This month we had the pleasure of interviewing one of our talented cosmetology instructors, Kristine Marcum. She’s a wizard with hair color and has a tangible passion for the beauty industry. She’s an integral part of the AIB family, and makes a noticeable impact on the lives of our students. We hope you enjoy hearing her story and getting to know her as much as we did!
The Journey to Cosmetology
Kristine was first introduced to the idea of attending cosmetology school when she was in high school. She had the opportunity to tour a local cosmetology school, and it excited her about a career in the world of beauty. Kristine had always been playing with hair and makeup, and wanted to turn her favorite past time into a career. Before completing a cosmetology program, she attended two different modeling schools because she was still trying to find her area of interest. During that time, instructors always remarked about how excellent her hair and makeup work was. Once she got started in cosmetology, Kristine was one of the quickest students to begin excelling!
In her professional career, Kristine has continued to learn at every opportunity and sharpen her skills. Her industry experience is wide and extensive, covering all sorts of cosmetology fields, from hair color to makeup. She has moved around the country many times, experiencing new and exciting things along the way. She was an educator for L’oreal when it only did color, and has since become an expert in all things hair color!
Kristine’s Role at AIB
Kristine has been educating at AIB for two years as the cosmetology phase two instructor on the salon floor. She is passionate about grooming new people to come into this industry. She always says she wants to teach students so well that she would want to hire them. Kristine has been doing hair for 30 year, so she shares her passion and dedication every day with her students. She loves that you can always learn something new in the beauty industry, and our hope is that our students can pick up that attitude from her. Kristine has also been trained and certified in eyelash extensions through Bella Lash, and now teaches this elective to students who would like to become certified themselves in this area of the beauty industry.
Why Kristine Loves AIB
When asked what she loves most about AIB, the first thing Kristine mentioned is the people that she works with. She loves that the AIB staff works together to make decisions and set goals by collaborating on how to make the school better. She also enjoys the level of individual freedom she is given as an instructor. She feels like there is a good balance between personal and group decision making. Coming together and making changes is what AIB is striving for, and Kristine loves being a part of it. She also enjoys the diversity of people at the school, from their origins to the way they perform beauty services.

Cosmetology is a field with many career options, but just how many are there? Cosmetologists often graduate from beauty school with education in hair styling, esthetics, barbering, manicuring, and even makeup. The career possibilities as a cosmetologist are numerous, and can be categorized based on what you’re most interested in. If you love hair, you can work with hair. If you are passionate about skincare, you can work with skin. Here are some of the most popular career options that cosmetologists can choose to dive into:
Cosmetology is most frequently associated with the cutting, styling, or coloring of hair, and that’s because most cosmetology programs focus more heavily on hair than any other topic. If hair is your passion, there are a number of hair specialist roles you could consider for your career:
If there’s something you love to do, embrace it! High-end salons frequently hire color, style, blowout, or perm specialists who spend most of their time perfecting their respective services. Hair colorists in particular are popular because of the way they can mix color and create stunning looks with a masterful touch. If there’s something you love most about styling hair, make a career out of it!
The world of esthetics is constantly growing and developing new services to help skin look healthy and young. Esthetics also provides a similar diversity of services that estheticians can specialize in. Here are just a few of the most common ones:
Hair removal specialist
Lash extension specialist
Cosmetologists can usually have the opportunity to learn basic esthetics during their beauty school program, so some of these services may require additional training or certification to perform in your state. Services like lash extensions are booming, so it’s not uncommon for licensed estheticians to spend most of their time performing lash extensions if that’s a service they choose to specialize in. Just choose which service you enjoy performing the most and perfect it!
Cosmetology graduates can have many opportunities that extend beyond performing services behind the chair. Many people pursue and education in cosmetology because they want to get involved with the business world within cosmetology. Here are some common career goals that business-minded cosmetology graduates set for themselves:
Manage a salon or spa
Start a beauty product line
Own a salon or beauty school
When it comes to the business side of cosmetology, the world is yours to take by storm! It’s not uncommon for beauty school graduates to manage or open their own businesses and help them succeed. If what you want is to control your business and create a legacy that people fall in love with, you can consider cosmetology as the foundation you need to get started.
American Institute of Beauty, Inc. couldn’t be where it is now without the support of our incredible staff, so we want to share a little about them and what they are doing for the school! We had the opportunity to talk with our clinical skincare program instructor at the Largo campus, Toni Winkley, about her professional journey and experience. She had incredible things to share, and her story is just one example of how you can take a beauty education and turn it into a lifelong career!
The Journey to Skincare
Toni enrolled in beauty school right out of high school. She started at a community college learning nails roughly 26 years ago. She worked as a nail technician for a while, before enrolling in beauty school again after deciding she wanted to learn even more about cosmetology. During her time in the program, she discovered that she had a passion and love for skincare. Over time she enrolled in as many advanced skincare courses as she could find. From microdermabrasion to micro-current, she wanted to learn it all!
Toni’s Role at AIB
Toni was referred to AIB by a friend of hers who works at the school, and was brought on to the team as the clinical skincare program instructor. The program offers much of the training and certification that Toni worked to collect over the years in one convenient program. With her breadth of experience, it would be hard to find someone more suited to teach our program than Toni! She brings a wealth of personal experience as a well-trained clinical skincare specialist, and she strives to pass that along to her students.
The program that Toni teaches is rich with skills and information you can learn to become a diversified and talented skincare specialist. The program is 720 hours in total length, beginning with 300 hours in basic esthetics with the remaining hours in the advanced program. Toni strives to make sure the program is up to date with the latest techniques and products so our students can be prepared to work for the Dermatology and Plastic Surgeon medical practices and professional medi-spas in the area.
About Clinical Skincare
Toni teaches the Clinical Skin Care program at American Institute of Beauty campus in Largo, FL. This program is designed to help students prepare for careers in clinical esthetics, which goes beyond basic esthetics training. Students can learn about treatments such as microdermabrasion, LED light therapy, chemical peels, as well as pre and post-surgical skin care treatments and more. Our class sizes are small, so you can get the individualized education you need to be successful.
Why Toni Loves AIB
American Institute of Beauty, Inc. is a cosmetology school with a huge focus on teamwork. Toni specifically loves that she can start building that teamwork mentality with her students from day one. This can really benefit our esthetics students throughout their careers because they can continue to work together after graduation. If they have referrals, want to open a business, or anything else then our students have that foundation of teamwork they can rely on! Working together can help beauty professionals cultivate their clientele, become more talented individuals, and do more than they could on their own!
This spirit of teamwork starts from the top of the organization and works its way through the entire school. Toni says that she loves being a part of the AIB team because we all work together. If someone is having a bad day, the team comes together to support and encourage that individual. Members of the AIB team are given a great deal of independence as well, placing value in the unique things that each team member brings to the school and letting them focus in on that talent.
Advice For Future Students
If beauty school is something that you’re interested in pursuing, Toni says you should keep your clients in mind:
Join this career because you want to help people, because if you want to help people then you can do well. Esthetics is really about caring about other people and their feelings and their confidence.”
We couldn’t agree more with Toni! Esthetics is a field where you can help others to feel happy and look their best. People can tell if you don’t genuinely care, so if you want to be successful it’s important to feel passionately about other people!

It’s a new year, meaning it could be high time for a new you. One of the biggest sources of dissatisfaction in our lives often stem from our jobs. When you’re stuck in a work rut, you can feel trapped and despondent. The start of the year is the ideal time to get a fresh start with a rewarding new career.
When you’ve been at a job for a long time, you may feel as though you have to stick it out. But if you’re unhappy and there’s no room for growth, then why are you prolonging the misery? There’s a good chance that you thought the career was a good fit at one point in your life, but people change. Switching careers can open up new opportunities and allow you to find true satisfaction in your line of work.
Focus on the Positive
Instead of focusing on the negatives about a career switch, be proactive. Develop a plan on how you can make your new career happen. What skills do you have that will work well in the field? What type of training is required? Make goals and set deadlines. Don’t assume because the career is in a different industry that you don’t have something to offer. For instance, if you worked in customer service for years and decide to become a stylist, you’ll already have a knack for working well with others.
Test the Waters
Changing careers is scary, but you don’t have to dive in head first right away. Is your new career a job that you do on the side at first? Maybe you can start the career as a second job, by working weekends and evenings. Not only will you have a side income, you can start gaining experience in the new field before working in the industry full-time. By starting on a part-time basis, you’re also giving yourself a chance to figure out if the new career is all that you hoped it would be. But don’t be surprised if you encounter bumps in the road. With any new career there’s a learning curve, and you will get through it.
Start fresh for the new year and leave work stresses in the past. The American Institute of Beauty can help you launch your new career in the beauty industry. Our programs include training and certification in cosmetology, skin care, nail technology, and more. Visit our website today to learn more about the programs at our Florida locations.
