Valid
I'm a bit late getting on the blog, sorry.

UCLA (the home team tonight) leads 3-1, with all the scoring via solo homers:
  • UCLA's first two batters of the evening, Bubba Nickles and Briana Perez slug back-to-back homers, giving the Bruins a 2-0 lead. It could have been a lot worse for Oklahoma, as UCLA loaded the bases on an infield single (actually, an error), double (by the suddenly power-hitting Brianna Tautalafua), and walk, but with two outs, the Sooners' Shay Knighten grabbed a hard grounder down the line -- which potentially could have driven in two runs -- and got the final out.
  • Sydney Romero homers for OU in the top of the third, to cut Sooners' deficit to 2-1 (she also led off the game with a double). UCLA SS snared a hard liner on the play before, otherwise Romero's blast could have been a two-run homer.
  • Aaliyah Jordan homers for UCLA in the bottom of the third to make it 3-1. Bruins also load the bases in the inning, but don't score further.
OU Top 4: Sooners with a one-out rally going. Fale Aviu single drives home runner from second to make it 3-2 UCLA. Passed ball advances tying run to second... Lynnsie Elam doubles in tying run (3-3). UCLA LF Kelli Godin leaps in air and nearly makes great catch, but ball hits heel of her mitt and bounces away... Ground single by Grace Lyons to left-center puts runners on the corners... Romero (halfway to the cycle) coming up... Lyons steals second in attempt to draw throw... Bruins walk Romero to load bases... Caleigh Clifton up... K for second out... Jocelyn Alo up... Grounds back to pitcher for third out... Tied 3-3...

UCLA Bottom 4: Jordan with two-out HBP... Rachel Garcia up... Walks. Pitches gets away, so Jordan advances to third...  K ends threat...

OU Top 5: Two-out walk... Wild pitch advances runner to second... Four-pitch walk puts runners on first and second... Flare to SS ends threat...

UCLA Bottom 5: Tautalafua belts one halfway up the LF bleachers, putting Bruins back up, 4-3. She started the postseason off 0-for-26, but hit a homer last night and has hit a double and homer tonight... Nothing further for UCLA...

OU Top 6: Uneventful...

UCLA Bottom 6: Jordan with two-out line-single up the middle... Brings up Garcia... Lines out to Romero at third to end inning...

OU Top 7: Sooners need a run to keep their season alive... Alo leads off... Puts a bit of a charge into one, but caught by CF Nickles... Green up next... 0-2 count... Drives one to warning track in left, caught by Godin... Down to "Big Play" Shea Knighten... The senior homers to tie game! 4-4... Can't help notice that all three Sooners this inning have hit deep fly balls (albeit two for outs)... Nicole Mendes grounds back to pitcher to end the half-inning.

UCLA Bottom 7: Can the Bruins answer Sooners' magic with some of their own? One run will win the WCWS... Taylor Pack packs a little heat with a sharp line single to left... Tautalafua up... Bunts runner to second (one out)... Colleen Sullivan up... Grounds to SS, Pack running on contact, thrown out at third... Sullivan to second on wild pitch... Kinsley Washington flares a single to left, Jacqui Prober (pinch runner for Sullivan) beats throw to plate. Ballgame! UCLA wins 5-4 to gather school's 12th national title... Last two UCLA titles bookend the 2010's (2010 and 2019)... Sooners' amazing senior class leaves with two titles (2016 and 2017)...

Oklahoma is the home team against UCLA in Game 1 of the championship round.

UCLA Top 1st: Aaliyah Jordan gives the Bruins a quick 1-0 lead with a two-out homer.

OU Bottom 1st: Nothing.

UCLA T2: Nothing.

OU B2: Shay Knighten goes yard to even things up, 1-1... As shown in this video, there's a yellow ribbon lining the top of the outfield fence all around, and the ribbon gets dislodged around where Knighten's ball landed. At first I thought the ball itself glanced off the ribbon and barely left the field. However, after looking over the replay a few times, it appears that the UCLA outfielder knocked off the ribbon and Knighten's ball went at least a few feet beyond the fence.
UCLA T3:

UCLA vs. Washington: Bruins need one win to advance to the championship series, whereas the Huskies must beat UCLA twice... Game 1 scoreless, as the Bruins bat in the bottom of the fourth... Top 5: Leadoff double for Huskies' Emma Helm... Nothing comes of it... Top 6: Back-to-back singles with one out give UW runners on first and second... K for second out... And another K to end the threat... Bruins go quietly in bottom of sixth... Top 7: One-out single for U-Dub... Followed by a walk... K (Rachel Garcia's 11th) for the second out... Pop to SS ends the threat... Bottom 7: Leadoff walk for UCLA...

It's "Survival Saturday," pitting one-loss teams, so that each of the four games will eliminate someone.

In the opening match-up, Washington and Minnesota are in a rain delay (with lightning in the area). When play resumes, the Huskies will come up in the top of the sixth with a 3-1 lead. As can be seen in this video, it's quite blustery in OKC... Via Twitter postings, here are videos of how all the runs have scored, in chronological order:

Huskies pitcher Gabbie Plain with eight strikeouts so far...

Friday night's winners' bracket doubleheader pits UCLA and Arizona in the first game, and local "Bedlam" favorites Oklahoma and Oklahoma State in the second.

Oklahoma strikes fast vs. Oklahoma State in the nightcap, a Jocelyn Alo single driving in two runs, with only one out... 2-0 Sooners... Grounder up the middle, bobbled by SS, leaves runners on the corners... Shay Knighten with a bloop/liner for a single up the middle, making it 3-0 for OU... Cowgirls finally get out of the inning... OSU bounces back for a run in the bottom of the first, driven in on a Michela Richbourg single... 3-1 OU... Been awhile since I last updated, due to many uneventful innings and a delay due to the lights on one of the towers going out. Sooners add three runs in the top of the sixth, making it 6-1 for OU... That's your final.

UCLA bats first as the visitor in the first game. The Bruins get a two-out line single to right in the top of the first. HBP gives UCLA two runners... K ends the half-inning... Leadoff HBP in Arizona half of the first... Two-out error on grounder to third gives Wildcats runners at first and second... Pop-up ends inning... Top 3: One-out single for UCLA... Followed by a walk... Bobbled grounder to short loads the bases, still with one out... Nice catch by Zona's Peanut Martinez on flare to right, but runner tags and scores from third. 1-0 UCLA... K ends the half-inning... Bottom 4: Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza hits one-out solo shot to right, tying the game 1-1... Two-out single keeps Wildcats' at-bats going... K ends the inning... Top 5: Two-out walk and single give Bruins some offensive life... Grounder to short ends the threat... Top 6: Malia Quarles with a pinch-hit long ball to give UCLA a 2-1 lead... Bottom 6: Leadoff double for U of A... Followed by HBP... Bunt advances runners to second and third, batter out a first... K for second out... Foul pop near third-base dugout ends threat... Top 7: After one-out single by Briana Perez, Aaliyah Jordan doubles her home (Jordan to third on throw home)... 3-1 Bruins... Walk to Rachel Garcia... Taylor Pack also walks, loading the bases for UCLA with one out... Shallow sac-fly to right, but pinch-runner Stevie Wisz manages to score from third. Looked like Wisz would get in a run-down between third and home, but Arizona catcher bobbles ball and Wisz sneaks her hand in at home. 4-1 UCLA... Colleen Sullivan's high fly to left (which would have ended the half-inning) dropped by Wildcat outfielder, allowing in two more runs. 6-1 Bruins... U U-of-A pitcher Alyssa Denham, who relieved starter Taylor McQuillin, records strike-out to end the Bruins' half of the inning... Wildcats coming up for their final chance in the bottom of the seventh... With two outs, Palomino-Cardoza hits her second homer of the game. 6-2 UCLA... Ground-out ends the game...

The 2019 Women's College World Series is underway, with Arizona getting a lead-off walk against Washington (which leads nowhere with Huskies pitcher Taran Alvelo fanning the next three batters)... I blogged earlier this season about the Wildcats' offensive prowess. Shortly after I posted that, Arizona was swept by Washington in Tucson. U-of-A has since gotten its groove back, taking two of three at UCLA to close the regular season and romping thus far through the NCAA tournament... Washington gets one runner on via HBP, but goes down scoreless in bottom of first... Wildcats waste a one-out double in the top of the fourth... After a long scoreless battle, the teams exchange solo homers in the sixth: Jessie Harper for Arizona in the top half, and Sami Reynolds for Washington in the bottom half... 1-1 score... Still in the bottom of the sixth, U-Dub with a runner on third (double and advancement on a ground-out) with two outs... Fly-out ends threat... Top 7: U-of-A gets leadoff runner on board via HBP... Runners on first and second with no out, as Huskies can't field Wildcat bunt... K for first out... Another K... Grounder to pitcher ends threat... Bottom 7: Huskies with first and second and one out, on two infield singles (the latter, beating out a sacrifice-bunt attempt)... Great catch in right-center by Alyssa Palomino-Cardoza likely prevents winning run from scoring... Ground ball to first sends game to extras... Top 8: Foul pop near 3B dropped. Will this come back to haunt Huskies? No, as strike-out ends long at-bat (lots of foul balls)... Third-baseperson redeems herself with nice catch on soft infield blooper... Two-out single to right for Wildcats... Two-run homer for Dejah Mulipola to straightaway center, 3-1 Cats... Ground-out ends top half... Bottom 8: Hard one-hopper to first for first out... Walk, bringing potential tying run to the plate in the person of Kaija Gibson... Soft pop to third for second out... Another pop to shallow center for final out... Arizona wins 3-1.

With all the other super-regional series having wrapped up Saturday, the only action is today's deciding game between SEC rivals Tennessee and Florida.

After a Florida run in the first inning, the game remains scoreless until the seventh... With the Vols down to their final three outs in the top of the seventh trailing 1-0, Haley Bearden homers to tie the game 1-1 (video)... Nothing doing for UF in the bottom of the seventh, so we're going to extras...

Nothing for Tennessee in the top of the eighth... Florida gets a one-out double from Amanda Lorenz... An intentional walk to Kendyl Lindaman brings up yesterday's Gator hitting star, Hannah Adams... Two quick strikes on Adams... Hard ground-out to first advances the runners to second and third... Rather than another intentional walk to create a force at every base, Tennessee will pitch to Jaimie Hoover... Hoover lines the ball into the defensive "vacuum" in left-center (video), giving Florida the win (2-1) and final spot in the Women's College World Series.

A very long day of softball is now over (past midnight in the Central and Eastern time zones). There will only be one game Sunday, as all the other super-regionals have been decided...

In Saturday's nightcap, Washington leads Kentucky 1-0, as the Wildcats come up in the bottom of the fifth... Noelle Hee's two-run shot in the top of the sixth gives the Huskies some cushion, 3-0... And U-Dub still not done in the inning, with runners on second and third and two out... UK escapes further damage... Bottom 7: Kentucky down to final three outs, as Washington leads 5-0... And that's how it ends... Huskies headed to WCWS.

Tennessee plates an early run vs. Florida... Still 1-0 Vols, as Gators bat in the top of the third... Bottom 4: Line single to left with two on by Tennessee's Madison Pacini gives Vols a 2-1 lead, with runners now at the corners and one out... K (taking) on 3-2 pitch for second out... Another K (swinging) minimizes the damage done by Tennessee... Top 5: Gators threatening with runners on first and second, with one out... Swinging strikeout on 3-2 pitch, a sinker that probably would have been Ball 4, for UF's second out... Hannah Adams rips single to center to tie game 2-2. Runners now at the corners... Steal of second... K keeps the game tied... Bottom 5: Vols put first two batters on first and second... Now two outs, with no advancement of the runners... K ends the threat with score still 2-2... Still tied, going to the top (Florida) half of the seventh... No score for Florida in top of seventh, Tennessee coming up... Leadoff hitter Aubrey Leach beats out chopper to third on extremely close call at first base... UF gets lead runner on infield grounder, but not double-play... Same thing again -- out at second on infield grounder, but not at first. Two outs now... Walk puts runners on first and second for Kaili Phillips... Strike-out... We haven't had too many extra-inning games in the tournament, but we'll have one here! Leadoff double for UF's Adams (who I've just learned is 4-for-4 today) in top of eighth... Dribbler to pitcher for first out, no runner advancement... Here's a weird play: One bobbled strike (which Gator batter thinks is third strike), batter runs to first and is thrown "out." Only problem is that there was only one strike at the time. Adams goes to third on throw to first. Tennessee argues Adams should be sent back to second, but umpires decline to do so. Batter walks, so runners on corners with one out... Jordan Matthews, who ESPN announcers say has a "clutch gene," pinch-hitting... Runner on first goes to second via defensive indifference... Matthews fouls one off on 1-2 pitch to stay alive... K to Matthews for second out... Alex Voss coming up... Tennessee pitcher snags hard Voss grounder, throws her out at first to end half-inning... A walk-off walk in the bottom of the ninth wins it for Tennessee, 3-2. We'll be back tomorrow for a decisive Game 3.

Mississippi and Arizona tied 1-1 after three... Wildcats pull away for 9-1 victory and trip to the WCWS.

UCLA with 4-0 lead on James Madison, with Dukes up in bottom of third... Final score is 7-2, as Bruins advance to WCWS.

Minnesota-LSU scoreless, as the Gophers come up in the top of the third... Still scoreless in the top of the fourth... Allie Arneson rockets a solo-shot to left to put Minnesota up 1-0, top five... LSU looking for equalizer in bottom of sixth, with runner on first and two out... Ground-out to third ends threat... Gophers now up 3-0 going to bottom of seventh... One out, runner on first for LSU, as tries to stay alive... Apparent Tiger single to right nullified by out-of-the-batter's-box call. Two out... Grounder to second ends it... Minnesota going to WCWS for first time ever...

Oklahoma with an early run to lead Northwestern 1-0... Sooners now up 2-0 in the top (OU) half of the third... OU now pulling away, up 5-0... And now 7-0... It's a final, 8-0... Oklahoma to WCWS.

Alabama leaves the bases loaded (all on walks) in the bottom of the first. Scoreless in Tuscaloosa... Bottom 2: Leadoff double for Bama's Maddie Morgan... Texas pitcher bobbles bunted ball, runners at corners with none out... With one out, Tide's K.B. Sides singles in game's first run, 1-0 Bama... Top 3: Two-out single ties game 1-1... Bottom 3: A leadoff double and two sacrifice flies give Alabama the lead again, 2-1... A dropped fly ball (which would have ended the inning), a walk, and a homer by Sides blows the game open, 5-1 Bama... Bailey Hemphill then makes it back-to-back long balls, increasing the Tide's lead to 6-1... With Alabama up 7-1, the Longhorns' Shannon Rhodes hits a one-out grand-slam homer in the top of the fifth, making it 7-5 (video)... The Crimson Tide adds an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to increase their lead to 8-5... Texas batting in the top of the seventh with one out and a runner on first... Two outs after a force at second... Hard single to left brings tying run to the plate for Texas in the person of M. K. Tedder... She flies out to shallow right on a 3-2 pitch, ending the game and the Longhorns' season... Alabama to WCWS.

Oklahoma State leads Florida State 2-1 in the bottom of the fifth, but Seminoles threatening with runners on first and second. Wild pitch by new pitcher advances the runners to second and third... K for second out... Infield line-out ends the threat... Top 6: Cowgirls add a run on HBP, steal of second base and advancement to third when catcher's throw goes into outfield, and sac-fly. Now 3-1 OSU... Nothing doing for FSU in bottom of sixth... OSU down quietly in top of seventh... Florida State, the defending national champion and this year's No. 1 team for the first month of the season, is down to its final three outs!... Anna Shelnutt leads off with solo homer to cut deficit to 3-2... K for first out (swing and miss on change-up)... Ground-out to third-baseperson for second out... Ground-out to second-baseperson. Ballgame. Oklahoma State to WCWS.

Six super-regional series begin today, with two having started yesterday. Check back for updates to the chart (below) and comments on the games.

Oklahoma has put a run on the board in the bottom of the first against Northwestern... The Sooners add a couple more for a 3-0 victory.

Minnesota has put up a four-spot in the bottom of the fourth to lead LSU 5-3... No further scoring, as the Gophers hold off a Tiger threat in the top of the seventh (runners on first and second) to take Game 1.

Florida leads Tennessee 2-0, bottom three... Gators add another run for a 3-0 victory.

Florida State, looking to stay alive, leads Oklahoma State 4-1 in the top (Seminole) half of the fifth... No further scoring, as FSU forces a decisive third game.

Arizona and Mississippi are tied 2-2, with the Wildcats batting in the bottom of the fourth... Arizona pulls away for 5-2 victory.

Texas rallied from an early 4-0 deficit to beat Alabama 7-5 and even up the teams' series... ESPN.com reports that Longhorn pitcher Miranda Elish is "doing well" after being hit in the face by a thrown ball in Game 2, but will not pitch in Game 3.

Yet another 3-0 score -- Washington over Kentucky.

Finally, UCLA routs James Madison 6-1.

Two of the eight super-regional series begin today: Texas at Alabama, and Oklahoma State at Florida State. The full schedule is available here. All games will be televised on ESPN, ESPN2, or ESPN-U. I will follow the outcomes in the following chart.

Teams
Game 1
Game 2
Game 3
Oklahoma (1) vs. Northwestern (16)

Alabama (8) vs. Texas (9)
Alabama
Florida (5) vs. Tennessee (12)

Florida State (4) vs. Oklahoma State (13)
Okla St.
Washington (3) vs. Kentucky (14)

Arizona (6) vs. Mississippi (11)

Minnesota (7) vs. LSU (10)

UCLA (2) vs. James Madison (unseeded)

Oklahoma State has taken the opener of its series at Florida State, 3-1 in nine innings. Michaela Richbourg's two-run homer (video) in the top of the ninth proves to be the difference.

Alabama leads Texas 3-0 in these teams' opener, with the Longhorns coming up in the top of the sixth... No further scoring, as the Crimson Tide takes Game 1...

***

Things went almost entirely to form last weekend, with 15 of the 16 national seeds advancing. The only exception was No. 15 Michigan, which lost to James Madison. However, another seven of the national seeds dropped a game in the regionals and were thus forced into a winner-take-all finale (listed below). Typically, the unseeded team the seeded team lost to was the same team the seeded team needed to beat in the winner-take-all match-up (an exception was Texas, which lost to a different team than it faced in the final).
  • Oklahoma (vs. Wisconsin)
  • UCLA (vs. Missouri)
  • Texas (lost to Sam Houston State, had to beat Houston twice)
  • LSU (vs. Texas Tech),
  • Ole Miss (vs. Louisiana-Lafayette)
  • Tennessee (vs. North Carolina)
  • Northwestern (vs. Louisville).
Check back for updates!
