Grab your zils and get ready to drill! Ashley gives you some musical theory, four interesting zil compositions, and some fun dance combos to get you playing and dancing right away!

Ziltastic! : Musicality & Combinations

In this workshop you will learn four distinct mini zil compositions (each 2 counts of 8), and four mini dance combinations to fit each zil composition. We will review basic music theory which includes the 4/4 or "common time" time signature, basic note values, and counting rhythms based on those note values. These compositions will be a little different than your typical belly dance zil rhythms, so be prepared to learn something new, rhythmically, and expand yourself musically! At the end of the workshop we will combine all four dance and zil combos together to make a full 32-count dance-able and zil-able combo.

We are excited to share this brand new lecture from Amel Tafsout about some of the history, culture, and dances of North Africa!

The Maghreb: North African Culture, History, & Dance

In this lecture, Amel discusses the language, dance, history and culture of the Maghreb. The Maghreb is the region of North Africa that includes Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya. Since the 1989 formation of the Arab Maghreb Union, Mauritania and the disputed territory of Western Sahara (mostly controlled by Morocco) are also included in the Maghrebi region. In Maghrebi countries music and dance are associated partly with Middle Eastern culture (Arabic and Turkish) as well as Arab-Andalusian elements of Medieval Spain, and partly with Amazigh and African elements.
