Deeply focused on sourcing as sustainably and ethically as possible, Wabi-Sabi Botanicals places a special emphasis on cooperatives that empower women through fair wages and working conditions.

Uncompromising in their standards across 5 categories – Origin, Composition, Sensory Experience, Sustainability and Bioavailability, this is a skincare line that checks all the boxes.

Formulated with organic and/or organically wildcrafted plant ingredients that contain active phytonutrients essential to skin health, Wabi-Sabi Botanicals promises effective products that are sustainable, unadulterated and cruelty-free.

Chatting with Elysse Crabtree, founder of Wabi Sabi Botanicals
Why Clean Beauty?

There’s something about using products that are made with love and intention in micro-batches with fresh, Earth-to-Skin ingredients, that feels so incredibly good for the body, mind and spirit.

It really goes beyond the skin benefits – it’s a total sensory experience and the ritual of adorning yourself in these beautiful, luxurious ingredients is completely opposite to the experience I had for my most of my life – slathering prescription creams, harsh gels, and very sort of clinical-feeling products on my face.

Clean beauty is not only about the benefits and results you get by using the products – it’s about the conscious, intentional, loving rituals, or ‘self-loving moments’ as I call them, we give to ourselves by using these products.

Your self care ritual: an indulgent weekly event or finding moments whenever you can get them?

Both. I have my brief, but nourishing 5-minute rituals in the morning and evening, the bookends on my day, and then I make space for a beautiful face mask, a bath soak, or a body scrub at least once a week.

Your deserted island product

I can’t live without an SPF. I love Skincare’s MALU Protecting Day Cream. My Wabi-Sabi Botanicals ‘deserted island’ product would be Eau Sacree No. 2 | Heart Rising – a gorgeous ritual facial mist with jasmine, white rose, royal Hawaiian sandalwood.

I feel most beautiful when…

I’m barefoot, hair down, adorned in flowers, connecting with nature, massaging beautiful oils into my skin, and/or surrounded by people I love.

What’s the #1 piece of advice you would you tell your past self just getting started?

Buckle up. *Laughs* But, seriously, I would tell her to outsource. Be patient. Take risks. Invest in yourself. Enjoy the ride.

My husband really likes coffee. When we go out to get coffee he makes a cup before we leave. We call it his ‘to get there coffee’.

Last mother’s day (my first) we woke up in a hotel room in Savannah, GA. We’d been traveling with our 5 month old for 2 weeks and he’d conveniently stopped sleeping (like, at all) on day 2.

It was 4 am, we had a flight to catch in 2 hours. We were just a little tired.

We weren’t about to have the Mother’s Day champagne brunch with instagram-worthy flowers I had envisioned pre-kid. We were about to fly home cross-country with a cranky infant and our surprise vacation toys had lost their magic a week ago.

On the bedside table was an almond milk latte (praise be) and a Mother’s Day card – a ‘to get there card’ my husband had written.

He promised a ‘real’ celebration when we got home.

The thing is, it ended up being a pretty wonderful day.

Apparently when you fly on Mother’s Day with your family, 1. EVERYONE wishes you a Happy Mother’s Day (which felt pretty good as a first timer) and 2. Fellow flyers have a little more patience 3 hours into the flight when your baby has a 10 minute meltdown – she looks like she’s doing the best she can and hey it’s Mother’s Day!

The big fanfare isn’t important. All we really want is for the people we are on this journey with to show us that they see us.

That both the big sacrifices and the small mundane things we do for our families on a daily basis are appreciated.

To share a few inside jokes with.

My own mama lives 2000 miles away, but I’ll be celebrating her from afar and sending her a mama-care package. Because she’s been rocking this job for 34 years.

I’m sending her a Kahina Giving Beauty Moisture Mask (she fell in love after I introduced her to mine over Christmas) and Live Botanicals Luna Moisture Elixir because it’s like bouquet of flowers on your face every day.

Feel like sprinkling a little love on your own mama, your fave aunt or a new mama who needs a little extra TLC? Our bi-monthly boxes also make a really great gift.

Founder / Mom

You’ve probably seen the term ‘Gua Sha’ coupled with gem stone tools in various hues all over the internet. Crystal facial massagers are everywhere, but why are we rubbing rocks on our faces in the name of skin care?

Because they work.

‘Gua Sha’ (pronounced Gwa-shaw) is a traditional Eastern Medicine massage technique that works by moving energy around the body. The treatment involves using a stone tool to scrape the skin in long strokes, creating micro trauma to the skin to increase blood flow and reduce inflammation.

It’s even been shown to help reduce migraine headaches.

Facial gua sha is a much more gentle version of this technique, focusing on the facial muscles down to the décolletage.

The Benefits

Facial gua sha increases blood flow and circulation to the face, stimulating lymphatic drainage and reducing puffiness in the face. The increased circulation and blood flow provides proteins, nutrients, and oxygen for better healing and cell turnover, promoting glowing, vibrant skin.

One study saw an increase in microcirculation by up to 400%.

Great, I’m sold. Now tell me how to use it.

How to give yourself a facial massage

Starting with clean skin, apply a balm or serum to create a surface for the Rose Quartz to easily glide without pulling the skin. The key is to hold the stone at 45 degree angle towards your face and stroke upwards with a medium touch. Move outwards around the contours of your face, stimulating blood flow. Feel the stone begin to heat up as you massage, increasing its benefits.

Massage face for 2-5 minutes, making sure to spend equal amounts of time per side.

When to use it

Massage in the AM to increase circulation and reduce puffiness.
Massage in the PM for a calming nightly beauty ritual, increasing absorption of nighttime treatments.

Expect some redness afterwards due to increased circulation which should subside after 20-30 minutes.

Well and Good recently published an article about the harsh realities of the longtime loved Cetaphil face wash.

To summarize, Cetaphil and many dermatologists have been promoting it for years as the best gentle facial cleanser for sensitive skin. It only has 8 ingredients, but after water they are all manufactured chemicals.

And we wouldn’t exactly call them gentle.

What’s the problem?

The ingredients include 3 different parabens (known to cause endocrine disruption and linked to breast cancer), propylene glycol (increases chemical penetration into your skin and bloodstream) and sodium lauryl sulfate (known to cause skin irritation). Additionally, ethylene oxide is often added to sodium lauryl sulfate in order to make the chemical less irritating to skin and hair. This process creates a byproduct called 1,4-dioxane, a known carcinogen. Exposure can be toxic to the brain, liver and kidneys.

Read more about the scary effects of these chemicals on your body here.

What now?

We get it, weaning yourself from a product you’ve been using for years and are generally happy with may seem unnecessary. Why fix what’s not broken? Unfortunately, even if you aren’t seeing these potentially scary side effects right now, the long term health effects of these chemicals can be really serious.

Think about it, if you wash your face twice a day, over 10 years you are applying these controversial chemicals to your skin 7,300 times. That’s also just your face wash, think of the other products you use throughout the day. Makeup, shampoo, body wash, moisturizer. It all starts to add up really fast.

To make the separation anxiety a little bit less traumatic we found 5 gentle cleansers with clean ingredients to replace Cetaphil’s spot on your counter.

1. Live Botanical Aer Complexion Cleanser

This hydrating, oil-free and soap-free milky gel gently cleanses without stripping or disrupting the skin’s delicate acid mantel. Formulated for acne prone and sensitive skin, mild astringents like green tea and aloe balance natural, healthy oil production without drying or stripping.

A customer fave, this is an easy transition to clean beauty, helping you maintaining a fresh, hydrated complexion. 100ml / $30

“You’ll be left with a clean, beautifully moisturized finish – no dryness, no stripping.”

– Elysse Crabtree, Wabi-Sabi Botanicals founder

EXPERT TIPS FROM THE FOUNDER:
  • Use as a daily cleanser to dissolve makeup and impurities, massage onto dry skin and remove with a warm, wet wash cloth.
  • Apply as a face moisturizer after cleansing to soothe inflammation, improve skin tone and texture and actively help prevent premature aging.
  • Apply head-to-toe to tone skin and fight cellulite. The concentrated caffeine in Roasted Coffee Oil helps to reduce water retention.
  • As a nourishing and strengthening hair oil treatment, apply a couple of pumps to scalp and hair, leave in for 30 minutes before washing with shampoo. Hair will be left feeling soft and nourished without feeling weighed down.

ROSELLA HIBISCUS OIL -dubbed Nature’s Botox- is a natural source of Alpha Hydroxy Acids to exfoliate and firm

MORINGA OIL combats acne and blemishes with nutrient-rich content and vitamins C & E

ROASTED COFFEE BEAN OIL & CACAO awaken the skin and senses while protecting the outer skin layer from damaging free radicals

Q + A with Elysse Crabtree, Founder of Wabi-Sabi Botanicals

When/how do you love to use the product?
You can use The Giver as a first cleanse or as an only cleanse! Massage The Giver in to dry skin to dissolve makeup, and use a warm, wet cloth to wipe away. You’ll be left with a clean, beautifully moisturized finish – no dryness, no stripping.

Because The Giver is made entirely of pure, unrefined plant oils, you can also use it as a moisturizer at the end of your skincare ritual. Sapote, Hibiscus, and Moringa Oils are packed with vitamins and nutrients that soothe inflammation, improve skin tone and texture, and actively prevent premature aging, while Roasted Coffee and Cacao infuse skin with powerful antioxidants. Massage one pump (or less if you prefer a more matte finish) of The Giver into skin as the final step in your evening ritual and let it works its magic. Sometimes I like to go over it with one of our Crystal Ritual Facial Rollers as well as it provides the perfect velvety canvas and even more benefits.

You can also use The Giver head-to-toe, especially applied to areas where you may have cellulite as the concentrated caffeine in Roasted Coffee Oil reduces water retention and helps to break down ‘fat stores’, thereby reducing the appearance of cellulite over time!

What inspired the product/ingredients?
I’m usually inspired by ingredients first and then create a formula around an ingredient – in this case, I fell in love with Sapote oil. It’s similar to coconut oil in that it turns to a soft butter in colder temperatures, it has this milky, creamy texture, and smells like sweet, cherry almond marzipan – I just love it and was inspired to create an indulgent, almost dessert-like product around it. And so The Giver was born.

How long has it been part of the line?
It just launched in November of 2018.

Can you give us some insight on the ingredient formulation process?
I choose ingredients based on sourcing, first and foremost – does this ingredient meet Wabi-Sabi Botanicals standards for ingredient sourcing, sustainability, etc? This really narrows down what ingredients I’m willing to work with. Once an ingredient has been vetted, I befriend it – I get to know its texture, how it plays with other ingredients, its active components and skin benefits. The formulas almost make themselves, I’m just a messenger of sorts.

What is the star ingredient in the product and why?
Every ingredient is a star. That’s why I keep the formulas simple and really allow the ingredients to shine without ‘filler’ ingredients or added fragrance. It would be doing the ingredients a disservice to manipulate or hide them – they’re just magical all on their own.

“Balancing Act is super lightweight and fast-absorbing, leaving a beautiful matte finish on the skin!”

– Elysse Crabtree, Wabi-Sabi Botanicals founder

EXPERT TIPS FROM THE FOUNDER:
  • Use as a targeted treatment to balance skin/areas that lend itself to oiliness and breakouts. Roll directly onto areas that need attention.
  • As a daily moisturizer for all skin types roll onto cheeks, forehead and chin and massage into skin for a smooth, balanced complexion. Drier skin types may want to compliment with a moisturizer on top.
  • Perfect as a makeup primer, the super lightweight and fast-absorbing formula leaves a matte finish.
  • Mix with your favorite face oil or cream by rolling into your palm, then add your moisturizer, mix and apply to face.
  • For acne-prone skin types, use together with Wabi-Sabi Botanicals’ Blemish Correct Serum – apply Blemish Correct as a spot treatment with a layer of Balancing Act all over the face.

GUAVA SEED OIL soothes, firms and protects skin from environmental damage

Peruvian SACHA INCHI SEED OIL helps reduce appearance of scarring and wrinkles, balances acne-prone skin and rebuilds the skin’s natural protective barrier.

BORAGE SEED OIL helps regulate hormonal imbalances, calms inflammation and hydrates thanks to high levels of Gamma Linoleic Acid

BRAZILIAN TIGER’S EYE reduces feelings of anxiety, promotes self-confidence and balances hormones

Q + A with Elysse Crabtree, Founder of Wabi-Sabi Botanicals

When/how do you love to use the product?
This Limited Edition version of Balancing Act is made with fresh Guava Seed Oil pressed from rare Red Guava Seeds (as opposed to the usual White Guava Seeds) making it even more potent, powerful, and unique than the original formula. Don’t worry – the natural terracotta hue of the oil is thanks to all of the vitamins and nutrients in fresh Guava Seed Oil and won’t stain your skin!

Roll Balancing Act onto skin anywhere you experience a skin ‘imbalance’ – ie. excess sebum, breakouts. Use the pads of your fingers to massage into skin. If you tend to get oily around your T-zone, roll Balancing Act directly onto your T-zone morning and evening to help balance sebum production. If you’re prone to breakouts, use Balancing Act alone or in conjunction with our Blemish Correct serum, applying Blemish Correct as a spot treatment with a layer of Balancing Act applied all over the face.

While it doesn’t look it, Balancing Act is super lightweight and fast-absorbing, leaving a beautiful matte finish on the skin! This makes it perfect for use as a makeup primer. Simply roll onto cheeks, chin, forehead, and nose and massage into skin before applying makeup for the perfect silicone primer alternative.

What inspired the product/ingredients?
I’ve always loved Guava Seed Oil. It’s a by-product of the Guava juice/puree industry in Brazil – normally the seeds would be discarded and go to waste. But our supplier cold-presses them to release a beautiful, lightweight, fast-absorbing oil that is the primary ingredient in Balancing Act.

How long has it been part of the line?
Balancing Act launched with the other four Intensif serums in January of 2018.

Can you give us some insight on the ingredient formulation process?
The formulation process is very intuitive for me, but there’s also a science element to it. Studies have shown that oily and acne-prone skin lack certain essential fatty acids – namely, Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. So the ingredients that came together for this particular formula are extraordinarily high in Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids.

What is the star ingredient in the product and why?
All three of the ingredients are stars! But I do have a particular love for Guava Seed Oil – the story behind it, the texture, the fresh Guava scent, how quickly it absorbs.

“With Nourish, you literally have a serum that can be used on hair, face and body.”

– Dana Jackson, Beneath Your Mask founder

EXPERT TIPS FROM THE FOUNDER:
  • Mix with conditioner and let it sit for 30 minutes for soft, healthy hair.
  • Apply as your face serum for extra nourishment and glow.
  • Mix a few drops into powder masks for a moisturizing boost and to promote a smooth complexion.
  • Mix with your favorite powder foundation to create an even, luminous finish.
  • To tame frizz and flyaways, apply to hair ends.
  • Apply to hair before drying to use as heat protectant.
  • Use as your all-over body/face/hair moisturizer when traveling.

HEMP SEED OIL promotes healing and balances oil. Softens and strengthens hair.

NEEM OIL smoothes wrinkles and fine lines, repairs damaged hair cuticles and reduces dandruff and frizz

LEMONGRASS ESSENTIAL OIL imparts even and glowing skin, thickens hair and adds luster

CEDARWOOD ESSENTIAL OIL tightens and tones skin, protects hair from heat damage

Q + A with Dana Jackson, Founder of Beneath Your Mask

When/how do you love to use the product?
The uses are endless, but a few of my favorite ways to use it are mixing a few drops with conditioner and sitting under the steamer or letting sit for 30 minutes. I also love to use it as a face serum or mixing a few drops into my powdered face masks for an extra boost and glow.

What inspired the product/ingredients?
Everything we put on our hair essentially gets onto our skin. Nourish was inspired by the need for a hydrating, conditioning and strengthening hair product that would double as an amazing product for your skin as well. I have really sensitive skin, and anything I put on my hair would break me out. I would literally get anxiety about working out because I didn’t want traditional hair products sweating into my skin. With Nourish, you literally have a serum that can be used on hair, face and body without causing adverse effects on any of those areas. I love a good multitasker!

How long has it been part of the line?
Since we launched in December 2016, and it was the 2nd product I created.

Can you give us some insight on the ingredient formulation process?
When formulating Nourish I wanted to include non-comedogenic oils that strengthen, hydrate and protect hair and encourage growth while also improving skin’s texture, balancing sebum, reducing acne and treating scarring.
