A crop top plus a high waisted skirt or a pair of high rise jeans is an effortless look that every petite girl can pull off with their existing wardrobe. This simple look doesn’t take too much styling, but it is very flattering to petite woman. The crop top makes your torso look shorter, and the high waisted bottom effectively elongates your legs, thus the combination doubles the power to make you look taller. This look is very versatile and can be worn at any occasion. A cropped off the shoulder top plus a high waisted skirt is a perfect look for a date night, but it can also be a very causal look for the beach or resort, or even just for running errands around town. Even if you are just going to the gym or the grocery store on weekends, throw on a cropped shirt plus a high waisted jeans will make an easy outfit but also make you feel chic. This petite style is constantly seen on short actresses especially Kim Kardashian. Whether or not you like her reality TV show, Kim Kardashian is on our list of best dressed short actresses because she always pulls the most chic petite style looks whether she is on the red carpet, walking out of a grocery market or holding her baby on the street.

2. Maxi dress
The Bohemian style has been such a darling of fashion for many years, and there is no sign that it will fade off any time soon. One of the signature looks is maxi dresses, especially floral maxi dresses. In the summer time when you are hanging on the beach or by the pool, nothing seems to be better than a flowy and sexy maxi dress. When you are packing for vacation at a resort, maxi dresses are the no brainer as they are so light and easy to care for. Sure, most stylists advise us to go with short skirts, if we want our legs to look longer. That is true to some degree. Wearing a short dress above or at the knee is one of the most obvious ways to lengthen our legs and look taller than we are. However, wearing a long dress is another way of effectively extending our frame and thus could be very flattering to petite girls. The reason is creating length in our outfit is one of the key factors in styling short girls, which can be achieved through creating a column of colors. Because of its continuous color and pattern, maxi dress can effectively elongate your body frame. Therefore, wearing maxi dress the right way will actually make a short girl look taller. We have seen this look on many short actresses, especially in resort pictures. Nicole Richie is the master of Bohemian style of all short actresses, and she sets a perfect example of how petite women can totally rock this look.

3. Short print dress
A short dress is a timeless classic in petite women’s wardrobe. How to pick the print that will flatter the petite body frame remains an art and a skill. While some say that petite women should only wear small prints, others have tried it out and proved that rules can be broken. We do believe you should try any print you love, but the key is it should be proportional to your body frame. The general guidance is the print should not be bigger than the fist, if you are petite. Since petite women have smaller body frame, you want to make sure you do not look swamped by the prints. Of all the short actresses, Reese Witherspoon is the master of this style. In one interview, this southern girl from Georgia mentioned black is only for funerals where she grew up, thus wearing colorful clothing is the most natural thing for her to do. Her love of print dresses is also manifested by her own clothing brand Draper James, which has plenty of preppy southern style short dresses with pretty prints. Read more on How to Wear Prints Learned from Reese Witherspoon.
4. Fitted crop jacket + shorts
A well fitted jacket hitting a couple of inches below your natural waistline is the most flattering outwear for petite women. Paired with short shorts, this petite style look will make your proportion look better and legs look longer. Eva Longoria is one of the best dressed short actresses to pull this look and sets a perfect example of how to effectively use the length of jackets and shorts to optimize the proportion of petite body frame. If you want your legs to look longer, you should wear ¾ sleeves. If you have very short legs, wear ½ sleeves. You could also apply the rule of monochromatic dressing by wearing similar color of jacket and shorts- they do not have to be the same exact color, but monochromatic means are from the same hue but just of different shades.
5. Fitted long pants+ stiletto
Well fitted long pants can effectively elongate the petite body frame and make your legs look longer. Pairing them with slender high heels will double that effect of lengthening. The most flattering pants style is high waisted pants, which raise focus point to above your natural waist line and create the illusion of height. As a style icon of the short actresses, Victoria Beckham has rocked many different stunning looks and her style is simple and sleek. One of her signature looks is wearing long pants with stiletto.
6. Skinny Jeans+ OTK boots
This is one of our favorite looks on short actresses especially in the winter times. Over the knee boots is the best pal of skinny jeans when the weather gets cold. This look is super flattering to petite women as the over the knee design just officially adds several inches to your legs. The OTK boots can be low or medium heels, and still achieve the lengthening and elongating result. If you want the maximum benefit of the OTK boots, go with pointed toe style high heel OTK. Standing under 5 feet, Mira Duma has rocked this petite style in many different occasions.
Jumpsuit has been so trendy in recent years that you see it everywhere. Jessica Alba was wearing a black wool Emilio Pucci jumpsuit, Miranda Kerr was in a floral print jumpsuit, and Kate Hudson was in Roland Mouret jumpsuit… You name it. It seems like overnight jumpsuit had become the go to outfit for Hollywood A listers, and they are worn in cocktail parties, at charity events and even on the red carpet. That is how versatile jumpsuits are- they fit almost any occasion, and, if worn by the right person in the right way, they could give you that edgy and stylish look that no other clothing can. They are also made from a wide range of fabrics such as silk, polyester as well as wool, so they can be worn in any season. What about petite jumpsuit? While jumpsuits all of the a sudden became the “it” outfit for everyone else, it is not the easiest outfit to pull off, especially by petite women. We have seen a few of petite celebrities such as Mira Duma (5′), Kim Kardashian (5’3”) and Scarlett Johansson (5’3”) wearing petite jumpsuit, so that means it is possible for petite women to pull it off. If worn correctly, jumpsuit can really elongate the petite body frame and be one of the most flattering pieces in your wardrobe. For example, can you tell Mira Duma is only 5 feet tall in the picture below? If you are interested in trying the look, be sure to follow these tips when picking out petite jumpsuit.

1 Get a PETITE jumpsuit
First things first, you should get a petite jumpsuit. This may sound obvious, but I will explain to you why getting the jumpsuit in petite size is so important in a minute. (Read more about What is Petite and petite sizing.) Jumpsuit is a combination of a top and a pair of pants. For petite women, some of us are quite used to purchasing a pair of regular size pants, and then take them to the tailors for hemming. While that might work for pants, it may not work for jumpsuits. The reason is just cutting off the hem may not convert a regular size to a petite jumpsuit. Because jumpsuit has a top as well, there is too many other things to alter in order for it to fit your petite body frame. Therefore, it is a good idea to get jumpsuits from petite stores or petite designers. While there are not too many choices of ready made petite jumpsuits compared with regular sizes, they do exist. You can find some cute designs of petite jumpsuits at ASOS, Topshop and Nordstrom.
2. Wear fitted jumpsuit
Petite jumpsuit needs to be well fitted in order to give you that long and lean silhouette. Like any other clothing, if they are oversized, they will not look good on petite women. In this case, even worse, because they would be unflattering from head to toe and they could make you look like walking in a slouchy prisoner’s uniform. Some petite jumpsuits at ASOS look well tailored, while they may not be very expensive.
3.Pick the right colors and prints
Okay, when it comes to petite jumpsuits, picking the right color is critical. Because jumpsuits cover such a large portion of your body, the most flattering is solids, especially darker color. Wearing solid color petite jumpsuit will create the long column of colors and create the illusion of height, which is ultra flattering to petite women. Darker solids such as black, navy or wine color can also make you look more slender. We are not saying you should stay away from prints, but they do run the risk of overwhelming your small frame. Vertical stripes and any other vertical patterns are flattering to petite women. If you love floral jumpsuit, make sure the prints are proportional to your body. Be very careful about big prints or prints that look very exaggerated- most likely they are not suitable for petite women. Remember, you can also wear jumpsuits with different colors for the top and bottoms. Always opt for darker color bottoms, as those petite jumpsuits will make you look longer and leaner.
4.The rise is key
Here is the thing about petite jumpsuit- the rise can make or break you. The proportions of the jumpsuit is so important that whether or not it will fit you could depend on it. The reason is simple- if the rise is too short, you simply won’t be able to get it on! On the other hand, if the rise is too long, then they will make the waistline fall under your natural waistline, which is the opposite of what we want and look extremely unflattering for petite women. As a petite woman, the last thing you want is to make your legs shorter than they actually are. Therefore, finding the perfect rise is the most important part of searching for the perfect petite jumpsuit.

5.Low V neck or off the shoulder looks great on petites
There are so many different choices for the tops of petite jumpsuits that you should try on different style and find out what suits you the best. In general, deep v neck is flattering to petite women, because they elongate your neck and make you look taller. Likewise, off the shoulder design is universally flattering in petite fashion, because it makes your arms look longer and even your proportion look better. The same applies to jumpsuits. Opt for a well fitted jumpsuits with a low neck line or bare shoulders.
6. Try on as many as you can
We talked about how tricky the rise is and how important it needs to be well fitted for petite women. Finding the right petite jumpsuit is not easy, and it may take a while and many trials for you to find that perfect pair. Even when it comes to petite jumpsuits at petite section, just that they look great on a 5’3” model doesn’t necessarily mean they will look just as good on you. The reason is jumpsuits very much rely on the person’s body type. For example, petite women in general have shorter torso, but there are also petites with a longer waist. In those cases, where the rise should be totally depends on the individual, and the only reason to find out if they fit you or not is to try it. Remember, all jumpsuits are not created equally. If you try on a couple of petite jumpsuits but no luck, don’t get frustrated and decide right away that this look is not for me. That simply means it will take a few more tries for you to find the right petite jumpsuit.
Every year in fashion weeks of New York, Paris and London, celebrities, fashion fans, fashion media and style bloggers gather around to watch the newest releases and trend setter of the largest names in the fashion industry. Some or the style release on the runway is quite conceptual, and a bit too much (honestly) such as layers and layers of laces, oversized boyfriend style jackets almost reaching the knees, and busy florals from top to bottom. However, the runway is full of tall and skinny models who showcase all kinds of fashion style and somehow it seems everything looks great on them, no matter how exaggerated or dramatic certain clothing are by real life standards. You ever wonder why? Probably because the models are 5’8” and a size 0. When you are that tall and that thin, your body is very forgiving and just about any style may look right on you. For normal people like you and me, unfortunately we cannot assume everything will just look good on us. It is especially a challenge for short girls to find the petite style that is flattering to them. Being 5’2”, I have done years of research on what are the best petite style and what doesn’t work. I am not a big fan of restrictions myself, but I have to admit the truth is there are petite style rules that we need to follow, if we want them to look good on us. On the other hand, fashion is also one of the most important means for us to express our individuality. If we all follow the rules, then the world is just a big cookie-cutting place, and we all look similar. How boring is that? Fashion just totally loses its point, if that is the case. We have put together this article so that you can get a flavor of how to break some of the petite style rules, and make your fashion the style of your own.
Rule1: Only wear mini skirts
This one is easy to break. I don’t remember how many times I have read about petite style advice that short women should not wear anything below the knees. Many stylist blogs (including some of my favorites) feel strongly that petite style equals short, and the reason is short girls will only look shorter if they wear long style. While it is quite true that mini skirts and mini dresses are universally flattering to petite women, they are not the only style you can wear and look good. The way to break this rule is to go to the opposite- wear maxi dresses or maxi skirts. Nicole Richie (5’1″) is the queen of petite woman rocking the Bohemian maxi style.
I am talking about dresses and skirts that reach (almost) your ankles. Surprisingly, they are very flattering to petite women. If you wonder why, here is the reason: petite women needs length in their style in order to look taller. Maxi dresses and skirts create that long column of colors which vertically lengthens and thus makes petite girls look taller.
Rule 2: stay away from midi dresses
Okay, I admit even I myself have mentioned in various blog posts that midi length is the hardest petite style to pull off. The reason is simple- it ends at an akward length at your calves between your knees and your ankles, so there is a big risk that your legs could look cut off. How to break this rule if you are really into midi dresses or skirts? The secret is the midi dresses with a see through (such as lace) bottom. I have seen this on a couple of petite style bloggers and petite celebrities, and it looks good on them. Why is so? It is because the see through style distracts people from the horizontal line formed around your calves, thus people will not easily notice your legs look cut-off. Seeing the skin of your legs will in fact make your proportion look better and legs look longer.
Rule 3: petites can’t pull off wide leg pants
The reason wide leg pants are not a recommended petite style is that they could give the perception of width instead of length, thus making you look shorter. Read more about What to Avoid if you have Short Legs.
Photo: Mira Duma (5′) the Spicy Stiletto
The way to break this rule is to go with long wide leg pants, and ditch those at the ankle length. To rock this petite style, you must pair it with a pair of high heels, and the best with pointy toes. You should make sure the pants are long enough to cover 2/3 of your heels, that way you will look taller and people cannot tell if the length comes from you or from your heels.
Rule 4: Big bold patterns don’t look good on petites
I can understand why stylists do not recommend petite women to wear big bold patterns. The one word petite women should always keep in mind is “proportion, proportion and proportion”. Any prints you wear need to be in proportion to your height and weight. Some say prints should be smaller than your fist. Large and busy prints easily overwhelm your petite body frame and make you look swamped. On the other hand, solid colors are much easier to style, as they are easier to form one consistent color (remember we talked about creating one column of color?) thus they are more flattering to short girls. However, how boring if our life is if we all have to wear solid colors or only small prints, especially floral designs? I myself is a die hard fan of prints, especially when it comes to sun dresses and short skirts.
The way to break this rule is to balance prints with solids. For example, if you are wearing a blouse with big and bold patterns, then pair it with a well fitted neutral color skirt or pants from the same color scheme as the main color of the pattern. This will balance it out and give you the benefit of monochromatic dressing. Another way is to wear dresses with larger floral prints, which achieves the same result of creating one single column of color because of the continuous pattern on the dress.
Rule #5 Petites should only wear knee length coats
While I agree coats above the knee or at the knee is the safest length for petite women, going longer can actually be very flattering if you master the skills. The way to break this rule is to go REALLY long, long enough to reach just a couple of inches above your ankle. Same concept as maxi dresses, wearing long coats can create a column of color that really elongates short girls. The key is to use a belt to define your waistline- and ideally, above your natural waistline, so that your legs can look a lot longer than they are. See 5 feet tall Mira Duma illustrates this look!
If you are petite and love to work out or happen to be a Yogi, you may have been frustrated with the limited choices of petite yoga pants on the market. Petite women have the hardest time shopping for clothing, and I mean, any kind of clothing- from coats to pajamas to petite yoga pants. Basically, anything that involves hems or inseams could be challenge for petite women. Work out clothing is no longer just about Nike and Reebok like in the old days, and there are so many new workout wear brands popping up every month. While our taller friends are trying out different new active wear brands and enjoying the chic designs, petite women feel left out once again. Very few designers have a dedicated petite line for their work out clothing, let alone carrying petite yoga pants, which means petite girls have to spend more time scouting out what works for them and be more creative. Plus, for us petite women, it will be nice if we can find the petite yoga pants that will make us look taller, since, obviously, we cannot wear heels on the mat! (Read more about How to Look Taller and what to avoid if you have short legs). Here are 5 must know tips based on experiences of many petite women that will help you find the best petite yoga pants to suit your petite body frame. (No, we do not recommend shopping at kid’s department, even though that sounds tempting). (Read here about where to find best petite work out clothing).

1. High rise petite yoga pants plus a crop top are your best friend
If you are petite, always go for the high wasited style, be it skirts, dresses or pants. Use the same concept when looking for your petite yoga pants. High rise design goes above your natural waistline, and makes your legs look longer and make you look taller. They are the best pal for a short/crop top. This design is embraced by many fitness brands, and the reason is not only they are more flattering, but also more comfortable and more suitable to wear in a workout. Who wants to be worrying about showing your panties when you are doing a down dog on your yoga mat?
High rise petite yoga pants look the best with shorter tops. Most petite women have shorter torso, so a regular top may look like a dress on you. Not only is that not flattering to petite girls, but also it is not convenient for a good work out when you need to be able to move swiftly. So, long top is a big no no. Opt for a well fitted crop top that fits just right on you. By wearing a short top with a high waisted petite yoga pants, it will give the illusion of longer legs.
If you are self-conscious about showing your mid section, high rise petite yoga pants will help you conceal your concern as well.
Also, petite women should stay away from a loose top. Any loose fit clothing is not flattering to petite women, period. Now, we understand you may not always want to wear skin tight tops in your work out, especially when you will sweat a lot and may feel better in cotton material clothing. The trick is to wear something fitted but not too tight.
2. Look for vertical design
One of the most important styling tips to flatter the petite body frame is to integrate vertical details in your outfits. The same applies to petite active wear. Vertical designs could be in various forms and don’t have to be vertical stripes. Some petite work out pants have vertical side panels or pipping along the side of the pants, which are flattering to petite women. The opposite is also true, i.e. horizontal design makes you look shorter, so try to avoid those if you can. For instance, work out pants with zig zagging designs seem to be quite trendy in the last couple of years. It is ok to wear them if you are petite, but just make sure the stripes are not totally horizontal, which will make your legs look even shorter.
3. Opt for solids or simple prints
For petite women, choosing the right prints is important in your styling of petite yoga pants Solid colors are great, and they are flattering for petite women in general. If you like prints, go for smaller prints that are in proportion to your body frame. Big and loud prints tend to overwhelm short girls and make you look smaller. If you are wearing a top with prints, then maybe it is a good idea to wear your petite yoga pants pants in solid colors to balance it out. Vice versa, Wearing prints in both top and bottom is ok in some cases when they are a set, but make sure they are not too busy and make you look swamped in colors.
4. Wear flared work out pants
Petite or not, we all want our legs to look longer and leaner. If you are under 5’4”, it is a good idea to add a couple of inches through the styling. But how do you achieve that when you are working out and cannot wear heels? The secret is wear a pair of flared work out pants. Flare pants style are universally flattering to any body type, and they are especially great for petites. Wearing flared workout pants will instantly make your legs look longer, because of the flare. Since regular size work out clothing are made to fit women of average height (5’4”) and inseam (31 inches), the flare pants are hard to pull off by petite women. The trick is to find these in petite workout clothing section, i.e. working out clothes cut and proportioned to fit petite women. If you buy a pair of regular size flared work out pants and have the tailor cut the hem, you need to make sure the knee cap is at the right place so that the flare look works on you.
5. Dark color leggings make your legs look leaner
One way to make your legs look longer and thinner is to opt for petite work out clothing of darker color. Since darker colors compress, they will make your legs look leaner effortlessly.
For petite women, it is never easy to find clothing of the right size that fits you and flatters you, even before you got pregnant. Now that you have the baby bump, it seems to be a mission impossible to find the right petite maternity clothing that is good quality and affordable. Being 5’2”, I understand how frustrating and disappointing for petite women to find the right clothing at almost any stage of their lives. Here is a few tips that have helped me through my pregnancy to find nice petite maternity clothing without having to overspend (you will have a million other places to spend that money after baby is born!) and I want to share with you. Click here to read 5 Best Places to Shop Petite Maternity Dresses.
1. Be a value shopper.
That doesn’t mean you should only buy the cheapest stuff you can find, but it means you should always look at how much use you can get from an item before you decide how much you are willing to spend. (From my personal experience, this actually applies not only shopping to petite maternity clothing, but also shopping in general. ) Here is the logic, many petite women will not have a noticeable baby bump until midway through pregnancy (4 or 5 months+ or sometimes even later)! So, that means you only need petite maternity clothing for about 5 months. If you happen to be due in winter, that means you will need petite maternity clothing for more than one season. If you get the petite maternity dresses for the summer, soon you will have to switch to thicker layers for the fall and winter. Therefore, if a dress costs $150, that may sound like a steal for a non-maternity dress. However, if you are only going to wear that for a two months, the value you can get out of it instantly changes! Of course it is totally up to you how much you would like to spend, and I am not discouraging you from buying designer name petite maternity clothing. If you have the budget, by all means! Trust me- I know pregnancy is hard work! So why not give yourself the pleasure and enjoyment of designer brands once in a while? Just always keep in mind to be a value shopper and shop for the items at designer maternity clothing stores that you can get most value out of.
2. Mix existing pieces
Your regular petite clothing can still last for a while, before anyone discovers your baby bumps. If you have relaxed fit cardigans or sweater, they can work pretty well as layers to your petite maternity dresses in the fall. That will not only save you money, but also create fresh looks and excitement. Have you thought of exploring your husband (or partner)’s wardrobe? Please do so, if you haven’t thought of that. His loose shirts and T-shirts can be really comfortable maternity sleep wear for you, to say the very least.
3. Be creative
Pregnancy is the fun time you might find some creative ways to create your own petite maternity clothing you might not have thought of otherwise. For example, I picked out a couple of larger size bright color long T-shirts at Gap made of 100% cotton and they hit just about 15 inches above my knees. They were so comfortable that I ended up wearing them as my petite maternity dresses for casual occasions over the summer. Also, a regular sized tunic may work as your petite maternity dress before the baby bump gets too noticeable.
4. Invest in a few staples
Along the same lines as being a value shopper, investing in a few wardrobe staples that will mix and match with anything else will save you a lot of money. The petite maternity clothing you will probably always need are petite maternity pants and jeans. You can also wear them at different occasions, plus, they work in different seasons from summer through winter. So, even if you have pay a little bit extra, they are worth it.
5. Size up smartly
So you know that your baby bump will continue to grow throughout the pregnancy. Therefore, picking the right size for your petite maternity clothing is important to accommodate the changes in your body in the months to come. If you are looking for a pair of petite maternity jeans, get a pair with expanding panels or an elastic waist bands. They are not only more comfortable, but also more adaptable in the few months to come as your waistline continues to expand. Use the same criteria when you are looking for a skirt or dress to make sure you don’t grow out of your petite maternity clothing too quickly and buy more. However, we are by no means recommending petite women to wear oversized petite maternity clothing, because that will not be flattering to your small frame and will make you look overwhelmed by the clothing.
6. Wear a wrap dress
Wrap dresses are my personal favorite. They are universally flattering and work especially well for the petite body frame. They hug your body at just the right places and show off your curves without being too revealing. Plus, they are good for the office, date night, and really any occasions you can think of. They should be your wardrobe staple regardless you are pregnant or not. After I was pregnant, I found wrap dresses to be the most versatile piece in my closet that adapted very well to my pregnancy. They are normally made of soft and flowy fabrics such as silk or soft polyester, which is perfect for pregnant women. Another bonus of wrap dresses is they can loosen up as your baby bump grows! And, I’m not even talking about wrap dresses in petite maternity clothing section- I was wearing the same DVF wrap dresses which I have collected over the years during the first 2 trimesters and very few people noticed I was pregnant! Therefore, if you have wrap dresses in your closet before you got pregnant, they will work perfectly for the first several months of your pregnancy. As your bump grows, just loosen up the strap and you will continue to wear it until much further along in your pregnant months.
Finding the perfect pair of pants or jeans with the right inseam length is not easy, if you are not an average height. And, it is especially hard if you are petite (under 5’4”) like myself (5’2”). (Click here to read about What is Petite). Since most brands carried in the department stores are made for women above 5’4”, you probably already experienced enough frustration and disappointment looking for the right pants or jeans. They are most likely dragging on the floor for petite women, or the knee caps are not at the right places. The solution could be taking them to the tailor and hem to the right inseam length, but the cost adds up (plus, just making them shorter doesn’t mean they will look flattering on you). It will be better for you to know what is the right inseam length for you and find them so that no hemming is necessary. Here is the guide to our fellow petites on the best inseam length-next time before you place an order, find your correct inseam length to ensure frustration free shopping experience. If you are not familiar with the word inseam, read about What does Inseam Mean. If you happen to be interested in DIY, read about How to Hem Jeans.
All petites are not created equally, and some are more petite than others. The best inseam length depends on a lot of factors, even for petites. Some petite girls are under 5’4”, but they may be blessed with longer legs than fellow petites thus their inseam length needs to be longer. In general, the most flattering inseam length for most petites should be 27 inches, and anything longer than that will only look good if you wear them with heels.
Other than the difference in individual body proportion, inseam length also to a large extent depends on the style of the pants or jeans. Skinny jeans should have different inseam length than wide leg pants, and boyfriend jeans should also be different than flare jeans. Here we have summarized the suggested inseam length for the most popular pants and jeans for you to consider.
Like suggested by its name, the cropped look is designed to show your ankles. Therefore, they are meant to be shorter. The best inseam length for petites should be between 21-23inches. Now, the risk of wearing cropped pants is because they are shorter, they may make your legs look shorter than they are. Ouch, that is the opposite of what a petite girl wants! So, a general guideline is to not wear anything shorter than 21 inches inseam. Of course, this is hard to generalize, as a petite girl could be 4’9” or 5’3”, which makes a big difference! If you don’t know what exactly your best length should be, one rule of thumb is to show as much skin as the width of your hands.
If you are going for the cropped look, we recommend you opt for straight leg or skinny jeans instead of cropped jeans with flare. Straight leg will fit most body shape, and skinny jeans will flatter those with slender legs. Either way, they are well fitted and will suit petite women. Cropped jeans with flare, on the other hand, will make your legs look more cut off, thus is not flattering to petite women.
If you like the causal style of boyfriend jeans, our recommended inseam length is 23’’ to 26’’. They are meant to sit just above the ankle, and a lot of girls like the cuffed look of boyfriend jeans for that extra dose of effortlessness. Therefore, expect the inseam to be a little on the shorter side than a classic straight silhouette. As much as we love the roomie fit of boyfriend jeans, we have to caution our fellow petites to do not wear those too loose or too boxy. Any bottoms not well fitted will only make petite women look shorter and they are not flattering. If you wear boyfriend jeans, the best look for petite girls is to dress these up with a pair of block heels (but not too chunky!) Or you could keep it casual with fashion sneakers, all while showing off some ankle.
Flare and bootcut jeans have the most pronounced leg opening of them all, and they could be very flattering to petite women if you are wearing the right inseam length and matching them with the right shoes. Yes, always wear them with heels! The reason is they require extra length to reduce that awkward moment when the widest part of your jean hits your ankle. 30 to 32inches are the ideal inseam length for our petite girls. Of course, it ultimately depends on your height and the heels you are planning to wear. Bootcut and flare jeans with heels are universally suitable for any body shape because of their body slimming effect & flattering fit, and especially among the topped rated styles for petite girls, as they effectively elongate your legs to the max extent.
Wide leg pants/ sailor pants
Wide leg or sailor pants are meant to run a little longer, just like the bootcut and flare. Therefore, these, more often than not, require a heel and should fall to the floor regardless of your height. Therefore, if your normal straight leg inseam (which hits just below your ankle) is 27”, and you are going to wear them with stiletto, then go for 31 inches. You get the idea. These are the kind of style that could be a hit or miss. Some may argue petite girls should not try to wear long pants like this, but you see them worn by petite celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Victoria Beckham and they look nice and chic. The reason they could be flattering for petite women is because of the floor length, which make your legs longer than they are. On the other hand, to pull off the wide leg look, the key is to remember any horizontal line in your outfit will only make you look shorter. Therefore, make sure the legs are not too wide.
Now, the question is can short girls rock the maxi dress trend? Many people have read in fashion magazines or stylist blogs that petite women are better off wearing shorter skirts in order to make their legs look longer. While that is true to some degree, petite girls actually have two choices in terms of the most flattering length. You can either go short or go long, and by long I mean really long (at least ankle length). In fact, maxi dresses for short girls can be one of the most flattering pieces in your wardrobe, if you master the skills of how to wear it. (Read the article about styling tips of maxi dresses for short women.) Because of the length, maxi dresses for short girls can create a single column of color, which effectively elongates petite women and make them look taller. (Read more about How to Look Taller)

So, maxi dresses for short girls are definitely something you should try, if you do not own several already. Now the bigger question is where do we find maxi dresses for short girls? Maxi dresses used to be such a privilege of taller girls because stores only carried them in regular length (women at least 5’5”). Maxi dresses for short girls was rarely known or next to unheard of. What I like about ASOS is that their models of maxi dresses for short girls are actually short girls! That means you can see what they look exactly on a 5’2” girl and what kind of shoes she is wearing (heels? Flats?), which makes it so much easier to estimate what it will look on you. Another reason we have picked ASOS as a favorite shop of maxi dress for short girls you can easily find them. They started “Don’t call me cute” line recently, which has some really chic and cute designs of maxi dresses for short girls. Their design of petite maxi dresses with side split is sexy and very flattering for short girls. We also love their colors- they are either in neutral solid colors or vertical prints, which are the best friends for a short girl searching for maxi dresses. The last thing a petite girl wants is to wear busy and loud floral prints all over and look swamped by the dress. Their price of petite maxi dresses is $218.

The common belief is a short woman only looks good in short skirts. While most would agree that a short woman can’t go wrong with a short skirt, we do believe there are ways for a short woman to wear long skirts as well. Now, I am talking about petite maxi skirts, not just any long skirts. We have to make that clear, because long and short are relative. A mini skirt is of course short, but some might consider a midi skirt (which ends between your knees and your ankles) is long. That is not our topic in this article, but you can find some tips on petite woman how to wear midi skirts here. Petite maxi skirts are not the easiest look to pull off, but we have seen petite celebrities wearing them such as Nicole Richie (5’2”) and Victoria Beckham (5’3”). If worn the right way, petite maxi skirts can very well elongate the petite figure of a short woman and be one of the most flattering pieces in your wardrobe. Learned from petite bloggers and petite celebrities, here are the top 5 tips and tricks we want to share with you to help achieve the elongating effect of petite maxi skirts.
1 The length is important
In order for a short woman to look good in petite maxi skirts, the length needs to be right. Some say the best is ankle length, while others say it might be better for it to hit the floor. Those who favor ankle length believe that is the easiest length of petite maxi skirts to wear for a short woman. Those who like it to brush off the floor also have a good point because that will make a short woman’s legs look the maximum length. Both could work, depending on the style of the petite maxi skirts and the shoes you a wearing with it. If you are wearing flats or sandals with no heels, you probably do not want the skirts to be dragging on the floor, which causes the danger of tripping on the fabrics and falling. If you are wearing high heels, it is better to go longer. The ideal length is for the hem of the skirts to be slightly above your heels without making it difficult for you to walk. The length you do not want is anything above your ankles, because that will make your legs look cut off and lose the point of wearing petite maxi skirts.
2 Solid colors or prints?
Another important factor to consider is what kind of color or prints will make a short woman look good in petite maxi skirts. In general, monochromatic dressing is the most flattering way of styling colors for a short woman, which applies here too. For those of you not familiar with the term, monochromatic dressing means what you wear from head to toe should be derived from a single based hue but extended using its shades, tints and hints. Wearing monochromatic color will create the illusion of length for a short woman and make you look taller. It does not mean you can only wear one identical color for your top and bottom. If you are wearing a baby blue top, then wearing a navy color petite maxi skirt will make you look good. (Read more about Why Short Women Must Know Monochromatic Dressing). If you like prints, a short woman should avoid prints that are too big or too loud. Many people like floral prints, which is something you can rock as a short woman as long as the flowers are in proportion to your size. Because petite maxi skirts cover such a big area of your body, you want to make sure you do not look swamped in too many colors.
3 Vertical details are elongating
Vertical details are the best friend of a short woman. It comes in many different forms. The easiest to identify is vertical stripes or prints that extend vertically. They effectively elongate your legs by creating the illusion of height. Another kind of vertical details is in the cut of the petite maxi skirts. For example, side split high on the legs is a very flattering design for a short woman.
4 Wear them with the right shoes
As a short woman, you probably prefer to wear heels when you feel like to add a few extra inches. It goes without saying that high heel sandals make a short woman look taller in petite maxi skirts. We normally advise a short woman to be careful about wearing bulky heels such as wedges, but if you are wearing a petite maxi skirt, by all means wear wedges. Because the skirts are so long, the benefit is people cannot really tell how bulky your heels are. In addition, it is not easy to tell if the length comes from your legs or the heels. Isn’t that great? Wearing wedges also makes it easier for you to walk in petite maxi skirts. However, don’t think you must wear heels with petite maxi skirts. Feel free to grab your favorite pair of flat sandals and wear them on the beach or by the pool with your maxi skirts for a casual and chic Bohemian look.
5 Choose the right material
Petite maxi skirts made with flowy jersey materials generally looks good on a short woman, because it hugs your body curve naturally unlike stiff fabrics. Petite maxi skirts made with lace or see through materials can also be flattering, because they have less weight and seeing through the skin has the elongating effect to make a short woman look taller.
When Wendy’s Lookbook took a top spot in the world’s best style blogs, everyone all of a sudden started to notice what petite girls have to say about fashion. You don’t have to be 5’6” in order to be a top influencer, which used to (or seemed to) be the privilege of the run way models or, at least, leggy girls . You could be as petite as Wendy, and look drop dead gorgeous. Today, petite fashion blogs are no longer a novelty, when so many fashionista under 5’4” have started their petite style blogs and share their outfits on Instagram and other media. As a petite girl myself, nothing is greater than seeing more and more petite fashion blogs popping up, because that means an increasing number of petite women have the confidence and the desire to influence. Amongst the best petite fashion blogs, majority of the bloggers are in their 20s and some are 30s. Is it because 20s and 30s are the age when we have most of the time (and perhaps interest) to dress up and share our outfits? Maybe. Or maybe blogging after 40 is not easy, because most people have a different life style after 40s, e.g. busier with kids and tend to focus more on family. If you ever wonder whether petite fashion blogs is just the thing of the 20 year olds and 30 year olds, then you are wrong. There are great petite bloggers well over 40 with impeccable fashion style who are sharing with fellow petites their latest fashion finds as well as life stories. You can turn to their blogs for ageless outfit inspiration as well as beauty secrets and life wisdom! Here is our guide to the top petite fashion blogs over 40, who are down to earth, budget friendly, and easy to copy.
This is a aesthetically stunning blog all around. The moment you open up this website, you will be instantly drawn into the beautiful and elegant design. On her blog, April mentioned she decided to start this blog devoted to fashion for petite women, after she had the 4th baby and lost the baby weight. With 4 gorgeous children, April is the model “Mommypreneur”, who had done it all and now have it all, i.e. she had ran a photography business, moved across the country and now she is also a doctor in addition to a successful petite style blogger with a huge following on Instagram and all other social media. She said she considers herself an artist, which is quite obvious when you visit her blog. The theme, the color, and the photos all remind me of the impressionist classics of Renoir. Her style is classic and timeless, with a pop of color. Mixing high and low labels makes her blog fun, versatile and relatable. We highly recommend her blog as one of the best petite fashion blogs over 40, especially if you are seeking inspiration for paring high fashion labels with day to day down to earth outfits. Her outfit picks range from a wide range of price points. You will find her wearing classic designer names such as Burberry coat, Gucci belt, as well as a $56 petite dress on sale from ASOS. In addition to petite fashion, she also share her beauty tips and lifestyle tips. The bonus point? If you are enthusiastic about photography, you will learn a great deal from her posts such as “How to choose camera and lens for fashion photography” and “How to shoot in manual mode” and improve your photo taking skills.
This is a petite fashion blog by Grace Liang. When you open this blog, you will immediately be drawn by the stylish outfit with amazingly bold and beautiful color paring by Grace (as suggested by the name). In one outfit, she wears a black leather jacket over a light pink dress, wearing Valentino heels in bright yellow and carrying a mini purse in the same shade of yellow. In another, she wears a black and white wide strap crop top with a red/black print midi skirt, paring red strapping stilettos. It is amazing how Grace can make all these colors work seamlessly in these seemly effortless outfits. But that is not all. You have to know Grace as a person, and that is how I felt after I read her blog. On her blog, she shares with you the most personal story of her life about her unfortunate childhood in China and how she moved to the US for love and was happily married for 10 years. After losing her husband, she did not let the grief stop her. Instead, she got even stronger. On the blog post celebrating her blog turning 3, Grace shared her secret to success was really no secret but hard work- 600 posts over 3 years! You will feel like you have known her for a long time, and feel like she is the friend you want to reach out to and hear from. This is one of the best petite fashion blogs over 40 not only because of the impeccable style of Grace, but also because she is really putting herself out there to encourage and inspire women to be stronger, work harder and achieve their own dreams.
This is a petite fashion blog by Trina, a master of Bohemian style. Now, Bohemian style is not easy to pull off for petite women like Trina, because this style is casual, loose and less form fitting (the easier way to flatter petite body frame). However, on Trina’s blog, you will see her love of wearing maxi dress in eye catching colors and she looks effortless chic in those looks. For some reason, she can rock those ankle length dresses with flats and you will not notice she is petite. She is also a master of mixing bright reds and pins with a muted backdrop. If you love colorful outfits and maxi looks, you will find a lot of inspiration on Tina’s blog, and that is why we recommend her as one of the best petite fashion blogs over 40.
This is a blog by food and fashion writer Sherry, who is also a technical illustrator for patent applications. It’s hard for me to imagine writing about things that seem to be in so far apart in different spectrum, but Sherry does it all very well. When I first visit this blog, my eyes were caught by Sherry wearing classic wrap dresses in different shades of popping colors such as black and white stripes, bright blue and saturated red. (I am a big wrap dress fan myself and own a whole wardrobe of DVF wrap dresses). In addition, what stands out about this blog is the “Fashion by Era” section from 1920s to 2000s and the modern day, shown her real passion about fashion. On her blog, Sherry mentioned when she turned 45 years old, she decided to get out of her fashion rut and find her signature style. In addition to exploring the industry through fashion designers, artists and local boutiques, she seeks out vintage and thrifted treasures as a way of creating a look of all her own. Sherry wears XSP. We recommend this site as one of our best petite fashion blogs for those of you looking for vintage style inspiration.
If you are petite, it is already hard enough for you to find the clothing that fits you. If you are petite and pregnant, that challenge doubles! When I was shopping for petite maternity dresses, I have found most of the maternity shops were either oversized or overpriced. If you are petite and skinny, you may not show any of your baby bump until the midterm (i.e. 5 months and sometimes even later), so you really only need 5 months of maternity clothes for the rest of your pregnancy. Now, if you are due in winter, then the petite maternity dresses would only last you a couple of months before you need to switch to winter layers. Since I am a value shopper, I was not going to splurge on the designer labels of petite maternity dresses. I have found the following places with reasonable prices and their quality was fine. Their selection is good enough to have all the maternity clothing I needed in addition to petite maternity dresses.
They carry a wide selection of petite maternity clothing from petite maternity dresses, sweaters to pants/jeans as well as coats. If your budget is under $100, you will find a good selection of petite maternity dresses range from $39 to $79, and sometimes even lower if they are on sales. I have found some of their regular sized maternity dresses fit me just fine, as long as the length was ok for me. The petite maternity jeans have different cuts such as straight leg, skinny, boot cut and flare- basically everything you would normally wear, so you don’t have to ditch your favorite style just because you are expecting. Their maternity jeans is 28 inches, a perfect inseam length that will fit most women under 5’4”. They are made of stretchy material, so comfortable when you are going through pregnancy. The best part is they also have brick-and-motor stores where you could try on everything and see if they actually fit before you purchase. That is a fantastic news for us petite women who are always struggling to find retail stores that carry our petite sizes and the only solution is to go online. If you do feel like to splurge a little once in a while, they do have designer maternity jeans with a much higher price tag.
If you are petite, I am sure you are familiar with the petite line of Loft. Loft is the more affordable sister line of Ann Taylor, and their casual and work clothing both have petites. In their maternity section you can find a variety of petite maternity dresses at reasonable prices. They also have a good selection of maternity jeans, maternity slim pants, chino pants and stylish maternity leggings in faux leather paneled ponte. Their price range is similar to the other items of Loft. A pair of petite maternity pants are usually around $79, and their petite maternity dresses are around $60. For under $100, you can get a couple of essentials that will last you through the critical months of pregnancy. The best part is they have regular promotions and even bigger sales around holidays, so get ready to jump on those deals and score amazing finds at unbelievably low prices during those times.
This is my go-to place for inexpensive petite maternity dresses. Nothing fancy, but you can pretty much find any essential you need at Old Navy. What I love about their maternity section is you can shop by trimester. If you are a first time Mom and have little idea where to start, by all means try their starter kit and shop by trimester. They also have a from “Hospital to Home” section, which makes it so convenient for inexperienced expecting Moms! Their maternity dresses don’t really specify petite sizes, but their maternity pants and jeans do have the option of short, regular or long inseam. Their prices are always unbeatable, where you can sometimes get petite maternity dresses for under $20 when they are on sale! Even their regularly priced petite maternity pants are $39. It doesn’t get better than this if you are looking for something causal and easy to outfit to last through a few months!
If you are familiar with the petite shop at gap, then you can’t miss the petite maternity dresses by Gap. This is like a higher end cousin of Old Navy, where you can also shop by trimesters. Like Old Navy, their maternity dresses may not be petite sizes, but that sometimes may not matter if you are just looking for a comfortable and loose fit dress to last through the pregnancy. Gap Maternity has the best selection of maternity jeans that you love. If you like their regular jeans line, you will love this place to find the same style, only tailored for expecting Moms. For example, you can find maternity boyfriend jeans at Gap, which is not available at many other places. They have short inseam available for our petite expecting Moms that will fit you perfectly without hemming.
I’m sure most petite girls have heard of ASOS and shopped with them at some point, and they are also your best friend if you are expecting and looking for fast fashion for petite maternity dresses. Even then they are a UK company, ASOS is a quite popular brand amongst petite shoppers in the US because of their reasonable prices and fast delivery. Their review is a bit of a mixture- they are known for fast fashion and low prices, and you sometimes hear complaints about their fabrics. Well, it all depends on your expectation. like I mentioned earlier, I personally don’t expect to spend a ton on maternity clothing thus I’m not expecting premium designer quality either. So when I was looking for petite maternity dresses, I came to check out ASOS maternity section. The best part about their petite maternity dresses is that you can find some styles rare on other websites such as petite maxi maternity dresses. Think about it- it’s hard enough for us petite girls to find maxi dresses that won’t drag on the floor, let alone those made specially for expecting petite Moms! Their price range is consistent with other clothing line on ASOS, and you can normally get anything you like for under $80. You can find petite maternity joggers for only $29, and a pair of stylish petite leather looking maternity leggings for only $35.
