It’s been sometime since our last round up of happenings on the Edges & Sledges Cricket Podcast. We’ve been busy and since our last update in March, IPL 2019 has finished, the ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 has started, Edges & Sledges has re-branded, joined India’s largest podcast network (the IVM podcast network) and released a dozen episodes all while taking a break between the IPL and the World Cup. Oh and yes, we’ve also interviewed our first ever international cricket captain. Read on!
Varun is back on the podcast this week and joins Ashwin and DJ to discuss the “damp squib” IPL 2019 opener CSK v RCB and the first double header of the year – KKR v SRH and MI v DD.
We focus this week on the Delhi Capitals and discuss their fielding. batting and bowling in their win against the Mumbai Indians. We also discuss our suggested changes to the Delhi Capitals XI going forward.
Finally, if you are playing fantasy cricket in our league, we wrap up with a fantasy update.
IPL 2019 had an explosive first week with the Ashwin-Buttler Mankad followed closely by two no balls – one that was called by the umpires and one that was not. It also had three centuries (Samson, Warner, Bairstow), a 99 (Prithivi Shaw) and a super over (DC v KKR) Ashwin and DJ cover all the highlights (and lowlights) from matches 4-12. They also speak to Gauravi Shah, a Mumbai Indians fan, about everything from the selection of Yuvraj Singh instead of Ishan Kishan to which Pandya she would choose. She also responds to selected listener tweets. Finally, we round up the Edges & Sledges fantasy league after the first 12 games. [Link to DJ’s chat with the Cricket Badger Radio show is here if you want to hear his reaction on the day of the Mankad]
DJ and Varun discuss the big talking points from the second week of IPL 2019 (matches 13 to 21). From the Delhi Capitals’ incredible collapse against Kings XI Punjab to Dhoni’s non-mankad against Mumbai Indians to Andre Russell’s insane assault on RCB – it’s all on this week’s show!
We also speak to Alok Prasanna Kumar, the RCB superfan, about the franchise’s poor start to this year’s IPL and what issues the Bengaluru team must address to become real contenders in future seasons. Also Virat Kohli’s captaincy comes under close scrutiny.
Last but not the least, an IPL fantasy league update and some thoughts from the podcasters on this year’s format and the Dream 11 platform.
This week we have a bumper episode where Varun and Ashwin discuss with Kings XI Punjab superfan Rohan Narula all the happenings from the third week of IPL 2019. Was Dhoni right to storm out on the field? Is Ashwin a good captain? Can KXIP make the IPL 2019 playoffs? The answers to all those questions (and more) are on this week’s show! Also fantasy tips are back for those playing.
In the second half of the show, Varun, Ashwin and DJ react to the Indian World Cup squad of 15 that was announced on 15 April, discussing the big calls made by the BCCI and the selectors.
Varun, Ashwin and DJ are back with an update from the IPL’s fourth week. They discuss the big movers and shakers of the week and follow-up on last week’s Indian World Cup squad announcement. The podcast also focusses on the Pant v Kartik debate and the other surprising omissions/inclusions in World Cup squads. Varun wraps the first half up with his fantasy cricket tips, which include some paternity stalking plans.
The second half of the podcast has Siddharth Poddar aka Pod on as the Rajasthan Royals superfan of the week. We discuss the highs and lows of RR’s campaign this IPL and why they insist on paying a king’s ransom for Jaydev Unadkat.
Ashwin and DJ are back with an update from week five of IPL 2019 (matches 39-47). It’s been a week of keepers with Dhoni nearly getting 26 off the last over to take CSK home against RCB, Parthiv scoring a direct hit to win the game, Rishabh Pant scoring a superb 78* against RR and Dinesh Karthik scoring 97* against RR as well. We also talk about the Dinda Academy controversy, Virat Kohli’s reaction after catching Ravichandran Ashwin and Andre Russell airing KKR’s dirty laundry. We end the first half of the podcast with our delighted reactions to Delhi Capitals qualifying for the playoffs, qualification scenarios and an IPL fantasy cricket update.
The second half of the show is all about the Sunrisers Hyderabad with superfan Akshay Sarma. He gives us his views on, amongst other things, the Warner-Bairstow bromance, Rashid Khan’s issues, Bhuvi’s form, the Sid Kaul dilemma and SRH’s chances of qualifying for the play-offs. Most importantly he clarifies why Yusuf Pathan was picked in the team. We round up the show with a fantasy cricket tip from Akshay, who won the IPL fantasy league we played last year.
Varun and Ashwin are back with an update from week six of IPL 2019 (matches 48-55). It’s been a week of lasts, with RCB, RR and KXIP bowing out of the tournament, as well as lots of international players saying goodbye to the tournament. We also talk about the incredible Super Over between SRH and MI, the rain curtailed game betweeen RCB and RR, the importance of Net Run Rate, and which players will be missed in the playoffs.

IPL 2019 fever reaches its climax and Varun, Ashwin and DJ are here to re-live the thrills and spills of MI v CSK (Qualifier 1), DC v SRH (Eliminator) and CSK v DC (Qualifier 2). On this episode, Varun, Ashwin and DJ come back after the breathtaking IPL season to talk about the elephant in the room: ICC Cricket World Cup! We have released 5 episodes since our last round-up. The last two are special episodes on Indian domestic cricket and women’s cricket with some really good people so please make sure you have a listen.
In this episode, we bring you a special interview focused on all things about the world of Women’s Cricket. We are joined by Annesha Ghosh, journalist at ESPN Cricinfo, who has been covering women’s cricket in great depth. We talk about:
Evolution of the women’s game in the past 20-30 years
How did Cricket Australia become the best in class at promoting the women’s game
The impact of the WBBL
Team India and the outstanding batters and spinners
Who is in the wings to step up when Jhulan Goswami retires?
The amazing Smriti Mandhana takes India home vs. NZ
71 years. 12 attempts. Team India, led by King Kohli, have finally won a test series in Australia. What a feeling for Indian fans – soak it in people, Australia v India history has been made. What a start to the new year!
Edges & Sledges, our podcast that focuses on Indian cricket has been covering India’s tour of Australia since it began with the T20s. Here’s presenting a recap of all the big stories since the test series got underway (starting with Adelaide and ending after Sydney). Re-live every twist and turn of this landmark test series!
The second Australia v India test match starts on Friday and we couldn’t be more excited! India lead 1-0 and the wicket at the new Perth ‘Optus’ stadium looks super spicy (check out the grass cover in this picture from @BCCI’s twitter account).
This is the first test match to be played at the new Perth Stadium instead of the old WACA ground, which was one of the quickest pitches in the world in its time. Anyone else remember this spell from Ishant Sharma to Ricky Ponting at the WACA in 2008?
Despite having only a three day break between the first and second test matches, both bowling attacks will be raring to go. Apart from Mitchell Starc’s slow start at Adelaide, the focus will once again be on the batting line-ups. Australia fought hard at Adelaide and seemed to surprise their supporters with how close they ran India. India will be looking to skipper Virat Kohli to score big.
Australia’s biggest worry will be Tim Paine’s bruised finger.
As you know, we’ve been covering Australia v India on the Edges & Sledges cricket podcast. Here’s a recap of all the episodes on India’s tour of Australia. Click the titles below to listen to our coverage and let us know what you think. Also, do drop by to say hello to us on Twitter – @1tip1hand.
India finally head home after finishing their tour of England.
It’s been a long tour and while 4-1 in the tests was a disappointing scoreline, India can leave with their heads held high.
There is still work to do but plenty of positives from the series – the seam bowlers were brilliant, slip catching was decent, Chepu’s hundred at Southampton and Pant and Rahul scoring hundreds at Oval. We could go on but what we really loved was Virat Kohli proving to everyone he is the greatest batsman on the planet at the moment. He may not have got his hundred at Lords but it was on this blog that we first said in 2016 that he would go on to conquer England.
Even more importantly, we were really glad to see that India were competitive in all the test matches (save where the conditions were massively against them in at Lords). This is a huge improvement from 2014 where we were completely rolled over after the famous Lords win.
Edges & Sledges
So this week we have something a little different on our Edges & Sledges podcast. We were invited by James Buttler of the fantastic Cricket Badger Radio Show Podcast to do a joint show all about England and India and we jumped at the opportunity! We think you’ll find it pretty interesting to see how English fans viewed the series despite winning the test series 4-1.
