Carol's Cookies bakes handmade gourmet cookies with all-natural ingredients. Our mission is to continue to make the best, most unique cookies on the planet...well, at least in the US! To never sacrifice quality for anything!
This year’s International Woman’s Day theme is #BalanceForBetter – which ties in nicely with one of Carol’s favorite quotes:
Business women and entrepreneurs are a force to be reckoned with.
And, these women are working hard and making names for themselves. One in five firms with revenue of $1 million or more is woman-owned. And 4.2% of all women-owned firms have revenues of $1 million or more.* But with 50% of the population being female, there is room, lots of room for more women to step into leading positions within companies as well as follow their dreams into starting their own businesses.
Carol’s Cookies was started by one woman, Carol, with a love of baking, and a belief that she was making something people would love. It was started out of Carol’s home kitchen, and debuted to consumers at a local grocer who thought their customers would like her cookies. That was 40 years ago. Now, Carol’s Cookies hires a staff of 30+ employees, ships her handmade cookies to all 50 states, and retails across America at huge grocers like Whole Foods and Sprouts. There were growing pains, 3 bakery upgrades, and some failures (does anyone remember the Oat Bran Cookie?). But throughout, Carol believed she brought something unique to the market that would speak for itself.
Today, we want to celebrate Carol, and all the other women in the workforce who are giving it their all because they believe in what they’re doing and what they bring to the market. Whether that be services they provide, or a product.
Chicago is lucky to have so many female-owned or run businesses. Check out Bossy Chicago to discover some of these businesses and help encourage women entrepreneurs in their endeavors by thinking of them when you are choosing where to spend your money. Hopefully you’re able to celebrate International Woman’s Day by checking out some of your local woman owned/run businesses.
If you’re in Chicagoland, why don’t you check out some of these awesome companies, rocking it with female leads.
5. Valentine’s Day Cards. Is there anything worse? Whether you go sweet and sappy or a simple little rhyme time poem – they all have the potential to make you cringe. How wonderful is it to simply breeze past the combustion of pink and red at Hallmark.
4. Valentine’s day falls on Thursday. That means you’ll be up late on a compulsory date night mid-work week, leaving you to barely crawl through your Friday. Who wants to start the weekend that way? Instead, take on Friday well-rested and be ready to tackle the rest of your well-earned weekend.
3. No stress. Are they getting you a gift? How much should you spend on their gift? You can’t get a reservation anywhere. What should you wear? FORGET ABOUT IT! You don’t need that type of stress in your life.
2. It’s February! You barely made it through January. It’s cold. You’re pale. You’re not even getting a long weekend out of this holiday. It’s all so cliché. Why bother?
1. Keep your wallet and tummy full! You deserve to celebrate yourself with a tin of Carol’s Cookies. I mean, who loves you more than you anyways, right? “Please” and “thank you” are the magic words you’re taught as a child, but they continue to be important in your vocabulary for life. Everyone appreciates the courtesy, from the barista at Starbucks to the driver that let you pull into traffic in from of them during the morning commute. And you know who else would appreciate the courtesy? Your clients!
Reminding your clients or customers how thankful you are for their patronage is a great way for both you and your recipients to feel good. Reminding them that they had a good experience, and satisfaction in working with your company can keep you top-of-mind when someone asks, “We need to update some things around the house. Do you know where I can go for help?”
Carol’s Cookies also lives by this mantra and we also send out thank you gifts to our clients every year showing our appreciation to them. Guess what we send? (HINT: They are handmade and delicious.) Nothing makes us happier then when we see our clients doing the same. We are always delighted to work with companies like Flaherty’s Flooring of Texas who send out our handmade cookies in special thank you gift tins. Just last month they sent a few hundred to their premier customers. The gift that keeps on giving….it’s a fantastic gesture that their customers appreciate when you recognize them for their business.
We have hundreds of clients that order monthly to say thanks for referrals, for a job well done, thanking customers for their business, employee appreciation gifts, special occasions, etc. There reasons to send handmade cookies is endless, really. Go ahead, say thank you with one of our cookie tins, and you’ll find that you will actually get a “thank you” in return for years to come.
Promises, promises, promises. Let’s be honest, we all make promises to better ourselves but not all of us follow through. According to Statistic Brain– only 8% of resolution makers succeed, and this isn’t shocking anyone. Starting just a few days into January 2016 and continuing throughout the month your newsfeed was most likely inundated with articles, compilations, and jokes about new years resolutions and how easy they are to break. E! trolled twitter to find their favorite resolution breakers, Jimmy Kimmel dedicated a whole hilarious segment to it, and the New York Times attempted to debunk the myths surrounding your well-intended goals.
We’re not going to do any of that.
We’re going to take 10 of the most popular resolutions made every January 1st and make it easier for you…and show you how Carol’s can help!
Resolution #1. Work out more
Our cookies weigh nearly a half-pound each! Let’s not discount the workout you get every time you bring one of our monster cookies to your lips – it’s some serious iron pumping. But if you really want to step it up, hold two Carol’s Cookies in each hand and do as many reps of curls, rows, and shoulder presses as you can. Then treat yourself with a sweet reward for all your hard work.
Resolution #2. Eat healthier, whole foods with ingredients you understand
Our cookies are handmade in small batches using only premium ingredients. Barry Callebaut Chocolate, select California raisins, rolled oats, pure cane sugars and 100% real butter are a few things you will find in our handmade cookies. In fact, we still crack our own farm fresh eggs every morning. Want the full list of our ingredients? See here.
Resolution #3. Travel more
What better road trip than going to across the country to visit a new Whole Foods location, or a fresh spot for lunch (may we recommend Yats, RJ Grunts, or Epic Burger) where when you arrive you can be comforted by our delicious cookies?
Resolution #4. Give more/be more generous
Break that Carol’s cookie in half! Or at least into fourths….and then give ¼ away. See, you’re being generous. It is YOUR cookie after all.
Resolution #5. Save more money
Buy our cookies in bulk of course! You can order a bulk shipment of our cookies right to your door! 36 individually wrapped cookies for under $100! Luckily, our cookies freeze fantastically.
Resolution #6. Learn something new
Have you seen our YouTube Page? We have a collection of videos just waiting to teach you a thing or two in the kitchen from Carol herself. Whether you want to know how to make a cookie pie crust or cookie pizza, we are there to educate.
Resolution #7. Shop local
Our cookies are each made by hand in a small, privately owned bakery. Carol started baking in the Midwest and the Midwest is still where she (and her cookies) calls home. Give our bakery a call on any day, and the odds are, Carol will be the one answering the phone. We’re that local.
Resolution #8. Stop smoking
Put down the cigarette and you might struggle with idle hands. Just pick up one of our cookies to fulfill your craving.
Resolution #9. Improve a relationship
Maybe your boss is annoyed at the amount of times you’ve been “stuck in traffic.” A friend has been icy since you forget her birthday? Or, you’re planning ahead for the possible argument on Valentine’s Day? Whatever relationship is strained, our cookies can help patch that up in no time. Who can stay mad at someone when they’ve been given one of our handmade cookies?
Resolution #10. Eat less sweets
We can’t help you there, and you wouldn’t want us to! Why would you ever want to eat less sweets?
Fall: Is there any other season that gets people so excited for seasonal treats? Sure, summer has fruity cocktails and winter has eggnog…but they can’t hold a candle to fall. Fall lets you start to indulge in hot drinks that warm your hands while enjoying the vibrant colors and last days of sunshine in crisp air. But, fall also invites you to raid the spice cabinet and introduce bold, aromatic flavors that get your senses going.
Because of these intense or rich flavors, it takes a delicate balance to find the perfect compliment to your favorite fall drink fix. You wouldn’t want to be overwhelmed, would you? Lucky for you, we’ve got you covered.
Cider with Toffee Crunch Cookie
Carmel apples anyone? Hot or cold, cider brings the spicy sweet, but needs our smooth, handmade Toffee Crunch Cookie to really even out the flavors.
Mulled Wine with the Carol’s Brownie Cookie
A red wine and chocolate pairing is a no brainer. The mulling spices with dry red wine are able to tackle the over-the-top chocolate experience of our rich, chocolate Brownie Cookie.
Pumpkin Spice Latte with the Old-fashioned Sugar Cookie
Let’s be honest, there’s a lot of flavors going on in a pumpkin spice drink. They taste almost identical to a pumpkin pie, but are missing one essential thing- the crust! That’s why we recommend pairing our buttery sugar cookie with your favorite pumpkin spice beverage to fill the crust void and make a well-rounded dessert.
Hot Cocoa with Carol’s Cookies Snickerdoodle
Unless you’re having a Mexican hot chocolate, this drink warms your hands, but can bog you down with too much sweetness. Just spice it up! We recommend our perfectly cinnamon spiced Snickerdoodle Cookie to cut through the sweet and get you into the mood of the season.
Ginger Beer and Oatmeal Chocolate Cherry
Not always your first thought for a fall beverage, but our Oatmeal Chocolate Cherry Cookie isn’t always your first cookie choice (It’s okay, we know…) But the spice of this drink craves the sweetness of dried cherries and smooth dark chocolate. This pair will give you all the fall feels, trust us!
What’s your favorite fall drink combo paired with Carol’s Cookies?
Mom’s…they’re the best aren’t they? They carry you for 9 months, they bandage up your skinned knees, they sew your Halloween costumes, they help with college admissions, they’re always there to give you life advice, and if you’re lucky, they give you a job too.
In 1979, Carol’s Cookies was born as a hobby out of Carol’s home kitchen, and she sold her first cookie at a local fitness center. And in 1998, with dozens of upscale clients all over the United States and a growing Cookie Gift Tin delivery demand, she hired on her son Jeff shortly after he graduated from Tulane University.
Despite spending decades raising your child, it’s not always a realistic expectation that a mother-child team will excel in workplace. But, Carol and Jeff both prioritize a handmade product, upholding family values and customer service, and, of course, keeping Carol’s Cookies’ recipe a secret.
How did it come about that Jeff came to work in the cookie biz?
After he graduated from college and moved back home, I needed help during the fourth quarter when it gets busy. We were so small, five or six employees…and it was all women, no men. There was a lot of manual labor to do so I knew we could use his help.
Is Jeff more like you, or your husband?
Jeff is a mix of both of us. He has my husband’s business sense and is tough when he needs to be. But, he also is very generous and treats everyone as if they are family…that’s from me. We both have obsessive work ethics…so he is always working. Sorry, Jeff.
When you started 38 years ago out of your home kitchen, would you ever imagine you’d be working with your son?
I never thought I would still be working, but I have so much fun. I never even imagined Jeff entering the business, but if he didn’t join me, we wouldn’t be coast-to-coast like we are today…or making over 6-million handmade cookies a year either!
How do you and Jeff compliment each other’s work styles at the bakery?
Good cop, bad cop. Guess which is which… J Let’s just say, we keep each other in line.
What’s the best part about working with your son?
Being together on a daily basis and doing what we love…makes it less of a job and allows me to enjoy it more.
And we wanted to ask Jeff….
What are you most proud of your mother for?
Putting a smile on her face every day no matter what….and being sweet to every person she meets. It’s not easy, but she’s the master at it.
Did you ever imagine you’d be working with your mom in a national cookie business?
Never. But looking back, I always found it easy to sell these handmade cookies because the passion was instilled in me at a very young age. Starting in elementary school, I would steal cookies from the freezer at home and sell them out of my locker. Kids used to line up. I even found buyers for the raw dough! It was a natural fit for me when she asked me to help her during the holidays.
What’s the best part about working with your mom?
Watching the reaction of people at demos or at shows when they realize it’s the real Carol. She’s a rock star. I never get tired of that. Oh, and she’s the best boss anybody could ever ask for. Watching her in action every day is inspiring and I’m lucky to have the opportunity to be with her every day.
Whether your mom gave you life, or perhaps a job…. there’s a lot to be thankful for the mothers in our lives. Why not show your mom you’re thinking of her and grateful for all she’s done for you this Mother’s Day? And, who knows what a mom wants more than a mom like Carol?
Order the perfect gift for your mom, homemade by a mom, right HERE and receive 15% with promo code: CookiesForMom17. Be sure to order by 1pm CST on May 10th in order to guarantee delivery for Mother’s Day.
Valentine’s Day is a difficult holiday to navigate. If you just started dating, what’s an appropriate gift that’s thoughtful, but doesn’t scare them off? If you’ve been committed to your partner for years, it might feel like another “Hallmark”” holiday just to get you to spend money…but you still wouldn’t want to show up empty-handed. Whatever your situation may be, you’re probably searching for the perfect gift. And maybe you think you’ve found THE perfect gift? Good for you!
But…you haven’t. We’re here to help…and to start, we have to tell you these Vday no-no’s so you don’t make a mistake and embarrass yourself in front of your loved one:
Name Tattoo – Woah, slow your roll. Note to self: Tattoos don’t wash off with soap and water.
Gym Membership – This is a slippery slope any way you cut it. Odds are, if your significant other has any interest in a gym, they know where they can get a membership. Would steer clear of this “thoughtful” gift.
Fatal Attraction DVD – Great way to motivate your loved one to enter the witness relocation program! Sure, there are some racy and exciting scenes…but they definitely won’t outweigh all the, ahem, minor undertones of adultery and psychotic obsession.
Tandem Glove – Even if you are the most co-dependent couple on earth…the times when your partner would benefit from their own pair of gloves versus a shared set with you are significant. And, if you’re not the most co-dependent couple on earth, this gift is as silly as a tandem Snuggie.
Heart Shaped Candy Box – Nothing screams last minute Walgreens drive-by more.
Nothing – Out of the aforementioned gifts, this is probably the safest. Except when your love bug shows up with a thoughtful gift for you on February 14th even though you both agreed on a strict “no gift” policy. Try to avoid this uncomfortable silence at all costs.
So, we’ve made this easy for you. A great gift, that’s not a huge investment but shows you’ve thought ahead. A gift that won’t scare your love interest away, but won’t leave them wondering if you care. And, best of all, a gift that you can enjoy as well…………
THE GIFT OF CAROL’S COOKIES!
A large gift tin with 12 of our handmade, mouth-watering cookies, a small tin with 7 of our seven-ounce cookies, or a reusable latte cup filled with 8 of our Minis. Any of our gifts will bring a smile to your partner’s face on Valentine’s Day, and a sweet treat for you will be waiting for you in return….hubba hubba.
You can’t deny, fall is in the air. Mornings are getting crisper. The leaves are changing colors. And you can’t get through one day’s worth of Instagram without seeing a picture of a girl in Uggs and a scarf holding a pumpkin spice latte.
And this year, we’ve let our guard down and want to get in on the pumpkin-madness as well. We started in our bakery using what we already had: Snickerdoodle cookies.
Pumpkin Cheesecake w. Snickerdoodle Cookie Crumb Crust
We were feeling quite inspired by how well our cookies naturally pair with pumpkin, and decided to take it one step further. Pumpkin Milk Chocolate Chunk Cookies. Any taste testers out there?
Unfortunately (for you guys), these cookies weren’t able to be picked up in time for any retailers this season and we had to eat them all ourselves. But we’re hoping that next fall you can find handmade Pumpkin Milk Chocolate Chunk Cookies on shelves near you.
Do you want to see (and taste) a pairing of Carol’s Cookies and Pumpkin flavors? Let us know by tweeting at us @CarolsCookies or commenting on our Facebook Page.
