When this occurs, an engine will run at a higher temperature than normal. Over time, this could lead to the engine overheating. A thermostat is present in an engine that records the coolant’s temperature. If the temperature gets too high, then a signal will be sent to your gauge. If an individual is driving and notices the temperature of the coolant reading too high, then it is important he or she pulls over and allows the the engine to cool. If an individual continues to drive, it could cause the engine to overheat.
A Thermostat Goes Bad
Another factor that can lead to radiator problems is if a thermostat fails. Although the thermostat is not part of the radiator, it is vital in helping the radiator function properly. The thermostat is one of the most common factors that leads to an engine overheating. If the thermostat fails, then the vehicle will start to overheat at a rapid pace.
Air is Present in the Cooling System
There are instances when air can become trapped in the cooling system. If this occurs, then it will prevent the coolant from flowing properly, which will result in the coolant not working like it should. If a vehicle is running hot due to trapped air, then a mechanic can remove air bubbles that accumulated in the cooling system.
The Water Pump Fails
If a water pump fails, then the cooling system will not be able to pump the coolant throughout the engine and regulate the temperature properly. This unique landmark demonstrates the creativity of car lovers. It also suggests a close connection sometimes exists between modern art and popular culture.
If you’ve considered planning a summer vacation out West this year, you may want to pay a visit to an unusual site erected by an artist as a tribute to his late father. Free to visit, this memorial today draws visitors from around the world. Large numbers of tourists will travel there to view a solar eclipse on August 21, 2017.
A Modern Tribute to The Past
Carhenge provides an exact replica of a famous ancient British landmark called “Stonehenge”. Artist and engineer Jim Reinders and his family members created it from automobiles. They used the bodies of the vehicles in lieu of stones.
The monument sits in the middle of an empty farm field just a short distance north of the small town of Alliance, Nebraska. Located in the far western portion of the Cornhusker State in a rural location, the interesting site remains open to the public on an admission-free basis during daylight hours throughout the year.
An Unusual Landmark
In 2017, Carhenge will celebrate its 30th anniversary. Some 35 members of the Reinders family erected the monument in 1987 in honor of Jim Reinders’ late father, who had once farmed in that spot. They used 39 automobiles to mimic the large boulders forming Stonehenge, arranging them in a circle and placing car bodies in the site of specific central stones still visible at the ancient Druid monument. The builders buried upright vehicles trunk-first in deep pits of earth, and welded overarching autos and trucks in place to form a permanent memorial. To help safeguard the structure from rust and enhance the resemblance to Stonehenge, the Reinder family eventually spray-painted all of the vehicles in gray. They also made a point of using only American-manufactured auto bodies in the current landmark.
Over the course of time, other artists donated pieces of car body art to a nearby portion of the site called the “Car Art Reserve”. Some of these works depict natural themes, such as the changing seasons of the year. Jim Reinders eventually donated the location to a preservation group called “Friends of Carhenge”, who in turn entrusted the attraction to the Citizens of Alliance in 2013.
Interestingly, other artists in the past built similar reconstructions of Stonehenge using vehicles. For instance, William Lishman also relied on auto bodies to mimic the ancient monument when he constructed “Autohenge” in Canada in 1986. Sadly, afflicted by severe weather which rusted the metal, his work suffered demolition in 2001.
From 1996 through 1997, a traveling display called “Dubhenge” consisting entirely of scrapped Volkwagens arranged in a Stonehenge-like pattern visited several cities in the British Isle. Originally built for a summer solstice celebration at a racetrack, the art work drew enthusiastic crowds from Glastonbury to Leeds. Today Carhenge outside tiny Alliance, Nebraska has become the longest-lasting car art replica of Stonehenge. It draws around 60,000 visitors annually.

In the past, it was not unusual for even brand-new cars to drip oil, antifreeze or other liquids onto the garage floor beneath them. However, for both safety and efficiency reasons, modern engines only leak fluids when something is wrong with them. Therefore, it’s a good idea to keep a fresh piece of white cardboard under your engine and transmission and check it regularly for the appearance of stains. If such stains appear, replace the cardboard, and if they reappear, it means you’ll need to start looking for a leak. It’s important that the cardboard is fresh, since small amounts of oil, gunk, grime and other road mess will always accumulate under the car and then drip off over time, and are not necessarily indicative of a failed gasket. Likewise, you can’t expect the leak to appear as a noticeable puddle, especially if it is of a low viscosity liquid such as gear grease or axle grease.
When you find a worn or destroyed gasket, there is a high likelihood that you will be able to replace it yourself, or that it will be relatively inexpensive. Most gaskets cost only a few dollars and are designed to be easily replaced with standard tools. Some will be harder to reach, and it may be necessary to hire a mechanic for those located in and near the engine bay, but the primary cost will be labor, not parts. Replacing these gaskets when they get worn will prevent damage due to lack of lubrication, the growth of mildew in undesirable places, and even many electrical problems.
