Let’s face it – a good night’s sleep is a beautiful thing. On the flip side, lack of sleep can sure mess with that beautiful thing known as your face! Yes, we can all agree that getting enough “beauty sleep,” is pretty important. But who really has time for that and running the world? Whether you crammed all night for a test, or your new baby is a sleepless, milk-crazed car alarm, you probably could use some help looking less like the walking dead the next morning. Since more sleep is definitely not an option, keep reading. We’ve got some beauty hacks that will have you looking like you took a dive in the fountain of youth on your way out the door!

Close the windows

If eyes are the windows to your soul, they can also be a dead giveaway you didn’t get enough z’s. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to brighten up your eyes without napping the day away. Dab a little eye cream around your upper and lower lids, followed by a bit of concealer. Choose a concealer that’s a touch lighter than your skin tone and you’re good to go!

Go bright or go home

Lining your bottom lid with a nude or white eyeliner is another great tip for brightening up your eyes. For an even brighter effect, use a super light eye shadow and dab the inside corner of your eye.

Glowing skin is always in

How do you pull off a well-rested, dewy glow when you’re just not well-rested? Highlighter! Tilt your head down and slowly tilt your head back up, highlighting any shadows you see on your face. Voila! The darkest areas of your face will shine with a dewy glow.

Brighter lips, brighter smile

Whether you’re rocking a classic red lip or a pretty pink pout, put some lipstick on and pull yourself together! Bright or bold lips become the focal point of your face and help distract from any other unrested attributes.

The next time that “just one episode” turns into an all-night Netflix marathon, don’t sweat it! You can still look bright-eyed and bushy-tailed with a few simple tricks. Going to school while trying to juggle work and a personal life all at the same time is no easy task. After all, no one wants to be the poor college student. So naturally, the urge to ask your financial aid office for more money seems like the easiest thing to do. Financial aid* is there to assist you with covering the costs of your education, but that doesn’t always mean that it’s “free money”. What steps can you take in order to have the things you need, without driving your future-self crazy with debt? We’ve some tips on borrowing responsibly.

Only borrow what you need

Getting a refund check for the amount of your financial aid that is in excess of your program cost seems like a great idea, but remember, student loans have to be repaid. Make sure that you are using your financial aid towards educational costs and not your spring break trips. Be wise and prioritize your wants from your needs to spend wisely.

Pay interest on student loans

All student loans have interest. Subsidized loans have no interest while you are going to school at least half time. Unsubsidized loans have interest during all periods of the loan. Any unpaid interest will accrue and be added to the principal amount of your loan. You can choose to pay the interest on the unsubsidized loans while you are in school. By doing this, it will reduce your overall loan balance.

Know your repayment options

The Department of Education offers several student loan repayment plans. Read and research to pick the one best for your circumstances. Standard repayment plan allows you to have a fixed monthly payment for 10 years. You will know exactly what your monthly payment will be every month for the repayment period. Graduated is also paid back over 10 years, but the monthly payment will start low and gradually increase, usually every two years, during the repayment period. With this option you will pay back more in interest than in the Standard repayment plan. There are also repayment options that are based on your income. You can change your repayment plan at any time with your loan servicer for free.

Avoid default

Sometimes life gets in the way and you may fall on hard times, but that does not necessarily mean your student loans go away. If you find that you can no longer afford your student loan payment, contact your loan servicer immediately. You may be eligible for deferment or forbearance that allows you to temporarily postpone or reduce the amount of your student loan payment. By using one of these options, it will allow you to avoid default on your student loans. If you go into default on your student loans, you will not be able to receive financial aid, it will affect your credit score and your wages, as well as your tax refund, may be garnished.

Investing in your future is one of the best things that you can do! In order to set yourself up for the best future possible, you should start making good financial decisions now. Don’t let the fears of student loan payments hold you back from pursuing a career that you are passionate about. Shore Beauty School’s financial aid office is always readily available to help you on your path to success!

*Financial Aid is available to those who qualify

Springtime Skin Saviors

After months of frosty temperatures, layered clothing, and heavy face creams – take a deep breath folks! Because spring is finally here. Time to freshen your wardrobe, do some spring cleaning, and revamp your skincare routine. And we’ve got some great tips to that will have your skin Springtime-ready in no time!

Out with the old, in with the new – Dry, winter skin probably had you avoiding too much exfoliating. But now it’s time to get rid of those dead, dull skin cells and unveil fresh, new skin! Use a gently exfoliating scrub 2 to 3 times a week to get gorgeously, glowing skin!

Let the sun shine – Just don’t do it without sunscreen. Using sunscreen year-round is important but as the UV levels rise, so should your commitment to applying sunscreen. Protect your skin by using at least 30 SPF sunscreen under your makeup and in your body lotion.

Oil and water – It’s a great idea to use heavier face creams to combat the dryness of Winter air. But when the temperatures and humidity levels rise, the air is already full of moisture. Swap out those oil-based creams for lighter, water-based serums or gels. They offer the same skincare benefits without clogging your pores and leaving your skin feeling greasy.

Dust off your brushes – Dirty makeup brushes can collect pore-clogging, breakout-causing bacteria. Get into the spirit of spring cleaning and give your brushes a thorough washing. Clean them with a gentle hand soap in the sink or bring them into the shower with you and use a gentle body wash.

All season and skincare regimens are not created equal. So, adjust your skincare routine accordingly with the seasons to maintain healthy, glowing skin. If you’ve got a passion for skincare, maybe a career in the beauty and wellness industry is right for you! With the demand for talented skincare specialists and estheticians on the rise, it’s a great time to be in the business of beauty. If you’re ready to spring forward into a future in the beauty industry, contact your local state licensing board for a list of beauty schools and programs near you.

5 Tips for Healthier Hair

It’s a real contradiction that getting the gorgeous hair we want can require tools that wreak havoc on our hair. But what’s a girl to do? It’s not like we’re parting with our flat irons, fresh color or blow dryers any time soon. Don’t toss those hair taming tools yet because you can keep your hair shiny and healthy-looking with 5 simple tips.

Less is more

When it comes to shampooing your hair, even oily hair doesn’t always need washing every day. Over-shampooing your hair can remove the moisture your hair needs, making it prone to damage and frizz.

Treat your hair like fine china

Especially wet hair which is fragile and breaks easier. So, be gentle and avoid brushing your hair when it’s super wet. And trade in your cotton bath towel for soft microfiber or an old t-shirt and blot hair dry.

Keep it loose

Putting your hair into a ponytail with an elastic hair tie is great for getting quick control over unruly hair. Skip the tight elastic bands, which can damage your cuticles, causing breakage. Try the well-loved cloth scrunchie to help keep your hair friction-free and fabulous.

Stay on the cutting edge

The cutting edge of your stylist’s shears! Regular trims are a must! Having your ends trimmed on a regular basis will take care of any split ends and help keep hair looking healthy.

Cool things down

We all know heat is a blessing and a curse when it comes to your hair. We couldn’t imagine facing the day without our super-hot flat irons and blow dryers. Give your hair a cool rinse after shampooing to close those cuticles and prevent frizz. For the same reason, blast your hair with the cool setting on the blow dryer during a blowout.

Give your hair the treatment it deserves and make every day a good hair day! If you’re passionate about rocking beautiful hair and creating signature styles, a career in cosmetology may be right for you! The beauty industry is growing and the demand for talented cosmetologists is on the rise. To learn more about the world of cosmetology, contact your local state licensing board to find programs and schools in your area.

Let’s face it, whether you travel for business or pleasure, the very act of traveling can take a toll on us for a number of reasons. Stress, dry airplane cabin air, dehydration and even blood flow inhibiting, high altitudes during flights all contribute to less than beautiful skin and can have you feeling less than glowing. Combine that with the unfortunate 3 oz rule for your liquid-based beauty products and it can be an all-out beauty battle to look and feel your best as you roam about the country. What’s a skin-conscious traveler to do? Don’t sweat it! We’ve got the must have beauty essentials you need to help you look and feel goodwhile you take your show on the road!

Heed the warnings –The 3 oz warnings. Cramming your favorite beauty products in a 3 oz container may seem like a royal pain. What’s worse is having your full-size faves tossed in the trash because they don’t meet the TSA requirements?! First must-have beauty essential for travel? Reusable 3 oz containers, (available at just about any drug store or major retailer) that allows you to bring the best of your collection on board with no problem! PS – Don’t forget the clear quart-size bags!

A quick cleanse is better than no cleanse at all –If you’re traveling light and can’t bring the full toner, cleanser, moisturizer kit in a carry-on bag, a great alternative is a good-quality travel size pack of makeup wipes. They don’t count as a liquid and can give you a much-needed freshening up without the hassle of lugging your entire skincare kit. Choose wipes with aloe or moisturizer to help combat that airplane cabin air.

Good things come in small packages –This is one time when less is definitely more! Most eye creams come in smaller than 3 oz sizes, making them a must have for keeping your eyes looking rested and without the larger-than-life size container.

We all scream for sunscreen –It’s the one thing that you should never, ever leave home, much less travel without. After all, if you get stuck in Miami on an extended layover, why hide inside from all that fabulous sun! A tinted sunscreen can be a multi-purpose essential so grab a full-size bottle of your favorite 30+ SPF or look for a just right travel size!

Whether you’re traveling for business or pleasure, one thing remains the same – neither is going to go well without the beauty essentials that keep you looking and feeling good!If you’ve got a soft spot for beautiful things and things that make other things beautiful – maybe you should consider a career in the world of beauty! Talented cosmetologists and estheticians are out there right now blazing their own trail with style in the beauty industry. For more information about careers in the beauty industry, contact your local state licensing board for a list of schools and programs offered in your area!

Riding romantic waves – Nothing screams romance more than tousled, side-swept waves. And it’s not a hard look to pull off if you have some natural wave to your hair. Blow-dry with a large round brush after applying a bit of volume spray, sweeping it to the side. Make some waves in super-straight hair with the help of a curling iron and a spritz of hair spray.

Apply black eyeliner to your top and bottom lid, followed by a blend of shadows that pair well with your eye color. Green eyes look gorgeous with gray/plum, brown eyes with blue/gray, and blue eyes pop with gold/copper shadow blends.

Racy red lips – It’s never cliché to sport the reddest of red lips – no matter what the occasion is. But somehow it feels especially right on V-Day. Whether you choose glossy and shimmering or a bold matte – you simply can’t go wrong with red.

Silky and sleek – Not to be outdone by romantic waves, straight, sleekly styled hair is glamorous accessory to any V-Day look. Use a good heat spray to protect your hair and blow dry in sections with a round brush. Finish with a once over from your trusty flat-iron for a super-smooth finish.

So, while you’re working your way into 2019, be sure to check out some of the nail trends that you will see everywhere this year.

Not your ordinary French – While we love the elegant look of pretty French tips, we absolutely adore this warm, Winter take on a classic, that foregoes the white line for a deep crimson paired with another thin metallic or black line. For even more pizazz, add a sprinkling of fine glitter to the darker line for a festive accent.

A rose by any other name – is gold – Rose-gold that is. It’s not just for jewelry or smart phones, it’s a super-gorgeous way to deck out your nails as you deck the halls! Look for rose-gold glitter polish at most of y our favorite retailers.

Foiled again – But in a good, gold-foil way. Especially when it’s gold foil accents carefully placed over a deep, holiday red polish. Rich and glamorous, this look begs to be paired with matching red lips!

Icicle-Princess – Channel your inner “Frozen” princess with delicately pointed and painted icicles at the tips of your nails. This uber-frosty look begins with pale, ice blue polish with icicles hand-painted vertically from one side of your nails to the other, starting at the tip of the nail and stopping about halfway, alternating colors in white, grey and silver glitter in varying lengths.

Winter flannel – It’s not just for lumberjacks and winter jammies – warm, whimsical plaid is a perfect way to show your love of all things winter! Start with a white base, (or any lighter color than the top coat) and carefully paint a plaid pattern checkerboard on each nail, creating every other “square” in diagonal stripes.

Who doesn’t love a chance to jazz up their look with the changing of the season! If you love changing up your nails and trying hot new styles, maybe you should consider a career in the creative world of nail artistry! Ancient Greek philosopher and poet, Aristotle, said – “To appreciate the beauty of a snowflake, it is necessary to stand out in the cold.” Well, if you’re going to be out appreciating all that wintry beauty this year, why not make sure you look good doing it? After all, just like every snowflake is unique, so are you! And our coolest season is the perfect time to try out a hot new hairstyle! We’ve rounded up some of this year’s go-to looks that making more than snow melt!

It’s a crazy shade of winter – Contrary to the classic song, all the leaves are not brown, they’re all pretty much gone and a great way to inspire your winter is to bring some fall color with you! This season, one of the hottest color trends is all about burnished bronze, copper tones and rich, radical shades of red that don’t just pop, they explode!

Bang for your buck – There always seems to be a style for bangs that comes and goes with the season from the long-side swept bangs to sweet, baby bangs cut so short you’re not sure if it was a mistake or not. But this winter there’s something for everyone and if you got ‘em, (bangs, that is) – flaunt ‘em! Whether it’s the thick full forehead fringe, the choppy punkish vibe, or the side-swept long and lovely glam look – every set of bangs is welcome this season!

In betweeners – Uber curls or sleek, stick straight hair? If you have one, you typically want the other. But the subtle wave of choice this season, is somewhere in between and we love it! Long, shoulder length, lob or bob – a touch of wave adds a touch of romance and is far less time-consuming than taming an unruly mop of corkscrews into submission with a flat-iron or perking up ultra-straight hair into a mass of curls. If you don’t want to commit to one or the other, try somewhere in between.

Hat Hair –The “throw a hat on it,” seems a bit too predictable and kind of a copout, right? That is, until you see the too cute selection of hats keeping hair under control this winter. Try a simple, soft knitted beanie that allows your hair to frame your face and can be purchased in almost any color! Or a traditional, but oh so playful, knitted beanie with that adorable pom-pom on the top. There are even hats that are more headband than hat making a debut this winter. Some of them are even embellished with adorable rhinestone buttons to add a little pizazz to that combination head-warmer/head-turner you’re sporting.

Arctic Fox – What screams winter more than ice? Icy platinum that is. When the backdrop is a grey, wintry sky, ultra-blond will have you channeling your inner ice princess. Be sure to use a great toning shampoo and conditioner for this style to look perfectly platinum without looking like your hair is dried and fried!

Winter doesn’t have to be dreary and dreaded folks. It’s just one more opportunity mother nature gives us to express ourselves. So, get out there and don’t be afraid to be a different snowflake every day! If you’re a fan of expressing yourself by creating signature looks and then recreating them over and over – maybe, you should explore a career in cosmetology! To learn more about a career in cosmetology, check out some of the beauty schools in your area or contact your local state licensing board for a list of accredited schools. No matter what season it is, cosmetologists are out there making the rest of us look good and changing the world one hot hairstyle at a time!
