We all know that Botox is commonly used as an anti-aging treatment and for looking good, but doctors and researchers are discovering the treatment may help with depression and improving one’s mood and disposition. In a recent study published in the Journal of Psychiatric Practice, injecting the neurotoxin botulinum toxin (Botox) into a section of the forehead between the eyebrows and above the nose significantly improved depression scores by at least 27% for a group of men and women. Nearly all the patients saw some improvement. The area between the eyebrows is where frown lines appear.
The recent findings indicate that facial expressions are part of the circuit of the brain related to one’s frame of mind, thus improving feelings of depression. Anxiety, anger, and sadness all travel through a muscle called the frontalis. Botox inhibits this muscle and calms it, so it becomes more difficult to feel those negative emotions. Researchers are also testing to see if Botox is effective for treating bipolar disorder and social anxiety.
If proven effective, Botox would be a unique entry into the world of antidepressants. Depression is a common condition particularly among women, who are about twice as likely as men to suffer from the disorder. Approximately 12 million American women experience clinical depression every year.

Acne develops when pores in the skin become clogged with dead skin cells, bacteria, or both. There are many treatment options to prevent and help with adult acne, but can eating certain foods really help?
For years it was thought that many common skin conditions had no relationship to diet. However, recent studies have discovered that consuming more foods with omega-3 fatty acids, eating less dairy, and avoiding foods with a high glycemic index (sugar) can make a big difference in clearing up acne-prone skin. Eating these kinds of foods stimulate the production of hormones that can create excess oil which gets secreted by oil glands, increasing or worsening the symptoms of acne on the skin.
Studies reveal that the Western diet (which is high in calories, fat, and refined carbohydrates) is a leading cause of acne. Interestingly enough, acne is absent in native non-Westernized populations, such as in Papua New Guinea and Paraguay.
Foods you may want to consider putting in your diet:
Berries. This specific food group is often known as an antioxidant powerhouse, which can be great for reducing oxidative stress on the skin. Berries also have a low glycemic index, which can help keep acne from coming back.
Omega-3. Often found in fatty fish, omega-3 goes back to having a balanced diet of healthy fats. Fatty fish (mackerel, salmon, and sardines in particular) have been shown to heal the skin from within, which can help in reducing acne marks and scars. Omega-3s also contain anti-inflammatory properties, which can help with acne symptoms. Other foods that are high in omega-3s include pastured eggs, grass-fed beef, spinach, flaxseed, and soybeans to name a few.
Turmeric. This magical ingredient has numerous benefits for the skin including anti-inflammatory benefits, improving insulin sensitivity and inhibiting the growth of acne-causing bacteria.
Complex carbohydrates. These foods, including whole grains, legumes, and unprocessed fruits and vegetables, can all help in reducing symptoms of acne due to the low-glycemic index that they possess.
Green tea: Green tea contains polyphenols that are associated with reduced inflammation and lowered sebum production. Green tea extracts have been found to reduce acne severity when applied to the skin.
Dairy products. Examples of dairy products include milk, cheese, ice cream, and yogurt. Some people with acne may benefit from avoiding these foods.
Foods with a high glycemic index (GI) and a high glycemic load (GL). As a very general rule, more processed foods tend to have higher GIs and GLs.
Refined carbs. Also known as simple carbs or processed carbs, the main dietary sources of refined carbs are white flour, white bread, white rice, pastries, sodas, snacks, white pasta, breakfast cereals and added sugars.
Fast food items. Foods such as burgers, chicken nuggets, hot dogs, French fries, sodas, and milkshakes, are mainstays of a typical Western diet and may increase acne risk.
The Bottom Line
Some studies suggest that eating certain foods can get rid of acne and improve your skin health, but there is no magic pill. The best diet advice for great skin is to eat a well-balanced, wholesome diet rich in fresh fruits and vegetables, healthy proteins, and whole grains. Furthermore, what you put on your skin makes a huge difference. At Defy Nature in New London, we offer only FDA-approved quality skin care products for healthy, beautiful skin. Along with our many medical spa anti-aging treatments, every product is specifically selected and formulated to provide each of our clients the best possible outcome for glowing skin.
If you struggle with acne and facial blemishes, you might also be interested in receiving a chemical peel treatment. At Defy Nature in New London, we specialize in Vi Aesthetics chemical peels. Vi Aesthetic peels are different from other chemical peels in that they require no skin preconditioning, are almost painless, and have a minimal downtime after the procedure. Vi Aesthetic peels are also made with vitamins and minerals which nourish the skin long after the procedure is over. Many patients report seeing results in as little as one week, but 2 to 3 treatments are recommended for full effect.
If you are plagued by acne scarring, Bellafill, another treatment offered by Defy Nature, may be a good option for you. Bellafill is a 5-year filler and is FDA approved. Unlike other fillers that can fade over time, Bellafill creates a platform in your body to help improve the body’s natural collagen production and absorption at the injection site.
Call Defy Nature at (860) 442-5347 for your complimentary consultation with Kristin Kenny RN, an experienced certified injector.
At Defy Nature in New London, many of ourfirst-timeinjectable patients for Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin get the “willies” and are extremely nervous prior to the procedure. They wonder: will it hurt? Will I no longer look like myself? The answer to both is NO. Actually, it hurts more to go to the dentist! This simple process will go easier than you think.
Unlike facial fillers like Juvederm or Voluma, there is rarely any swelling after an injectable procedure. Stopping fish oils and aspirin one week prior to the procedure will also help.
Most of our patients at Defy Nature admit that getting injected is really not terribly uncomfortable, nor nearly as bad as they expected. It feels like a quick pinch, which occurs so quickly that you’ll hardly even know it happened. The good news is you will see beautiful results and notice smoother lines and wrinkles in about one week.
Kristin Kenny, our experienced certified nurse injector, will not make you look like someone else! She feels that less is better, especially the first time you receive the procedure. You will look refreshed and rested with beautiful, natural-looking results!
Following your first-time injection, Defy Nature offers—and recommends—a free follow-up appointment one week later. Kristin says, “Everyone responds a bit differently, especially the first time you have injections, so we like to see our patients post Botox, Dysport, or Xeomin to make you have a good response.”

Injectables, also known as wrinkle reducers, are used to temporarily smooth the look of moderate to severe wrinkles in certain areas of the face such as the forehead, frown lines, and crow’s feet. Individual results may vary.
Studies have recently discovered that certain chemicals in popular over-the-counter sunscreens are harming our beautiful coral reefs. Did you know that these damaging ingredients are banned in all other countries worldwide except in the good old USA?
When beachgoers apply sunscreen prior to going swimming, certain chemicals are brought into the ocean with them. Research now shows that the coral reefs in Hawaii and the Caribbean are exposed to over 14,000 tons of sunscreen every year with the greatest damage discovered in Hawaii. These sunscreens contain chemicals like oxybenzone and octinoxate that also enter marine ecosystems through sewage treatment plant outflows. Sadly, much of the coral has turned white and is being eliminated, and those that do remain are sparse. Data also shows that even very low concentrations of benzophenone-2, or BP-2, can quickly kill juvenile corals. BP-2 is an additive used in sunscreens and skin care products since the 1960s to protect against the damaging effects of ultraviolet light.
On May 1, 2018, Hawaii passed a bill that prohibits the sale and distribution of sunscreen containing oxybenzone and octinoxate. But in Connecticut and in the rest of the country, there are still no sunscreen and skin care product sale restrictions.
Why should we care about coralreefs?
Coral reefs are unlike anything else on the earth. In addition to providing valuable habitat for fish and other animals, they are an important food source for the people who live near reefs, and are vital to the world’s fisheries. Many cancer-fighting drugs are found on coral reefs. They act as natural barriers against storm events like hurricanes, typhoons, and even tsunamis.
At Defy Nature, a medical spa in New London, we sell coral-safe, chemical-free sunscreens and skin care products! We care about our oceans and our children’s oceans. The fewer chemicals we all put into the oceans today the better it will be for our tomorrow.
What can we do?
Stop using aerosol sunscreen. Much of what you spray leaves a residue on the sand which is then washed back into the ocean. Your lungs will be happier too, since aerosol sunscreens are easily inhaled.
Purchase chemical-free, all-natural sunscreens and skin care products at Defy Nature like Replenix. The Replenix line contains a wide variety of products, including anti aging cream, eye cream, and more. Visit us online at defynaturellc.com.
Do you bruise easily? Some people do. Think about it…No matter how experienced your injector is when a needle is inserted into your face (or lips) it makes perfect sense that bruising and swelling may occur. But, not always and can be avoided. At Defy Nature in New London, Connecticut Kristin Kenny, their Certified Nurse Injector has tips for you so bruising will be minimal or you may not experience any bruising or swelling at all.
Bellafill, Voluma and Silk are all anti-aging
wrinkle reducers that temporarily smooth the appearance of moderate to severe
wrinkles on areas of the face like your laugh and jaw lines. These anti-aging
products also add lost volume to the cheeks and some work great as a lip
treatment to define, shape and plump your lips.
Many of the patients at
Defy Nature complain they look tired on the outside affecting how they feel on the
inside. These procedures work great to refresh, improve self confidence and boost
general well being.
Let Kristin know if you take blood thinners.
If you take any blood
thinners, fish oils or even aspirin, stopping them a week prior to your filler
appointment. This simple step will help the bruising significantly., Any prescription or over-the-counter
medications, vitamins, or herbal supplements could also potentially add to
unwanted side effects from filler treatments.
It’s important to be completely honest at your consultation with Kristin prior to your procedure at Defy Nature. Call us at (860) 442-5347 to schedule your complimentary consultation!
Everyone has their own opinion on aesthetic treatments. What’sOK, what’s not, what justifies a treatment, what doesn’t? Sadly, people are quick to criticize and label women who do indulge in a little ‘work’. Worse still, this judgment is usually dished out by other women.
Case in point – Kylie Jenner was so terrified of the inevitable judgemental comments that she lied for months about her lip fillers. When she revealed she uses lip fillers on Keeping Up With The Kardashians she said: ‘I’m just not ready to talk to reporters about my lips yet, because everyone always pick us apart. People are so quick to judge me on everything.’ The reality TV star has since removed them.
There is an art to lip enhancement. Who you select to do yourinjections can mean the difference between getting a fuller, natural-looking poutor the dreaded over-filled “duck look.” The key to a natural, beautiful lip enhancement is in the injector’s approach. Patients at every age have different goals and motivations. For patients in their 20s, it can be the desire for fuller lips and better facial balance. For an older patient, an enhancement can address volume loss, a blurry lip line and wrinkles around the mouth.
For Patients in Their 20s
According to Defy Nature Medical Spa in New London, patients in their20s most often have issues of genetic lip imperfections like asymmetry, thin lips, a gummy smile or their expression might appear sad or angry. “It’s really about enhancement,” says Erin Azia, Practice Manager. “Patients this age tend to love the look of fuller lips. Our job is to make sure they look proportionate to the face. Kristin, our Certified Nurse Injector looks at the whole person sitting in front of her to bring balance to the entire face. Sometimes the most important decision she will make is what NOT to do and to always seek a natural look that will be barely noticeable to all but the patient.”

For Patients in their 30’s
Lips are at their fullest at the ages of 16 to 18. In the 30s, a fairly noticeable thinning begins to happen. “At this age, the biggest issue is the loss of collagen and Elastin, which results in thinning and drying of the lips,” says Erin. “Lip lines, which are caused by a combination of sun exposure and the natural aging process, can also appear. Increased muscle activity from daily facial expressions also contributes to upper lip wrinkles. We look to fill the lighter wrinkles so that they don’t become ingrained into the skin and inject a small bit of filler into the lip to retain its fullness.
Treatment: One syringe of Juvederm Ultra in the upper and lower lip
For Patients in their 40’s and 50’s
Patients in their 40’s and 50’s may experience even more drying and thinning of the lips. “When a patient reaches their 40’s and 50’s, the area around the lips, such as nasolabial folds (laugh lines) and oral commissure (corners of the mouth) also change,” says Erin. “They may become deeper and more pronounced, so that area needs to be treated as well to support the lips. The overall expression of the patient appears to change. So for patients in their 40s and 50’s, it’s all about restoration. Kristin uses fillers not only maintain lip fullness but also to diminish wrinkles that have already begun to set in.” Oftentimes, a loss of collagen, fat, and bone in the mid-face will greatly affect the shape of the mouth.
Treatment: One syringe of Restylane Silk in the lips and one syringe of Juvéderm Ultra Plus in the commissures (corners of the mouth).
For Patients in their 60’s
For patients in their 60s and above, Kristin addresses the same issues found in patients in their 50s. “At this age, it’s mainly about lip restoration. I focus on restoring fullness, addressing perioral lines and restoring facial structures around the lip,” she says.
Treatment: One syringe of Juvéderm Ultra in the upper and lower lip.
Full cheeks, smooth skin, plump lips: Some people have them naturally, while others get a little help from their Medical Spa like Defy Nature in New London, CT that specializes in dermal fillers. If you can’t quite tell which category a celebrity or someone you know fits into, well, that’s the point. The latest injectable treatments are easy to get (if not cheap), long lasting, and designed for subtlety. They’re also perfectly safe, but if you’re curious about fillers, these are the things to know before getting pumped up.
1. Fillers made from hyaluronic acid, which is naturally found in the skin can be anti-aging favorites.
First things first: Dermal fillers aren’t the same as neurotoxins like Botox and Dysport. The latter type “freezes” muscles to reduce wrinkles, while fillers smooth out skin by filling wrinkles. Collagen can be used as a common lasting filler like Bellafill and then there are well-known HA fillers like Restylane and Juvéderm that use hyaluronic acid. Thanks to its ability to store moisture, hyaluronic acid is responsible for giving skin a plump, hydrated look. It’s used topically to moisturize, but a cream or serum can’t restore lost volume—only injectable hyaluronic acid can. Once injected it can add to the natural plumping action, or replenish your body’s natural production of hyaluronic acid, which diminishes as you age.
2. One injection can make skin look plumper and smoother for several months, and maybe longer.
One of the reasons injectable hyaluronic acid-based dermal fillers are increasingly popular is their ability to add volume and decrease wrinkles with a single visit to the injector. Results typically last for 12 to 18 months, depending on the location of the injection. Research suggests that HA injections may stimulate collagen production, leading to fresher-looking skin in the long run.
3. Good fillers are invisible.
Trout fish pout and duck lips are a surefire sign of filler. But when expertly injected, fillers should look natural. “The changes we can make are so subtle that nobody would notice,” says Kristin Kenny, a Register Nurse Injector at Defy Nature in New London, CT. “Instead of seeing filler, they’d say, ‘Oh, I never noticed your eyes were green.’ “Subtlety is the goal.”
4. That’s in part because filler techniques have gotten better.
Take the lines around your mouth, for example. A decade or so ago, fillers were often injected into the nasolabial folds, or laugh lines, to literally fill the wrinkles themselves. These days, the goal is to plump and lift in other parts of the face for a more natural-looking result. “As you age, your bones get thinner, and the overlying fat pads slide down,” which makes the skin sag lower, causing deeper folds at the bottoms of your cheeks, says Kristin. She often injects Restylane Lyft right near the cheekbone to restore fullness, which lifts the face, reducing the look of smile lines in the process.
5. It matters who does your filler.
Injection is an art, so you want to find an artist whose work you like. That’s why it pays to do more than a Yelp search for recommendations. “People are starting to be more open about injectables,” Kristin says. During the complimentary consultation at Defy Nature, she advises patients to see before-and-after photographs of real patients. Every practitioner has different philosophies, techniques, and levels of experience. Be sure you communicate about realistic results and your expectations—it’s your face, after all. Dermal fillers are now only legally administered in CT at physicians’ offices & medical spas. Keep in mind you should see only see trained, licensed medical professionals for any injectable treatment. Just like any medical procedure, there are risks for infection, discoloration, and lumps if injections are done incorrectly.
6. Fillers can be used for prevention as well as to treat lines you already have.
Though there is absolutely no need to go running out for fillers before you even see your first wrinkle, people are starting treatments younger than ever before. According to the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, in 2015, the majority of member facial plastic surgeons saw an increase in cosmetic surgery or injectable treatments in patients under age 30. Many professionals in the aesthetic industry say that starting relatively young may have benefits. “It depends on the person, but I think earlier is better.” Kristin says. “Looking at my patient population, there’s no question that those who started earlier with small amounts are aging differently than people who didn’t. It’s much better to play the game of prevention than the game of correction.” But keep in mind, there are other ways to prevent aging, including wearing sunscreen and using retinol.
7. Different fillers do different things.
While the bulk of filler is made with hyaluronic acid, different particle sizes will deliver different results. “Restylane Lyft has larger particle sizes – think of them like the bricks of a foundation,” Kristin says. Those larger particles have the heft to “rebuild” thinned cheekbones, while a smaller particle size, as in Restylane Silk, works better for addressing fine lines and plumping lips. Know that the most natural-looking results may require more than one weight of filler.
9. If the price seems too good to be true, it probably is.
If you see a deal for inexpensive filler, be skeptical less than that, something’s off. You have to be careful that counterfeit and diluted fillers do exist. If the price seems too good to be true, there is a reason why. The price of these fillers varies depending on the amount of product needed—expect a treatment to run anywhere from $650 to $2,000.
10. If you love the look of your fillers, you’ll have to keep going back for more.
After about six months, the hyaluronic acid fillers are naturally broken down by the body. So, you have to get touchups once or twice a year to maintain the look. However, this is good news if you’re just want to try fillers once or twice since the effects will fade away without any long-term risks. It’s important to note that getting filler doesn’t stop your skin from aging completely, so you could need more filler to get the same results over time. If you want longer lasting results, ask for Bellafill, an FDA approved Five Year Filler.
Full cheeks are a symbol of youth — insert corny cheek-pinching joke from your grandma here — so it’s no wonder that an increasing number of men and women are seeking ways to create more fullness in this area of their face. One of the most effective ways to boost cheek volume is with temporary or permanent Injectable fillers, which can instantly add natural-looking dimension. That said, you should also incorporate medical grade skin care products into your regimen, as well to help with the surface of your skin. Today, we’re covering the full spectrum of options available to you, but first, let’s discuss why you may be experiencing a noticeable decrease in facial fullness.
Why Our Cheeks Lose Volume Over Time
We’re going to get straight to the point: reduced facial fullness is simply a part of getting older. With aging, we all lose and redistribute fat padding and facial volume. This results is a decrease in angularity and a slackness, which are symptomatic and typical of the older face.In addition to these fat pads decreasing in volume, there are also some structural changes that occur in both in our skin and bones. Facial bones also lose volume, and as Elastin declines, skin laxity and sagging increases. All these things together can result in a “droopier” and more hollowed face.
Some of the most common in-office treatments Defy Nature in New London offers for temporarily replenishing lost volume is injecting facial filler into and around the cheeks like Juvederm XC, Voluma and a new 5 year Filler called Bellafill. The goal, obviously, isn’t to turn you into a cartoonish replication of a porcelain doll, but rather to strategically correct volume loss that occurred over time. Adding filler adds contour to the mid face and, can make it appear more lifted. Typically, [filler] is placed in the midface and mid to upper cheek. The depth of injection depends on the filler being used. Some fillers are injected just above the bone like Bellafill, whereas others are injected into the dermis like Juvederm. Most people get these treatments to replace volume in the cheeks for a natural, refreshed look.
Erin Azia, the founder of Defy Nature also adds that to achieve optimum results, routinely using quality at home skin care products are essential following any procedure done here in our office. “We recommend to our clients the finest medical grade regimens available that are personalized according to the clients’ age, lifestyle, skin type and budget.” Defy Nature sells Neo-Cutis, Replenix and Skin Medica professional grade products that are only available in physician’s office. What is sold on-line may not be the exact same product although the label may look the same.

Whether you have acne, wrinkles or brown spots, traditional treatments have emphasized topical remedies and devices, but aesthetic professionals can help patients achieve optimal outcomes—and improve their overall health—by also understanding the role that certain foods play in reducing or exacerbating common skin concerns. The notion that nutrition is important to skin health is gaining traction. Just like diet affects your heart, kidneys and immune system, it plays a role in keeping your skin healthy. We need a balanced diet rich in antioxidants and healthy fats to maintain barrier function, normalize keratinocyte (the outermost layer of the skin) proliferation and preserve our extracellular matrix.
Nutrition for Aging Skin
At Defy Nature in New London, they recommend their clients follow a diet high in vegetables, legumes and olive oil. Studies show that most folks who follow this diet had the least amount of sun damage, while those who reported a high intake of meat, dairy and butter had the most severe skin wrinkling.
Low-fat diets are no longer recommended instead, patients of all ages should consume “good fats.” Walnuts, avocado, and salmon are good fats that maintain healthy skin and help heal dry, sensitive skin. It’s also important to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables because each one comes with a different profile of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients (natural chemicals that are found in a variety of plant foods.)
Because many aesthetic patients take part in detox or juicing diets, Defy Nature reminds their patients that juice is not as beneficial as whole fruits and vegetables which contain fiber—important for a healthy diet.
Diet and Skin Health
In addition to understanding the health benefits of fruits, vegetables, and good fats, patients also should be aware that food preparation may affect skin aging. Charring food through grilling or roasting at high temperatures could lead to higher levels of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), which adversely affect collagen and elastin in the skin.
Benefits in a Bottle
Using topical protection daily to fight against skin aging and photodamage (damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation) is also crucial to maintaining youthful skin. At Defy Nature they sell medical grade skincare products that are suitable for all skin types and age groups. Their best seller NeoCutis brand, that is only available in physicians’ offices, offers several products that are a result of cutting-edge research and technologies. They deliver powerful peptides and proteins that energize, protect and rejuvenate aging skin.
With proper nutrition for your skin, along with practicing moderate exercise and the use of good skin care products, your skin will show significant improvement and be beautiful over time.
