As creative entrepreneurs, we all face road blocks and the success or failure of our business is based on how we overcome those. Our guest on the podcast today is the lovely Sandra Coan, and she’s a photographer and educator who loves learning. She would take those blocks as a chance to broaden her knowledge and then teach others how to handle those same road blocks!

Sandra splits her time 50/50 between newborn and family photography and education. At the base of her love of educating is a passion for helping others create thriving photography businesses. She speaks at conferences, teaches online classes, and offers coaching sessions all while averaging 250-300 portrait sessions a year!

Sandra started out teaching elementary school and transitioned to photography as a way to supplement her income. After seeing how rare it is to build a thriving photography business, she got back into teaching to help others make a living being a photographer. The industry changed her life in such a positive way, and she wants to help others change their lives, too!

At the heart of every good educator is a learner, and Sandra Coan is just that. Her passion for educating comes from seeing her own successes through self-teaching and wanting to help others see that same success. She taught herself basically everything she knows, including lighting. In 2011, she made the switch to shooting in film, a medium that is completely reliant on lighting… in Seattle, a city that can experience some serious darkness! She took this challenge and taught herself lighting, learning how to create that beautiful natural soft light that she used to get through her windows with studio lighting!

Sandra is a trailblazer who knows what she likes and goes full force toward it! She shares with us some very relatable challenges and mistakes, and I know you’re going to love listening to her talk as much as I did!

WHAT YOU’LL HEAR IN THIS EPISODE:

  • How Sandra got started teaching photography
  • How she splits her business between education and shooting
  • Online vs in-person teaching
  • Tips for leading potential clients to a sale
  • Challenges Sandra has faced in teaching
  • Mistakes Sandra’s made in business
  • Managing your e-mail lists

Have you ever been to a conference and felt that little bit of magic that’s made when a group of passionate, like-minded people come together? The room buzzes with energy and excitement. There is such a value to spending a weekend completely immersed in your craft, learning from both educators and attendees alike. So much so, that this form of investing in your business has grown into a huge market!

Our guest on the podcast today is Kat Schmoyer who chased her dream of hosting a conference for creatives, which has grown into Creative at Heart. After starting her wedding planning business, she saw a gap in the market for a certain type of conference. Creative at Heart was unique because it doesn’t just educate or provide networking opportunities: it very intentionally links these two to craft an experience where attendees feel like they’re on the same playing field as the speakers. Education is used as the framework for building connections, friendships, and community. Attendees leave the conference not only with new relationships, but also with a notebook full of ways to grow their business!

If you can’t already tell, Kat is a hustler. In the past 4 years she has started 3 companies and grew 2 while working a full time job! She follows her passions and instincts, frames a clear idea of what she wants, and goes after it full throttle. She understands that she’s going to get some no’s on the way to a yes. She is SUCH an inspiration!

Kat is both powerful and endearing and gives us some major insight into the world of conferences and also shares her real-life struggles. Whether you’re thinking about attending a conference, wanting to speak at one, or even if you dream of hosting, this podcast is for you! I can’t wait to hear what you think!!

WHAT YOU’LL HEAR IN THIS EPISODE

  • What the Creative at Heart Conference is and how Kat started it
  • Tips for pitching a new conference to potential educators
  • Mistakes Kat made in developing the conference
  • What causes conferences to fail
  • In-person vs online learning
  • Where Creative at Heart is headed next

If you could sum up your wedding in three words, what would they be?
Special, fun and happiness

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
Our Lady of Fatima is where we first met in the 8th grade — it brought our journey full circle to get married there!

What was your favorite wedding detail?
My veil! My two older sisters and two of my cousins have all worn it on their wedding days — the sisterhood of the traveling veil!

What is your favorite wedding memory from the day?
Our first look! We are so glad we chose to do a first look and have a moment for just the two of us before our wedding ceremony.

How did you incorporate your personalities into your wedding celebration?
We love to celebrate and party so having an amazing band for our reception was a priority! Big Night Dynamite did not disappoint — we didn’t leave the dance floor the whole night, which is exactly how we wanted it!

What is your wedding song?
Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You by Lauryn Hill

If you could sum up your wedding in three words, what would they be?
Classic, romantic, & energetic

Tell us about your wedding venue(s) and why you chose to get married there.
We wanted a space large enough to fit all of our guests and not have them feel cramped or stuck in one area. Also, we loved the floor to ceiling windows that faced St. Charles and the egg rolls are to die for!!

What was your favorite wedding detail?
All we were worried about was how fun our wedding was going to be, but Elyse Jennings Weddings has an eye for detail!! The candle wall is always an eye pleaser, but the bridal bouquet and the groom’s boutonniere were such small details that I loved. My favorite flower, anemone, was only part of my bouquet and his boutonniere and not in the other wedding flowers. It felt very connected and romantic. A second favorite was our sign in book! We wanted something that we would be able to display in our home and the Simon (Where y’at sign) was something different and perfect.

What is your favorite wedding memory from the day?
Hands down watching Michael perform his “Mick Jagger” dance.

How did you incorporate your personalities into your wedding celebration?
We made sure to pick the most energetic band that would interact with the crowd. Also, we made sure to pick our favorite foods such as grilled cheese and even brought in one of our favorite restaurants, Blue Oak BBQ!

What is your wedding song?
You & Me by Dave Matthews
