Transiting Mars Retrograde:
The Upside, the Downside & the Reality
While Mars is retrograde, its energy is turned inward, and just like any other transit, you make the most of it by working with the influence. In 2018, Mars stations retrograde on June 26 at at 9°13′ Aquarius and backpedals through through the zodiac until it stations direct at 28°37′ Capricorn on August 27.
So how do you make the most of it? By taking advantage of its upside, being aware of its downside and perhaps most of all, understanding the reality of it all.
This energy is best used introspectively. How so? For starters, Mars is an ego-driven planet, so while it’s retrograde, it’s a good time to re-examine your sense of self (ego). Does it need to be tamed or does it need to be heard?
Mars also rules ambition, initiation and assertion, so this can be a productive time for reassessing your goals and how you pursue them, as well your attitude towards taking leadership roles and promoting your own interests. Do you tend to run roughshod over others when pursuing your dreams, or do you miss opportunities because you hesitate act?
Since Mars rules anger, sexual desire and courage, this period favors reexamining how you express anger and physical intimacy. In terms of courage, it’s a good time to reconsider whether you could use a bit more nerve or if you need to reel it in.
Since Mars is the planet of action, the retrograde can put a damper on self-motivation so don’t be surprised if you find it harder to get things done. It’s also the planetary ruler of objects that are sharp, hot, inflammatory or dangerous, so extra care should be taken when handling such items.
It also rules physical energy, so it’s a good idea to check the strength of batteries in smoke alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, cameras, digital recorders and any other important device. On a similar note, Mars rules motors and engines, so if your car battery is on the way out, the retrograde may hasten its death.
Traditionally, when Mars (initiation, action, physical strength, sexual desire) is retrograde, it’s considered best NOT to:
• Launch a new business or other new venture
• Purchase a gym membership or start a new strength-building routine
• Begin a new sexual relationship
• Try a new barber or hairstylist
• Get a tattoo
• Start a construction or home improvement project
• Buy knives, scissors, firearms, power tools or products with motors or engines
• Undergo elective surgery
Why not? Well, according to astrological theory:
If you launch a new business or other new venture, you could end up with a false start on your hands.
When it comes to new barbers, hairstylists, tattoos and elective surgery, the hands of the person wielding the scalpel/scissors/needle aren’t that steady.
As for home improvement projects, power tools and sharp objects such as nails/spikes/saws are likely to be weak or defective, and hired contractors may fail to finish the job in a timely matter (or at all).
In terms of new gym memberships and workout routines, especially those involving strength training, odds are you’ll run out of steam and lose interest or if you don’t, the results will fall short of your expectations.
If you purchase new knives, scissors, firearms, power tools or products with motors or engines, they’re more likely to be defective while Mars is retrograde.
Sexual relationships that begin under Mars retrograde are likely to be disappointing or short-lived.
Life can’t always stop for retrogrades. Sometimes we just have to go forward, and sometimes we just don’t want to wait. Either way, this influence alone isn’t enough to doom anything. Delay it, yes. Doom it, no. If an epic fail does occur during this time, you can bet there are more astrological challenges to your chart besides Mars retrograde.
On the flip side, you may be under some wonderful transits or be impacted by one (or more) of the summer’s eclipses that could counteract, or at least mitigate, the retrograde energy.
And let’s not forget about karma. If a new lover enters your life during Mars retrograde, it may be new in this lifetime but spiritually speaking, this isn’t your first horizontal tango together. Whether you end up rekindling your love, settling an unresolved issue or even rejecting each other (again), this reunion is meant to serve a karmic purpose.
Last but not least, let’s not forget free will. In the final analysis, your free will – the decisions you make and actions you take (or don’t) – always play role in the outcome.
Retrograde transits are meant to make you uncomfortable. If they didn’t, you wouldn’t notice them and the gift they offer: A second chance to get something right.
After spending several weeks in Cancer’s cozy, quiet and sensitive world, it was time for Mercury to wring out his watery wings and bask in the warmth of the Sun.
From the moment Mercury crossed into the Lion’s den, he felt an urge to polish his wings, clear his throat and take center stage. In Leo, Mercury is confident, authoritative and enjoys the spotlight. As the planetary ruler of communications, Mercury in Leo can teach the rest of the zodiac a thing or two about showmanship; and whether he’s teaching, preaching, making idle conversation or speaking in front of millions, Mercury in Leo demands to be heard. What’s more, he expects everyone’s undivided attention.
As the fifth sign of the zodiac, Leo presides over creative self-expression, entertainment, gambling, sports, children, the performing arts and anything that ignites your passion. Consequently, while Mercury is here, he’s enthusiastic, playful, dramatic and direct. He speaks with authority and easily excels as a teacher, performer, politician or motivational speaker.
Of course, there are two sides to every sign, and Leo is no exception. Consequently, when Mercury in Leo is displaying the Lion’s lower nature, he can be insensitive, short-tempered, condescending and unwilling to listen, let alone consider, someone else’s opinion, needs or desires. At worst, when Mercury is draped in Leo’s imperial robes, he can be dogmatic, judgmental and dictatorial.
During this time, many of you may experience a burst of creativity, newfound enthusiasm or an increase in physical vitality. It’s also possible that some of you will seek the limelight, while others may feel compelled to speak your mind. For those of you who may have been reluctant to speak a much-needed truth to someone, this energy may be just what the cosmos ordered.
Transiting Mercury is in Leo from June 29 – September 5, 2018
(Mercury is retrograde in Leo from July 26 – August 19)
Uranus is the planetary ruler of technology, and as it makes its way through the luxury-loving sign of the Bull, many of us will be forced to choose what we value most: the ease provided by modern technologies or the security afforded by protecting our privacy.
Less than 10 days after Uranus entered Taurus, the sign that rules tangible goods, personal values and vocal cords, it was reported that one of Amazon’s Alexa devices recorded a private conversation and sent it to another user.
This report prompted many users to question whether their devices were spying on them.
Now, if Alexa or any other voice-activated digital assistant can respond to a voice command at any time, it’s only logical that it would be listening all the time.
Given that this technology is still pretty much in its infancy, it shouldn’t be surprising if something is misinterpreted or malfunctions in a negative way.
However, when it comes to iPhone’s Siri, Amazon’s Alexa and other voice-activated digital assistants, some researchers have already shown that they can be seriously manipulated.
This type of manipulation is also in its infancy.
The first electronic voice synthesizer (the Voder) made its debut in 1939 while Uranus was in Taurus. Consequently, we can expect to see significant advances in voice recognition technology, as well as other forms of artificial intelligence.
Besides ruling tangible goods, Taurus is the most productive sign in the zodiac so as Uranus awakens this sign, we can expect that such advancements will be widely used by businesses in their factories and warehouses. We can also expect to see such technologies incorporated into consumer goods that promise increased productivity and/or are marketed as must-have amenities to make one’s life easier.
Since Taurus is known for its appreciation of sensory pleasures, we can anticipate seeing technology packaged in new designs that make these products seem more like fashionable accessories and beautiful decor than electronic devices, as well as luxury lines that carry high price tags.
Although we prefer to focus on the positive traits, every zodiac sign has its failings, and when it comes to Taurus, the Bull can be lazy, self-indulgent and place way too much emphasis on comfort and material possessions.
As Uranus moves through Taurus, many of us may be enticed by technologies that offer a cushier lifestyle. If we’re not careful, the cost will far exceed the price tag.
Astrology, Eggs & What Was I Thinking?
A few nights ago, I decided to make some hard-boiled eggs, so I placed two eggs in a pot of water on the stovetop. After I turned on the flame, I checked the news on my phone, and an article about a celebrity caught my attention that made me think, “I’ve got to look at this horoscope.”
I had just turned on the gas, so I hurried into my office and pulled up the chart with the intention of taking a quick peek but quickly become engrossed in it.
A while later, I heard a loud “POP” followed by the immediate sound of something hitting the floor. It sounded like it came from the kitchen, but I had absolutely no idea what could have caused it.
I walked into the kitchen and there was my pup Valentino sniffing a piece of eggshell that was on the floor.
I totally forgot about the eggs on the stove.
After turning off the gas (and thanking God that I wasn’t cooking something that could have burst into flames), my immediate thought was:
“What was I thinking? How could I be so distracted that I forgot I had something cooking on the stove?”
The answer was also immediate: I have Mercury in Sagittarius.
While it may sound tongue in cheek, astrologically speaking the answer has merit because Mercury rules the mind, which includes one’s curiosity, attention span and memory.
Although Mercury is known for its intellect, curiosity and communication skills, it can be easily distracted and has a well-deserved reputation for being absent minded. When it’s in Sagittarius, a restless sign that rules expansion and higher knowledge, its curiosity is increased along with its tendency to be scatterbrained.
Fortunately, Mercury in Sagittarius gives me a sense of humor and the ability to laugh at myself, so I posted the photo on Instagram with the hashtag #mercuryinsagittarius.
In fairness, being born with Mercury in Sagittarius isn’t all that bad. Yes, it’s in it detriment and is considered to be a weak, and yes, it suffers from occasional bouts of verbal diarrhea, but it’s also an eternal student that has talent for teaching, writing, speaking and law.
Personally speaking, except for a few tortured eggs and a scorched pot that will never look the same no matter how hard I scrub it, Mercury in Sagittarius has been quite fortunate for me.
However, I’ll refrain from going on about them here because it would sound like I was bragging which, along with a tendency for interrupting, is one of the less flattering Mercury in Sagittarius traits.
May 16 – June 25 (D)
June 26 – Aug. 26 (Rx)
Aug. 27 – Nov. 15 (D)
When the planet of war is in the sign of humanitarians, free thinkers and good old fashioned protesters, he rallies to the cause and leads the charge. Normally, he would be in Aquarius for about six weeks, but this year he’ll be wearing the rebel’s clothes for almost five months.
Why so long? Because on May 12, Mars will begin to slow down, and on June 26 it will station retrograde at 9°13′ Aquarius. From that point on, Mars will backpedal through the zodiac until it stations direct at 28°37′ Capricorn on August 27. On September 10, Mars will re-enter Aquarius where it will remain until November 15.
Since Aquarius is an air sign, the Water Bearer leads with its head. With courage and passion to spare, Mars fights for what he believes is right, and the fixed nature of Aquarius adds fortitude to his personality. In short, he holds his ground until he wins, and if he doesn’t, he goes down fighting.
However, the influence of ruler Uranus means that Aquarius often thinks in extremes, and depending upon whether it’s expressing its higher or lower side, it can be a genius or a maniac. When you add in the courageous, impulsive and inflammatory nature of Mars, this particular planetary combination is capable of far-reaching achievements or extensive destruction.
On the collective level, expect to see headlines reflecting both extremes during the summer months with July being the month to watch. Why July? Because transiting Mars retrograde will make an exact conjunction to the lunar eclipse on July 27.
On a personal level, you can expect to get in touch with your inner rebel in connection to some area of your life.
How will the upcoming Mars retrograde cycle influence your horoscope? More on that in the weeks ahead!

The full moon on Saturday, March 31, 2018 takes place in Libra, which means the spotlight is on committed relationships. Not ones involving Mr. or Ms. Right Now (that’s Leo) or casual friends (that’s Aquarius) but your serious one-to-one relationships.
In other words, it’s shining its light on the ones that you’re deeply invested in such as your spouse or life partner, your best friends, your business partners and yes, even your competitors and adversaries.
Full moons usually bring something to light, and since the key phrase for Libra is “I Balance” many of you may have to deal with some type of inequality in a committed relationship.
While you may be the one initiating the conversation, it could just as easily be the other person. Should that be the case, the energy of this full moon suggests that it can get a bit heated because it’s part of a tense pattern known as a T-square that involves Mercury in Aries and a Mars/Saturn conjunction in Capricorn.
As a result, the normally accommodating and harmony-loving Libra moon is being challenged by planets in signs that are ambitious, competitive and controlling. In a nutshell, ones that love to get their own way.
Fortunately, Libra is an air sign which means that it operates from its head and excels at keeping its cool. Since it’s also the ruler of justice, diplomacy and conciliation, it knows a thing or two about fairness and is an expert getting everyone to the settlement table and keeping them there until an agreement is reached.
Consequently, the key to handling this energy is to keep calm while you both make your points, address the issues from a logical point of view and if possible, meet in the middle. Oh, and with Mercury retrograde, be sure that you’re both understanding what the other person is saying.
On that note, even if you reach an agreement, the retrograde influence suggests that the issue will resurface in the future and you’ll have to deal with it again.
Finally, should a relationship end under a full moon the break is usually permanent. However, it is possible that the influence of Mercury retrograde could put a question mark on that ending instead of a period.
After several weeks of talking about his feelings while immersed in Pisces’ emotional waters, it was time for Mercury to wring out his towel and return to dry land.
Well-rested from his time spent in the sign of slumber and eager to seize the day, Mercury crossed into the sign of the conquering hero.
Ruled by Mars, Aries is the warrior of the zodiac. Consequently, while here Mercury rarely takes anything at face value and is quick to challenge ideas, beliefs and laws. Likewise, during this time we may find ourselves involved in more than one emotionally charged debate.
Although his thought process becomes even faster and he is able to learn new subjects at lightning speed, while in Aries Mercury tends to lose patience with anyone who fails to keep pace with him.
He is also quick to anger and quick to answer, which means absent a few deep breaths, his tongue can sling barbs that inflict more than a little damage upon his target.
Did I mention that he rarely ever misses his target?
Consequently, while Mercury is in Aries we are also able to grasp new concepts easily and may be very motivated to study now. However, our patience with others is also likely to wear thin more easily, and words are apt to fly out of our mouth because we are prone to jump to conclusions knee jerk reactions.
As the first sign of the zodiac and the natural ruler of the first house, Aries’ focus is often on “me, myself and I,” and during this time, Mercury can be very self-centered. In turn, our thoughts may be so focused on ourselves that we completely forget to consider others.
However, Aries is also an extremely noble sign that seeks to defend and protect others, and when its higher side is expressed, Mercury can be a knight in shining armor.

No matter which sign of the zodiac claims you as its own, or what your chart is like for that matter, how you experience this Saturn cycle on a personal level depends largely on what you’ve been doing up until now.
For example, if your sign is highly favored by Saturn’s transit through Capricorn but you’ve done very little to further your goals, this transit won’t be handing out any big rewards. However, it will give you have the opportunity to make up for lost ground if you’re willing to work for it.
In contrast, if your sign isn’t one of the favored ones but you’ve been diligently working towards a goal, this transit can help propel you further by providing opportunities for growth (in the form of hard work) or by revealing the flaws in your plan (so you can correct them).
Saturn is about taking responsibility, and the truth is that no matter how wonderful or how burdensome any transit may be to your chart, it’s your own free will that decides what you make of it.
So now that you and Saturn understand each other, let’s take a peek at how each sign is likely to fare while the celestial taskmaster makes its way through Capricorn.
If you’re born under Taurus or Virgo, you can make great strides now. Your goals may be within reach, and/or a significant opportunity may present itself with little effort on your part. While others may view it as a lucky gift from the Universe, the truth is it’s the result of your past efforts. Don’t let feelings of satisfaction hold you back. This is a fortunate cycle that won’t be back anytime soon so be sure to make the most of it.
Who Gets Tested
If you’re born under Aries or Libra, expect a challenge that will test you in some way. If you’re on the wrong path, you’ll experience serious setbacks. If so, it may be time to pivot and/or cut your losses. However, if you’re on the right path, this challenge may serve as a catalyst that propels you to success.
Who Gets Put on the Spot
If you’re born under Cancer, you’re likely to feel restricted in at least one area of your life. This cycle is meant for reassessment, and it’s possible that you may need to release something or someone from your life. If so, cut your losses, assess the damage and start planning your comeback.
Who Skates by
If you’re born under Pisces or Scorpio, this period can be ripe with opportunities but you’ll need to seek them out and develop them. If you do nothing, you won’t suffer any ill effects during this transit, but since every Saturn cycle has a direct bearing on future ones, it’s best to give it your all.
Who Needs to Adjust
If you’re born under Gemini or Leo, you’re likely to experience a situation in some area of your life that makes you feel like you’re between a rock and a hard place. Is there a way out? Of course, but it’s going to require an adjustment that may feel a bit uncomfortable for you.
Who Gets a Free Pass
If you’re born under Sagittarius or Aquarius, you won’t be on Saturn’s radar. For Archers, it’s a welcome respite after being in Saturn’s sights the past few years, and for Water Bearers, it’s the last hurrah before Saturn turns its attention on you.
Who Gets a Second Chance
If you’re born under Capricorn, you’re wrapping up a cycle and depending on your past performance, this period will be a time of achievement or a time of disappointment.
Whatever is sound in your life will continue to go smoothy, but it will require considerable effort and persistence to achieve your goals. However, if you keep your eye on the prize and continue moving towards it, you’ll ultimately bring home the win.
In contrast, whatever isn’t sound will likely collapse. If you experience a personal and/or professional defeat, it’s critical that you understand what went wrong before you attempt to regroup. Otherwise, you’ll invest your time, energy and resources in yet another losing proposition.
Whether you rise or fall during this cycle, one thing is for certain: When this cycle ends, a new one begins and with new beginnings come second chances. If you experienced this period as a time of achievement, you get a second chance to prove your worth, and if you experienced it as a time of disappointment, you get a second chance to get it right.
