My name is Deepa Berar, I’m an Indian girl from Canada and this is my beauty, fashion and lifestyle blog. I love anything and everything to do with beauty and fashion! My style is inspired by both Hollywood and Bollywood.
Ok guys we are finally back with another podcast episode (and blog post for that matter) for you guys! I was having podcast issues- honestly the hardest thing I’ve had to figure out when it comes to this whole, online/social media world, plus travelling to see Derek and now..to Australia to surprise my bestie for her 40th bday!
Don’t worry I’m vlogging the whole thing so you guys will get to see all the fun. Anyways back to the podcast episode. You guys might’ve seen the Youtube video I posted of the interview I did with South Asian fitness guru, Sonia Jhas. Guys I’ve been wanting to meet this girl forever. She is killing it in Toronto, like you literally see her on every station.
Also I wanted to bring back the Inspirational Interviews series. I figured why not take the audio footage from the video and put that up on the podcast?! I’ve seen GaryVee and Oprah do it, so if they think it’s a good idea, well then why not.
I hope you guys enjoy the interview, it really is such a good one. Sonia goes into her journey with body dysmorphia, eating disorders and how she fought through all of that to get to where she is right now, which I have to say is pretty smokin hot and according to her, does not take nearly as much of a sacrifice as you’d think.
Without further aideu, here’s the video and the podcast audio is as usual, at the bottom of the page. Don’t forget to Subscribe on iTunes!
Happy Tuesday guys! Hope y’all are doing well. I’m headed off to see the kiddies in Ottawa tomorrow and you guys have been asking for another My Life Post so I thought I’d get one up for you before I headed over! This one is from another one of our fun Berar family parties back at Easter. I had just gotten back from my last Cali trip and it was really nice to see family again.
My brother and fam came down for the weekend which was really nice. We got to spend some good time with Kai & Rai. Isn’t Rai just adorable?! They both are too cute for words. We headed over to Little Monkeys play gym in my hometown Burlington on the Saturday. Ok seriously I was totally wishing I was a kid again cause that place is way too much fun!! So much for kids to do and climb and play, why didn’t we have things like this when I was a kid?!
The family was coming over on Sunday around noon so we figured we’d get up and ready a little early so we could shoot some family pics.
My Dad put his Panama hat on Kai. Too cute for words! He just turned 2 this past weekend, I have no idea where the time goes. It honestly feels like just yesterday we all headed down to San Diego when he was born. That day was so much fun, my parents, me, Dipti’s parents and her brother Hemant all hung out at an Indian restaurant across the street from the hospital while he was being delivered. As soon as we got the green light we headed over to the hospital to meet the little guy! He was the first grandchild in both of our families so we were a little excited. Ok a lot excited.
The family arrived and the fun began! For my makeup I decided to recreate the Deepica Mutyala makeup tutorial I followed for the YouTube video I posted a couple videos ago. I can’t get enough of this look!! It’s basically warm browns on the eyes, cheeks and lips.
It was so nice to see everyone. Distracted me from missing Derek for a few hours. Here are my cousin Daman, his wife Charan and our cousin’s daughter Pia. The nicest people!
The guys being silly and my Chachi. We definitely had a good amount of drinks that day for sure. Everyone was in a fun mood that day!
Ok saved this little princess for last. I mean. How cute is Leeya?! Swear she is so photogenic and looks even cuter in person if that’s possible. She’s definitely giving me a run for my money in the selfie department
So that was Easter! We are catching up slowly yet surely. Still having podcast issues plus I’ve been sooo crazy busy lately!! Have any of you started a podcast? Drop your links in the comments, I’d love to listen
Ok we’re playing catch up with the My Life posts! Let’s take this back to Creator Day with IPSY in LA a few weeks ago. Guys, it was so, so much fun and informative and just so inspiring! First off, lets start off with how incredibly gorgeous that flower wall is? It was done by Physicians Formula and the perfect backdrop to their new Rose serum.
We started off the day with a little breakfast. There were several brands that had booths set up which was amazing. Genbeauty can be pretty crazy so it was nice to be able to connect with the brand reps in a much quieter and more intimate setting. I got to chat with the ladies at Derma E, which has been a long time fav of mine for many, many years now. I love how natural their products are! I dunno, in my mind I am a wellness girl who eats super clean, exercises consistently and doesn’t put any toxic chemicals on my face ever. Lol, so far from the truth, but hey I’m a work in progress and we will get there eventually
They had some amazing, informative panels this year. Last year was good too, but I really loved the studio set up session they had. The speaker was Jeff who actually works at IPSY studios and does the filming so he definitely knows what he’s talking about when it comes to lighting, camera settings, etc.
Here’s little old moi. I posted this pic on snapchat. I’ve been having a weird moment with snapchat lately. I hardly ever use it anymore because I use Instagram stories more, but every now and then I miss it and go post on it. I dunno, kinda feels like it’s not really relevant anymore. Anyone else feeling the same?
Another panel they had featured Olympic gold medalist turned Makeup artist Michelle Carter. How awesome is that?! My friend Maryam and I got to chat with her after and she is just the sweetest. I can officially say I met an Olympic gold medalist. Really cool.
Ok guys I finally got to check out Hum. I’ve heard so many good things about this company. They make vitamins that focus on beauty from within- deep beauty??
I’m definitely going to try some of their products out and I will report back to you guys!
Ok easily my fav panel of the day was the one featuring Lilly Ghalichi!! I nearly died when I saw her name on the schedule. I absolutely LOVE her line of false lashes and yes I used to watch Shahs of Sunset. The panel featured a bunch of entrepreneurs with beauty lines (including the creator of Hum). We got to hear their stories on the many, many problems and mistakes they made while trying to launch their lines and how they overcame them. You guys know how much I love entrepreneurs, I mean it is what I went to school for!
We ended the day off with the infamous Genbeauty Cocktail party. This one was at Poppy nightclub in West Hollywood. The venue was nice, it was a little smaller but I loved how they had booths everywhere so we got to sit which is great for this old lady over here. Swear ever since I turned 40 I just can’t survive in heels anymore! Or can’t be bothered, same thing. It was so nice cause we got to meet a lot of the other creators and I got to make some new friends too
All in all it was an amazing day as usual, I don’t think the IPSY team can go wrong, they treat us creators so well. Can’t wait for the next one! Have any of you been to Genbeauty? What did you think?
Ok so if you guys read my last post you would’ve seen me talk about how I have been struggling with being in a long distance relationship and how it’s starting to affect my life and my blog. I just wanted to be real with you guys. I’m feeling a little more settled now and decided it’s time to play catch up!
If you guys follow me on my Youtube channel you probably would have seen the vlog Derek and I recorded for St Paddy’s day in San Diego. I’ve been wanting to vlog more lately so we figured it would be the perfect day to give you all a little sneak peek into our lives. Honestly guys, we had so much fun running around the city!! Derek got pretty into it by the end of the vlog and even helped me with the editing.
Let me know if you guys want to see more of these. I’m thinking I might want to even turn the My Life posts into a weekly vlog. Haven’t made up my mind yet, plus I’m still in Canada so that kind of makes it difficult, but let me know what you guys would like to see regardless.
So here is the vlog! I’ll be playing catch up on the My Life post next week with our Easter festivities last week and other stuff I got upto when I was in California. Also if you want to see a breakdown on the makeup in this video, join the Deep Beauty Facebook community!
Ok we are back on the blog! It’s been a minute I know. I’m going to be honest with you guys, all this back and forth, seeing Derek and not seeing Derek is definitely taking its toll on me. I know I try my best to be positive and encourage you all to look at life in the best way possible, but I’m human and I have my moments. The week I leave to see him and the week I come back home my life and my schedule get totally thrown out of whack. It takes a minute for me to readjust and also takes a minute to get over the sadness I feel when I leave him. So the blog suffers. My posting schedule suffers. And my emailing suffers because I honestly don’t feel like talking to anyone. Period. This is me being raw and real with you all because I think it’s so important to not just share the best moments, but share the real moments too.
With that being said, I wanted to share this video with you all because honestly the timing couldn’t be more perfect. I have my best tips on how to spring clean your life and trust me I’ve been putting them into action lately! Oh also about the podcast, I’ve had some technical difficulties which is why I haven’t been posting as consistently but I think I’ve figured it all out now so we will get back to regular scheduled programming next week.
Thanks for all your patience guys! Sending you all my love
Hey all! So in today’s podcast episode we talk to Salma Dinani from The Write Balance, South Asian Bloggers network and the South Asian Buzz. Salma is a blogger, wife and mother of 2 and to say she has her plate full of commitments would be an understatement!
She somehow manages to find the right balance between work and family life and has tons of tips for you guys in the episode! Honestly, I don’t have any kids but I definitely picked up some amazing advice from her.
Listen in and get ready to take some notes! You can connect with Salma through Instagram and check out her blog!
What an eventful week guys!! Feel like I should’ve vlogged the whole thing because so much happened. Btw if you guys ever want to see the My Life post as a vlog instead, let me know in the comments
So let’s take this back to the beginning of the week. I had a surprise visit by an old friend, Amrita. Her and I went to high school together but lost touch. However, she did grow up in the same city and was friends with Sonalee. They kept in touch so when I found out she was coming to town for a conference, I knew we had to catch up!
We headed to lunch at Puesto in Seaport which is right by the conference centre (you know the place where Comic Con happens). She was only in town for a couple days so I had to get her out to the beach as well so we hit up Pacific Beach too.
We ended up at this new place called Waterbar which is so, so nice. A little more upscale for PB and the view is amazing because the one wall is just open and facing the ocean. This was our view.
It was so good catching up with her and getting some good quality girl time in. I don’t know too many people in San Diego so I love it when people visit!
Ok so have any of you tried cauliflower crust pizza yet? Derek and I have been trying to be a lot healthier lately and upping our veggie intake so when we saw this at Trader Joe’s it was a no brainer. Guys let me tell you, if I only had to have pizza this way I would not be sad. It was so, so good for the fact that it was guilt free pizza. Let me know if you end up trying it!
We headed out to our fav burger joint in San Diego, Balboa Bar & Grille. They only cook burgers medium. The first time I was there I was a little apprehensive, but now I won’t eat them any other way if I can help it. Strange because one of the waiters back home was telling me that you can’t specify how you want your burgers cooked in Canada. Oh, and here’s a pic of my jalapeño margarita. Yummy.
Had to check out the new Better Buzz coffee in Hillcrest. Such a nice place to take your laptop and get work done. Their acai bowls are pretty good, still prefer the one at Westbean in Bankers Hill.
Met up with a fellow Skinny Confidential mentee, Rachel aka Cold Brew Chick! Lauryn started mentoring her after the end of my mentorship and we’ve formed a little mentee club/friendship! She’s such a sweet girl, go check out her Instagram!!
Ok so Derek has the sweetest neighbour ever in life. I saw her that morning when I left and when I got back this is what was left outside our door. You never know how much a thoughtful gesture like this can impact a person. Such a class act!
Saved the best for last aka the hubs
Sunday we were trying to figure out what to do, and decided to head over for drinks & appys in Little Italy, but when I went to grab my ID, I couldn’t find it!! Seriously started freaking out esp given that I’m not anywhere close to home. Derek calmed me down and got me to retrace my week and then I realized I left it at Waterbar that day with Amrita. So we called them, sure enough they had it so we headed there instead and ended up staying for drinks.
All in all it was a crazy, busy, fun week! Have you guys nearly lost your ID? I’m sure there are some more entertaining stories than mine out there, haha
Hey hey guys, I’ve got a new video for my AIP followers! We are talking some of the most common myths about the AIP diet.
I get a TON of questions from you guys about the diet so I figured I’d answer them all in one spot aka this video! I go over some common misperceptions about the auto immune protocol and share my experience following the diet.
Here’s the video! Let me know if you have any requests for videos in the comments below
Making the right decisions when it comes to your career can come quiet easy for some people, for others not so much. It takes a lot of clarity and fearlessness to be able to listen to and follow your intuition. I’ve defnitely had moments like that in my life, in fact the first half of my life was basically that in a nut shell and it took a lot of time to get to that point where I could listen to my gut.
That’s why when I met Rebecca Pilozo I was so taken with her!
She embodied that fearless attitude and confidence I had worked so hard for and she was only 18! Since our days at Sephora she’s taken her passion for beauty and just ran with it, creating a life and a career of her dreams, and throughout all of the inevitable twists, turns and opportunities has relied on her intuition to lead her down the right path.
If you’re going through something similar, you’ll definitely want to listen to this episode. Check out Rebecca’s blog and follow her on Instagram!
We’re back in Cali baby! This week was pretty quiet until the weekend which was so much fun. Not only was it my fav time of year aka the Oscars, but Derek and I threw our very first dinner party ever! Who knew adulting could be so much fun haha.
Let’s take this back to ealier this week. Derek and I headed out for dinner at Barrio Star in Bankers Hill. We’ve been trying to be more veggie conscious so we ordered lettuce wrap tacos. So, so good and the decor in this place is super pretty!
So you guys know my brother and sister in law used to live in Cali, but other than that I don’t have much family here except for my cousin Shailly and her family which I’m so grateful for. Shailly grew up in Ludhiana, India and because we used to visit India a lot when I was growing up I got to know her and her sister Kitty pretty well. So whenever I visit San Diego, we always make sure to see each other. Usually Derek and I head up to her house which is beautiful and in a gated community up in the mountain but it was time to have them over so it kicked our butt into this home improvement frenzy.
We had been searching and searching for a dresser to hold all my makeup for EVER. We just couldn’t find anything that was perfect for the space plus the right feel. We were heading home from another unsuccessful search at Ikea when we magically found this dresser by the garbage outside. Talk about divine intervention. Not only was it the perfect size, but it was also in great condition.
So we brought it home, sanded it and primed and painted it and turned it into this!! I am loving furniture makeovers. So much fun, and ever since Jackie showed me how easy it could be by using spray paint, it’s just taken the whole intimidation factor out of it.
We even redid the knobs. With only spray paint!! How crazy is that?
So Shailly and fam came over for dinner on Saturday night. Derek was so excited to get to cook for them. He made cuban food which was so delicious. He’s so good to my family, I’m so lucky
Can you believe it was my first time trying cuban food? I know I’m Canadian and we love to travel to Cuba and all, but I have never ever been.
This takes us to Oscars Sunday. My cousin Monique and I started a new tradition last year, a WhatsApp Oscars drinking game. Genius right?
We had so much fun last year just the two of us that we decided to do it again this year with more girls. We just grabbed some rules online- like anytime Jimmy Kimmel mentioned Matt Damon you’d have to drink. Needless to say we were pretty happy by the end of the night, haha.
So ya this was definitely a fun week. Any time I’m in San Diego with Derek is a fun week!
Question- Did you make any Oscars predictions and if so did you get them right? What was your fav pic from this year?
