when he doesn’t want to end his sentence. so the project was based on not giving up hope and making things better instead of resorting to suicide. the noose and the comma are a reflection of the project.

last february, amazon announced a $700-million dollar investment in rivian to develop an electric delivery vehicle. now ford motor company is investing $500 million dollars into rivian. and though the small numbers of electrified vehicles on the road today, this announcement is another sign that automakers are eyeing evs as an element in their future.

ford is already developing an electrified mustang and a battery-powered version of the f150, the best-selling vehicle in the us. ford declined to name the product it will build with rivian.

founded by ceo rj scaringe in 2009, rivian employs about 700 people at its michigan headquarters, technology and engineering operations in california and recently acquired a vehicle assembly plant in normal, illinois, for a bargain from mitsubishi motors.

“ford has promised a portfolio of electric vehicles, including a pickup truck, as well as other models,” said michelle krebs, an executive analyst at autotrader. “rivian has a well-developed, innovative approach to electrifying trucks that is ready to go. rivian has the benefit of ford’s leadership position in the truck market — ford has something like a 70% loyalty rate in trucks — with its wide distribution network and raft of potential customers, most importantly commercial fleet customers.”

is the united airlines new look bad? no. is it great? no to that too. it’s one of those happenings that’s not good enough to wow you at first glance that’s for certain. then you get used to it.

the oversize logotype reminds us of jetblue and may not work well on the smaller aircraft. the tired continental airlines globe, a sluggish choice, never rose to the rarified air of george gershwin‘s lofty rhapsody in blue anyway.

come to think of it haven’t heard a united advert for some time.

polo ralph lauren has launched earth polo, a version of its iconic polo shirt. each shirt uses an average of 12 recycled plastic bottles and dyed through a process that uses zero water.

the shirts are produced in partnership with first mile, an organization that collects and turns the bottles into yarn and, ultimately, fabric. the new fibers will also be used for existing performance wear already made of polyfibers, which are popular for their ability to wick away moisture.

david lauren, the youngest son of the company’s founder and its chief innovation officer, told the associated press ahead of the announcement that the new shirt is part of a broader strategy of fresh environmental goals throughout the manufacturing process.

“every day we’re learning about what’s happened with global warming and what’s happening all around the world, and our employees and our customers are really feeling that it’s time to step up and make a difference,” lauren said.

among the company’s other goals: the use of 100% sustainably sourced cotton by 2025 and 100% recyclable or sustainably sourced packaging materials by the same year.

the earth polo isn’t the first of its kind. smaller brands around the world are using repurposed and recycled materials. it’s notable, other fashion leaders are also getting more aggressive on the environment.

late last year, burberry and h&m were among fashion stakeholders to sign on to the fashion industry charter for climate action, launched at the united nations climate change conference, cop24, in poland. the charter contains a vision to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. ralph lauren is not a signatory but is exploring the call to action.

the broader question of biodegradability of such fibers remains unresolved. for polo earth, the story is about recycling and reusing, lauren said.

“there’s so much out in the world that is not good for the environment. whatever materials we can turn into threads, we’ll start looking at other opportunities,” he said. “right now, we’re trying to make sure that what we produce is as good for the environment as possible, or at least helps clean up another problem. are we creating a new problem? i think we’re creating solutions, or at least trying to find solutions.”

the earth polo went on sale thursday, ahead of monday’s earth day, at ralphlauren.com and retail stores around the world. it comes in styles for men and women in green, white, navy and light blue. we’re unsure if the dyeing process is the reason for the limited color palette. the shirts are not more expensive than other polos.

above> known to many as ‘the forest’ the entire roof structure was suspended, never touching the vaulted stone ceilings.

it hasn’t taken very long to grasp that the wooden-frame roof is literally history.

the roof will never be fully restored to its former self nor is there a need. yet how many of the 13 million annual visitors have even perceived the oak beams and carpentry? DesignApplause reflects on a bit of the history and the genius.

[ the roof ]

the roof that was destroyed was the original made up of 1,300 oak trees – a number of 5,000 is often alleged. the oak trees to reach gothic height for this project were nearly 400 years old by the time they were cut. each beam supporting the 100+ yards of roof came from an individual tree. the roof was also known as ‘the forest’.

the wooden roof’s entire wooden frame sat on the stone walls, suspended over and never touching the vaulted stone ceilings. the beams were spliced together into one piece to achieve this span. the structure was impressively heavy made up of 500 tons of wood. the exterior surfaces were clad with 250 tons of lead.

though there are many revival ideas what happens next is difficult to assess. while we wait, DesignApplause ventures into eliminating restoration and winnowing options to replication — possibly via new technology — and inspiration. and if history sets precedent – the original concept has been altered each time during needed renovation – we predict inspiration will guide the way.

editor’s note: this post will be adding commentary on the spire, the architect, and master carpenter. please stay tuned.

the notre-dame fire, horrific, but an event that by its devastating design brings people closer together.

“utterly heartbroken.” ~ britain’s queen elizabeth and her son and heir prince charles said expressing deep sadness. The fire is a “catastrophe for France, for Spain and for Europe,”

spanish prime minister pedro sánchez tweeted the fire is a “catastrophe for france, for spain and for europe,” adding that the flames are destroying “850 years of history, architecture, painting and sculpture.”

german chancellor angela merkel offered her country’s help to rebuild a part of “our common european heritage”.

“notre-dame will always remain – and we have seen this in these hours – a place where believers and non-believers can come together in the most dramatic moments of french history.” ~ pope francis.

french president emmanuel macron told reporters near the scene that he will seek international help, including from the “greatest talents” in the world, to rebuild notre dame.

the notre-dame fire reminds us of the frailty of our architectural treasures. “we are used to thinking about them as eternal simply because they have been there for centuries, or a thousand years, but the reality is they are very fragile.” paolo violini, a restoration specialist for vatican museums, who added that the pace of the fire’s spread had been stunning.

as the embers cool, the world joins hands to restore an extraordinary diva.

dan marrone, an astrophysicist who sits on the eht’s science council affirms, “seeing is believing”

the first ever direct image of a supermassive black hole has finally been captured.

the historic image comes from the event horizon telescope, a network of 10 radio telescopes enveloping earth and functioning as a single receiver.

the emblematic doughnut shape of the black hole affirms what theorists have imagined once confronted with albert einstein’s general relatively more than a century ago.

the image shows the boundary between light and dark around a black hole, called the event horizon, the point of no return, where the gravity of the black hole becomes so extreme that nothing that enters can ever escape. at the center of the black hole, time and space become so curved upon themselves that the laws of physics break down completely

einstein’s equations of general relativity, defined modern gravitational physics describing gravity as a phenomenon created when matter warps the geometry of space and time. in turn, curved space and time (“space-time”) tells matter how to move. he published the general theory of relatively in 1915.

shortly after einstein produced the equations for general relativity, german physicist karl schwarzschild calculated that if an object is dense enough, it would create a bottomless pit in space-time known as a “singularity.” anything within a certain radius of that pit — a region known as the “event horizon” — would be swallowed by its gravity. a black hole (another name for such a singularity) consumes clouds of gas and stars that wander too close; not even light can escape.

einstein found the notion irrational debunking it in a research paper.

all the evidence suggested that einstein was wrong about black holes — and that his theory was right.

the cosmic portrait belongs to the black hole at the center of messier 87, the largest galaxy we know of, about 54 million light-years away. “you’re basically looking at a supermassive black hole that’s almost the size of our solar system,” or 38 billion kilometers in diameter, said sera markoff, an astrophysicist at the university of amsterdam.

the image was divulged wednesday at the national press club in washington and in news conferences in six other cities. dan marrone, an astrophysicist a the university of arizona who sits on the eht’s science council affirms, “seeing is believing”
