Cruise Club UK by Natalies Nautical Tales - 1M ago

Oasis of the Seas was an industry first when she was launched 10 years ago ( Wow how time flies! ). I remember being so excited when I booked to go on ‘ the worlds largest cruise ship ‘. I was so impressed with the ship and it is still to this day one of my favourite cruises.

In September this year she will undergo a 63 day refurbishment and will emerge in November with some fantastic new features. Over the next four years Royal Caribbean are modernising 10 ships in what they are calling ‘ Royal Amplified ‘. Oasis of the Seas is the first of the Oasis class ships to be done and is costing around $165 million!

Below is an overview of some of the new features;

Pool Deck

The deck itself will take an a new Caribbean style complete with swing seats, hammocks and casitas and will also be home to the new 3 storey Lime and Coconut bar.  There will be some new hot tubs added to the area and the adult only solarium will also have a refresh.

An exciting addition in my eyes is the 10 storey high Ultimate Abyss slide plus the Perfect Storm waterslides.

Little ones will be impressed with the new Splashaway Bay water park which will have water cannons, fountains and pools along with 3 small waterslides, a splash pad for toddlers and also twin drenching buckets which is a Royal Caribbean first.

Entertainment

The Boardwalk area sees the addition of Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade, which features 80 big screen tv’s, classic arcade machines and a pub style menu.

The ever popular Bionic bar, with 2 robotic bartenders, will be added and Karaoke lovers will be impressed with the addition of Spotlight Karaoke which will feature 2 private rooms and a stage.

Spotlight Karaoke

A new venue for the ship is the Music Hall which will host cover bands, feature a large dancefloor, pool tables and also have another level with just seating to relax and enjoy the offerings.

Music Hall

Dining

A new speciality restaurant called Portside BBQ will be added which is a Royal Caribbean first. The restaurant will be a la carte pricing rather than a set cover charge and will feature dishes such as brisket, beef ribs, pulled pork and chicken and burnt ends. It is a meat lovers paradise! There will also be a selection of sides such as mac and cheese, homestyle cornbread, coleslaw and beans.

Portside BBQ

A complimentary venue being added is the Mexican grab and go El Loco fresh, serving up made to order favourites such as tacos and burritos.

Not really a dining venue but the popular Sugar Beach will be added to the Boardwalk area. Sugar beach features 220 varieties of sweets and will also feature a walk up ice cream window.

Sugar Beach

If you would like to try the Royal Amplified Oasis of the Seas for yourself, she will be sailing 7 night Eastern and Western Caribbean out of Miami from 24th November.

While other cruise lines are running on fuel that is polluting the environment Hurtigruten will become the first Cruise Operator to be powered by the natures of life.

Signing a seven-year-plus deal with Norwegian company Biokraft who will deliver almost daily the delivery of Biogas which will power the ships with fuel made from dead fish and other Organic Waste.

Hurtigruten claims to be the first Cruise line in the world to be running on fossil-free fuel.

The cruise line is aiming to have the Hybrid ships running by 2021 running on clean electric power and natural gas known as LNG and Biogas known as LBG.

The renewable biogas is already used in the transport sector especially in buses.

With Norway and parts of Northern Europe having a large fishing industry and forestry sectors that already produce a large amount of organic waste giving Biokraft the opportunity to become the world leader in Biogas

This new deal between Biokraft and Hurtigruten could see a change for the future of the cruise and shipping industry in general.

With climate change being a worldwide problem and our Oceans being under pressure from pollution Biokraft is hoping to make a big change to this with dedicated partners like Hurtigruten.

Hurtigruten’s CEO Daniel Skjeldam stated ‘’This is a large and significant move for Hurtigruten, for Biokraft, for green solutions in the global shipping industry, and most importantly, for the environment.’’

Unusually founded during the jet age, in 1965 Stanley McDonald noticed that the ships used for Alaskan summer sightseeing voyages weren’t being used in the Winter season. Stanley found he could rent the ships during the off season for an unbelievable price – keeping the ships on the West cost of America and sailing south to the warmer Mexican Riviera the Bookings came flooding in !

The big problem – the Alaska ships had not been built with Air Conditioning the heat of Mexico proved to be… problematic.

The very next year they introduced another ship (with Air conditioning) the “italia” on a charter from Costa Cruises Italy. The “Princess Italia” as she was nicknamed as a very popular addition to the new Princess Line and stayed with them for 6 years

Classic Princess “at Anchor”

Their third ship (formerly Costa cruises Carla C and the SS flandre) was named “Princess Carla” and it was on this ship that the Author Geraldine Saunders found her inspiration for the “Love Boat”.

In 1974 with much fanfare the twin sisters Island and Pacific princess joined the Princess fleet and in 1976 the Pacific Princess became the inspiration and feature for ten years of “”the love boat” The Twin sisters sailed for the line for over 28 years.

The Love Boat

It was also in 1974 that the ongoing success of princess peaked the interest of the worlds largest shipping company (P&O) and a significant offer was made and accepted for the business. P&O transferred their new build ship “the spirit of London” directly to Princess cruises and christened her “sun princess.”

For 29 years P&O operated Princess as a subsidiary until the Carnival Corporation scooped them all up into their operation 2003. Carnival spun Princess off as an entirely separate High-Mid market brand and operated by Holland America cruises.

Significant investment into hardware with the “most expensive ship ever built” (in 1998) sparked a growth and demand for the line that thrives to this day.

The most expensive ship ever built (at the time)

As always, I love hearing your comments / feedback and suggestions for future blogs and you know where to reach me when you’re ready to book your next cruise !

Yesterday saw the day that NCL changed their pricing concept from ‘Premium All Inclusive’ to ‘Free at Sea’.

2 years after the initial change to ‘Premium All Inclusive’ the idea behind the new concept is to offer greater flexibility for you, the travelling guest. This change will allow you to choose if you want to add on extra benefits, and if so, pick the offers which provide you the best value.

When NCL first introduced the concept it was an industry first and slowly but surely more cruise lines followed suit, offering a drinks package and or gratuities as part of an early booking offer. This made the NCL offering less unique so forced them to undertake market research in to what was really important to guests. Flexibility and choice came out top so the new and improved concept ‘Free at Sea’ was born!

The image below details the new concept and the offers you can choose to have included.

I think this is going to be a positive change for NCL and as you can see from the price below, it is fantastic value for money!

The drinks package alone is worth over £300 per person, based on a 7 night cruise, and then you also get to pick another benefit as well. The value for money is clear!

Why not take a look at the new and improved prices with NCL on our website as I’m sure you will be tempted to give them a try for your next cruise.

P&O cruises.

Tracing the history of P&O as we know it today the origins start back in 1822 when the peninsular steam navigation company (catchy name) first started on its cargo sailings from Dover to the Iberian Peninsula.

With a reliable regular service and excellent pricing the company was soon pushing further and onward into the Mediterranean – reaching as far as Egypt by 1840.

The first passenger “sea tour” was offered by the company in 1844 offering adventurous Victorians a chance to go and wonder at the distant spectacle of Gibraltar – this paying passenger trade is widely recognised as the first “cruise” as we know it and gives then the distinct honour of the oldest cruise line still in operation.

Business on these new Sea Tours was excellent and led to the peninsular navigation company ordering new ships specifically designed and built to carry passengers further and further Also whilst still offering the successful cargo routes. In 1918 the company took the bold step and merged with the Orient Steam Navigation company so they could offer journeys all the way to the orient and beyond – they became the Peninsula and Oriental Steam packet company.

During the Second World War their fleet was mostly commandeered by the British government as troop carriers, The war cost P&O dearly and over the war 150 of their ships were sunk.

Post War the company got into the Expat relocation voyages carrying Britons and Europeans to Australia onboard their brand new ships – however the Jet age was hitting them hard in the 1970’s the company was forced to have a massive over hall and re-organization of their business.

The Cargo division became P&O ferries and the passenger Division was sold off and abbreviated to P&O cruises.

Margins were slim during the late 70s and 80s but the company held on and became part of the ever expanding Carnival Corporation and the company became the line we know today.

Since then the company has gone through a renaissance and with some of the finest ships afloat the some of the most advanced ships on the order books this is a boom time for the oldest cruise-line in the world.

Cruise Club UK by Captain Cookson - 4M ago

Good Afternoon, evening, morning (whatever time zone you’re in) cruisers and welcome to my new series of blogs about the history of the industries much loved cruises lines.

Today’s brief history is.. Celebrity Cruises.

Celebrity cruises as we know them today can trace their origin back to 1966 when the Chandris brothers started offering relocation voyages from Greece to Australia. Their first ship the patris (built in Belfast in 1950 as the Bloemfontain Castle) started the lucrative Athens to Australia route.

In the mid 1970’s the Jet age had taken its effect on the line and a drastic restructure and a new identity was needed to re-energise the line. The booming cruise industry proved to be the saviour of Chandris.

                 Classic Chandris Postcard.

Fast forward to 1988 and we start to see the line we know today. In 1988 the Chandris brothers noticed a boom in the Caribbean / Bahaman cruises and were keen to cash in on the boom.

They set up a subsidiary brand to cash in on the market and Celebrity Cruises was born.

Keeping the White X logo the first voyage for the new Celebrity cruises operated in 1988 onboard the “Galileo” – and business was good (very good) so good in fact that they ordered brand new ships. In the early 1990’s Celebrity was more profitable than Chandris. In 1996 the decision was made to close Chandris. With Celebrity continuing and prospering – business was good on board the current fleet Meridian, Horizon & Zenith and they had three brand new ships on order Century, Galaxy and Mercury

1997 the success of Celebrity cruises peaked the interests of the rival cruise lines and bids were coming in to take over operations, the rest as they say is history!

———

The letter X in the Greek alphabet is pronounced “chi” – Chadris adopted this as their logo and its still carried by the celebrity ships today.

The White X we know and love.

———-

Hope you found that interesting and you now have some interesting conversation starters for the next time you cruise with Celebrity.

Tarar for now and happy sailing.
