One taught me love, one taught me patience, one taught me pain.
If you have ever experimented with putting on different wigs you know that these lyrics are definitely applicable. However, for Ariana Grande and the song these lyrics originate from, wigs seem to be a piece of cake… .
Perhaps the biggest media moments of 2018 were both the drop of Ariana Grande’s single “Thank U, Next” and the accompanying video. The song was released on November 3rd, 2018, and rose to #1 on music charts in record time. Highly anticipated, the video was released on November 30th, 2018 and received 100 million views in just two days! It’s no secret that Ariana Grande is the queen of pop, and now it seems she is also the queen of pop culture. You can even check out a parody of the song here.
Ariana Grande - thank u, next - YouTube
If you love fashion, the early 00’s, hair, and makeup as much as we do you probably loved this video. It follows Grande through four major female-led films from the early 00s: Mean Girls, Legally Blonde, 13 Going on 30, and Bring It On. Not only did it make us feel nostalgia for our childhood, it also called to our love of all things beauty. Grande took the classic fashion and style of the era and put a modern twist on them, using elaborate wigs, airbrushed makeup, and other classic Ariana-style pieces such as this iconic pink plastic jacket.
Because of our vested interest in hair, makeup, and beauty in general we couldn’t help but notice that Miss Grande wears approximately four wigs throughout the video, and that’s only her. The video featured probably closer to one wig per person, and honestly? Consider our wigs snatched!
Without further ado, here are all of the amazing wigs we saw in “Thank U, Next”.
Long, Sleek, & Blonde
Regina George could never. In the first film callback of the video we see Ariana sporting a long, sleek blonde wig as she portrays Regina George from Mean Girls. Not a color we typically see on Ariana in her everyday life, this shiny wig really transformed her into the high school drama queen from this 2004 classic.
High & Tight Pony
Ariana truly channeled her inner cheerleader with this slicked-back pony. More of a recognizable Ariana staple, this high pony was featured in all the callback scenes of Bring It On. We ask ourselves — how does she keep her extensions this smooth during the scene where she’s rolling around on a bed? Ariana we have to know, where do you get your wigs and extensions?
Short & Super Sweet
In another non-Ariana style she wears a short and simple brown wig for the 13 Going on 30 scenes. Since we know that Ariana’s natural hair is a soft, curly brown, we’re wondering if this one was in fact a wig. It’s definitely possible that her hair crew could have straightened and styled her hair for this scene, or she could be sporting yet another wig. The tell-tale signs of a wig are unnatural-looking parts, peekaboo natural hairs, or hair that looks stiff and immovable. What do you think?
High Ponytail, the Remix
The final amazing look we get to see on Ariana is her high-fashion, Barbie Doll look in reference to Legally Blonde. Perhaps the most difficult wig to wear, you can see that Ariana has put another twist on a classic “Ariana” look. The high ponytail for these scenes is accompanied by a long, ombre section of hair falling past her face, at one point with flowers tied into it. We have to ask: is this piece her natural hair or is it part of the wig? If it is part of the wig, is it a different wig from the one used in Bring It On scenes? We need answers!
Thank U, Next Wig Please
Some of the other wigs in the video can be seen on her costars: Liz Gillies as Cady Heron, an unnamed character played by Scott Nicholson (one of Grande’s backup dancers), and Gabi Demartino all in the Mean Girls portion of the video. While Demartino is actually wearing extensions, it’s clear that there’s no shortage of fake hair in this video.
Which of these wigs or extensions are your favorite? With what we know and teach at Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy, about hair and wigs in general, we’re extremely impressed with the quality of each used in the video. Wigs, whether they’re lace-front, monofilament, machine-weft, or hand tied, can be a difficult beast to master. They tend to have problems like falling off, showing natural hair, or using low-quality strands that fall out or burn when styled.
Ariana obviously has a team of professionals in charge of her hair and makeup, each of whom likely has extensive training in cosmetology or makeup artistry. Think you’re ready for a career in beauty? Maybe you could find yourself working behind the scenes in a famous artist’s music video one day!
Enrolling in beauty school can be an exciting and intimidating process for many people. Cosmetology, barbering, and esthetics programs are full of new experiences, new friends, and new opportunities, so making sure you’re making the right choice and have all the support you need is critical. One of the most important sources of support for our students comes from Kimberly Gutierrez, the Admissions Advisor here at Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy. She is a major help to all of the incoming students at the school and tries to make sure they’re set up for success. We recently had the chance to talk to Kimberly and hear her story, so hopefully she can inspire you as much as she inspires us and our students!
Kimberly had an interest in learning cosmetology like many of the other bright, passionate people that walk through our doors. She took a tour of Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy and was interested in applying, but she was worried about the financial details and was unsure of the financial aid application process. The entire thing was so intimidating that she didn’t even want to tell her parents about it. Because her uncertainty, Kimberly decided not to enroll in beauty school, but had fallen in love with Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy all the same.
After her experience touring the school, Kimberly went to work at Macy’s corporate office. She spent most of her time on the phone with people, which turned out to be an important skill when she moved eventually joined the Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy team. She worked hard at Macy’s, but eventually felt like her opportunities were too limited. When the opening at Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy became available in admissions, Kimberly made the jump! She has since proven to be an outstanding member of the team, and has been relatable to many incoming students because of her own experience touring our campus.
Kimberly’s Role at Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy
Kimberly has been working as the admissions advisor at Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy for a few months now. Her day-to-day routine begins with calling new leads over the phone. She introduces herself and asks the person if they have specific questions about the programs at the school. She starts by answering those questions and then offers more information from there. She will invite them to take a tour of the school within in a day or two so the prospective student can visit us with questions fresh in their mind.
After wrapping up her morning calls, Kimberly conducts tours of the school. This is a great chance for her to get to know the students and help them feel at home. First impressions are extremely important! This is also Kimberly’s first opportunity to introduce students to the financial aid* process and the options they have. She lets the financial aid department review the paperwork and make sure everything is ready to go.
The tour ends with setting up another follow-up appointment for the student to finalize their paperwork. Kimberly works together with the financial aid department to make sure all the documentation is as simple as possible, and they help the student through the enrollment process.
Making a Difference for Students
Many students are nervous because they don’t know what to expect. Some students come with a little experience, while other students have none at all. Students all learn together, so Kimberly tries to help students of all levels feel comfortable and confident. She most enjoys seeing students go through that transition and become bright, excited beauty professionals. Kimberly’s advice for future students rings back to her own experience enrolling in beauty school:
”Many students are stopping because they’re anxious about money, but nothing is impossible. There’s always a way to pay for beauty school, it’s just a matter of starting. If you don’t start you won’t know what the end result will be.”
Kimberly’s advice is excellent because where there’s a will, there’s a way! She works closely with financial aid to help students make their dreams happen, and yours could be next!

If you’ve seen the movie or read the book, Crazy Rich Asians, you know the Youngs always look like a million bucks! But keep your wallet tucked away. You don’t have to sacrifice your savings to look the part. Here’s how!
Based on a Book
Cover yourself just like the book! Take your daily routine one step further with a warmed, watermelon blush and a raspberry lip, just like the picture. The woman on the cover has got you covered! You glow, girl.
Ever heard Jaclyn Hill talk about SBN: Smoky But Natural? We sure saw a lot of this look among the women in the Nick’s family. Take your favorite nude mid-tone brown and pack it onto your lower lashline and across the outer two thirds of your lid. Blend outward and finish it off with a light, thin wing. What a natural beauty.
Think you can’t tackle a night-out look? Oh GLOW UP. When and doubt, smoke it out. Take a dark gray or rich warm brown and shade in the outer lid. Highlight your inner corners with a champagne-y silver, smudge a touch of black shadow along the lash line and bam. Consider yourself glam. Talk about eye candy or even (Nick’s) arm candy!
Teal’s the Deal
Remember that GORGEOUS ring?? (More like rock). Well ROCK that look and sparkle the same by putting a matching shade of shadow on those lids, or “wing it” with electric liner. For fair ladies, try an icy aqua. For mid-toned women, try a vibrant turquoise. Deep ladies: work a rich teal. Or mix and match. You can make the perfect shade as customized as the heirloom itself! Your eyes will POP like fireworks on Chinese New Year.
Wearing one of the looks above? Now complete your full face with full brows! Use the corners of your eyes as a guideline for how long your brow should be and mark lightly. Take a pencil and with medium pressure apply a clean line along the bottom of your brows. Blend upward with a spooly, pluck out those flyaways, and you’re done! If you’d like a crisper look, apply a small amount of concealer with a flat brush just beneath your brow. Talk about clean!
Let’s Be Blunt
These crazy rich asians are blunt, in personality AND style! Modernize a sassy, blunt cut with long layers around the face, a side part, and even highlights for dimension. Bold AND sweet!
Hold Your Curls!
No, literally. If you’re having trouble getting your hair to keep a curl like Rachel can in humidity, coil it up fresh off the wand and let it cool in your hand next to your head. Drop it and watch that strand boing! Consider your locks locked. You could even try pinning the curls to your scalp and letting them cool anywhere from 10 minutes to even overnight. And heeelllllooooooo Rachel!
Need other curl-holding tips? Try second-day hair, volumizer/dry shampoo for body and texture, and of course, lightweight hairspray. (You don’t want to weigh down your masterpiece.)
Blonde: Not Dumb, Platinum!
Like Awkwafina, yes you can. (And should!) Any girl can pull off blonde so long as it is the right shade. Identify your skin tone and go for a mane to match! If your undertones are peach or red, try a golden honey blonde. If you are olive toned, try natural beach blonde. If your undertones are blue or pink, try icy or ashy blondes.
Dreading the Maintenance?
Ask your stylist about a root tap or a root smudge! Problem solved.
Not to be confused with overalls… who can even compete with Nick’s family? You. That’s who. Volumize that hair, flash a chunky necklace, and channel your inner Kate Middleton. Try solid patterns, blazers, form-fitting dresses, and sophisticated Ann Taylor-esque statement pieces. Here are some more tips on how to look tailored and fabulous on a budget!
You don’t have to be crazy or rich to pull off Hollywood-worthy looks. Check out our blog and Instagram for more DIY beauty looks!
Cosmetologists and estheticians are commonly confused with one another. You should be aware that they are in fact two different professions and two different licenses in the state of California. However, there are some quirks about them.
A cosmetologist learns hair, makeup, skin care, nail care, and more. They often cover just the basics of everything but hair. Hair is their speciality! You can work as an esthetician as a cosmetologist, but most of the time it’s at a very basic level. Basic facials, certain types of waxes, and basic makeup application are all things they can provide to their clientele.
An esthetician dives deeper. Skin analysis, more complex skin care treatments, and more in-depth makeup artistry is often offered to estheticians in an esthetics program. With an esthetics license you are not legally allowed to practice cosmetology.
So that begs the question. What does an esthetician do?
This is the first thing that comes to mind when talking esthetics. Relaxing facials, facials that treat acne, and even facials that treat signs of aging are all types of services that an esthetician can learn and offer. In addition to facials, they can also provide skin exfoliation.
The next time you step into the spa and are looking for a relaxing treatment, know that it is likely being performed by a licensed esthetician!
Estheticians are trained in providing skin treatments for the whole body! Body treatments are usually focused on the back and shoulders. Back facials are highly popular and are created for relaxation purposes or to treat skin conditions like body acne.
Another popular body treatment is known as a wrap. A body wrap is at treatment that goes on your back and then is left there to set in while a wrap is circled around it to lock in heat and make its effects more immediate and last longer.
Makeup artistry is something many estheticians love doing! Think about it, to create beautiful makeup art, you’ll want a healthy canvas to work with! That’s where skin care and makeup go hand in hand. Makeup application isn’t just limited to eyeshadows and lipsticks. You can learn specific types of makeup for all occasions! Bridal styles, runway looks, and even special effects makeup are covered.
Hair removal is a service that is in demand in So.Cal. Smooth legs are so in right now, and you can learn how to provide them! Waxing, tweezing, and hair removal in general are all taught in an esthetics program. With the recent rise in speciality service shops like waxing bars and brow bars, knowing how to wax has never had better job prospects!
In addition to providing services, an esthetician must be able to consult and advise their clients. Helping them build a skin care routine that is tailored to their skin and goals is a part of the job that goes home with the client! Makeup suggestions and product recommendations are two other things an esthetician can help their guests with.
What Do You Do?
What do you do at your job? Is it as fun as providing these types of services to people all day long? If you have a passion for skin care and are looking for a reason to pursue esthetics school, let this be your reason! Contact Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy today to learn more about our program!

You are on your way!
No matter how determined or ready you are, sometimes things just get in the way. It could be something big like time commitments or a family emergency. Or it could be something as simple as losing focus during the summer months.
Don’t let these become roadblocks to your future!
Here are five simple tips that can help you re-group, re-focus, and keep your sights on your dreams!
Set Time Aside for You
Taking care of yourself is important and no time is more important to give yourself a focus than when you are struggling with something. This may seem counterintuitive, we are often taught to just keep “plowing through” or “fake it until you make it” and while those values have some merit, doing something for yourself can ultimately have a much greater benefit.
Find something you love and set a goal to do it a few times a week. You can even set a calendar event or reminder on your phone to help you remember. There may be times that you may not want to, but taking these moments can really help to refuel you and recenter your focus.
Keep a Calendar
Life gets busy. Just juggling school and life can be hectic. You add a family or a full-time job to that and you may suddenly find yourself struggling to keep everything straight. Create a calendar and share it with those closest to you so that you can keep track of events, commitments and more.
Website and apps like google.calendar and calendly can be a great resource to help you keep everything moving, and everyone around you informed as to what is going on.
Set Sliding Goals
It’s important to have goals. But sometimes saying “I am going to become a popular cosmetologist” can feel a little overwhelming. Set smaller goals that can help feed into your larger plans. This can help you take the smaller steps you need to create the future you want for yourself.
Don’t Forget to Reward Yourself
One of the greatest things about setting sliding goals is that you increase your “wins.” One of the biggest things that can lead to burnout is not feeling like you are making an impact on your goals. Give yourself permission to celebrate every success, and learn from every failure.
Find things that you love, but haven’t done or don’t do often, to reward yourself with, win or lose, and take the time to celebrate. You deserve it.
Share Your Accolades
It’s one thing to celebrate yourself, but give your support team the chance to celebrate you as well. Don’t be scared to share your accomplishments, no matter how small, and let your support team party with you!
Even if things aren’t going perfectly, do not be scared to share! Sometimes you need more than just cheers, you need support, and never forget that your friends and family are there for you.
Get Going On Your Goals!
It’s time to dig in deep and turn your dreams into reality.
With a little bit of hard work, anything is possible! At Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy we are ready to help you build the skills to let your dreams take flight.

Prom is over unfortunately, but it was so much fun preparing for it, right? Finding the perfect dress, watching countless makeup tutorials, and practicing styling your hair. However, all that planning and prepping you did doesn’t have to go to waste! In fact, there are a bunch of different ways you can turn your amazing prom looks into everyday wear. You don’t have to lose that planning-for-prom high, just check out some of our ideas here!
How to Wear a Prom Dress Every Day of the Year
Okay maybe every day of the year is pushing it a little, but there are certainly a lot of dresses out there that you can tweak slightly or buy a variation of that would allow you wear at least one a week! No one wants to wear a ballgown every day so try one or two of these simpler variations below mixed and matched with your regular casual wear!
If you wore a shorter dress to prom, our favorite hack is to pair it with a denim jacket or colorful blazer. It takes a fancy dress down a few notches and allows you to wear it with sneakers and a backpack!
Was your gown a two-piece? Pair that top with some jeans, a skirt, or some flowy high-waisted pants!
If your dress wasn’t really everyday wear, you can still find regular dresses that make you feel like you’re at prom anyway! Try something like these with some layered jewelry and one of those pretty updos you found on Pinterest.
It’s 2018, guys. That means that not everyone wore a dress to prom. Our final prom dress hack isn’t even a dress hack, but rather a suit hack! If you were looking dapper in a clean cut tux or a crisp suit, we suggest swapping that jacket out for something a little more casual. Try pairing your dressy pants, shoes, and button up with a leather or denim jacket. Keep it dark to really keep those prom vibes going!
Prom Hair, but Make it Casual
Now that you’ve got a killer outfit for any day of the week, let’s move on to those lovely hairdos we love so much, shall we?
Let’s start with the extremely popular trend of doing intricate braids for all occasions. Did you do something lovely like this for your prom?
A simple way to make this a touch more casual is to remove any crowns, flowers, or decorated pins you had in your original prom look, and take down half the hair. It should look something like this.
This is a great casual look that doesn’t take much time to accomplish! Another way you can play with the braided prom look is to move those braids to the front like this.
Did you go a different route? What about the classic ballerina bun? We get it. There’s that whole princess feeling that comes with a ballerina bun. You can make it a little more casual though, just take this…
…and turn it into this.
You can achieve this look by beginning upside down. That’s right, flip your hair upside down and begin your french braid at the nape of your neck. When you hit the top of your head simply wrap your extra hair into a bun and ouila! Keep it messy to maintain your casual status.
Another classically beautiful prom look is long hair down your back in neat waves.
A simple way to style your hair like this but make it a little more dressed down is to mess up those curls! To achieve the below look curl your hair just like you did for prom, then add in a texturizing spray or mouse and a few braids. Perfectly messy, but still a little classy.
Short Hair, Don’t Care
We get that not everyone has lovely flowing Rapunzel hair, which is why we even have some casual short hair looks that will still make you feel like you could walk into a prom at any moment!
First, if you went to prom with your hair looking like this…
You can still keep that far side part, but tone the curls down to a messy wave like this.
Now that you’ve got delightful hairstyles for your everyday, it’s time to talk makeup.
Bright Makeup Isn’t Just for Prom
Who doesn’t love those inspirational makeup tutorials where the artist always comes out looking flawless and amazing? Well, as difficult as it can be to achieve those lofty looks, you can still do a subtler version in your everyday life. Here are a few of our favorite looks that you might have worn for prom, only toned down.
Let’s take a page out of Nikkie Tutorials’ book and try toning down this admittedly intense blue smokey eye.
A post shared by Demi Lovato (@ddlovato) on Nov 12, 2017 at 6:49am PST
To tone this down, try this instead! By swapping out that bright purple for a slightly shinier one, it becomes less dramatic, though still lovely. Stay closer to your natural lid shape as well to tone it down.
Red lips are a classic, right? Here’s one interesting alternative that doesn’t quite shout “prom” as much as bright red.
Tangerine lips, who knew?
Finally, here’s one incredibly intense makeup look that could really only be worn to either prom or maybe a fashion show. We love it though. How will we tone this down for an everyday look?
BOOM! Simply remove most of that color and in place of the glitter, apply a little shimmer. Keep it interesting with a half-filled in wing.
If you’re feeling confident, you can even wear the original look. Who says you can’t wear mermaid makeup every day?
Practice Prom Looks Professionally
Prom 2018 sure was a lovely show of beautiful dresses, hair, and makeup. We certainly loved all the practicing and planning that went into it, though we’re sad that it only lasted for one night.
If you have found that you have a passion for all things prom-inspired, it might be time to begin practicing it professionally. At Colleen O’Hara’s Beauty Academy we train future beauty professionals to do just that! Our students can prepare to enter the beauty field and practice their passion for all things cosmetology in as little as 16 months. Do you think you have what it takes to bring your prom look to the rest of the world? We’d love to hear from you. Call us today at 833-841-4200, or you can fill out this form for more information.
