I love hotteok. So far I have seen two types of hotteok. One which is deep fried and one which is healthier, less oily, crunchier and a bit dry. I love them both because of the caramel and pine nuts filling just made my day anytime during the cool time like the spring season now and cold season. Scratch that. In fact it is marvellous at any time of the day.

When I used to be a tour guide back then, I love checking out places which is not straight from the itinerary, wandering around with my guests until they couldn’t walk anymore..hehe.. like this hotteok shop in Namdaemun: Appa Hotteok.

The weather was quite chilly on that day, so we stopped by here to grab a bite after my guests checking out the fermented food around that corner.

Appa Hotteok is not located on the main street. A rare gem. They have been operating at the same spot for more than 40 years. What is more shocking is that on 2015 when I visited the place, the price of their hotteok is ONLY 700 won while other shops sell at least 1,000 or 1,200 won per piece.

PLUS…if you buy three pieces, it will cost you only 2,000 won. This price was in 2015. Perhaps the price is increased now but still.. I love the whole ambience and experience when talking with the ahjusshi and having tasted his masterpiece which he has perfected for more than 40 years. A real sonsengnim!

How to go to Appa Hotteok?

When you get out of Hoehyeon Station exit 5, turn to your right which is into the market area OR if from this picture, just go straight until you find a tourist information box right in the middle of the market as in the picture below.

Follow the arrow and walk straight again until you find a souvenir shop on your right at the intersection.

Then turn to your left.

From here walk straight, until you find a parking area on your left and then turn right at the junction.

Turn right and walk ahead a bit. The shop is on your left like in the picture below.

If you’re lucky you will be able to meet the owner’s son who is quite handsome, K-pop level standard..hehe. You can check out his face in this naver blog and another review of this place also from naver here. Both are in Korean language though.

Enjoy your hotteok and remember me when you visit this place. Anyong!

Mount Seorak is gorgeous. I definitely love its view in autumn but winter and spring will be just amazing too. Read my Mount Seorak 2D1N trip with a budget cost here and my Mount Seorak one day trip here. The above picture was taken on 8th of April 2015.

First and foremost, there are two options (with express bus) to go from Seoul to Sokcho; where Mount Seorak is located.

Option 1:
You can take express bus from Dong Seoul Terminal (Gangbyeon Station, Subway Line 2) and it will arrive at Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal.

Dong Seoul Express Bus Terminal

Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal

Option 2:
You can take express bus from Gangnam Terminal (Express Bus Terminal Station, Subway Line 3,7,9) and the bus will arrive at Sokcho Express Bus Terminal.

Sokcho Express Bus Terminal

It all depends on where do you stay at Sokcho and what is your next plan?

For me, if I want to go to Nami Island after visiting Seorak Mountain, I will take the first option because the bus to Chuncheon goes from Sokcho Intercity Bus Terminal.

If you plan to go back to Seoul immediately, either station from Seoul does not matter.

Express Bus Ticket Online Purchase

At the moment the English site is not equipped with online purchase however the Korean site is possible.

For DongSeoul (Gangbyeon Terminal) to Sokcho, buy the ticket online from the websites below:

English site: http://www.kobus.co.kr/web/eng/index.jsp

Korean site: http://www.kobus.co.kr/web/main/index.jsp

For Express bus terminal to Sokcho, buy the ticket online from the website below:

Korean site: http://www.exterminal.co.kr/

The ticket price differs between date of purchase, departure time and terminals. Basically it is between 17,000~20,000won per one way journey.

If you don’t know Korean, just ask the reception of your boarding in Seoul to do the ticket purchase online a few days before you go to Mount Seorak. They will gladly help you.
