Decorating an Everett apartment isn’t difficult, but it can seem overwhelming if you’ve never lived on your own before or you’ve always had a roommate and someone else with furniture. For your first apartment where you live alone or live with another person for the first time, furnishing the space with all the “right” stuff can take a little time, and it’s a little too easy to overspend on items and end up with an apartment full of things you don’t really need.

The key ingredient in decorating and furnishing your Everett apartment is time, and you can avoid spending too much and getting the wrong items by securing all the necessary pieces first (like the bed and a microwave, for example) and then taking your time to find the rest of the items. Here’s a list of some of the items you may wish to find first, so your apartment is immediately usable and relaxing.

Buy a Bed for Your Everett Apartment

If you choose a studio, you may wish to get a bed that also turns into a couch, but it’s entirely up to you as to the sort of bed that will look best and feel best in your new space. Don’t go out and buy a kitchen table or a couch before you have a bed. You have to sleep every night whereas you don’t necessarily have to use the couch or sit down at a table to eat every day.

Pieces of furniture that aren’t really necessary at the start – and which you might not even need for quite some time – include a dining table and chairs, bookcases or shelves for the wall, and anything decorative. While it might look nice to see your walls filled with decorative pictures, covering your walls definitely isn’t as important as ensuring you have a comfortable place to sleep.

Tip: If you want to spread things out a bit with your purchases, you can always buy a mattress one month and wait to get the bed frame the next. However, sometimes you can get a free bed frame when you buy a mattress, so look for deals that will help you secure more than once piece of furniture at a time. You might even score a free bedside table or something similar.

Cleaning Supplies for Your Everett Apartment

A bed and a few other sticks of furniture aren’t the only pieces you need. The Unpakt shares a quick list of cleaning supplies that can help you keep your apartment clean. It’s always a good idea to get in the habit of cleaning your apartment regularly, even if you’ve just moved into the space and haven’t really furnished it with many items.

Some of the items on the list include a vacuum cleaner, broom and dustpan, and a garbage can (don’t forget the garbage bags, too!). Other items that can help you keep your apartment organized and clean include a laundry basket, various cleaning solutions (like all-in-one cleaners and glass cleaners), sponges for the kitchen, and laundry detergent for washing your clothes.

If you’re not inclined to get everything on the “should have” list for cleaning supplies, make your priority the broom and dustpan. Moving into your apartment will probably get everything a little dusty, and you’ll want to sweep immediately after getting everything inside the apartment.

Can you afford to move to a new Washington apartment? Is your desired community within reach financially? These are questions you must answer before you begin your apartment search. During your research, you may find that you can afford to live in a particular town that’s close to where you work, or you may figure out that another town is well out of your price range and isn’t even worth spending time on for your apartment hunt.

If you’re thinking about moving to Everett, here are the numbers that will help you determine whether to begin your apartment search in the town that sits north of Seattle and across the water from Whidbey Island.

Starting Prices for Houses and Apartments in Everett

One of the decisions that may impact your search is the availability of houses for rent and whether living in a single-family home might offer you a better experience. A quick look at real estate repository Zillow reveals that there are studio-size, townhouse size, and small house size residences available for around $1,100 to $1,500 a month.

However, for anything larger – something around two or three bedrooms – the price for renting a single-family home tends to start around $1,600 and increases to several thousand dollars, depending on the size and exact location of the home. If you’re looking for a residence that will accommodate a large dog, you might need to consider a house.

On the other hand, if you own a small dog or a cat, you may be able to consider an apartment home in Everett. Rent Cafe reveals that the average rent for a studio is $1,121, but a one-bedroom will only cost you around $75 more, on average, at $1,196. Moving up to a two-bedroom apartment in Everett will cost around $1,421, on average.

Rent Cafe shares further that the majority of apartments in Everett – 70% of available units – cost $1,000 to $1,500 a month. Only a very small percentage of apartments cost more than $2,000, and a similarly small number of apartments cost less than $1,000. Overall, the rent in Everett is more affordable than Seattle, where the average for all rentals is $1,819.

Apartment Rental Costs for Neighborhoods Around Everett

Like any community, Everett features a variety of rental prices for various neighborhoods. The neighborhoods of Kingsridge, Puget Park, Lowell, and Silver Lake require the most rent from residents. The least expensive apartments are usually found in Holly, Bayside, and Delta. The average rent in Bayside for all rentals sits at $1,299d, and the average rent for all rentals in Lowell is approximately $1,387.

If you determine that the overall price of rentals in Everett is affordable on your budget for your desired apartment size, you can refine your search even further by investigating the costs of individual neighborhoods within Everett. You might find that you can afford a two-bedroom apartment in a less expensive neighborhood while you can only afford a studio in one of the more expensive areas.

As the population and demand for housing in Seattle has increased over the past decade, outlying communities and suburbs have become popular destinations for families, couples, and individuals seeking affordable housing. Apartment living has always offered an ideal balance of amenities and convenience, but renting has also become a more affordable option for thousands of families in the Seattle region.

If you’re seeking a new home in Seattle, you may find it beneficial to understand the current housing prices in Seattle, as well as those in suburbs and nearby towns like Everett.

Housing Statistics in Everett, Washington & the Surrounding Communities

The U.S. Census Bureau and the U.S> Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) regularly release statistics on the nationwide housing market, as well as statistics for major metropolitan areas. In their September 2017 report, the agencies counted 1,300,00 building permits, 1,180,000 housing starts, and 1,075,000 housing completions.

These numbers represent an overall, increasing trend for the past several years. In 2012, which was only a short time into the economic recovery, the nation was only seeing around 600,000 houses completed and slightly more housing starts. For statistics in the West, the government counted 199,000 single-family permits requested and 362,000 permits overall for the region.

Meanwhile, the Seattle Department of Construction & Inspections counted a total of 880 permits for the Seattle area totaling $437,591,706 worth of work. Although the total might appear impressive, the number of people interested in finding housing in Seattle has remained far above the number of available housing units under construction, on the market, and recently completed.

Housing and Apartment Costs in Everett, Washington

One of the reasons families choose Everett for their new home is because of the savings on rent gained by living north of the metropolitan area. According to Rent Jungle, the average price of a one-bedroom apartment in Everett was $1,228, and the average price of a two-bedroom apartment was $1,417. Overall, the average price of an apartment was $1,374 in Everett.

These prices represent an upward trend in rental costs that have been slowly increasing since 2011. Although prices for rent did fall somewhat in the middle of 2011, it wasn’t long before average prices began climbing again in 2012. Since that time, rental costs have been climbing, but they haven’t been on the same meteoric rise as the rental prices seen in downtown Seattle.

Within the city of Seattle, apartment prices have risen far beyond those seen in Everett. On average, prices for apartments in Seattle have hovered around $2,195 while the average for a 2-bedroom apartment in Seattle has reached $2,763. Due to these rising rental rates, many families have chosen locales like Everett and other towns outside of Seattle for greater affordability in cost-of-living expenditures.

Each night when you come home from work, you wander into the kitchen and wonder what you’ll prepare for the family. Or, perhaps you come home from school and just want to sit around without having to spend time preparing something for the evening meal.

However you spend your days, none of us wants to spend more time than is necessary searching for ingredients and cookware after a busy day. Whether cooking is your passion or it’s something you don’t enjoy at all, a clean and organized kitchen can help you enjoy each day with friends, family, and your Everett apartment kitchen.

Learn Some Cooking Shortcuts Around Your Everett Apartment

Doing things the way they’ve “always been done” isn’t always the best way to complete tasks in the kitchen, particularly when there are millions of hours of videos on YouTube and other video platforms that describe how to cook neatly and efficiently. Spending some time refining your cooking techniques can save you loads of time in the kitchen each evening.

From placing utensils in convenient places to preparing ingredients in a particular order, there are many changes you can make to increase your productivity in the kitchen. Imagine shaving ten minutes off your cooking routine each day. That’s more than an hour each week that you’ll save.

Donate, Recycle, & Give Away Old Kitchen Items

Virtually everyone has an inexpensive set of utensils they bought for college or for their first apartment, and many people keep those utensils for decades “just in case” they might see use. Although having extra sets of utensils, pots, pans, and other kitchen implements might sound smart, having all those extra items in your kitchen may actually make it more difficult in the kitchen.

It’s important to not underestimate the extra time you might have to spend in your kitchen when you’re crowded by extra appliances, excess utensils, and pots you never use. Do you really need to keep that old aluminum pan you bought a decade ago when you didn’t have any other pots and pans? Let someone else use it, recycle it, or sell it to help create a spacious and uncluttered space in which to cook.

Trade the Cooking Duties a Few Times Each Week

If one person handles all the cooking responsibilities at home, it’s important to consider the time and effort put into that daily chore. There are many ways to divide the responsibilities between family members, even if it’s one person who does the majority of the cooking. Here are some of the ways you can divide the mealtime duties in your apartment kitchen:

  1. Have one person cover the cooking and the other clean the dishes after the meal.
  2. Cook meals on alternating nights with one or two nights reserved for eating out.
  3. Plan your cooking early in the week to avoid wasting time each night.

Living in an apartment is an ideal way to enjoy the convenience of amenities, a good location, and an on-site maintenance crew, but it can also become quite easy to spend extra money each month on impulse buys and redundant services. For the average apartment dweller, eating out and shopping can become routine, and it’s beneficial to examine monthly spending once or twice a year.

Taking a close look at monthly spending can reveal services that are redundant, as well as spending practices that could be changed to help save money. Here are a few simple techniques you can use to adopt a frugal lifestyle at your Everett, WA apartment.

Don’t Base Your Apartment Choice Solely on Rent

If you’re moving to Everett or will soon be searching for an apartment in Washington, comparing a variety of costs can help you adopt a more frugal lifestyle than if you were to simply consider the cost of rent at each location. For example, a shorter commute might come with a higher cost for rent, but a longer commute and the gas you might spend getting to work could eat away at any savings you might see at the less expensive location.

Here are a few areas to compare when selecting a future apartment:

  • Commute – Compare the cost of each commute and factor those costs into the total rent.
  • Amenities – Look at a community that has an on-site gym versus one that doesn’t.
  • Facilities – Compare the convenience and cost of laundry facilities versus no facilities.

Other factors to consider include the type of commute you might be able to enjoy. If you live close to work, can you commute by bicycle? If so, you might have the opportunity to sell your car and enjoy the frugality of riding a bicycle without the hassles of gasoline, vehicle insurance, and car maintenance.

Examine Your Bills for Cost Increases and Redundancies

You might love watching television each night and catching up on your favorite shows, but how much are you paying for that luxury, and how many bills are you paying each month for entertainment? Your bill for cable television or satellite television has probably crept up over time, but it’s not always easy to recognize those increases since they happen so slowly.

Tip: Call your service providers and ask for promotions or reductions in price. Most cable television and satellite television providers will bargain with you or offer special deals if you call and express concern that your bill has become too expensive.

Look at Your Spending on Eating Out & Groceries

Eating out is a national pastime in the United States, but it can become incredibly expensive to pay for delivery, eating out, and fully prepared food each month. Try to keep a log of all the money you spend on food each month. If the overall amount of money you spend looks too high, try shifting some of your spending from restaurants to the grocery store.

You don’t have to become a dedicated chef in your Everett apartment, but preparing a few more meals each month in your home can help you save money as well as improve your health as you learn to cook non-processed and healthy food.

With its longer days and warm temperatures, the summer represents a time when days spent relaxing by the pool or spent hiking tend to happen frequently. If you’re a new resident of Everett or you’re interested in becoming a part of the community at Colby Creek, here are a few suggestions on how you can enjoy the summer at your new apartment, as well as around the town of Everett.

Summertime Relaxation at Your Everett Apartment

The long daylight of summer often encourages us to spend more time outside, and the community amenities at Colby Creek definitely help you make the most of each summer day. Some of the activities available outside include taking a dip in the swimming pool, playing with friends on the basketball court, or spending some time in the racquetball court.

When the weather isn’t cooperative, you’ll have access to indoor activities at the elegant clubhouse, the convenient cardio fitness center, and the indoor swimming pool. Whether the weather is soggy or beautiful, you’ll have access to a pool at Colby Creek.

Enjoying the Natural World Around Everett This Summer

Everett is known for its convenient location for commuters, but it’s also a great place to live if you enjoy strolling through parks or visiting nature areas. Legion Park is worth a visit with its view of the bay, and it’s also a great place to visit if you have kids and want to have a weekend picnic near the water.

Another park you may want to visit is Howarth Park, which tends to get a little muddy in the winter but offers a much more pleasant experience in the summer. Many people come to the park to watch the sunset, and the ample beach access makes twilight beach walks a weekly event.

If you’re willing to drive about a short distance for your outdoor entertainment, you might want to consider a visit to Spencer Island Park, which is a simple yet beautiful place to hike and walk. If you’d like to enjoy a quiet park with opportunities for bird watching and scenic walks, Spencer Island Park is an excellent destination to consider.

The Evergreen Arboretum & Gardens offer yet another nearby venue for a nature walk, and it’s a great place to visit if you only have a short time to relax but want to get out and travel somewhere outside of your apartment. You can enjoy a quiet afternoon walking the gardens and still have time afterward to get some food with family or friends.

Before you leave on your yearly summer vacation, you may put hours or days of preparation into the trip. Booking the tickets, getting a pet sitter, and finding the right hotel are just a few of the things you have to accomplish before you depart. However, one of the facets of vacationing that you may forget about is the security of your Everett apartment while you’re away.

While locking your door is an excellent first step in making sure your apartment is secure, there are some other things you may want to consider as you plan your vacation.

Make Arrangements for Your Mail Delivery

One of the most obvious signs that you’re not around and at home to prevent burglaries is a pile of newspapers outside your apartment or a mailbox that’s stuffed with mail. A quick call to your local newspaper to which you subscribe is easy, and most newspapers have automated systems online or via phone that will let you stop your paper delivery for a few weeks.

Consider a Visiting Pet Sitter

You may wish to board your pet for its safety while you’re away, but you may also wish to consider the services of a visiting pet sitter. You can arrange to have someone drop by once or twice a day for feedings, bathroom time, and to check on the status of your apartment in Everette. If someone is thinking of conducting some thievery in your apartment, he or she might reconsider if they see a pet sitter heading in and out of your apartment each day.

Tip: Although it’s best to keep the feeding times of your pets rather consistent, you may wish to ask your pet sitter to vary his or her visit by about an hour each day. Unpredictability is a huge deterrent to thieves.

Make Sure Your Automatic Lights are Random

You may use an automatic lighting system to turn on your lights at regular intervals while you’re at home, but you may also wish to switch things, so they’re a bit random while you’re away. An old fashioned automatic lighting system might not have the option, but new systems will often offer programming options to randomize when and where your lights come on each evening.

Don’t Broadcast Your Upcoming Vacation

If you’ve been planning a summer vacation all year, you’re probably quite excited about your trip, but it’s important to remember that thieves are excited about your trip, too. You can keep your vacation plans secure by keeping your social media profiles private and only alerting your Everett apartment community manager that you’ll be away.

The best way to make sure your impending absence isn’t knowledge that gets into the wrong hands is to remain quiet about your upcoming trip until after you return. Family members or a friend you might ask to check in on your apartment while you’re away are people you may wish to tell about your vacation before the event occurs.

Are you searching for a new apartment in Everett? Are you trying to decide whether to upgrade the size of your apartment or move into a cozy, small apartment? Many couples and families seek out the largest apartment they can find in their budget, but there are actually a variety of reasons a small apartment might actually make more sense.

The most obvious benefit of living in a small apartment is getting to enjoy what might be a smaller rental payment; however, there are several additional pluses you might not be aware of regarding cozy apartment life.

Small Apartments Offer Luxuries You Can Afford

If you live in a small apartment, you might be able to afford a residence that also offers you access to some fun amenities that you wouldn’t have in an expensive apartment. For example, your Everett apartment at Colby Creek will come with access to an elegant clubhouse with Wi-Fi capability, a cardio fitness center, a sparkling outdoor swimming pool, and much more.

What you lack in space inside your cozy apartment, you’ll make up for in fun at the various amenities you’ll have access to in your apartment community. While a large and rather plain apartment without many amenities can help you relax with its space and airy feel, a cozy apartment can also feel like “home sweet home.”

You Can Try a Minimalist Lifestyle in a Small Everett Apartment

When you live in an apartment for a few years, it’s quite easy to accumulate a lot of stuff that can clutter your space, and moving into a smaller apartment can help you reduce the amount of clutter you have to deal with each day. Moving is the perfect time to sell, donate, and recycle items you no longer use, and you can accomplish this goal whether you’re moving into a small apartment or a huge, new house.

If you’re not sure whether you could enjoy a minimalist lifestyle, you have the option of putting the majority of your possessions into a storage unit for a few months and trying out a life free of clutter. You might find that you enjoy a clean interior and that your extra possessions would fare better in the hands of someone else who might use them regularly.

Enjoy More Money for Entertainment in a Small Apartment

A small apartment may cost less than a large apartment, and you can enjoy a larger budget for entertainment, as well as your yearly vacation when you choose to reduce your home size. You may also be able to adopt a hobby or participate in extra activities without worrying about spending too much money.

Although a smaller apartment might not necessarily come with a lower rental payment than a larger apartment in another area, you can try to seek out an apartment with a small one-bedroom floor plan and rent to match.

In the winter when you arrive home in the evening after a long day at work, the sun might already have set. Similarly, when you head to work in the morning, you might beat the sunrise when you head off to the office or your workplace. The spring and the time change to Daylight Savings Time offer the wonderful benefit of longer days and fewer commutes home from work in the dark.

March and April mean it’s time to trade hot chocolate and movie marathons for hiking boots and mountain bikes. Here are some of the ways you can welcome the spring this year in and around your Everett apartment.

Host a Spring-Themed Party at Your Everett Apartment

Invite your friends to a local park to enjoy an early spring gathering with barbecued burgers and hot dogs, or welcome your close friends over for a casual lunch one weekend afternoon. You’ll find it easy and fun to socialize with your friends, especially if you’ve been more friendly with your television remote and couch than with socializing during the winter. Reconnect with friends you haven’t seen in months and begin planning some summer adventures like hiking or bicycling.

De-clutter and Clean Out the Winter

The presence of self-storage companies, businesses that only sell containers, and television shows dedicated to organization are evidence that the average American has too much stuff. Somehow, it all seems to add up to a ton of things we have to store in closets, and “ample storage space” often seems to be one of the most important parts of a house hunt when a couple decides to search for a new home or apartment in Everett.

The spring brings changes in the weather, the length of days, and in the new growth of plants and trees, and it’s an excellent time to consider a weekend of traditional “spring cleaning” to make your apartment feel spacious.

Before jumping into the apartment hunt, consider the state of your apartment’s storage space. Is everything filled with items you haven’t used in years? Try to greet the spring with some recycling, donations, and deep cleaning in your apartment.

Try a New Activity Outside of Your Everett Apartment Rental

Trying something new can have a truly beneficial impact on your mental and physical health. Adopting an active hobby like cycling, walking, or hiking is the ideal way to take advantage of warmer temperatures that begin appearing in the spring. Trying something new can also ward off boredom and encourage you to get out of your downtown Everett apartment.

A new activity can be something as simple as learning a martial art by attending local classes or entering a 5K race and training to run your first 3.1 miles. You’ll find it invigorating to learn something new and accomplish new things. Maybe you’ve never run more than a mile before, and running a 5K will represent a feat you never thought you could conquer.

Are you moving across the country and relocating to Washington? Are you in the middle of looking for a new apartment in Everett? Is it time to leave behind your old, cramped apartment in favor of a new and spacious residence?

Finding a new apartment takes time and research, and you’ll probably feel a lot of relief after successfully submitting an application, submitting your deposit, and receiving the key to your new apartment. However, it may take some time for your new apartment to truly feel like a beautiful home of your very own.

Fortunately, there are a few things you can do to get the most out of your new apartment, as well as create the “homey” feeling you get when you walk over the threshold each night after work.

Keep in Touch with Friends

Moving takes a lot of time and energy, even if you’re just relocating across town. During the packing, moving, and unpacking, it becomes far too easy to lose track of friends and forget about socializing. You may find it beneficial to make an effort to socialize after moving into your new home, particularly if you’re finding it a little difficult to relax when you’re surrounded by boxes that you need to unpack.

If you’re still close geographically to your friends and you haven’t moved across the country, make an effort to invite them over for a visit soon after you move into your new luxury apartment. Your friends probably won’t care if all your boxes are unpacked or if your apartment looks turnkey and perfect. They’ll enjoy getting to see you, as well as getting to explore your new place with you.

Set a Deadline

After you get your bed set up and find your toothbrush, toothpaste, and the coffee maker, you might lose the motivation to get the rest of your boxes unpacked. If you’re prone to procrastination and think you’ll still have boxes sitting around for months after you move into your new home, you may wish to create a deadline for unpacking everything, even if getting rid of the boxes doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve put everything away or in its new place.

There are a few ways to make sure you aren’t living in a sea of boxes six months after you move into your new Everette apartment.

  1. Invite friends over to help you unpack and decorate.
  2. Get everything out of your boxes, even if you don’t put things away immediately.
  3. Tackle at least one room a day until your whole apartment is unpacked.
  4. Donate, sell, or recycle stuff before you move, so you don’t have as much to unpack.

It’s difficult to feel like you’ve arrived home if you’re surrounded by boxes while you eat dinner each night. Waking up in your own bed is nice, but it’s a hassle to see boxes piled up in the bathroom that are filled with toiletries you need to use each morning. The quicker you get your boxes and possessions unpacked, the quicker you’ll start to feel at home in your new apartment.

Enjoy Everett at Colby Creek
