Dresses are probably the single most flattering piece a stylish petite woman can wear.  Because of its continuous patterns of fabrics, dresses have the ultimate lengthening effect and can create the illusion of height.  We suggest petite women to wear dresses as much as they can, regardless of the season.  What are the best dresses for short women?  This is the question every petite woman should ask and know the answer, but it is often overlooked.  Why?  Many of us short girls think finding the best pants and jeans is the hardest, but dresses not so much.  I hear you.  With pants and jeans, regular sizes normally do not fit petites.  With dresses, however, it might seem like we don’t have an issue with the inseam, so problem solved.  (Related article: What does Inseam Mean).  Is it, really?

The truth is, finding the best dresses for short women may not be easiest thing to do.  If you go to the regular size department, you may find what is supposed to be a mini dress might be over your knee, and a regular waisted dress might become drop waisted on you.  Because they are cut for women of average height (5’5″), the armpits might be too large for you, and the waistline may be too low for you.  Even if you go to the petite department, it could still be difficult to find something that flatters you.  Normally petite sizes are made according to stats of 5’3″ petite models, which means if you are 5 feet tall then they will not look good on you.  (Related article: What is Petite and The Truth about Petite Sizing)  Finding the right length is just the beginning of the challenge.  Finding the right style is getting to the core of the issue.  Sure, more and more brands realize petite sizes are an underserved market and have started to make petite sized clothing. However, most of them are really just a shorter version of their regular sizes.  The problem of that is they do not address our needs for elongating our petite frame.  Most petite women (I myself included) hope to look longer and taller through what we wear.  It is fine if they should be shorter than regular sizes, but that is not all.  (Related article: Do you Understand Petite Size Chart).  So, what are the best petite dresses for short women?

Kim Kardashian (5'3", Getty Images)

Fit and flare dresses (also known as a line dresses or skater dresses) are some of the best dresses for petite women.  If you are under 5’4″, the best length is 3-4 inches above your knees.  The silhouette is commonly flattering because it is form fitting in your upper body (exactly what we need as short girls) but it is also more forgiving for your lower body.  They do not hug the curve of your bottom, thus they will draw people’s attention away from your butt and thighs.  They are especially recommended for women who do not want people to focus on your lower body, such as the petite pear body type.

Petite Skater Dress

Wrap dresses are one of our favorite dresses for short women of all time.  Diane Von Fursternberg invented the legendary wrap dress in 1974, the design that made her a fashion icon at the age of 28.  Today, it is hard for us to imagine the times before wrap dress was invented.  Over 40 years have passed, we can still barely find another dress that is so versatile, convertible, workplace appropriate and great for day-to-night.  Like Victoria Beckham (5’3) mentioned in her latest fashion book “That Extra Inch”, wrap dress is one of the things that once you have, it is hard to understand how you have lived all those years without.  It hugs your body at all the right places and creates a continuous line of colors that elongates your body.  Wrap dresses are universally flattering, whether you are 4’11” or 5’4″.  They are the best choices for short girls who wish to emphasize their feminine curves (such as the petite hourglass shape) or those who wish to create the illusion of curves (such as petite rectangle shape).  If you are the no waistline body type, such as the petite apple shape or petite rectangle shape, the wrap will define your waistline.  For instance, Eva Longoria (5’2″, petite apple shape) wears wrap dresses a lot, and they make her waist look smaller.  In terms of length, you cannot go wrong with any of them, whether they are above your knee, at your knee or even maxi length.  For office meetings, a knee length wrap dress is always appropriate.  For date nights or cocktail hours, above the knee will make your legs look longer.  For vacation or resorts, a wrapped maxi dress looks classy and expensive.

The Belinda Petite Wrap Dress

If you want to take your petite fashion to the next level, look for details in petite dresses that will further flatter your particular body type.  (If you do not know your petite body type yet, take our quiz to find out).   Empire waist is a terrific design for us short girls.   The empire waist is a dress where the waist line is high, and sometimes it is placed just below the bust line.  Because it raises the waistline to above your natural waist, it effectively creates the illusion of shorter torso and longer legs.   This high waist line followed by the skirt of the dress will create a perfect illusion of length and will help to camouflage your midsection or bottom if that is your concern (if you are a petite woman with apple or pear shape).   For instance, petite apple shape women may be self conscious about their mid riff and do not want people to notice their stomach, the best dress for them is a petite skater dress with empire waist design.  The Juliana dress is a perfect example.  Because the waistline is elevated and the flare starts just a little under the bust line, it completely camouflages the stomach area.  See Grace from Color and Grace Blog (5’2″) wearing it, which perfectly hides any mid riff concerns.  Needless to say,  since the elevated waistline is above your natural waist, it makes your bottom half looks longer and optimizes your body ratio to the maximum.

Speaking of best dresses for short women, we must mention dresses with a belt is high on our list.  Why?  A belt can totally change the perceived ratio of your body.  The reason we call it “perceived” ratio is because we are all born with natural leg ratio and torso ratio (read about How to Understand your Vertical Body Type), but we can change that through what we wear.    Ever heard of rule of thirds and the golden mean ratio?  Our body ratio looks the best when it is divided by the thirds instead of halves or quarters.  That is a universal law applicable to all height, and it is especially critical to us short women.  We can totally use this rule to improve our body proportion and elongate our legs.  That is when a belt can come into play.  The key is to make sure the belt is positioned high enough to make your torso look shorter and your legs look longer.  Ideally, your torso should look like 1/3 of your body and your legs 2/3.  The best color of the belt is one to blend with your dress.  That way will avoid making your body look like cut in half while still adding subtle texture and interesting dimension to your outfit.  Dresses with a belt also help those of us lacking a defined waistline to have more waist definition, such as the petite rectangle shape or petite apple body type.

Don’t be surprised if we tell you maxi dresses are on our list of best dresses for short women.  Sure, most stylists advise us to go with short skirts, because that is the most logical way to make our legs to look longer.  That is true to some degree.  Wearing a skirt above or at the knee is one of the most obvious ways to lengthen our legs and look taller than we are.  However, wearing a long dress is another way of effectively extending our frame and thus could be very flattering to petite girls.  According to wiki, maxi dresses refer to informal dresses at ankle length.  So why would it look good on short girls?  The reason is creating length in our outfit is one of the key factors in styling short girls, which can be achieved through creating a column of colors. Because of its continuous color and pattern, maxi dress can effectively elongate your body frame to the maximum. Therefore, wearing maxi dress the right way will actually make a short girl look taller. In fact, maxi dress is one of the Top 6 Wardrobe Staples for Stylish Petite Women.  When it comes to petite celebrities, Nicole Richie (5’1″) is the queen of rocking maxi dresses.

Nicole Richie (5’1″, GettyImages)

Picking out the best maxi dresses for short women involves choosing the right length (as a starter), the right fabric and the right style.  Because how much it covers your body, it is critical to find the right pattern that will not make you look drowning in fabrics.  In general, smaller prints or solid colors are great for women under 5’4″ to avoid the look that the dress is wearing you.  Of course, there is no cut and dry answer to what is considered smaller print and what is not.  It is all relative, and the important thing is to keep them in scale to your body.  If you are petite and skinny, go with tiny prints.  On the other hand, if you are short and curvy, prints too small might make you look bulkier than you are.  Read our detail guide how to wear petite maxi dresses if you are short.

Dresses with vertical patterns or vertical designs are tried and true best dresses for short women as well.  Short women need to create length in what they wear in order to look longer and taller, and the most obvious way is to go with vertical patterns and designs.  Stripes are the easiest choice of vertical prints.  If you have a small body frame, going with something subtle is better than something loud and busy.

Victoria Beckham (5'3", GettyImages)

Since we are on the topic of best dresses for short women, we should also talk about what doesn’t work for petites.  The key is to create a continuously long and unbroken line of your outfit, and avoid horizontal lines.  In general, petite women should look for form fitting silhouette and stay away form bulky, busy and complicated designs.  Anything that is too loose or too puffy will probably make you look overwhelmed by the dress and that is what you should avoid wearing.  One topic that is often debated is if petite women can wear midi dresses.  The reason midi dresses hardly make it to our list of best dresses for short women is because the hem ends at your calves, which may make your legs look like cut in half.   While we have to say the length of midi dresses is the most challenging to pull off to short girls (a lot harder than either mini dresses or maxi dresses), it doesn’t necessarily mean you have to stay away from them altogether.  Midi dresses have been on trend in recent years and we have constantly seen them on petite celebrities and petite bloggers.  So, there is a way to make them work for short girls.  The trick is to pick out the right style for the midi dresses.  What works is midi dresses made from airy fabrics such as laces or those with side slits.   Lacey midi dresses will not make your legs look short because the fabrics are light and airy.  The slide slits are flattering to petite women because they show some skin of your legs, especially when you are walking or sitting down, which compromises the drawbacks of the midi dresses.  Read our guide on 5 Petite Style Rules and How to Break Them.

Emilia Clark (5'2", GettyImages)

Finding the best dresses for petite women is not easy, and a lot of times it depends on your personal preferences.  Petite women come in all different shapes and sizes, and there is hardly any set rules on something that absolutely will look good or bad on you.  Fashion is what each of us use to express our own individuality.

Best petite skirts if you are inverted triangle body type

-Skirts that flare slightly will generally balance out your top half and to call more attention to your lower body.  You should consider full and flaring skirts such as A-lines skirt, circle, balloon, etc. anything that flares around the hemline and create more curves around your hips.  A-line skirts will be perfect to add volume and bulk to your lower half.  Because they fill out your slight hips, they are a good choice to balance your upper body. Look for details around the hips or bold colors and prints to further enhance the effect.

-High waisted puff, full circle and tulip skirts shapes are great.  Full or ballerina type skirts add curves to your lower half and balance your broader, upper body.

-Pleats and patterns will also be good

-Add volume to your lower body with skirts with a lot of detail, such as panels, ruffles, pleats and other styles that will make your hips look broader and therefore more proportionate to the shoulders.

-Pencil skirts that drop straight from the waist instead of coming in towards the knee.  This is the signature look of Victoria Beckham.

We mentioned earlier your best assets are your beautiful legs.  You have amazing legs so feel free to play with skirt lengths.  As a petite woman, you should especially pay attention to the length of the skirt because when the hem of a skirt falls across a thick part of the leg, either thigh or calf, it makes you look wider and shorter. In most cases, the best skirt length for short women is 3-4 inches just above the knee. However, don’t go too short otherwise you will further a top-heavy look.

As mentioned earlier, in order to balance your bottom with your prominent shoulders, what you can do is to create volume in your bottom half.  A nipped-in waist and flared bottom will add curves to your hips. Pants with wide or flared legs are flattering to your figure, especially flared pants with a subtle flare at the hemline.  Because of your petite height, you don’t want the flare to be too exaggerated, which would widen you horizontally and make you look shorter.

Your narrow hips and legs are primed for all kinds of pants! Examples are gauchos, harem pants, cargo pockets etc. Boot cut, slightly flared, or trouser cut jeans are the most flattering on your figure.  If you are concerned about flat buttocks, whiskering at the hips and flap-pockets will add curves to your lower half.  Side pockets or flap-style back pockets also help balance your upper body. Cargo style pants are particularly flattering.

If you like the tightly fitted look, best petite jeans for you is straight or skinny jeans in light or bright color, which will balance your broad shoulders and add some femininity to your athletic body frame.  Olive color jeans has been the favorite choice of color for jeans by many Hollywood celebrities and models in recent years, because it is sexy, classic and chic.  Victoria Beckham (5’4″) has prominent broad shoulders and muscular build, a typical petite inverted triangle body type. Sarah Jessica Parker (5’3″) has broad shoulders, slender waist and very athletic build.  Because of her full chest and slender waist, Sarah Jessica Parker could be a combination of inverted triangle and petite hourglass (the skinny version).  They both love olive jeans, a very flattering jeans color for petite women with inverted triangle traits.

If you’re wearing skinnys or anything that is slim-fitted, make sure you wear something that minimizes your upper part a little bit (like a solid, dark colored sweater) on top and a pair of bright colored (or anything eye-catching) shoes to balance the look and add volume and width around your hips and down.  Bright-colored or eye catching shoes are suitable for our inverted triangle figure because they are sure to grab attention to your lean legs.  Paring a nice high heel pump with a shorter skirt, 3-4 inches above the knee is the perfect length for your petite height, which will show off your endless legs and make you look taller.

Every petite girl is curious about their petite body shape- are you a petite apple body shape? Or petite pear shape? Perhaps petite inverted triangle or rectangle? Or petite hourglass?  (If you do not already know yet, take our petite body type quiz to find out).  That is the most commonly known body type theory, which looks at petite body shape from the measurements of your shoulders, waist and hips in relation to one another.  Did you know there are also other aspects of our body that defines petite women’s body shape?  This is the concept of vertical body type.  Vertical body type essentially looks at where our waistline is and what is the proportion of our torso, legs and rise in relation to one another.  The questions we are trying to address is do you have short torso or long torso? Do you have high rise or regular rise?  Do you have relatively long legs (even though your overall height is under 5’4″)?  Some people are long-waisted and long in the rise. Some are short-waisted and short in the rise. There are all these different combinations to account for.  Understanding your vertical body shape will help you understand your proportion better, thus make better choices of petite clothing, especially in regards to bottoms, for example regular rise vs high rise petite jeans. Today, we will focus on an important concept about our vertical petite body shape which is often times less talked about, i.e. the rise.

You often hear that high rise petite jeans is most flattering to a short person.  But do you know what rise is?  When we talk about measurements of garments, rise is the distance from the middle of the crotch seam (right between your legs) to the top of the waistband. It usually ranges from 7 inches to 12 inches.  High rise petite jeans, for example, usually have 10 inches and above rise.  Now, in terms of your petite body shape, do you have long rise or regular rise?  Without getting too technical by using measuring tapes, here is how you can find out if you have long rise.

Ask yourself these questions:

Do the high rise petite jeans sit below or right around your belly button instead of above your belly button?

Do you feel uncomfortable wearing regular rise pants?

Even though petite women normally have shorter inseam than our taller friends, but do you feel like even petite size pants are too long for you and you really need extra short inseam?

If some or all of your answers to above questions is yes, you probably have long rise.

Photo: Joyofclothes.com

Now, it could also be the opposite.

Do almost all pants, regardless of “rise” hit you far above your belly button?

Even though you are short overall, do you find most petite pants’ inseam not long enough for you?

Do you often feel like even the petite size tops are too long for you?

If your answers are mostly yes to above questions, you probably have short rise.

Photo: Joyofclothes.com

If you are a petite girl with a long rise, your legs appear to be shorter proportionally (even compared with some of your petite friends), thus improving your vertical proportion is the key to flattering your petite body shape.  In order to balance out your long rise, dresses are your best friends.  When you wear a dress, people cannot tell where your crotch is, so there is no way to tell if your rise is long or not.  Dresses with empire waist does the best job to elevate your natural waistline.  Since our eyes assume anything under waistline is legs, that will create the illusion of longer legs for you.

By the same token, skirts, especially high waisted skirts, will help make your legs look longer and make you look taller without anyone noticing to your long rise.   In terms of tops, empire waist tops flatter your shorter waist and bypass your long rise.  Now, because of your petite height, we suggest you to pair a longer top with a shorter bottom (skirts are better choices for you than pants), and visually create the proportion of thirds, which is the most flattering proportion.

If you are shopping for pants, petite pants with regular (in other words) medium rise will probably not feel comfortable for you.   You will find that lower waisted pants will pull down when sitting and often feel uncomfortable, as well as showing off your underwear, which is not classy.  You could be short overall (5’3″), but the distance between your crotch and your waist is proportionally similar to that of a taller woman.  Even though the long rise by itself could enable you to sometimes to wear misses’ pants without the rise being too high, the inseams will still be too long and require hemming.  In that case, you should still shop in the petite department,  and the solution is get a pair of high rise petite jeans or pants which would be the best bet for you.

If you are a petite girl with a short rise, that normally means you need longer inseam.  That is great news because that means your legs look longer proportionally for your petite height, and you often appear to be taller than your actual height.  On the other hand, that might mean you have shorter torso.  Even though we all want to look taller and want our legs look longer, we still want to look balanced and don’t want our torso look disproportionally short.   You have many choices in terms of bottoms, but petite high rise jeans may not be the best for you, because it might make your torso look even shorter.  (Read our guide on How to Dress If You Are Petite and Have Short Torso).  Mid rise bottoms are better for your body shape.

For someone whose height is above 5’4″, is it possible that they need to wear petite size clothing?  Absolutely.  For instance, she could be short in the torso and disproportionately long in the rise. In that case they can’t wear regular misses’ tops but must always have to wear petites.

Are you petite and do you have pear figure?  If so, this article is for you to better understand your body type and find the best skirts and pants for you.

First of all, let’s take a close look at the characters of petite pear figure. See how many of below applies to you.

  • You shoulders and bust are narrower than your hips.
  • You have a well-defined waist, which may be smaller in proportion to your hips.
  • You have a slim torso and rib cage.
  • You have smaller upper body and larger hips and thighs.
  • You tend to carry extra weight in the hips and thighs while maintaining a smaller waist, arms, shoulders, and chest.
  • You may have thick calves and puffy knees. Water retention is one of the most obvious reason for puffy knees
  • If you look at the measurements, your waist is at least 75% of the chest, and your hips are at least 110% of the chest.  A waist to hip ratio of less than 0.8 makes you a pear shape.

How many of the above facts are you?  If your answer is more than half, then you probably have a petite pear figure. If you are still not sure, take our petite body type quiz to find out.

If you are a petite pear shape, you may have narrow sloping shoulders.  You hip and thighs are the most prominent areas of your body.  When you gain weight, it tends to show up around your thighs and hips and then on your arms and breasts.  Your biggest assets are your slim waist, and maybe even have killer abs.    You are smaller on top, and larger on the bottom. Overall, you come across as having heavy bottoms and smaller upper body.  Among the famous petite celebrities, Shakira (5’2″) , Kim Kardashian (5’3″) and Rachel Bilson (5’2″) have typical pear figure.

Rachael Bilson (5’2″) Photo: Reddit

In one word, pear figure is “bottom heavy”, so the key is to balance the narrow neck and sloping shoulders with the wider hips and thighs. That can be achieved through enhancing and adding volume (or the illusion of volume) to your upper body while emphasizing your waist and de-emphasizing your lower body to create a balanced, hourglass appearance.  (Read our guide on Best Swimwear for Petite Pear Body Shape, Best Wedding Dresses for Petite Brides of Pear Body Type).  The easiest option to have a slimmer bottom half is to invest in a few pieces of high quality hip and thigh hugging shapewear.

Petite women with pear figure should look for petite skirts and pants that draw attention away from the lower half and up towards the chest.  You want the eye to skim over your bottom half and not attract attention there.  You look great in A-line and flared skirts which will skim hips and thighs.  Wearing solid, dark colors on the bottom is always a good choice for our pear figure beauties.

High waisted skirts are also great because they highlight your small waist, and dark colours are better because they can make your thigh area look slimmer.

Petite women of pear figure can wear all kinds of pants and jeans. (Read our guide on Best Petite Jeans For Your Body Type). Straight, bootleg, wide leg pants and jeans create a vertical fluid and not to mention flattering lean vertical line on your shape. A great option when you want to offset your killer curves.  If you want to draw the attention from how big your thighs and bum are, wear loose fitting tops with slim fitting pants or jeans.  One of the best jeans for pear figure is boot cut stretch jeans.  Many petite women with pear figure are concerned about their full thighs.  If that is your case, you should try flared and boot-cut jeans.  Flared jeans creates extra volume below the knee, thus they will help balance you out.

If you find it challenging to find a pair of jeans that doesn’t gape in the waist, a high waist jeans can solve the problem because the fabric is designed to cover more than just your backside.  Since pear shape women have prominent hips, you may want to avoid too much embellishments on the butt or pockets with flaps.  Those details will only make your butt appear larger.  On the other hand,  smaller or angled pockets has the opposite effect of making your butt look smaller (of course only if you so prefer).

What to avoid:

Some say pear shape should avoid tightly fitted skirts and pants.  However, at Petite Dressing we believe petite women of each body shape have their own unique beauty and it is your personal choice what you view as your assets and want to accentuate.  Whether or not you should wear very tightly fitted pencil skirts really depends on if you want to flounce your curvy bottom half or not.  If you want to camouflage it, then stay away from body con skirts, as they might make your hips and thighs more prominent.  That said, you probably notice Kim Kardashian is constantly seen in high waisted tight skirts, which is one of her signature looks.  So, it really is up to you how what you would like to emphasize.  If the Kim Kardashian like curvy look is what you are going for, you can experiment with skinny jeans and fitted pencil skirt. These will surely enhance your lower body. To balance it out, the best way to wear skinnys for your body shape, is to add weight on your upper body with a pea shape jacket or a cropped jacket.

Kim Kardashian (5’3″) Photo: Outfitidentifier

Horizontal line prints and bold patterns will just add volume to the hips- not only they are not flattering to petite women in general, they are also not the best choices for your pear body shape.  For women under 5’4″, vertical prints and patterns are always more flattering because they lengthens your legs and make you appear taller.  In your case, you should opt for dark color vertical prints, as they also make your prominent bottom half less noticeable.

Are you petite and do you have apple figure?  If so, this article is for you to better understand your body type and find the best skirts and pants for you.

First of all, let’s take a close look at the characters of apple figure. See how many of below applies to you.

  • You have a full chest, upper back with no or little waist definition.
  • You shoulders are about as wide as your hips.
  • You’re top heavy, and smaller from the waist down.
  • Your bust and mid-riff might appear bigger than your hips.
  • You do not have a defined waistline.
  • Your hips and buttock might be wide and full along with your waist
  • Overall you come across as fleshy instead of bony.
  • When you gain weight the fat gets easily stored around your upper half — especially around your midsection.
  • A waist to hip ratio of greater than 0.8 means you’re an apple.

How many of the above facts are you?  If your answer is more than half, then you probably have a petite apple figure. If you are still not sure, take our petite body type quiz to find out.

If you are a petite apple body shape, you are generally well-proportioned. Your silhouette is round usually due to overweight or childbirth.  Fat is mainly distributed in the abdomen, chest, and face.  You tend to gain weight around your mid section, which to most apple shaped women is the area that they want to camouflage.  Apple shape tend to have slender arms and legs, which are your assets you want to emphasize.  Amongst the petite celebrities in Hollywood, Eva Longoria has a typical apple shape.

Apple figure and hourglass figure are very similar in terms of having the feminine curves (full bust and full hips) and a well proportioned body.  The main difference for our apple figure is that they do not have a defined waist.  Therefore, the goal of your styling should be to create the illusion of waist and make your mid section look less obvious.  (Read How to Dress Petite Apple Shape, Best Swimwear for Petite Apple Body Shape, Best Wedding Dresses for Petite Apple Shape).  One easy way to create a trimmer waist is to wear high quality spanx shapewear,  which will instantly trim down your upper body. Waist cinchers or body shapers that slim down your mid section are your best bets.

The petite apple shaped beauties have lean legs, which are your assets that can be best shown off by wearing dresses or skirts. Since you lack waist definition,  the best petite skirts for you are those that can create the illusion of a waistline or draw people’s attention away from your mid section.  Length wise, you should show off your thin legs in a classic mini skirt.

One of the best petite skirts to our apple shapes is structured skirts,  which are flattering to a smaller bottom-half. Your skirt should skim your body rather than cling to it; clingy skirt styles can highlight the different proportions of your upper- and lower-body. Pair your structured skirt with a wrap-style top to lend definition to your middle. If you’re an apple, you look fantastic in high-waisted flouncy skirts.  The waistband will hit at the smallest part of the torso and flare out over the stomach, masking the mid-section. Lastly, the short hemline will show off your slender legs.

To distract people’s attention from your midriff, you can choose skirts that have their zippers at the side instead of in the middle to highlight your belly.

If you opt for a pencil skirt for more formal situations, a structured pencil skirts work well to deemphasize your mid section, but keep them at slightly above knee length. Make sure to add the focus to the top with the tips above.  We basically want to make your mid-section looking narrower by adding volume and width to your hips with a patterned pencil skirt or floral patterns that add more width to your hips and legs.

Because of your petite figure, you should also focus on elongating your waist. It will help make your waist look longer and leaner by wearing solid, dark colors around your waistline, especially black, dark blue navy, dark brown and dark grey which goes with almost any colors.

Many apple shaped petite women have their biggest concern about their midsection.  If that is the case for you, the best petite jeans for your body type is high-rise, stretch denim or boot-cut style  that covers and smooths at the same time.  (Read more about Best Petite Jeans for Your Body Type) Since petite apple shaped woman has little or no waist definition, many stylists advise against tucking in as it might make it more obvious that you do not have a waist.  However, every fashion rule can be broken, if you know how to work around it.  If you are wearing dark wash high waisted flare jeans, which has a sliming effect around your waistline, it works just fine if you tuck your shirt in.   If you happen to have muffin top, you should avoid low-rise jeans, as  that will have you spilling all over the place.  You may even find high-waisted jeans not able to hide the muffin top enough.  In that case, the best style to hide that is mid-rise black jeans.  They will suck it all in where you want it and look flattering on you.

Pleated pants will only add inches to your waist.  Likewise, make sure that any pleats of skirts start below the belly to avoid adding extra volume.

Pants that taper in towards your ankle should be avoided as they only make your top half look larger.

Petite women with apple figure are best advised to pair skirts or pants with heels whenever possible, which will extend your bottom half and elongate your petite frame.  When you create a long line in your body through styling, that will improve your overall round silhouette.  If you are wearing pants, make sure to wear pants long enough to cover part of your heels.  Avoid ankle length wide leg pants, which is generally not recommended to petite women and especially not flattering to apple figure because of its widening effect.

Are you petite and do you have rectangle figure?  If so, this article is for you to better understand your body type and find the best skirts and pants for you.

First of all, let’s take a close look at the characters of rectangle figure. See how many of below applies to you.

Your bust and shoulders are about the same width as your hip-line.

You have a small bust size.

You have little waist definition.

You’ve got a small frame in general, with little or no curves.

You might look shorter and heavier than you really are.

You usually are an athlete.

How many of the above facts are you?  If your answer is more than half, then you probably have a petite rectangle figure. If you are still not sure, take our petite body type quiz to find out.

If you are a petite rectangle body shape, your curves are evenly proportioned.  One of the positive thing on being a rectangle shape is that you gain weight everywhere and lose it everywhere.  Overall, you may come across as “straight up and down” or “boyish” type of body, which lacks curves.  You may have noticed that you do not have an obvious waistline, and that does not necessarily mean you need to lose a lot of weight.  In fact,  slim/athletic rectangular figure have small bone structures, with lower than average body fat percentage.  Therefore, petite women with rectangle figure normally do not need to lose weight.  Even if you do lose some weight, you probably still will not see much curves around your waist either.  It is because of your wide waist you might appear heavier on top than you really are and even if your stomach is flat.  In addition, a rectangle body shape can come with wide shoulders and chunky calves, which means you can look fairly athletic or masculine.

Natalie Portman (5’3″)

Rectangles are the classic model shape – straight up and down with slim hips, small bum and bust and not much in the way of a waist.   Amongst the petite actresses in Hollywood, the most famous petite rectangle body shaped celebrities are Reese Witherspoon, Natalie Portman and Hilary Duff.  If you are already petite, with the rectangle figure, you might look shorter and/or heavier than you really are.  If you aren’t very curvy (most rectangle figures aren’t), your focus should be to create curves (in the right places).  Your main goal should be to create a waist on your figure and add more width to your upper and lower part – transforming your body into a proportionate hourglass shape. You should accentuate your best features- the overall athletic figure is your valuable assets! Emphasize a pair of lean legs and toned shoulders.  For our petite rectangle body shaped beauties, of course you should also aim to look taller and make your proportion look better, in addition to creating curves in your figure. (Read more about the Best Wedding Dresses for Petite Rectangle Shape and Best Swimwear for Petite Rectangle Body Type)

The beauty of having a rectangle figure is your wide selection of pants and skirt.

Focus on girly & flirty skirts that will give you a feminine shape.  Avoid too full or fluffy skirts as they can make you bottom-heavy and create unbalance to your rectangle body shape.

Try A-line styled skirts, especially those with self-belts that you can cinch to create waistline definition or skirts constructed in panels with princess seaming that curves outward from the waistband and inward at the hem to mimic a shapely hip.

Adding dimensions to your frame will also create the illusion of curves for your straight up and down shape. This means “breaking up” your silhouette to create curves.  Details in skirts will give you the feminine look needed by your boyish figure.  Such details include full circle cut,  tiers as well as ruching and gathering.  Any trim that has flounce or ruffle is fantabulous, and try to keep the skirt’s overall shape close to the body. This way the skirt doesn’t overwhelm your trim little body.

Prints are great for petite rectangle beauties.  Reese Witherspoon is the expert of using prints to flatter her petite figure, and it is fair to say prints are her signature looks.

Reese Witherspoon (5’2″, Photo: Elle)

Since you have straight up and down figure already, generally we do not recommend a plain straight pencil skirts to you.  That doesn’t mean you should completely stay away from pencil skirts.  Pencil skirts that are stitched down at the side seams add curves, which could be a good choice for you.  Another way to create the illusion of a curvier figure is to peg your pencil skirts. Find a good tailor who can make this easy adjustment by narrowing the skirt at the hem.  Make sure the adjustment is done at the right length, otherwise you may not be able to walk in your skirt because it could be too tight at the hem! If you are petite and slender, pegged skirt works best for you.  If you’re a full-figured short woman, you may want to pass on this skirt style because it will emphasize hips.

If you have rectangular figure, you probably have amazing legs. Your athletic build allows you to wear boyish clothes as well as a wide range of feminine styles, so you have many choices when it comes to jeans. (Read Best Petite Jeans for Your Body Type)

Most rectangle figured women tend to have flat buttocks. You can almost wear all types of pants especially flared leg because the flare hem which make it look like you have hips.

Boyfriend jeans might look good on you, given your athletic frame.  However, for petite women, we generally do not recommend boyfriend jeans that is too loose or too big, as that will overwhelm your small body frame.  On the other hand, if you prefer more feminine style, for instance, you want your buttocks to look less flat, then the best petite jeans for you are those with pocket details.  Pockets with flaps will add extra volume and  will make your butt look less flat.  Slit pockets also help to give you more curves back.

We talked about the lack of waist definition for the rectangular figure- and the most obvious way to address that is to use a belt to create the illusion of waist.  You can either wear a dark colored belt around your waist or place a waist cinching shapewear underneath your clothes.

Petite women come in all shapes and sizes.  Some of us have defined waistline, and some of us don’t.  If you are the no waistline figure, it could be many reasons.  It doesn’t necessarily mean you need to lose a lot of weight.  In fact, some body types tend to gain weight around waist even if they gain only a tiny bit of weight.  Meanwhile, for the no waistline figure, even if you have lost a ton of weight, your waistline still may not show.  The most common no waistline figure is the petite apple shape and petite rectangle shape.  (If you don’t know what you are, take our quiz to find out your petite body type.)  The famous petite celebrities who do not have a defined waistline includes Reese Witherspoon (rectangle shape) and Eva Longoria (apple shape).

Reese Witherspoon (5’2″)If you want to create the waistline, the most obvious choice is to use the belt.  When picking out a belt, scale is the most important thing when deciding if it is right for your petite height.  Most petite women have shorter torso, in other words, short waisted.  Therefore, a wide belt will take up the entirety of your torso and make your waist look even shorter.  So, avoid super wide belt, unless you want to look like a chest on top of hips.  Women of petite height in general look better with skinny belts, which is in proportion with petite body frame.  If you happen to be petite but have long waist, then skinny belts may look a bit too small and you should go with wider belts.  1.5 inch belts work well on most petite women.  So, should short women completely forget about wide belts?  Not necessarily.  Nothing is absolute when it comes to fashion rules.  We have seen petite celebrities (Mira Duma, 5 feet, is a perfect example) wearing wide belts creatively and look stylish and chic.  Therefore, if you are petite height but a die hard fan of wide belts (like myself),  there are still ways to wear them without looking overwhelmed by the belts.  The key is to wear them in a monochromatic color as your outfit, or at least your top.  That way, the focal point will not be purely on your wide belt, while at the same time adding interesting dimension to your outfit.  (Read more about 7 Ways to Style Accessories for Girls of Petite Height).

Empire waist

If you are petite and happen to be the no waistline figure, this is the classic design that will create instant waist definition. Empire waist tops are nipped in just below the bust line – the smallest point on the torso – and will give the illusion of a defined waistline.  According to Wiki, Empire silhouette, Empire line, Empire waist or just Empire is a style in clothing in which the dress has a fitted bodice ending just below the bust, giving a high-waisted appearance, and a gathered skirt which is long and loosely fitting but skims the body rather than being supported by voluminous petticoats. The outline is especially flattering to those wishing to disguise the stomach area or emphasize the bust. The shape of the dress also helps to lengthen the body’s appearance.

Corset or bustier tops

It may seem old-fashioned, but many women enjoy wearing a corset. They love how small their waist looks and the sleek silhouette provided.  On the other hand, a bustier is a more modern style. It’s helpful to think of it as a fancy-bra-meets-shapewear. It’ll make your chest look more “uplifted,” while it smooths and flattens your midriff.

If you wish to make your mid section look smaller and define your waist, nothing does a better job than a corset or bustier.  A corset top reinforced with boning in a more rigid fabric will also knock a few inches of your midsection and give you added cleavage to boot. The ehanced bustline will accentuate the contrast with your waist and create the illusion of waistline.

Belted jacket or structured blazer

Choose a blazer that’s fitted at the waist to instantly create a narrow looking middle. Consider light shoulder pads to broaden narrow shoulders. Find belted coats and jackets to create curves in all the right places.  For petite women, the key is to make sure the belt is actually above your natural waistline (even though you do not have an obvious waist, you can still find the narrowest point of your torso which is your waistline).  By elevating the waistline, a belt can instantly change your body proportion, in addition to making your waist look smaller.

Fit and flare dress (skater dress)

If your body lacks waist definition, wearing a fit and flare dress (also called skater dress) will do a fantastic job to create that wanted waistline.  The design of the dress is fitted at your torso but flares out under your waist, which visually look your waist looks smaller and trick the eyes into believing you have a smaller waistline.

A line skirt

Skirts that hit just 4 inches or so above the knee are the best length for petite women to create a well-proportioned silhouette. Since A-line skirts are fitted at the hip and flare out slightly toward the hem, they accentuate the contrast and enhance the look of waistline- so they should be the top choices to create a more balanced proportion.

Off the shoulder

Off the shoulder has been a lasting fashion trend for years, because it is universally flattering.  In fact, it has proven to be a wardrobe classic instead of a fad.  The on-going trend of off the shoulder tops and dresses is one of the best news for short girl fashion. Why?  Because it draws people’s attention above and focus on your face.  If you want certain part of your body to look longer, you should create space around it (i.e. show some skin). That explains why off the shoulder style is so flattering to petite women.  Since most petite women have shorter necks and shorter torso, wearing off the shoulder tops will effectively make their neck look longer and their short torso less noticeable.  Another benefit of off the shoulder design is it makes your face looks slimmer.  Did you notice that? Everyone likes to look more slender regardless their height!  So, if you don’t have an off-the-shoulder dress or top in your closet yet, go ahead and grab one!

High waisted style

The come back of the high-waisted style is one of the best trends in the petite fashion world in recent years.  They are not the loose fit “Mom jeans” of the 70s or 80s, instead, they are chic, sexy and functional as seen on petite celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Victoria Beckham and Eva Longoria.  (Read 10 Short Celebrities with Amazing Style). In fact, high-waisted style is a must have staple of petite fashion wardrobe.  It effectively elevates your waistline, thus elongate your bottom half and make your legs look longer instantly.  Are you familiar with the Golden Mean ratio?  If you have heard about it in math, architecture and other context, you should also understand its application in short girl fashion.  Our goal is to create the best proportion of your body through our styling, a ratio that is closest to Golden Mean and most pleasing to the eyes.  High rise style can effectively make your body look more proportionate by making the torso look shorter and thus tricking the eyes into believing your legs are longer.  Both high rise skirts and pants work wonders in petite fashion.  Did we mention wearing high-waisted style helps to disguise muffin top, which is the concern for many apple shaped petite women?  And of course, you do not ever have to worry you are bending too much  and showing your under panties in high rise pants.

Crop top

The crop top has become so popular in recent years that you see it worn by almost every fashion blogger.  The good news?  It is the secret weapon of short girl fashion! It goes hand in hand with the trend of high waisted bottoms.  As a petite girl, you probably would like to make your legs look longer.   (Read Best Tips on How to Look Taller.) Whether you pair it with high waisted skirts, shorts or jeans, crop top has the super power of making petite girls’ legs look much longer than they are.  The reason is the shortened design of a cropped top can elongate your bottom half and instantly make you look taller.  If you want to double the elongating effect, wear underneath darker prints, as continues color patterns give the eye the illusion of longer lines.

Maxi dresses

Bohemian trend has been many people’s favorite in recent years, and maxi dress is one of its signature looks.  Did you know maxi dress could be very flattering to shorter girls, if you know how to wear it?  Sure, most stylists advise us to go with short dresses, if we want our legs to look longer.  That is true to some degree.  Wearing a dress above or at the knee is one of the most obvious ways to lengthen our legs and look taller than we are. Because of its continuous color and pattern, maxi dress can effectively elongate your body frame. Therefore, wearing maxi dress the right way will actually make a short girl look taller. In fact, maxi dress is one of the Top 6 Wardrobe Staples for Stylish Petite Women.  (Read our tips on How to Wear Petite Maxi Dresses if You are Short).  When it comes to petite celebrities, Nicole Richie (5’1″) is the queen of rocking maxi dresses!

When we talk about short girl style, we need to look at the good and bad of the fashion trends.  We all live in the world where we are bombarded with information about fashion trends from numerous media such as magazines, TV, facebook, Instagram, and even subway and taxi advertisements.  Whether you admit it or not, you are under their influence.  After you see them and hear them enough times, their impact on you could be happening in your subconscious mind without you even realizing it.  You may be convinced to accept their definition and standard of what looks good and what doesn’t and what is in and what should be out this season.  Hollywood stars, super models, million-follower bloggers such as Kendal Jenner, Gigi Hadid, Rhianna, Olivia Palermo and so on and so forth. are the so called trend setters, and you might be listening to them and mimicking them without even realizing it.  But, wait a second, did you realize most of these trend setters are 5’8″ and above?

Gigi Hadid (Photo: Harper’s Bazar)

What happens to short girls style?  Everybody knows what looks fabulous on models with gazelle like legs could be a total disaster on a petite woman who is 5’2″.  If you are petite, your styling focus should be to create the illusion of height and length through what you wear, which is never an issue with those super models and probably never a focus for them.  What really works for a short girl style should be carefully designed with the goal of optimizing the body proportion in mind.  Once you find those styles that flatter you, they should become your wardrobe staples that you should always go back to despite the current trends of this season set by the tall girls.  Today, let’s take a look at the trends that are not the best choices for petite women.

Gladiator sandals

Gladiator sandals have been extremely popular in recent years, thanks to all the celebrities and fashion bloggers in the wake of the block buster Hollywood movies. Although they can look very trendy and fashionable, they are not flattering to girls with short legs.  If you are petite, any horizontal straps will make your legs look cut off, let alone gladiator sandals with numerous straps.   The worst for short girl style is the tall gladiator sandals which look are normally the height of tall boots but they have straps all over.  They will make your legs a lot shorter than they are.  The best shoes for short girl style include nude pumps, shoes with pointy toes and heels with low vamps.  (Read our guide on “The Best and Worst Shoes for Petite Feet.”)

Midi skirts

For those of you not familiar with the term, “midi” is a dress or skirt length that is halfway between the knee and ankle (mid-calf). The hem is at an awkward length and they make your legs look cut off, because they also draw attention to the widest part of your lower legs and make your legs look shorter. Midi skirts are not the most flattering style to girls with short legs.  For short girl style, you are much better off with skirts either longer or shorter than the midi length, i.e. a mini skirt that ends 4 inches above your knees or a full length maxi skirt that covers your ankles.  Either way you will look taller than you are and your proportion will look a lot better. (Read How Can A Short Woman Rock Maxi Skirts)

Baggy boyfriend jeans

Short girls should in general go for figure-conscious clothing and stay away from baggy clothes, especially the bottoms.  There has been an increasing buzz about boyfriend jeans in recent years, as they are comfortable to wear because of the relaxed fit.  However, they are not flattering for short girl style, if the fit is too relaxed.  It is important for petite women to wear well-fitted bottoms, which will effectively elongate the legs and make your overall proportion look better.  If you think skinny jeans is only flattering for certain body types, go for bootcut jeans, which is universally flattering for any body type. It is not as tight as straight leg jeans or skinny jeans, so it is very forgiving. In addition, the straight A line at the bottom makes your calves and thighs look skinner. Flared jeans is another most flattering styles for women.  The flare adds a graceful, curved silhouette which are very feminine.  For short girls, the flare legs adds length to by extending your legs, as they do not stop at your ankle like skinny jeans.  For a complete guide of how to pick the best jeans, click to read “Best Petite Jeans for Your Body Type”.

Cropped palazzo pants

Wide leg pants have been gaining some ground in the fashion scene in the last seasons, however, they are better suited for tall or average height ladies.  If you are short, wearing wide leg pants is not flattering in general.  The width in the legs goes horizontal, and that makes you look shorter than you actually are.  If wide leg pants is your thing, make sure you pick out a pair that is long enough.  Avoid cropped wide leg pants by all means, as they are hardly flattering to short girls no matter how you wear them.  For short girl style, palazzo pants should never be at your calf or ankle, which will be the most unflattering length.  Carefully choose a vertically inspired pattern and make sure to wear them with slim heels to make up for the vertical line much needed by short girls.  Read our guide on “How to Wear Petite Palazzo pants if You are Short”.

Wide belts

Wide belts have been the signature looks for many high fashion brands in recent years.  It is not hard to understand why they are getting the attention from every one because they are sexy, cool and edgy.  Even though I myself absolutely love wide belted looks, I have to admit they are not the best trends for short girl style. Since most petite women have shorter torso, it is easy for them to look overwhelmed by the wide belts.  The worst thing is to wear a wide belt at the waist, which would visually cut your body into halves and that is absolutely not flattering!.  If you are petite height but a die hard fan of wide belts (like myself),  there are still ways to wear them without looking overwhelmed by the belts.  The key is to wear them in a monochromatic color as your outfit, or at least your top.  That way, the focal point will not be purely on your wide belt, while at the same time adding interesting dimension to your outfit.  Read our guide on “How to Smartly Style your Accessories if you are Petite Height“.

Giant statement necklaces

Despite the current trend of wearing a bold and chunky statement necklace, they are not the best choice for short girl style.  Petite women can look overwhelmed by a giant necklace, unless you are petite and plus size.  If you are petite and curvy, then a delicate chain may look lost on you and you are better off with a medium sized necklace (still, it should not overwhelm your petite height).  If you love the bib-shaped statement necklaces, which is trending right now, opt for one designed to hit lower on your frame which has a medium to small airy design.  Always avoid enormous statement necklaces that sit high on your clavicle.
