HOW you cook is just as important as WHAT you cook – if you want to turn back the clock on aging.
It doesn’t matter how many miles you run, how much muscle you build, or how much you starve yourself – if your cooking methods are adding to your toxic load, your skin will sag, your tissues will clump together, and your cells will age prematurely.
If you can “pinch an inch” or more of lumpy, bumpy tissue under the skin anywhere on your body (especially on the back of your neck and upper arms), then you already have an accumulation of Advanced Glycation End products, known as AGEs. These large, sugar-bound protein and fat molecules stick together and form the flabby, sagging skin on your upper arms, the extra breast tissue underneath your arms, the “pot belly” below your waist, and the mysterious lumps and bumps that pop up anywhere and seem to come out of nowhere.
AGEs are much more than just a beauty problem though. They are a sign that your liver is accumulating toxins and are associated with chronic diseases like diabetes, Alzheimer’s, heart disease, kidney failure, liver cirrhosis, and premature aging. How you cook your food and the amount of toxins your body is carrying are the two factors that contribute the most to AGE formation.
What Are AGEs?
Glycation is the name of the process that attaches sugars like fructose (from fruits) and glucose to fats and proteins in the bloodstream, without needing the help of any enzymes. These large, sticky molecules are known as AGEs, and they are aging you ahead of your time. Once formed, they clump together and accumulate in the liver and other tissues, causing inflammation and oxidative damage throughout your body. They can change the shape of certain proteins, which alters or blocks their normal functioning and leads to serious chronic diseases that affect every organ in the body – including your liver, kidneys, heart, and brain.
Low levels of AGEs are not a problem. Your body has enzymes and antioxidants that can quickly break these compounds down and render them harmless. But, when you consume too many AGEs through your diet or have high levels of toxins in your body that inhibit your ability to break AGEs down, then they start to accumulate and cause damage to everything from your immune system to your vital organs and all the way out to your skin. Men generally eliminate AGEs more easily than women, most likely due to their faster oxidation rate.
HOW You Cook Is As Important As WHAT You Cook
Diet is by far the biggest source of AGEs – even in vegetarians. And how you cook your food is just as important as whaty ou cook. If you roast, broil, grill, barbeque, fry, sauté, sear, bake, toast, brown, or use high heat in any manner to cook your food, you are creating very high levels of AGEs – regardless of what you’re cooking. And surprisingly, the dry heat that has been touted as the healthier alternative to frying, causes AGEs to form at levels 10 to 100 times what is present in uncooked foods.
Animal proteins, by themselves, are more susceptible to AGE formation than any other food. But, any food combined with sugar – like the grains used in baking – will also form high levels of AGEs. Even honey, maple syrup, fruits, fruit juices, coconut water, milk, nut milks, and sugar in any form can lead to the formation of AGEs. This is why vegetarians are not exempt from AGE accumulation.
Body Imbalances That Contribute to AGE Formation
When your body is out of balance, toxic metals accumulate, fungi thrive, deficiencies abound, and premature aging is the result. These all contribute to AGE formation:
Toxic Metals from drinking water, dental amalgams, anti-perspirants, antacids, swimming pools, and more. The process of glycation can involve toxic metals, especially fluoride, chlorine, and bromine (the halides).
Yeast and Fungal Infections create the inflammatory conditions that allow AGE formation, and their very presence is a sign that excess sugar is available for the process of glycation.
Blood Sugar Imbalances allow more AGEs to be formed in the blood, especially when blood sugar spikes after a meal.
Antioxidant Deficiency both from the diet and from our own formation decreases our defenses against AGE formation and makes it difficult for us to break them down.
Dehydration encourages the formation of AGEs, even if it’s at a chronic, low level from not drinking enough filtered water.
Can You Measure AGEs in the Body?
We can easily measure the AGE content of foods, and entire databases have been created with this information. But, it’s more difficult to measure AGE levels in the body. We don’t have a single test or panel of tests that really give us an accurate picture of our overall AGE load.
At this point, the only blood test that gives us a clue as to how much AGE we carry is the Hemoglobin A1c, and this only applies to one protein in the blood. This test tells us what percentage of the hemoglobin in your blood has been glycated (coated with sugar). For optimal longevity, set your goal of an A1c result of 5 percent or less.
In the absence of accurate overall blood testing, it’s important to look to your body for the answers. When you look in the mirror, is there anywhere – even your “double chin” and the back of your neck – that you can pinch an inch or more of rolling, sagging, or lumpy tissue? Do you have cellulite or bound fascia? These are all signs that you are accumulating AGEs, and it’s time to do something about it.
Reverse the AGE Process
AGEs are not only very damaging, but are difficult to get rid of once they start to accumulate. It’s not enough to decrease the amount coming in through your diet, you must also increase your antioxidants and support your liver. Here are the 5 steps I recommend for reversing the AGE process.
Up Your Antioxidants. Your body needs antioxidants to not only remove excess AGEs but also to balance the oxidation process in the body so they stop accumulating in the first place. Vitamins A, C, and E, along with minerals like selenium and zinc need to be plentiful not only in the diet but also supplemented through a good daily multivitamin/multimineral, like UNI KEY Health’s Male and Female Multiple.
Love Your Liver. N-acetyl cysteine, alpha lipoic acid, chlorophyll and taurine are all excellent support for a tired, toxic liver. Once your liver is back to its full detoxifying capacity, your energy will soar and your body will rid itself more easily of AGEs and associated toxic metals. Coffee enemas are another way to stimulate the detoxification and cleansing of your liver, to increase the removal of AGEs.
Marinate Your Meats. Let’s face it – summertime grilling is almost impossible to resist. Use acidic marinades that contain vinegar or citrus juices on your meat before grilling or cooking over high heat to reduce AGE production up to 50 percent. Try my Fat Flush Zesty Lime Marinade or Lemony Rosemary Marinade and substitute olive oil for an overnight marinade that will not only reduce AGEs but, as an added bonus, reduces the arachidonic acid in red meats that causes joint inflammation.
Go Low and Slow. Steaming, boiling, poaching, braising, and using a pressure cooker or slow cooker are the preferred cooking methods to reduce AGE formation. Low heat and low sugar with plenty of moisture keep foods from drying out and producing AGEs.
Cook with Clay. Cooking on ceramic surfaces instead of directly on metal also reduces AGE production. My personal favorite is my VitaClay cooker (winner of the Good Housekeeping Best Slow Cooker Award). This ancient method of cooking with clay is not only healthier, but allows for the full array of flavors to develop, and only a splash of broth, juice, or wine is needed.

It’s weight gain – not alcohol – that’s spearheading the new liver disease epidemic. And I’m sharing tools you can use to take your liver from fatty to skinny.
Alice was shocked to hear the results of her yearly physical. She was a little more tired in the afternoon lately, and bloated after meals more often, but at 50 years old and carrying a few extra pounds, she brushed it off as normal. How could she have chronic liver disease? She rarely drank alcohol.
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) is the most common chronic liver disease in the US, affecting almost 100 million people. Many people are asymptomatic, with no clue they have it until their routine blood tests show slightly elevated liver enzymes and the follow up ultrasound confirms the diagnosis. When symptoms do occur, they’re usually mild, like fatigue, nausea, bloating, abdominal pain, cellulite, leg swelling, and “brain fog,” making this a stealth disease that progresses without being noticed.
While there is no “magic pill” you can take to cure NAFLD, there are lifestyle changes you can make to support and improve the health of your liver. But before you can take your liver from fatty to skinny, you need to understand what’s going on in your liver that’s causing the disease.
Why Is My Liver Fatty?
NAFLD isn’t caused by alcohol or a virus, but is instead triggered by weight gain and insulin resistance. When your cells become resistant to insulin, the pancreas secretes more and more of it to try to get blood sugar back in balance. This creates other metabolic imbalances that lead to higher levels of fatty acids in your blood. Your liver doesn’t make enough bile to process all of this extra fat and starts storing it instead, leading to fatty liver.
A fatty liver is a toxic liver. When your bile is congested or you’re not making enough, your liver can’t process all the toxins that it encounters and becomes toxic. It then sends all the excess toxins to be stored in your fat cells. Your fat cells swell with inflammation to dilute these toxins and this slows or halts your fat-burning metabolism. Once your body fat increases, these toxins also reduce collagen formation, which leads to cellulite production.
The only way to break this vicious cycle is to make the lifestyle changes that build more bile, support the liver’s detox pathways, and reverse insulin resistance. When given the right tools through these lifestyle changes, your liver can regenerate itself. Here are my 5 simple steps to put you on the path to a healthy, skinny liver.
5 Steps to a Skinny Liver
Get the Sugar Out
Since insulin resistance started this whole mess, restoring insulin sensitivity is what will dig you out. Eliminating processed sugar of all types is essential for success. Sugar is highly addictive and it’s understandably difficult to break the habit – don’t worry, there’s help. I wrote a book entitled “Get the Sugar Out” to help you learn alternatives to your high sugar favorites both when eating at home and when dining out.
When it comes to insulin resistance and fatty liver, fructose is your enemy. Fructose has been clearly shown to cause fatty liver, using the same mechanism that alcohol does to cause liver damage. Not only is fructose found naturally in whole fruits and fruit juices, but it’s a main ingredient in soft drinks and is often hiding in everything from lunch meats and sausages to packaged seasoning mixes and juice blends. Learning to become a label sleuth and finding this hidden foe is essential to restoring health to your liver.
Build Your Bile Supply.
There nothing more important to your fat metabolism than healthy bile. It’s also essential for good fat digestion, nutrient absorption, detoxification, hormone balance, proper thyroid function, appetite suppression, and quelling those sugar cravings. In fact, Harvard University research shows that when women improve the health of their bile, their overall metabolism increases by an amazing 53 percent! It is this research that inspired my Radical Metabolism, a must-read for anyone with a sluggish metabolism, inflammatory illnesses, or issues with fat digestion.
Bile should be thin, golden, and free-flowing, with a quart or more being made every day. But, bile issues have become an epidemic, with many adults not making more than a pint of this “liquid gold” and having it quickly become thick and sludgy. Bile flow is regulated by the gallbladder, so if you’re having gallbladder symptoms or missing your gallbladder entirely, then you are sure to have insufficient bile flow.

This thwarts the progression of NAFLD and helps get your liver back on track.
Get Your Liver Skinny with Fat.
The fat that builds up in your liver is toxic and inflammatory, and anti-inflammatory essential Omega 3 and 6 fats can help quell the inflammation and reverse the vicious cycle that leads to NAFLD. Supplements like GLA-90 and Super-EPA from UNI KEY Health are excellent sources of these much needed fats. They are also found in fatty fish from pristine waters, grassfed meats, free range eggs, and organic nuts, seeds, and their oils.
Even Your Liver Needs Exercise.
Exercise not only helps you lose the weight associated with insulin resistance and NAFLD, but it directly reduces the fat in the liver. According to the 2017 European Congress on Obesity, simply exercising daily is enough to reduce fat in the liver. You don’t have to join a crossfit gym or run a marathon. Even small amounts of daily physical activity will start burning fat in the liver and helping your cells become more insulin sensitive.

Hot baths are an excellent way to reduce stress, soothe muscles, care for skin, increase feelings of wellbeing, and encourage detox.
Soaking in a hot bath isn’t just for taking off the winter chill anymore. The therapeutic benefits of bathing can help with everything from detoxing radiation exposure to staving off a flu, or simply calming your nerves for deep relaxation. Salts, herbs, and essential oils intensify the deep cleansing effects.
Your skin is a large and powerful detoxification organ. My mentor, Dr. Hazel Parcells, taught me that hot bath water draws toxins from deep within the body to the skin’s surface. As the bath water cools, the toxins are removed from the skin and eliminated into the water. The longer you soak, the more complete the detoxification process is for your body and your skin.
The two main types of baths I recommend are detox baths and aromatherapy baths. These formulas have evolved over many years of therapeutic use with my clients, and while they are safe and effective, you should consult your health care provider before using in cases of chronic illness, pregnancy, or with young children. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), baths are considered yin, and can leave people with a weaker constitution feeling drained, rather than rejuvenated.
When you help your body to expel the toxins that weaken, poison, and disrupt its functioning, you also enable it to renew itself and build resistance to future toxic invaders. The therapeutic baths in this section are adaptations of formulas taught to me by Dr. Parcells. She was a pioneer of alternative medicine who managed to overcome “terminal” tuberculosis in the 1930s, and went on to live another healthy, vibrant 50 years. She passed away at the age of 106, more active than many of her colleagues and friends who were half her age.
Do not mix any of these baths together, and do not exceed one bath per day. I have found that taking one of these baths shortly before going to bed is ideal for the optimum relaxation and detoxification, and coincides with when TCM recommends yin therapies like bathing.
For Jet Lag and Radiation. For air travel, excessive cell phone use, X-ray examinations, CT scan, mammogram, radiation therapy, or simply living within 100 miles of a nuclear plant.
Run a tub to the hottest temperature you can manage. Dissolve 1 pound of sea salt or rock salt and 1 pound of baking soda into the water, and begin to soak.
Sip a glass of warm water mixed with ½ teaspoon of rock salt and ½ teaspoon of baking soda.
Get out of the bath when the water is cool. Don’t shower for at least four hours.
For Food Poisoning or Irradiated Food. If you’re suffering from food-borne bacteria, like E. coli or salmonella, this bath may provide some relief. If you buy your food from a supermarket, chances are it’s been irradiated with Cobalt 60, a nuclear waste material, which helps protect against the bacteria that cause food poisoning. All kinds of foods are irradiated, from spices to fruits, vegetables, grains, and even meats.
Run a tub to the hottest temperature you can manage. Pour in two pounds of baking soda.
Sip a glass of warm water mixed with ½ teaspoon of baking soda.
Get out of the bath when the water is cool. Don’t shower for at least four hours.
To Build Immunity and Fend Off Viruses. This all-purpose detoxifying bath is especially good for when you feel like you may be coming down with something like a cold or the flu. It helps build immunity by raising your body’s acidity at the cellular level, which makes you less hospitable terrain for most bacteria and viruses to grow.
Run a tub to the hottest temperature you can manage. Pour in 2 cups of organic apple cider vinegar.
Sip a glass of warm water mixed with 1 tablespoon organic apple cider vinegar.
Get out of the bath when the water is cool. Don’t shower for at least four hours.
For Metal Poisoning or Carbon Monoxide Exposure. A mild (or not so mild) case of metal poisoning is not as uncommon as you may think. For example, the aluminum in cookware, antiperspirant, and antacids can accumulate in your body, as can the mercury leaching from your silver amalgam dental fillings. This bath is also good for removing the carbon monoxide you inhale while commuting in heavy traffic or living in a congested downtown area. It also works well for the remnants of pesticides that often contain heavy metal residues.
Run a tub to the hottest temperature you can bear.
Pour ½ cup of regular Clorox bleach with Cloromax into the tub. This amount of bleach in this volume of water will not harm your skin, but do not exceed this amount.
Remain in the bath until the water is cool. Don’t shower for at least four hours.
Aromatherapy bathing helps to open the pores of the skin and stimulate lymph flow while releasing toxins through perspiration, and the oils are absorbed through the skin and inhaled through your nose, which reaches the brain quickly to stimulate deep relaxation. Essential oils are distilled from flowers, leaves, and roots of wild or organically grown plants, and each has a different effect on your body and your health. Benefits include reduced water retention and fat deposits, reduced cortisol levels, reduced muscle soreness, and increased beneficial deep sleep.
It’s important to check the label when buying essential oils. The label should state that it has been gas chromatograph/mass spectrometer (GC/MS) analyzed to ensure safety and effectiveness. This is really the only way to know that they are high quality and do not include any petrochemicals, fractions of cheaper oils, synthetic fragrance, or other degrading chemicals.
I recommend adding ten drops of an essential oil to a hot bath and soaking for twenty minutes (at the end of the day). You can combine oils but do not use more than a total of ten drops. During winter, try using oils such as rose and lavender that will help reduce cravings and stress, or rosemary that can help reduce muscular aches, pains, and even arthritis. Other favorites of mine include:
Sandalwood—promotes inner calm, helping to offset stress and relax the adrenals; encourages deeper sleep
Keto is not a one-size-fits-all diet – especially where women are concerned.
The Keto craze has taken the diet world by storm, and even some of America’s most popular doctors are on board. Joseph Mercola, MD, Josh Axe, DC, and Eric Berg, DC are singing the praises of the severely carb-restricted and high fat keto diet and how much weight people are losing. And while it’s true that many women are experiencing dramatic weight loss, there is an astounding number of women who aren’t.
If you find yourself among the women who are experiencing fatigue, bloating, hair loss, constipation, insomnia, stalled weight loss and more, you’ve likely been told it’s insulin resistance or adrenal fatigue – not keto. While those are common causes of these issues, there’s more they’re not telling you about what keto is doing to your body, and why women are struggling with it.
Women are not at a metabolic disadvantage. There’s nothing inherently wrong with your body that keeps you from losing weight or responding to a high fat, severely carb-restricted diet like keto. Over my 4 decades in the field of nutrition, I’ve met countless women like you, who feel like their weight won’t budge – matter what they try. Fortunately – for them and for you – I’ve done the research and unlocked the secrets to healthy, lasting weight loss for even the slowest of losers. But, before we get into that, let’s look at what keto really does to a woman’s body.
Carbs Are Not Your Worst Enemy
If you are on the keto diet and find yourself irritable, tired, and feeling like you can’t handle stress of any kind, then your body may be trying to tell you it needs more healthy carbs. You are likely in what I call hormone havoc – your stress hormones, sex hormones, thyroid hormones, and blood sugar balancing hormones are all out of whack and crying out for the nutrient-rich carbs they need.
Women, more than men, need low glycemic, nutrient-rich, complex carbs to keep hormone levels steady and balanced. Your digestion needs more fiber-rich carbs to keep it moving consistently, and your body is so busy breaking everything down from being in ketosis that it’s even breaking down lean muscle mass – the very thing you are trying to build.
The right carbs are not your mortal enemy. One thing I’ve learned over the past 40 years studying nutrition is that successful, healthy weight loss does not come from eliminating an entire food group from your diet. When I started in this field, the low fat craze was just building momentum, and I saw many women become obese and suffer with diabetes and heart disease. I’ve watched the low fat wave crest and then fall with emerging research that proved we need fats for brain health and so much more.
Fats have now gone from super-villain to superhero, so we looked for a new villain to fill the void – carbs. The problem is, when you go very low carb, your body thinks it’s starving. This starvation mode is the very thing that triggers the release of ketones and causes you to lose weight – but your hormone balance suffers as a result.
Keto Causes Hormone Havoc
Here’s the “Catch 22” with keto – the very mechanism that causes your body to dramatically shed weight also slows the production of all of your important hormones. The hypothalamus in your brain controls your hormone balance. When your carb intake is low, your body sees that as a type of starvation and this causes the hypothalamus to send signals that lower several types of hormones, creating hormone havoc throughout your body:
Sex hormones: Estrogen, progesterone and testosterone levels drop, causing changes to your monthly cycle, decrease in your libido, increase in belly fat, mood swings, fatigue, decrease fertility, and so much more. These hormones also affect your blood sugar balance and your stress hormone production, because they all feedback to the hypothalamus and interact with each other. This causes a cascade that leads to worse hormone havoc.
Thyroid hormones: Your thyroid gland is the master regulator of your metabolism, and produces several hormones that have a dramatic effect on the speed and efficiency of your metabolism. When your carb intake drops too low, the hypothalamus signals your thyroid to decrease the production of T3, an important metabolic regulating hormone. It also signals the conversion of T3 into reverse T3, which puts your metabolism into “hibernation mode,” where everything slows down and what you eat is stored as fat, with very few calories used for energy production.
Blood Sugar Balancing hormones: When you lower your carb intake, your insulin and leptin levels drop accordingly. When these drop into the normal range, you experience healthy weight loss, but dropping too much causes problems, especially when it comes to insulin.
Insulin is crucial for maintaining muscle mass. When insulin drops with carb restriction, it triggers you to break down muscle to release the sugars stored as glycogen inside of them, to be used for fuel. The end result is loss of lean muscle mass, which is what you actually want to be building when you lose weight. Healthy carb intake is the difference between being in a catabolic state, where everything is being broken down, and an anabolic state, where your muscles are being fed and built up.
Stress hormones: A carb-restricted diet like keto is stressful for your body not only because of the starvation mode it activates, but also because of the cascade of hormone-lowering reactions it causes. If you don’t get enough carbs while under stress, your stress hormone production goes up – as long as you have enough nutrients to meet the higher production needs. But, stress hormones like cortisol need nutrient-rich carbs to be produced in adequate amounts.
When stress hormone production suffers, so does your immunity, and you become susceptible to colds, flus, and worse immune issues. Stress hormone balance is tricky, and hormones like cortisol feedback to the hypothalamus, sending signals that worsen the hormone havoc already happening from carb restriction. You develop what’s called adrenal fatigue, which is where that wired-but-tired feeling comes from that makes you feel tired during the day and awake at night, unable to sleep.
Your Digestion Needs Carbs
If you’ve experienced bloating, constipation, or IBS-type symptoms while on keto, your body is telling you it needs more fiber-rich carbs. The fiber in healthy carbs not only provides the bulk you need for healthy bowel movements, it also binds toxins and sweeps them out like “nature’s broom” to eliminate them from your body.
These fiber-rich carbs also feed the healthy bacteria in your gut microbiome. Researchers have found that there are bacteria strains that signal you to gain weight. These bacteria are found in abundance in the digestive tracts of people who are experiencing famine, as a protective mechanism to keep them from starving. Feeding your healthy probiotic bacteria the carbs they need to increase their population, not only helps them to crowd out the unhealthy and fat-promoting strains of bacteria, but also boosts your immune system.

When Do I Fat Flush and When Do I Get Radical?
I’ve been asked a lot about when to use which plan for the best success. Some people have said the Fat Flush Plan is like getting a thorough detailing and “once over” of your car while Radical Metabolism is like getting an engine overhaul and a deep steam cleaning. The good news is you really can’t go wrong with either plan, and Radical Metabolism and the Fat Flush Plan work well together!
When you need to get your weight loss started or your health back on track, you can start with either the 3-Day Fat Flush Cleanse and move into Phase 1 of the Fat Flush Plan, or you can do the Radical Metabolism 4-Day Radical Intensive Cleanse and move into the 21-Day Radical Reboot.
If you move forward through the Fat Flush phases and you reach a weight loss plateau, consider switching over to Radical Metabolism to do more intensive detective work on the toxins that are slowing your metabolism down. If you bloat after meals, your energy is lagging, you crave sweets, and those extra pounds just won’t budge – despite your best dieting efforts – then it’s time to take a look at your liver.
Liver health is the hot topic in health news. In fact, First for Women magazine interviewed me on this very important topic for their issue that is out on newsstands right now. The health of your whole body is tied to the health of your liver. If your liver is sluggish and your bile is congested, every organ in your body will be affected and your health and weight loss efforts will be thwarted from all sides.
Your liver is your body’s primary detoxification organ, and it’s being bombarded with toxins and chemicals both from within your cells and from your outside environment. Medications; heavy metals and chemicals in your air, water, food, cosmetics, and personal care products; refined sugars and grains in your diet; eating unhealthy fats, like processed vegetable oils along with too little fiber; indulging in too much alcohol or caffeine; lack of exercise; and even emotional stress – your liver takes quite a beating from all of this, resulting in congested bile.
More than 80 percent of women over age 40 are packing on pounds because of thick, congested bile – the digestive liquid your liver makes to break down dietary fats – and this is why you’re tired, bloated, and cravings are through the roof.
Bile is a Big Deal
When it comes to reversing a toxic metabolism and losing stubborn body fat, nothing is more important than bile. Harvard University research shows that when women improve their bile health, their overall metabolism increases by a whopping 53 percent!
Bile is “liquid gold” – this emulsifying yellow-colored substance, similar to soap or detergent, breaks down fats so they can dissolve in liquid and be more easily absorbed, and that’s not all. Healthy bile is essential for detoxification, proper hormone balance, healthy thyroid function, good digestion, fat metabolism, absorbing essential Omega 3 and Omega 6 fats, absorbing fat-soluble vitamins, and reducing appetite and sugar cravings.
Did going Keto or Paleo leave you feeling bloated and tired? Your bile flow could be to blame. Bile becomes thick, sludgy, and congested, and stops flowing freely because of toxin overload, clogged bile ducts, excess cholesterol and fats, high blood sugar and insulin resistance, gallbladder inflammation, or lack of nutrients needed to create quality bile.
Bile should be thin, golden, and free-flowing, and your liver should be making more than a quart a day, with its flow being regulated by your gallbladder. But, if you’re having gallbladder symptoms or missing your gallbladder, this by itself can also derail your bile production. Once bile is flowing better, it breaks down estrogen to be eliminated, bringing hormones back into balance so you can say bye-bye to belly fat. Better bile flow also triggers an increase in the conversion from inactive to active thyroid hormone, improving thyroid function and switching the body into fat-burning mode. More bile also means more toxins removed, which means better health overall.
To get the slim-stimulating, toxin-removing, hormone balancing effects of bile back and wake your metabolism up from its winter hibernation, turn to the bitter greens of spring. Just tasting these bitter foods is enough to also cut cravings and keep your appetite in check.
Bitters Build Better Bile
Some of the most powerful healing foods that help us detoxify our cells and absorb essential nutrients are in the class of foods we call “bitters.” Bitter foods like spring greens (dandelion, arugula, watercress, baby kale, and broccoli rabe), coffee, cacao, cabbage, ginger, grapefruit, peppermint, and so many more, set off a chain reaction that:
Gets your digestive juices flowing – saliva, pepsin, gastrin, and pancreatic enzymes – for better digestion and absorption of nutrients

All of which are key components of losing weight and getting healthy. But, if you are part of the 25 percent of the adult population who has Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD), there are a few more steps you need to take to get your liver health back on track.
From Fatty Liver to Skinny Liver
If you’ve been diagnosed with NAFLD, then your liver has stopped processing fat and started storing it. A fatty liver is a toxic liver. Without enough bile, your liver can’t process all the toxins it encounters and it becomes toxic. It shuttles the excess toxins off to be stored in your fat cells, causing these cells to swell with inflammation and bringing your fat burning to a screeching halt. To make matters worse, these toxins also promote cellulite by increasing body fat and reducing collagen formation.
You can break this vicious cycle and support the health of your liver with these 5 steps:
Get Bitters. Bitter foods are a great start to restoring liver health because of the chain reaction of healing effects they set off that lead to better bile production and flow. Once bile is flowing better, it will flush out the toxins your liver collects so they can be eliminated rather than stored.
Get Moving. According to the 2017 European Congress on Obesity, daily exercise alone will reduce fat in the liver. You don’t have to run a marathon – even small amounts of daily physical activity will start burning fat in the liver.
Get the Sugar Out. When it comes to fatty liver, the fructose found in fruit juices, whole fruits, and foods or drinks with high fructose corn syrup are your worst enemy. Fructose has been clearly shown to cause fatty liver, using the same mechanism that alcohol does to cause the damage. You’ll need to become a label reader, because fructose is hiding in everything from lunch meats to sausages, packaged seasoning mixes and so much more.
Fight Fat with Fat. The fat that builds up in the liver causes inflammation, and anti-inflammatory fats in our diet can help turn this process around. The essential fats found in fatty fish from pristine waters, grassfed meats, nuts, seeds and their oils all build health from the cellular level and quell inflammation.
Supplement with Liver Healing Herbs. Toxins accumulate in the liver before fat does, and this leads to weight gain, fatigue, joint pains, digestive problems, headaches, and even cardiovascular disease. We all have those nagging little daily problems that are enough to bother us, but not enough to seek out medical help for. Longer, Thicker Eyelashes, Naturally
Those mascaras and lash-lengthening products you’ve been using could be causing more harm than good. Before you leave your house in the morning, you’ve already been exposed to more than 100 chemicals from your cosmetics, soaps, and other personal care products, according to the Harvard School of Public Health. The toxic load you are exposed to day after day adds up quickly and can have a lasting impact on your health – these chemical exposures have been linked to everything from breast cancer to asthma and autism.
Fortunately, there’s castor oil. Cold-pressed, organic castor oil applied to clean eyelashes before bed each night is an age-old remedy for thicker, healthier lashes that grow faster and resist breakage. The secret is in the fatty acids present in the oil that absorb easily and nourish all the way to the roots. You can use either an eyeliner brush or cotton swab for application, and it’s effective on eyebrows as well. Castor oil is sticky though, and will feel heavy if applied too thick.
Clear, Healthy Eyes: Relief From Floaters
Have you ever opened your eyes to see dark specks or strings moving across your field of vision, only to see them dart away when you blink? I’ve had many clients come to me concerned these are parasites, but these are actually floaters, a common problem as we age. The round shape of your eye is created by its vitreous fluid, which fills about 80 percent of the eye, and it shrinks as we age and gets stringy, which casts shadows and creates floaters.
I personally use Dexterity Health brand liquid MSM drops – just one drop in each eye a few times daily is all it takes. MSM has been shown to remove tissue particles and floaters, while repairing damaged tissues and improving circulation in the eye. This allows nutrients to pass through more easily, so those vitamins you’ve been taking for issues like macular degeneration can reach the tissues that need them.
Indigestion and Irritable Bowel Help
One of Russia’s best-kept health secrets has been Siberian Pine Nut Oil. This oil has long been studied and used there for digestive issues, from acid reflux to peptic ulcers, liver issues and irritable bowel. Rich in essential Omega 6 fats, amino acids, vitamin E, phosphorus, calcium, magnesium, manganese, copper, zinc, cobalt, and iodine, Siberian Pine Nut oil is chock full of nutrients known for their digestive healing properties.
One bottle of pure Siberian Pine Nut oil is usually all that’s needed to see improvement. Trace Minerals for Tendonitis
For most people, eating a balanced, healthy diet full of nutrient-rich vegetables and essential fats is enough to keep tendons healthy and strong. But if your tendons are inflamed from exercise or repetitive strain, you may need more vitamin and mineral support. There are specific vitamins and trace minerals that are essential for the health of both tendons and ligaments.
Tendons and ligaments are made primarily from collagen, which needs vitamins A and C for healthy production, formation and function. Foods rich in vitamin A include oily fish, liver, grassfed cheeses and butter. The metabolism of collagen also relies on the trace minerals manganese, copper, and zinc. Your Feelings About Food Influence Your Fat Loss
I read this study a few years ago that had a tremendous impact on how I viewed dieting. Researchers asked Americans what emotion they associated with chocolate cake. The overwhelming answer – guilt. My guess is many of you reading this would agree.
Then they asked the French what emotion they associate with chocolate cake. Their answer may surprise you – celebration. The study went further and showed that people who associate decadent treats like chocolate cake with guilt and loss of control were less successful at maintaining or losing weight over an 18-month period than people who associated it with celebration and joy.
I took this a step further and came to the realization that diets that don’t incorporate celebration and the foods we enjoy and consider treats are doomed to fail, because of how strongly our emotions are tied to our food. Comments like the one I overheard in the restaurant really show how we feel deep down about going on a diet – like it’s all work and no play.
