UDOT Recommends Tips for Memorial Day Travel

Plan ahead for delays on I-15; put away distractions and avoid drowsy driving

SALT LAKE CITY (May 22, 2019) – The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) recommends drivers plan ahead for I-15 delays along the Wasatch Front this Friday and Monday due to holiday traffic for the Memorial Day weekend.

Traffic engineers expect delays on Friday of up to 40 minutes on southbound I-15 through Salt Lake and Utah counties, and up to 30 minutes on northbound I-15 through Davis County. Increased traffic is expected Friday between 1 p.m. and 7 p.m., with heaviest delays during the evening commute.

On Monday, delays for return trips could reach 20 minutes on northbound I-15 between Provo and Nephi, and up to 10 minutes on U.S. 6 in Spanish Fork Canyon. Congestion on Monday will start building around 2 p.m. and continue through 8 p.m.

Across the state, most UDOT projects will suspend construction and open all lanes to traffic to help reduce delays during Memorial Day weekend (Friday through Monday). However, existing lane restrictions or traffic shifts will remain in place where needed to protect the work zone and ensure safety. Some areas where drivers should expect restrictions include:

I-15 Technology Corridor: On I-15 in Lehi, two southbound lanes will close near State Street from Friday, May 24, at 11 p.m. to Saturday, May 25, at 8 a.m. for bridge construction. In addition, the northbound lanes are split from 2100 North to S.R. 92, and the speed limit is reduced to 60 miles per hour through the construction zone from S.R. 92 to Main Street. Drivers should be alert when traveling through the work zone and anticipate areas of rough or uneven pavement.

I-70 Bridge Maintenance, Sevier County: I-70 is reduced to one lane in each direction just east of exit 7, with all traffic shifted into the westbound lanes. The speed limit is reduced to 60 miles per hour through the work zone, and drivers should plan for delays due to slow trucks climbing the hill.

UDOT reminds drivers to be cautious behind the wheel and do their part in making travel safer for everybody by staying alert, using seat belts, putting away distractions, and taking breaks to avoid drowsy driving.

Construction schedules are weather-dependent and subject to change. For the latest information on traffic restrictions during construction, visit the UDOT Traffic website (udottraffic.utah.gov) or download the UDOT Traffic app for iPhone or Android. Drivers can also follow UDOT on social media including Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram.

UDOT to Install New Radar-Equipped Wildlife Crossing Signs to Reduce Deer Collisions

Radar will detect deer in the area and activate warning lights so drivers can use extra caution

WHAT:
The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) is installing new radar-equipped wildlife crossing signs along S.R. 73 in Eagle Mountain to make the highway safer for both drivers and animals. These signs are being placed in a one-mile section of the highway that has seen nearly 100 deer-related collisions in the past four years.

This is the first time UDOT has used radar-equipped signs to reduce wildlife collisions. The signs are equipped with LEDs that flash when deer are detected in the area.

Leslie Beck, UDOT’s Saratoga Springs maintenance station supervisor, saw radar-equipped signs for other applications at UDOT’s annual conference and thought that wildlife detection would be a good use for this technology. The manufacturer worked with UDOT to develop this new type of sign, which will be tested in this location and potentially installed in other areas.

WHEN:
Tuesday, May 14, at 10 a.m.

WHERE:
S.R. 73 milepost 31 (just east of Six Mile Cutoff Road) in Eagle Mountain

WHO:
Leslie Beck, UDOT maintenance station supervisor

Seasonal Road Closures - YouTube

Because of an unusual amount of snow in northern Utah’s high mountain canyons, a number of seasonal roads will be opened to traffic later than usual. Fifteen to 20-foot accumulations of snow will likely not be melted sufficiently to have these roads opened by Memorial Day, as has been customary. This includes Guardsman Pass, the Mirror Lake Highway and Monte Cristo. From Utah County to the south, UDOT crews are expecting to have all seasonal roads open by Memorial Day. This includes Wolf Creek Pass, the Alpine Loop, Cedar Breaks and Mt. Holly Junction Road. To check the current status of Utah’s seasonal roads please click here.
